Hitchcock on Hitchcock, Volume 2: Selected Writings and Interviews, by Alfred Hitchcock

This second volume of Alfred Hitchcock’s reflections on his life and work and the art of cinema contains material long out of print, not easily accessible, and in some cases forgotten or unknown. Edited by Sidney Gottlieb, this new collection of interviews, articles with the great director's byline, and “as-told-to” pieces provides an enlivening perspective on a career that spanned seven decades and transformed the history of cinema.

In writings and interviews imbued with the same exuberance and originality that he brought to his films, Hitchcock ranges from accounts of his own life and experiences to provocative comments on filmmaking techniques and cinema in general. Wry, thoughtful, witty, and humorous—as well as brilliantly informative and insightful—this volume contains much valuable material that adds to our understanding and appreciation of a titan who decades after his death remains one of the most renowned and influential of all filmmakers.

François Truffaut once said that Hitchcock “had given more thought to the potential of his art than any of his colleagues.” This profound contemplation of his art is superbly captured in the pieces from all periods of Hitchcock’s career gathered in this volume, which reveal fascinating details about how he envisioned and attempted to create a “pure cinema” that was entertaining, commercially successful, and artistically ambitious and innovative in an environment that did not always support this lofty goal.

From the Inside Flap
"Who knew there was so much more intriguing material waiting to be gathered for Volume Two of Hitchcock on Hitchcock? Gottlieb has done a splendid job of searching down and intelligently introducing rare, often surprising items, including Hitchcock's early fiction, missing elements from his published conversations with Truffaut, and several of his little-known, nuanced essays on the craft of film making. Volume Two is a pleasure to read and a gift to anyone interested in the great director's career."—James Naremore, author of An Invention without a Future: Essays on Cinema

"For nearly twenty years, film buffs have been unable to imagine a world without Hitchcock on Hitchcock. Now Sidney Gottlieb has unearthed another volume’s worth of interviews, essays, and occasional pieces by the Master of Suspense, framing, contextualizing, and serving them up with unobtrusive deftness. I suspect that in less than twenty-four hours, readers exploring this gold mine of wisdom, opinion, memoir, anecdotes, and epigrams will be unable to imagine a world without Hitchcock on Hitchcock 2."—Thomas Leitch, coeditor of A Companion to Alfred Hitchcock

Praise for Volume 1:
"The essays, interviews and speeches in this collection make clear that [Hitchcock] enjoyed playing the role of God: in planning and executing his films, he relished the power he exerted as an all-powerful auteur. . . . Hitchcock on Hitchcock provides some telling self-portraits of the director. Almost every piece . . . contains an interesting nugget of technical information, or one or two anecdotal truffles."—Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

"Simply having this much out-of-the-way material at one's fingertips makes this a must for Hitchcock scholars.... This us an editing job worthy of the director himself." —Ina Ray Hark, Hitchcock Annual

"This is a book for anyone interested in Hitchcock the man and the—yes—artist; but also for those concerned with the history of British and American cinema, and with how these films, or some of their famous scenes, were made; and, at least intermittently, for those who fancy a good anecdone, a bit of tart humour, some iconoclastic views, and many fine insights into art and life—along with others of a more dubious nature." —John Simon, Times Literary Supplement

About the Author
Sidney Gottlieb is Professor of Communication and Media Studies at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. He coedits (with Richard Allen) the Hitchcock Annual, and his books include Hitchcock on Hitchcock: Selected Writings and Interviews, Volume 1; Alfred Hitchcock: Interviews; and Roberto Rossellini’s “Rome Open City.”

INDISPENSABLE
By EPluribusUnum100
Even if you are only slightly interested in Alfred Hitchcock you will find this book enjoyable reading just for the sheer variety of material culled from a 50+ year career. For students of Hitchcock's films this volume is quite indispensable, particularly the HITCHCOCK AT WORK section which includes a 22-page transcription of the director talking with his production manager about shooting STAGE FRIGHT and going over all the logistics of the film even before the screenplay was written. Unfortunately no excerpts from this are presented in Amazon's rather generous selection of preview pages, but have a look at Hitchcock's earliest writings in the preview to see the value of this volume, especially the short "Titles--Artistic and Otherwise" (p 71) or "How a Talking Film is Made" (p.73). The paperback edition I have is printed on sturdy, recycled paper and the binding looks like it will stand up to years of use--which is likely as this is really an indispensable reference book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Free for All: Fixing School Food in America (California Studies in Food and Culture), by Janet Poppendieck

How did our children end up eating nachos, pizza, and Tater Tots for lunch? Taking us on an eye-opening journey into the nation's school kitchens, this superbly researched book is the first to provide a comprehensive assessment of school food in the United States. Janet Poppendieck explores the deep politics of food provision from multiple perspectives--history, policy, nutrition, environmental sustainability, taste, and more. How did we get into the absurd situation in which nutritionally regulated meals compete with fast food items and snack foods loaded with sugar, salt, and fat? What is the nutritional profile of the federal meals? How well are they reaching students who need them? Opening a window onto our culture as a whole, Poppendieck reveals the forces--the financial troubles of schools, the commercialization of childhood, the reliance on market models--that are determining how lunch is served. She concludes with a sweeping vision for change: fresh, healthy food for all children as a regular part of their school day.

From the Inside Flap
"In her extraordinarily well-thought-out, beautifully written, sympathetic, and compelling book, Jan Poppendieck makes clear that Free for All has two meanings: how pressures to reduce the cost of school meals put our children's health at risk, and how best to solve this problem—universal school meals. Anyone who reads this book will find the present school lunch situation beyond unacceptable. Free for All is a call for action on behalf of America's school kids, one that we all need to join. I will be using this book in all my classes."—Marion Nestle, author of Food Politics

"President Obama has promised to end childhood hunger in America by the year 2015. He and his team should read Jan Poppendieck's new book Free for All. Her simple premise is that hunger is the enemy of education. She makes a persuasive case for the federal government to provide nutritious free school lunch and breakfast to every school child in America as a major step to end childhood hunger, reduce obesity and a whole range of nutrition related diseases and to improve the education of our children at the same time. Now, for the first time in my 35 years of fighting hunger we have a president who has pledged to actually do it starting with children and a book that provides the roadmap for an important part of the journey. Anyone who cares about our children should read this book."—Bill Ayres, Co-Founder and Executive Director of WHY (World Hunger Year)

“Free For All is an essential resource for anyone interested in school food reform. Janet Poppendieck has taken on a topic of extraordinary complexity and produced a comprehensive and engaging analysis of how the current system came to be, why it is so resistant to change, and what we can do to improve it. Throughout she rejects the scapegoating, moralism, and quick fixes that characterize so much of the current debate over school food. Instead, she offers insightful structural analysis, engaging interviews with front-line food service personnel, and colorful accounts of visits to lunch rooms across the nation. Free For All looks beyond local success stories, calling for a national program redesign that challenges us all to rethink the role of school food policy within the larger food system. What Upton Sinclair's The Jungle was to food safety regulation at the beginning of the last century, Poppendieck's Free for All may well be for school food reform at the start of the new century.”—Timothy D. Lytton, Angela and Albert Farone Distinguished Professor of Law, Albany Law School

“Janet Poppendieck's Free for All is a timely and extremely thoughtful call for a sane, just, and healthy school food agenda for America's children. Complex yet clear, vivid and engrossing, Free for All should be required reading for relevant courses in sociology, education, social work, and public health. It is truly food for thought for students, community activists, and policy makers.”—Ruth Sidel, PhD, Author of Unsung Heroines: Single Mothers and the American Dream

About the Author
Janet Poppendieck is Professor of Sociology at Hunter College, City University of New York. She is the author of Sweet Charity? Emergency Food and the End of Entitlement and Breadlines Knee Deep in Wheat: Food Assistance in the Great Depression.

Great Info on What and How to Change School Food in America
By Nancy Romer
Free For All: Fixing School Food in America, is a fabulous guide to the intricacies of School Food change. It's a must-read for those interested in how the system came to be so convoluted but unlike many similar books this one is loaded with examples of how ordinary people have organized to improve school food. Poppendieck believes that the time to transform School Food is now--it's the moment in which education and health are joined in the public eye. She also shows how environmental activists determined to slow global warming can accomplish all of the above by signing on to the now-vibrant School Food reform movement. Well-written, easy to read, very thoughtful book.

Comprehensive Overview
By Liana C Hebb
I was disappointed to discover that while the author portrays a comprehensive and very interesting account of our country's school food system, Poppendieck's slant on nutrition in school foods (for example, reducing fat and increasing carbs as beneficial) is outdated. I wish she had more current research on this aspect.

Indispensable for anyone who cares about improving school food!
By bhou
I'm a blogger about school food (among other topics) (thelunchtraydotcom) and I'm constantly relying on, citing and recommending this book to my readers.

In clear, readable and extremely well-researched prose, Poppendieck lays out for the reader everything you'd ever want or need to know about the school lunch program, from its historical roots (which explain the sometimes perplexing regulatory thicket governing the program now) to what it's like behind the scenes in actual school kitchens. What I like best about Poppendieck is that she approaches the subject with no agenda, hidden or otherwise - even as she promotes reform, she clearly has empathy for school districts which are trying, under intense financial pressure, to provide meals that are compliant with federal regulations.

If you care about the issue of school food in America, this is a MUST READ.

Why Jazz Happened, by Marc Myers

Why Jazz Happened is the first comprehensive social history of jazz. It provides an intimate and compelling look at the many forces that shaped this most American of art forms and the many influences that gave rise to jazz’s post-war styles. Rich with the voices of musicians, producers, promoters, and others on the scene during the decades following World War II, this book views jazz’s evolution through the prism of technological advances, social transformations, changes in the law, economic trends, and much more.

In an absorbing narrative enlivened by the commentary of key personalities, Marc Myers describes the myriad of events and trends that affected the music's evolution, among them, the American Federation of Musicians strike in the early 1940s, changes in radio and concert-promotion, the introduction of the long-playing record, the suburbanization of Los Angeles, the Civil Rights movement, the “British invasion” and the rise of electronic instruments. This groundbreaking book deepens our appreciation of this music by identifying many of the developments outside of jazz itself that contributed most to its texture, complexity, and growth.

A Cultural History of Jazz (or How Jazz Didn't Occur in a Vacuum)
By Kevin Currie-Knight
Why Jazz Happened is not your typical history of jazz. You won't get long biographies of Coltrane, Davis, and Monk. You won't get in-depth analyses of great songs, albums, or soloists. What you will get is the story of how cultural, social, and historical variables all helped to create jazz. Coltrane's extended solos, after all, are as much a product of the civil rights struggle and invention of the long play (LP) record as they were about Coltrane's upbringing and his legendary quartet. Bebop owes as much to the musician's union's strike (barring members from recording for two years in order to petition for royalties for recorded music) as it does to the pioneering vision of artists like Dizzy Gillespie.

So, Why Jazz Happened is a history of jazz, yes; but it is as much a history about American culture told through the story of jazz. West Coast jazz (a favorite of mine), for instance, is largely 'explained' (though Marc Myers is no reductionist) by the housing boom in post-WWII West Coast and the fact that many touring musicians decided to settle there, developing a laid back sound to match the laid back weather and atmosphere. Spiritual jazz (from Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" to Rollins's "Freedom Suite") is argued to be largely an outgrowth of black musicians' disappointment with legal and cultural segregation, and the lack of progress toward equality; many black artists increasingly wrote spiritual-influenced jazz expressing their anger at the present and hope toward the future. Soul jazz (from Lou Donaldson to Grant Green) is seen as jazz musicians' and record labels' attempts to get R&B record buyers to come back and buy jazz records. I hope I am not making Myers's explanations sound too simplistic; his story makes use of an impressive array of primary and secondary sources including interviews with the musicians (and 'behind the secenes' folks like record executives) working at the times in question.

If I have one complaint, it is that the book goes off in many different directions, sometimes, feeling a bit long winded. The chapter on West Coast jazz, for instance, gokes on for 20 or so pages on the ins and outs of Los Angeles's post-WWII booming housing market and the urban planning involved in dealing with the sprawl. Sections like these (another is an in-depth story of the creation of the LP record) are interesting for 10 or so pages, but the reader can get a bit bogged down in these details. (I suspect that during these times, most readers will be saying "let's get to the jazz part." I know I was.)

But all in all, I kept reading. The book was very interesting, particularly because it was both about jazz and the cultural surroundings that advertently and inadvertently shaped it. I know I will never listen to some of my favorites the same way again. Now, these favorites will come a bit more to life. And I think that is a good thing.

Why The Music Industry Happened!
By BookHimDan
Marc Myers is the kind of Jazz writer who never rests for a minute. He writes a daily blog called jazzwax (dot com) which is full of engaging interviews, opinions and recommendations about the music he so clearly knows and loves.

I believe the true audience for this book is much wider than just those interested in the history of Jazz. The book actually covers social and economic topics such as the advent of the LP and 45rpm records and the business rivalries that led to the emergence of pop, rock and even classical music as an at-home-entertainment industry. This book is probably just as important as an MBA case study as it is to the history of Jazz. Myers' coverage of the GI Bill and how it led to a generation of "schooled" musicians is another interesting social and political phenomenon that is of general interest, and helps explain why there is such a proliferation of music majors even today.

I don't mean in any way to diminish the importance of this book as a history of Jazz. My point is that it is much wider in scope. Myers set out to explain why Jazz happened, and he ended up explaining why the music industry as a whole happened, and the central role America has played in its evolution. A must-read for all music lovers.

Riveting account of how American history shaped Jazz and vice versa
By Tony Hymes
Marc Myers' background in history is immediately apparent as "Why Jazz Happened" chronicles the last century in intimate detail. From the cultural, political, social, and personal influences that impressed themselves on the ever-changing genres of swing, big band, bebop and "jass," this book will heighten readers' appreciation for one of the most American types of music. Highly recommended to anyone with even the slightest interest in Jazz, after the introduction and first chapter you will be hooked, and you just might become a Jazz fan for life. Good tip: cue up different tracks to listen to (from YouTube, Whyd, etc) that Myers mentions while you read along. You can actually see the progression of the artists and the music itself.

Coming of Age in America: The Transition to Adulthood in the Twenty-First CenturyFrom University of California Press

What is it like to become an adult in twenty-first-century America? This book takes us to four very different places—New York City, San Diego, rural Iowa, and Saint Paul, Minnesota—to explore the dramatic shifts in coming-of-age experiences across the country. Drawing from in-depth interviews with people in their twenties and early thirties, it probes experiences and decisions surrounding education, work, marriage, parenthood, and housing. The first study to systematically explore this phenomenon from a qualitative perspective, Coming of Age in America offers a clear view of how traditional patterns and expectations are changing, of the range of forces that are shaping these changes, and of how young people themselves view their lives.

Tasting French Terroir: The History of an Idea (California Studies in Food and Culture), by Thomas Parker

This book explores the origins and significance of the French concept of terroir, demonstrating that the way the French eat their food and drink their wine today derives from a cultural mythology that developed between the Renaissance and the Revolution. Through close readings and an examination of little-known texts from diverse disciplines, Thomas Parker traces terroir’s evolution, providing insight into how gastronomic mores were linked to aesthetics in language, horticulture, and painting and how the French used the power of place to define the natural world, explain comportment, and frame France as a nation.

Review
"An academic, meticulously researched, attentive journey through to the very complex roots of the concept of terroir . . . If you're looking for a book that will both fascinate you and challenge all your preconceptions about terroir, France and the French, this is it."--Tamlyn Currin"JancisRobinson.com" (12/23/2015)

From the Inside Flap
"With impressive erudition and an original marshaling of texts, Tasting French Terroir traces French national identity in the ever-intriguing, ever-evolving bond between cuisine and country."—Priscilla Parkhurst Ferguson, Professor of Sociology, Columbia University, and author of Word of Mouth: What We Talk About When We Talk About Food

“Tasting French Terroir makes an important contribution to myriad fields, including culinary history, French literature and philosophy, and political science. Demonstrating ingenuity with its sources and chronological scope, this book will be a wonderful resource for a wide range of scholars.”—Jennifer J. Davis, author of Defining Culinary Authority: The Transformation of Cooking in France, 1650–1830

"Thomas Parker elucidates and elaborates our understanding of terroir with his unique history of this polysemous word.  In Tasting French Terroir, Parker does not rely solely on classic French texts engaging with food and wine (say Brillat-Savarin and Curnonsky) to make sense of terroir’s meaning and import. His examinations of authors as varied as Rabelais, Montaigne, DeSerres and Rousseau provide new revelations about the long celebration of France’s natural bounty—what the French consider to be a great and generous geography. Parker leaves no stone unturned in his fascinating quest and makes a significant contribution to our understanding of French identity, the shifting tastes of the French, and the many meanings of terroir."—Amy Trubek, author of The Taste of Place: A Cultural History into Terroir and Faculty Director of the Food Systems Graduate Program at UVM

"Tasting French Terroir is about the untranslatable.  It takes us on a sweeping journey inside a word, a concept, an experience that often appears inaccessible or veiled to those outside of French language and culture.  Using a remarkable array of sources, Parker guides us inside French history and culture to demonstrate how food and wine came to be seen as the material manifestation of terroir.  This is a book that will be savored by food lovers everywhere."—Kolleen M. Guy, author of When Champagne Became French and Associate Professor of History at the University of Texas at San Antonio

Herbert Eugene Bolton: Historian of the American Borderlands, by Albert L. Hurtado

This definitive biography offers a new critical assessment of the life, works, and ideas of Herbert E. Bolton (1870–1953), a leading historian of the American West, Mexico, and Latin America. Bolton, a famous pupil of Frederick Jackson Turner, formulated a concept—the borderlands—that is a foundation of historical studies today. His research took him not only to the archives and libraries of Mexico but out on the trails blazed by Spanish soldiers and missionaries during the colonial era. Bolton helped establish the reputation of the University of California and the Bancroft Library in the eyes of the world and was influential among historians during his lifetime, but interest in his ideas waned after his death. Now, more than a century after Bolton began to investigate the Mexican archives, Albert L. Hurtado explores his life against the backdrop of the cultural and political controversies of his day.

From the Inside Flap
“A vivid, compelling, and timely biography of an historian who struggled, sometimes against his own prejudices, to make both the United States and American history less provincial. Al Hurtado has managed to capture more than half a century of American intellectual life, social life, and institution building through the story of single man.”—Richard White, author of Railroaded: The Transcontinentals and the Making of Modern America

“This definitive biography does double duty as a candid chronicle of academic history on the Pacific Slope, with all the rivalries, shifting allegiances, and promotional disputes that swirled around the persistent productivity of Herbert Eugene Bolton, academic archon of the Spanish Borderlands.”—Kevin Starr, University of Southern California

“Al Hurtado fills a void with this comprehensive biography of Herbert Eugene Bolton, the historian who invented the concept of ‘the Spanish Borderlands’ of North America and imagined a hemispheric history of a ‘Greater America’ that transcended national boundaries. Here he is, warts and all, amidst all the messy and fascinating details of his professional life. Deeply researched and written with verve and irony, this is a marvelous read.”—John Mack Faragher, author (with Robert V. Hine) of The American West: A New Interpretive History.

About the Author
Albert L. Hurtado is Travis Chair in Modern American History at the University of Oklahoma. He is the editor of Major Problems in American Indian History, second edition, and author of Indian Survival on the California Frontier, Intimate Frontiers: Sex, Gender, and Culture in Old California, and John Sutter: A Life on the North American Frontier, winner of the Caughey Prize from the west Western Historical Association.

Giving Turner the Last Word
By William Kostlevy
In a 1974 tribute to historian Charles A. Beard Henry Steele Commager noted that "like Turner and Parrington, like Veblen and Jane Addams [Beard] was a beneficiary of and a contributor to the intellectual ferment which seethed in Chicago, Madison and other middle border cities." Among historians alone the names of other Midwesterners come to mind Carl Becker, Frederick Merk, John D. Hicks, Grace Lee Nute and Louise Phelps Kellogg. Another significant historian to emerge from the Upper Midwest is Monroe County Wisconsin native and long time director of the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley Herbert Bolton. In his fine biography of Bolton Albert L. Hurtado tells the story of his humble origins, hard work, training at Wisconsin under "the master" Frederick Jackson Turner and his doctoral work at Penn under John Bach McMaster. Hurtado skillfully documents Bolton's rapid rise to prominence in the historical profession, his pioneering work in gathering source materials for the study of the history of the Spanish presence in North America and his growing commitment to hemispheric or "greater American" history. As Bolton wrote in 1931 "[it was] absurd to assume that the Western Hemisphere was developed in isolated chunks...yet we in the United States have proceeded on this assumption." (184) In the end Hurtado suggests that Bolton's scholarship despite being a product of a less enlightened time does point toward our enlightened present where the borderlands are "the meeting place of diverse cultures" and "an important foundation for today's multicultural borderlands studies." (2).

As I've hinted my one concern with Hurtado's otherwise impressive work is his misplaced "ritual slaying" of the elders. As early as 1934 Avery Craven in his introduction to Turner's still valuable The United States 1830-1850: The Nation and Its Sections noted that "the Master's "chief weakness lay in uneven knowledge of the varied units which make up and contribute to America life." In fact Turner's truncated chapter on "Texas and the Far West" suggests incomplete research not some moral failure. Linked to Hurtado's presentism is his condescension toward the rural Midwest. At one point Hurtado writes "To Herbert from the provinces, Penn most have seemed the center of a social and scholarly world he had only dreamed of in Wisconsin." Or Bolton's comment that Mexico City reminded him favorably of Milwaukee is interpreted as "the thinking of the provincial Yankee greenhorn." As Commager noted in Greencastle, IN, the intellectual and cultural center of North American at the turn of the twentieth century was not in Philadelphia or Berkeley but far closer to Milwaukee. Ironically or fittingly, Hurtado gives a Midwesterner, Turner, the last (if unattributed) word, "Every generation writes history anew." The fuller Turner quotation helps us understand the limitations of Hurtado's perspective. "Each age writes the history of the past anew with reference to the conditions uppermost in its own time." I am a contemporary of Hurtado who shares his desire for a truly diverse and multicultural history. Still I wish he would spend less time judging Bolton for not having liberal twenty-first century sensibilities and more time attempting to understand him and his world. But yes (if you look beyond Hurtado's own provincialism) there is much in this book for those interested in historiography and the development of history as an academic discipline in the United States.

terrific read
By litgal
This is a terrific read, a new bio on Herbert Eugene Bolton, historian of the West, Latin America and the Spanish Borderlands. Follows his career from Texas to UC Berkeley where he taught a popular History of the Americas course, built up the history dept and Bancroft Library, which would become a treasuretrove of Western and Latin Americana, and researched and wrote numerous tomes on the early Spanish explorers of North America.

Great history of the Southwest with eye on Spain
By JA Coleman
Bolton's book deserves to be read as it really balances the Anglocentric view of American history that most of us are taught. There is more to American history than just Plymouth Rock and Bolton shows us this other world.

Works by a great poet
By Israel Drazin
The famous late Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai (1924-2000) is considered by many people in Israel and internationally as Israel’s greatest modern poet. His poetry is relevant for all people and cultures, poignant, thought-provoking, and easy to read because it generally contains no esoteric illusions to ancient classical events that seem to be a requirement in most poetry today. Even people who generally dislike poetry will like his poems. This book contains many of them. The following is an example:

A man doesn’t have time in his life to have time for everything.
He doesn’t have seasons enough to have a season for ever purpose.
Ecclesiastes was wrong about that.
A man needs to love and hate at the same moment,
To laugh and cry with the same eyes.
With the same hands to throw stones
And gather them in,
To make love in war and war in love,
And to hate and forgive, and remember and forget,
To arrange and confuse, to eat and digest,
What history takes years and years to do.
A man doesn’t have time.
As he loses he seeks,
As he finds he forgets,
As he forgets he loves,
And as he loves he begins to forget.

Stunningly Great Poems
By Linda Johnsen
Though I long since heard of the legendary Jewish poet Yehuda Amichai, only just now did I sat down to read him. Dear Lord, what I've been missing! This is absolutely one of the most brilliant books of poetry I've read in years.
