About the Author
Robert Dudley is Professor of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and Research Associate at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama. His research on the evolutionary origins of alcohol consumption has appeared in numerous journals.

Honest Explanation for Alcohol Attraction

1 in 25 humans globally have alcohol-related causes of death, there are more than 12M alcoholics in the US, yet all the explanations and treatments for alcohol I've seen have been "soft". This book explains the "hard" reasons why we are evolutionarily attracted to alcohol. This book is very well written, short enough to read and digest quickly, and does a great job laying a real foundation for why humans are drawn to alcohol, ignoring social taboos and incorporating real observational research across a number of species leading to humans.
Frankly, after reading this I wonder why alcoholism isn't treated from an evolutionary perspective. I believe that this book could set the starting point for more effective treatment.
This should be mandatory reading for anyone who is an alcoholic, is close to an alcoholic, or is in the fields of research, treatment, or policy-setting for alcoholics. It pins down a credible starting point for all of the above.

Good however not going to change much about why people drink.

The link between olfactory sensations and cravings is a well known phenomenon. One of the strongest links studied so far. The chief difficulty, that I see, is that in the evolution from mainly arboreal to primarily biped the monkey/ape makes some profound changes. The most important has to do with decision making and the amount of criteria that is both realized and acted upon. I think this is good information to be aware of and most certainly belongs in a collection of serious works on the subject of alcoholism.

An engaging and fantastic read!

The Drunken Monkey provides a compelling explanation of possible evolutionary links to people's love of the drink. The book is exceptionally well written and extremely informative. It cuts across disciplines by connecting concepts such as evolution, health/nutrition, and sociology. I highly recommend the book to those discerning readers who want well written, entertaining and informative reads.
