Romantic Anatomies of Performance, by James Q. Davies

Romantic Anatomies of Performance is concerned with the very matter of musical expression: the hands and voices of virtuosic musicians. Rubini, Chopin, Nourrit, Liszt, Donzelli, Thalberg, Velluti, Sontag, and Malibran were prominent celebrity pianists and singers who plied their trade between London and Paris, the most dynamic musical centers of nineteenth-century Europe. In their day, performers such as these provoked an avalanche of commentary and analysis, inspiring debates over the nature of mind and body, emotion and materiality, spirituality and mechanism, artistry and skill. J. Q. Davies revisits these debates, examining how key musicians and their contemporaries made sense of extraordinary musical and physical abilities. This is a history told as much from scientific and medical writings as traditionally musicological ones. Davies describes competing notions of vocal and pianistic health, contrasts techniques of training, and explores the ways in which music acts in the cultivation of bodies..

Review
"Davies narrating incidents and tracing connections is full of animation and amusement . . . a master of the anecdote and incident."--Stephen Brown"Times Literary Supplement" (04/03/2015)

From the Inside Flap
“This book presents a brilliant cultural history of musical performance in the first half of the nineteenth century. Taking an original approach to the study of virtuosity, Davies uses a rich set of primary sources, both medical and musical, to conjure a new history of the music-making body, of sound and its physical production.”
Annette Richards, author of The Free Fantasia and the Musical Picturesque

“Through a focus on performers—or, more specifically, on their voices and hands—James Davies offers a material rethinking of musical romanticism that casts well-known figures such as Chopin, Liszt, and Malibran in a striking new light, along with others much less familiar yet just as central to the preoccupations of the time. In both its rich detail and its overarching themes, this book sets a new standard for writing the cultural history of nineteenth-century music.”
Benjamin Walton, author of Rossini in Restoration Paris: The Sound of Modern Life

Excellent Copyediting Tutorial on the Current Chicago Manual of Style
By Dr C J Singh

While teaching UC Berkeley's courses in "The Professional Sequence in Editing," I regularly assigned selected exercises in this book's earlier editions as preparation for more complex exercises in class. The students' evaluations of the book were always favorable.

This edition presents a fast-track introduction to the many changes in the Chicago Manual of Style, sixteenth edition, 2010. I particularly appreciate the handbook's references to the Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage. (See my review of this great usage dictionary on amazon.) Ever since its publication in 1989, I have regularly enjoyed reading MWDEU's scholarly entries. These 2300 entries, often witty, drawn mainly from literary sources are a refreshing contrast to Garner's stridently prescriptive injunctions in the Chicago Manual, drawn mainly from journalistic sources.

The inclusion of complete keys to the handbook's exercises make it an excellent workbook for self-teaching or reviewing the basics of professional copyediting.

By Martin
I had done some proofreading and editing, but not at a career, and so learned a whole lot from this book. The examples and exercises were very beneficial to me. I liked how this book made the distinction between what were fixed rules and what were only matters of opinion or preference. The one thing that I found a little funny was on page 406. In the section about bias-free language and explaining that we should not assume that all pioneers or rock musicians are men, the very next page then urges caution when using sports metaphors, because they may "make some women feel that they are not part of the intended audience." That to me is funny! In the section about bias-free language, the author seems to tell us that only men can understand sports metaphors. Rather than saying that those who do not follow sports may not understand sports metaphors, the author specifically says that the reason to be careful is that some women may not understand sports metaphors. Other than that, I thought that the book was very helpful and I am glad that I read it.

Stealing the Show: African American Performers and Audiences in 1930s Hollywood, by Miriam J. Petty

Stealing the Show is a study of African American actors in Hollywood during the 1930s, a decade that saw the consolidation of stardom as a potent cultural and industrial force. Petty focuses on five performers whose Hollywood film careers flourished during this period—Louise Beavers, Fredi Washington, Lincoln “Stepin Fetchit” Perry, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, and Hattie McDaniel—to reveal the “problematic stardom” and the enduring, interdependent patterns of performance and spectatorship for performers and audiences of color. She maps how these actors—though regularly cast in stereotyped and marginalized roles—employed various strategies of cinematic and extracinematic performance to negotiate their complex positions in Hollywood and to ultimately “steal the show.” Drawing on a variety of source materials, Petty explores these stars’ reception among Black audiences and theorizes African American viewership in the early twentieth century. Her book is an important and welcome contribution to the literature on the movies.

Review
"[Miriam Petty's] ambitious book places Stepin Fetchit (the persona of Lincoln Perry) in a new light, and all of her subjects in high relief... [a] fine book."--Carrie Rickey"Film Quarterly" (09/12/2016)"

From the Inside Flap
“This major work of film and cultural studies scholarship brilliantly unpacks what is at stake in the common expression ‘stealing the show’ in the context of African American tradition and performance. The detailed analyses of performance—of how Hattie McDaniel acts, how Bill Robinson dances, how Lincoln Perry’s Stepin Fetchit speaks and moves—manage to be at once evocative and rigorous. These are worked together with contextual moves that are at once surprising and yet, once made, made one wonder why they had not been pressed home before: McDaniel in relation to iconic earlier African American women activists, for instance; discourses and technologies of skin color in relation to the use of star images in Imitation of Life; children as spectators within and beyond the films of Bill Robinson. Beautifully written, Stealing the Show has found a way to analyze in detail and with precision the common perception of the remarkable achievements of African American performers in the face of the roles they were obliged to play, on and off screen. In the process, Miriam Petty has produced an important, engaging, and exemplary work of textually and historically sensitive cultural analysis.”—Richard Dyer, King's College London and St. Andrews University

“Hattie McDaniel, ‘Bojangles’ Robinson, Fredi Washington, Louise Beavers, and ‘Stepin Fetchit,’ who shine in so many movies from the ’30s and early ’40s—are they best understood as toms, coons, mammies, mulattoes, and bucks, as in Donald Bogle’s resonate formulation? Or as stars, as the black press and African American moviegoers of the time often felt? Miriam Petty’s energetic and detailed analysis of these performers, their films, and the varying discourses around them (press, critical, PR, and fan) lays out and explores the stakes and limits that inhered—and still inhere—in these questions and debates. Stealing the Show makes clear why and how these performers were so galvanizing, and how the filmmaking and sociocultural representational systems that could only see them as thieves still needs reform.”—Arthur Knight, author of Disintegrating the Musical: Black Performance and American Musical Film
“Stealing the Show mines the complex position of African American performers in the Hollywood of the thirties from their treatment by studios and marketing departments to the ways in which they sought to control the construction of their own reputations both on and off the screen and within and outside of the Black community. Through extensive archival research and inviting prose, Miriam Petty seeks to understand the dynamics between star and audience, and the ways in which Black performers walked a delicate line between their onscreen roles and their off-screen personas. It provides an innovative look at Black stardom through the multifocal rubric of industry, performance, press, and audience and promises to change the way we think about how stardom reflects and refracts racial ideologies. There’s no doubt that Stealing the Show will be required reading for scholars of film history, star studies, and African American film.”—Paula Massood, Professor of Film Studies, Brooklyn College, CUNY

Art History, After Sherrie Levine, by Howard Singerman

This book examines the career of New York-based artist Sherrie Levine, whose 1981 series of photographs “after Walker Evans”—taken not from life but from Evans’s famous depression-era documents of rural Alabama—became central examples in theorizing postmodernism in the visual arts in the 1980s. For the first in-depth examination of Levine, Howard Singerman surveys a wide variety of sources, both historical and theoretical, to assess an artist whose work was understood from the outset to challenge both the label “artist” and the idea of oeuvre—and who has over the past three decades crafted a significant oeuvre of her own. Singerman addresses Levine’s work after Evans, Brancusi, Malevich, and others as an experimental art historical practice—material reenactments of the way the work of art history is always doubled in and structured by language, and of the ways the art itself resists.

From the Inside Flap
“Howard Singerman’s new volume is truly groundbreaking for reasons that might at first seem counter-intuitive in their common sense: he smartly sets artistic production of the 1980s in context, looking at artworks in parallel with intellectual dialogues of the time in order to show how each was deeply enmeshed in the other—and then he radically expands his art-historical frame. Taking up the work of one remarkable artist, Sherrie Levine, in light of art-historical precedents set by, among many others, Constantin Brancusi and Marcel Duchamp, Singerman traces what would seem to be (but are not) incorrigible lines of medium-specificity and conceptual strategy through the decades. Singerman proves that postmodernism does not necessarily enact the break we’ve been told it does (so much as make possible other, transformed, iterations of longstanding discourses in art) while simultaneously offering readers a new entry into debates of the last thirty years. When it comes to revising our understanding of twentieth-century and contemporary art, Singerman’s groundbreaking project is, indeed, art history, but only as it can be written after Sherrie Levine.”

—Johanna Burton, editor of Cindy Sherman

“Howard Singerman presents a solid overview not only of the career of the contemporary artist Sherrie Levine, but also of what came to be known as postmodernism in the late 1970s and 1980s. Singerman mobilizes a broad range of sources, moving back and forth comfortably between discursive and historical ground on the one hand, and theoretical speculation on the other. Art History, After Sherrie Levine answers many questions about American art of the late twentieth century. Rich in detail and challenging in ideas, it is a pleasure to read.”

—Alexander Alberro, author of Conceptual Art and the Politics of Publicity

Review
"A thorough, accessible text embracing a massive and diverse region of California. . . . [The book] distills wisdom from many people who love both the avifauna and the high country and will inspire many of us to follow in their tracks."--Claire Peaslee"West Marin County" (06/27/2013)

From the Inside Flap
"The Sierra Nevada has inspired a long history of outstanding science and art, and now it has a bird book that measures up on all counts. Avid birders will be more than satisfied with the 'when' and 'where' information about each species, while novices (and experts) will be drawn in by the 'how' and 'why' facts sprinkled throughout, as well as by Keith Hansen's lively and beautiful artwork. It is rare that a reference book invites you to simply sit down and read, and this is such a book."--David Allen Sibley, author and illustrator of The Sibley Guide to Birds

"If you are lucky enough to visit the mighty Sierra (or if you just dream of going there someday), this book will multiply your understanding and enjoyment of its birdlife. With deep insights into the natural history, seasonal occurrence, and changing status of all the birds in the range, enhanced by beautiful illustrations, this is a monumental work that will be consulted and admired for decades to come."--Kenn Kaufman, author of the Kaufman Field Guide to Advanced Birding

"The delights and nuances of birding in the Sierra Nevada fly off the pages of this deeply researched and richly illustrated book. The illustrations capture the gestalt and details of each species, and the detailed descriptions are fun to read and packed with information that will help the reader see and understand more about birds. No other book combines these elements so successfully. The product of over fifteen years of research and painting, this is a magnificent resource for all who love the mountains and the biodiversity within them."--John Muir Laws, author and illustrator of The Laws Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada

"Birds of The Sierra Nevada presents valuable scientific information in an easy, eloquent style, fitting to the majestic and inspirational region covered by this guide. Keith Hansen's illustrations reflect absolute attention to accuracy and to each species' essence, what the observer sees in the field. I strongly recommend this book, not just for those visiting the Sierra Nevada, but for birders and ornithologists throughout North America."--Peter Pyle, author of the Identification Guide to North American Birds

Great reference book
By Kathryn L. Parker
Very thorough coverage of the birds & where and when to look for them. Love that it covers the entire Sierra Nevada - most of the previous books tended to concentrate on the Yosemite area. Also has a good explanation of the various habitats, how to recognize them, and which birds can be found in which areas. Highly, highly recommend this book for anyone birding the Sierra Nevadas.

This book has it all!
By Rough 'n Rudy
Not only life histories, but name origins, topics ranging from the big picture about the species' distribution and conservation status in the Sierra right down to specifics, for example the few sites where Green Heron has been found to breed on the east side of the Sierra. And the art work is a work of art! Real birds doing real things. I use the information in the book to prepare for slide shows, lead field trips, answer those questions I have always wondered about or been asked by friends. A huge amount of research obviously went into this book and it shows - hours and hours of searching Christmas Bird Count, Breeding Bird Survey, eBird, and list-serve data bases. It makes me tired just thinking about it - and now I don't have to do it myself! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. This book has it all.

Beautiful Book
By Carol Malnor
This book is excellent for both novice and experienced birders--there's something for everyone! The diversity of bird habitats in the Sierra Nevada is made clear right at the beginning of the book with descriptions of ecological zones. I learned so much about the Foothill Zone where I live, as well as the other zones and special habitats. The authors have done an excellent job of making each species account interesting and enjoyable to read--I couldn't put it down. Complementing the writing are the beautiful illustrations--the birds come alive on every page. I highly recommend this book to all Sierra Nevada birders.

Arbitraging Japan: Dreams of Capitalism at the End of Finance, by Hirokazu Miyazaki

For many financial market professionals worldwide, the era of high finance is over. The times in which bankers and financiers were the primary movers and shakers of both economy and society have come to an abrupt halt. What has this shift meant for the future of capitalism? What has it meant for the future of the financial industry? What about the lives and careers of financial operators who were once driven by utopian visions of economic, social, and personal transformation? And what does it mean for critics of capitalism who have long predicted the end of financial institutions? Hirokazu Miyazaki answers these questions through a close examination of the careers and intellectual trajectories of a group of pioneering derivatives traders in Japan during the 1990s and 2000s.

Review
"I heartily recommend [this book] to readers who are seriously interested in finance, market economics, or capitalism... brimming with lucid analysis and profound insight." (Social Science Japan Journal 2016-05-02)

From the Inside Flap
“Based on fieldwork with derivatives traders, Miyazaki’s Arbitraging Japan is a brilliant reexamination of finance that goes beyond simple sloganeering or calls for more (or less) regulation. Miyazaki’s compelling and timely contribution to the anthropology, sociology, and philosophy of finance illuminates its actors’ philosophical commitments and emphasizes its human and social aspects.”—Bill Maurer, Professor of Anthropology at University of California, Irvine

"Miyazaki’s superbly crafted ethnography, Arbitraging Japan, follows the lives of a small group of Japanese arbitrageurs as they create instruments designed to exploit the relentless generation of pricing difference emanating from the heart of financial markets. What starts as a technical exegesis on the operation of finance, yields a vibrant account of the dreams and the predicaments of our time. The narrative is restrained, perhaps even understated, and yet what is achieved is exhilarating."—Doug Holmes, author of Integral Europe: Fast-Capitalism, Multiculturalism, Neofascism

About the Author
Hirokazu Miyazaki is Director of the East Asia Program and Professor of Anthropology at Cornell University.

Started promising, but I was disappointed
By Phil O.
I like a good financial ethnography. I found arbitrage a fascinating centerpiece around which one could be made. I was very happy with the book as it started -- taking us inside not only a trading firm in Japan going into the 1990s, but to wider views of Japanese views of finance and innovation vis a vis world capitalism as the same were co-evolving. This gave insight into why Japan seemed world-beating in a time it overlaid refinements expertly onto others' inventions (such as autos), but then floundered in some ways as the turbulent, creatively destructive postwar world impinged on Japanese society, shaking many foundations. Many certitudes dissolved, and this book conveys that well. And, the book looks into the minds of actual arbitrageurs via interviews over long periods with the author. It shows how many of their dreams lost their ways, in the tumult of indilviduals' business lives, and their firms' adjustments.
For me, a high point was in this quote, a fascinating mix of western style financial modeling with a sort of classically eastern poetic metaphor (at 55): " ... Koyama, a chemical engineer turned options trader, told me that he always tried to make profits in the way the market returns to equilibrium. He said, 'I do not care about whether the market goes up or down tomorrow, but I can tell when someone throws a stone into a pond. I can statistically deal with the way the waves disappear ....'"
Now for the bad parts: (1) many phrases and concepts are repeated beyond tedium. Yes, arbitraging away opportunities erases them. Yes, this might mean some people make their own innovations, and even jobs, obsolete. Does repeating this (not new idea) literally many dozens of times make it more meaningful or effective? It is just silly, past a certain point of repetitions. I sense that the author ran out of "gas" in some way, perhaps out of creative metaphors to come to grips with the story as it progressed, and to develop insights further than this level. Perhaps the veering at the end into some extremely abstract intellectuals' work was an attempt to do this. But that was not a smooth transition, and the author's motives or process (despite all the introspection on display here) are not transparent. (2) Following certain individuals across a career path was revealing, and also showed how vapid and tedious and mediocre much of people's lives and thoughts are. Many of these subjects were very lopsidedly arbitrage-capable early on, yet silly in many of their personal ambitions, and dreams, and deeply mediocre as philosophers. Many veered ilnto bizarre belief systems and superstitions. Their overall depth of education, knowledge and reality testing seems questionable. One is left to wonder their later careers being largely series of failures has anything to do with that; we are left to guess. My guess is, yes. But this leave us wondering whether they are representative of financial professionals of their time and place. Again, we are guessing. Loose ends liket his abound. Who cares what a tiny sample of idiosyncratic and ultimately unsuccessful guys think about things they obviously are sketchy in? It is useful as a bit of anthropology, but only a sliver, an anecdotal sketch; not reliable as a basis for big picture thoughts about their cohort. (3) The author feels free to wander among all levels of (attempted) analysis, reflection, philosophizing, observations of other scholars' works, self-aware commentary, and to interpose some kind of ennui about it all, with little discipline or design. In this sense, the looseness of enthnography (as opposed to, say, a financial math textbook) has its downside, because it seems to be anything the author is mildly interested in, in relation to the general topic. It wanders and sort of evaporates into its own ennui, leaving a few interesting fragments. Don't get me wrong: I do not demand a simplistic thesis or structure; I do not need everything stripped down to some plot line or narrative with a clear "gimme" phrase to explain things. I think I'm about as tolerant of ambiguity and loose association as most anyone.
Was it worth it? Yes, but the amount of filler and repetition and loose ends cancelled a lot of that value for me.

Restless Dead: Encounters between the Living and the Dead in Ancient Greece, by Sarah Iles Johnston

During the archaic and classical periods, Greek ideas about the dead evolved in response to changing social and cultural conditions—most notably changes associated with the development of the polis, such as funerary legislation, and changes due to increased contacts with cultures of the ancient Near East. In Restless Dead, Sarah Iles Johnston presents and interprets these changes, using them to build a complex picture of the way in which the society of the dead reflected that of the living, expressing and defusing its tensions, reiterating its values and eventually becoming a source of significant power for those who knew how to control it. She draws on both well-known sources, such as Athenian tragedies, and newer texts, such as the Derveni Papyrus and a recently published lex sacra from Selinous.

Topics of focus include the origin of the goes (the ritual practitioner who made interaction with the dead his specialty), the threat to the living presented by the ghosts of those who died dishonorably or prematurely, the development of Hecate into a mistress of ghosts and its connection to female rites of transition, and the complex nature of the Erinyes. Restless Dead culminates with a new reading of Aeschylus' Oresteia that emphasizes how Athenian myth and cult manipulated ideas about the dead to serve political and social ends.

"[This work] will represent the principal study of ancient Greek beliefs in the intervention of the dead, a topic of acute relevance to the study of classical literature, Greek religion, and the later cultures that spawned curse tablets and versions of Christianity."—David Frankfurter, author of Religion in Roman Egypt

"This is an incontestably useful book. . . . The author's scholarship is remarkable and her competence indisputable. Her laudably courageous and original analysis of the Erinyes leads us from archaic poetry, via the purificatory rituals and reforms of cult brought about by the mysterious Epimenides, to the Orphic tradition recently discovered in the Derveni papyrus—all of which enables Sarah Johnston to conclude by proposing an enthralling rereading of Aeschylus' Oresteia."—Philippe Borgeaud, author of The Cult of Pan in Ancient Greece

About the Author
Sarah Iles Johnston is Arts and Humanities Distinguished Professor of Religion and Professor of Classics at the Ohio State University. Her many books include Ancient Greek Divination and, with Fritz Graf, Ritual Texts for the Afterlife: Orpheus and the Bacchic Gold Tablets.

Deep Things out of Darkness: A History of Natural History, by John G. T. Anderson

Natural history, the deliberate observation of the environment, is arguably the oldest science. From purely practical beginnings as a way of finding food and shelter, natural history evolved into the holistic, systematic study of plants, animals, and the landscape. Deep Things out of Darkness chronicles the rise, decline, and ultimate revival of natural history within the realms of science and public discourse. Ecologist John G. T. Anderson focuses his account on the lives and contributions of an eclectic group of men and women, from John Ray, John Muir, Charles Darwin, and Rachel Carson, who endured remarkable hardships and privations in order to learn more about their surroundings. Written in an engaging narrative style and with an extensive bibliography of primary sources, the book charts the journey of the naturalist’s endeavor from prehistory to the present, underscoring the need for natural history in an era of dynamic environmental change.

Review
"An engaglng writing style. . . . Highly recommended."--D.A. Lovejoy"Choice" (08/01/2013)

From the Inside Flap
“A sweeping work of passion and erudition, Deep Things Out of Darkness deftly traces the rise, decline, and recent revival of natural history in the West. Through a series of carefully crafted biographical vignettes of famous naturalists—from Aristotle to Rachel Carson—Anderson highlights the accomplishments of the men and women who have struggled to comprehend the earth’s teeming biodiversity."--Mark V. Barrow, Jr., author of Nature’s Ghosts: Confronting Extinction from the Age of Jefferson to the Age of Ecology

"This book resonates with the persistent joy of discovery. We are invited into the lives of naturalists known and unknown, and we get to see the world as they saw it, showing us the path our craft has taken through the deep woods of time. Anderson explores the evolving ecology of natural history, underlining the impact of social pressures and the individual passions of those who shaped our view of the natural world. Deep Things is a must-read for those who call themselves naturalists—and many more of us should!"--Joshua Tewksbury, Walker Professor of Natural History, University of Washington

“A remarkable work of scholarship that reads like a spirited conversation with a very smart friend. Anderson has delved into the depths of original historical texts and re-emerged to write an engaging story of the human quest to understand our more-than-human neighbors. An invaluable resource for scholars, and—more important—a fun read for us all.”--Thomas L. Fleischner, Director, Natural History Institute, Prescott College

a wonderful read
By mulsh
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Part that enjoyment comes from the crisp and informative writing but much of it comes from the assorted subjects. The book is a thoughtful and chronological history and biography of Natural History and the scientists, writers and amateurs who have made the field what it is today. The author's enthusiasm for this subject is evident through out and highly contagious.

I spent a happy rainy Sunday curled up with this book. Though jam packed with well researched information, it is not a mere scholarly tome, but a highly entertaining and well written read. This book is a must for anyone who enjoys history and stories from history.

The Best Up To Date History of Natural History
By David B Richman
I picked up this wonderful book in a local book store a few months ago and just finished reading it. John G. T. Anderson has written the best defense of ecology and natural history in "Deep Things Out of Darkness" that I have ever run across. As a former curator of a small specialized museum (the Arthropod Museum) at a state university I have always thought that field biology (natural history, ecology, taxonomy and evolutionary biology) had been getting short shrift to laboratory studies. In reality we need both as for example DNA work can be very useful in reworking relationships and developing models of populations that still must be ground truthed in the field. Field work is very difficult as the variables multiply and interact, but it must be done if we are to gain even a semblance of what happens in the real world. Fortunately we seem to be (at least in part because of such biologists as E. O. Wilson) resuming our interest in these vital studies. Anderson has documented the search for answers to important biological questions in the world of oceans, forests, lakes, marshes, deserts, mountains and prairies, but he has done it in a way that easily engrosses the reader, even if they are not biologists. This is no dry treatment of a merely antiquated academic subject, but the fascinating tale of difficulty and hardship that led to many of the most important insights into our natural world. This book also demonstrates that we need more workers in these areas to help us deal with the current and coming environmental crises. I recommend it highly!

Embracing the crossroads that made the region distinctive this book reveals how American families have always been characterized by greater diversity than idealizations of the traditional family have allowed. The essays show how family life figured prominently in relations to larger struggles for conquest and control.

From the Inside Flap
“On the Borders of Love and Power explores the intimate intersections of race, gender, and empire among families in the American West. The editors have gathered provocative essays by the best-known historians of family and gender in the region. This volume captures the breadth and depth of contemporary research in the field and will influence scholars for years to come.”—Albert L. Hurtado, author of Herbert Eugene Bolton: Historian of the American Borderlands

"This important book, full of fine scholarship, explores the history of the American West through intimate and richly rendered portraits of kinship and family relations. Emphasizing the centrality of cross-cultural encounters and the “micro-politics” of family formation within the broader context of colonial “macro-politics” and nation building, these compelling and accessible essays provide a deeply textured understanding of the history of the region. This volume will certainly inspire historians of the Western United States, as well as those of colonialism, empire, and national expansion in other regions, to focus more closely on these intimate realms in their own research."—James F. Brooks, president, School for Advanced Research, Santa Fe, and author of Captives & Cousins: Slavery, Kinship, and Community in the Southwest Borderlands

An eye-opener on how family shapes history
By Tamarack Song
If you think you know how the West was won (or lost, as your perspective prescribes), I encourage you to sit down with this book, which is essentially an exposé of relationship dynamics in the colonial Southwest. Although the cultures, allegiances, and motivations of colonizers varied regionally across the West, the transformational effect on both aboriginal and colonial kinship systems was largely the same. The relationship models brought forth in this volume's essays, then, aptly serve as metaphors for the West as a whole.

The history of cultural transformation lies not in the grand movements of armies and borders, nor in the political and religious tides that wash over an area, but rather in the textures of marriages, adoptions, and labor relations. Whether motivated by greed or necessity, affection or disdain, people find ways around established systems and mores, and in doing so script a history that oftentimes renders alien the conventional historical accounts. On the Borders of Love and Power is one such people's history.

From the myth of Kit Carson to the Southwest's own brand of slavery, from the many shades of assimilation to motley human amalgamations struggling to find identity as families, I find this book to be as thrilling as fiction, and more sentient and revealing than any cultural history I have read.
