Government of Paper: The Materiality of Bureaucracy in Urban Pakistan, by Matthew S. Hull

In the electronic age, documents appear to have escaped their paper confinement. But we are still surrounded by flows of paper with enormous consequences. In the planned city of Islamabad, order and disorder are produced through the ceaseless inscription and circulation of millions of paper artifacts among bureaucrats, politicians, property owners, villagers, imams (prayer leaders), businessmen, and builders. What are the implications of such a thorough paper mediation of relationships among people, things, places, and purposes? Government of Paper explores this question in the routine yet unpredictable realm of the Pakistani urban bureaucracy, showing how the material forms of postcolonial bureaucratic documentation produce a distinctive political economy of paper that shapes how the city is constructed, regulated, and inhabited. Files, maps, petitions, and visiting cards constitute the enduring material infrastructure of more ephemeral classifications, laws, and institutional organizations. Matthew S. Hull develops a fresh approach to state governance as a material practice, explaining why writing practices designed during the colonial era to isolate the government from society have become a means of participation in it.

From the Inside Flap
“Drawing inspiration from actor-network theory, science studies, and semiotics, this brilliant book makes us completely rethink the workings of bureaucracy as analyzed by Max Weber and James Scott. Matthew Hull demonstrates convincingly how the materiality of signs truly matters for understanding the projects of ‘the state.’” - Katherine Verdery, author of What was Socialism, and What Comes Next?

“We are used to studies of roads and rails as central material infrastructure for the making of modern states. But what of records, the reams and reams of paper that inscribe the state-in-making? This brilliant book inquires into the materiality of information in colonial and postcolonial Pakistan. This is a work of signal importance for our understanding of the everyday graphic artifacts of authority.” - Bill Maurer, author of Mutual Life, Limited: Islamic Banking, Alternative Currencies, Lateral Reason

"This is an excellent and truly exceptional ethnography. Hull presents a theoretically sophisticated and empirically rich reading that will be an invaluable resource to scholars in the field of Anthropology and South Asian studies. The author’s focus on bureaucracy, “corruption," writing systems and urban studies (Islamabad) in a post-colonial context makes for a unique ethnographic engagement with contemporary Pakistan. In addition, Hull’s study is a refreshing voice that breaks the mold of current representation of Pakistan through the security studies paradigm." - Kamran Asdar Ali, Director, South Asia Institute, University of Texas

Moral Nation: Modern Japan and Narcotics in Global History (Asia: Local Studies / Global Themes), by Miriam Kingsberg

This trailblazing study examines the history of narcotics in Japan to explain the development of global criteria for political legitimacy in nations and empires in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Japan underwent three distinct crises of sovereignty in its modern history: in the 1890s, during the interwar period, and in the 1950s. Each crisis provoked successively escalating crusades against opium and other drugs, in which moral entrepreneurs--bureaucrats, cultural producers, merchants, law enforcement, scientists, and doctors, among others--focused on drug use as a means of distinguishing between populations fit and unfit for self-rule. Moral Nation traces the instrumental role of ideologies about narcotics in the country's efforts to reestablish its legitimacy as a nation and empire.

As Kingsberg demonstrates, Japan's growing status as an Asian power and a "moral nation" expanded the notion of "civilization" from an exclusively Western value to a universal one. Scholars and students of Japanese history, Asian studies, world history, and global studies will gain an in-depth understanding of how Japan's experience with narcotics influenced global standards for sovereignty and shifted the aim of nation building, making it no longer a strictly political activity but also a moral obligation to society.

"Thorough, well researched, and novel . ["Moral Nation"]brings a new perspective to the issue of opium trafficking in East Asia, to Japan s colonial role in this region, and to the broader issue of Japan s encounter with modernity."--Richard Reitan"Journal of Japanese Studies" (08/01/2015)"

"Moral Nation, meticulously researched and sensibly written, is a welcome addition to the library of Japanese studies."--Ryoko Yamamoto"Pacific Affairs" (06/01/2015)

From the Inside Flap
"In tackling the important and controversial issue of drugs in Japan, Miriam Kingsberg manages to avoid all the pitfalls and shows the extraordinary complexity of the legal, economic, social and political vectors which led to the Kwantung Leased Territory under the Japanese becoming a major center for the production and consumption of narcotics. A lucid, elegantly written, pathbreaking book." --Frank Dikötter, author of Narcotic Culture: A History of Drugs in China

"Moral Nation contributes significantly to an understanding of how narcotics trafficking and narcotics policies shaped Japanese imperialism and Japanese national identity from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century." --David Ambaras, author of Bad Youth: Juvenile Delinquency and the Politics of Everyday Life in Modern Japan

Return to the Sea portrays the life and evolutionary times of marine mammals—from giant whales and sea cows that originated 55 million years ago to the deep diving elephant seals and clam-eating walruses of modern times. This fascinating account of the origin of various marine mammal lineages, some extinct, others extant but threatened, is for the non-specialist. Set against a backdrop of geologic time, changing climates, and changing geography, evolution is the unifying principle that helps us to understand the present day diversity of marine mammals and their responses to environmental challenges. Annalisa Berta explains current controversies and explores patterns of change taking place today, such as shifting food webs and predator-prey relationships, habitat degradation, global warming, and the effects of humans on marine mammal communities.

Excellent introduction and review of the evolution , diversity and adaptation of seals , walrus , whales and dolphins , manatees , polar bears and sea otters . Written by an evolutionary biologist for a non-scientific audience , this book is very accessible to the lay reader . So many fascinating facts and ideas , I was often left craving for more . There is also a broad section on conservation . The illustrations are wonderful

Great, but with a caveat.
By Tim Morris
The preview of this book is in color, so I expected the illustrations to be in color. I downloaded a digital copy to see if it was worth buying, the illustrations were in color there too. But the print version is entirely black and white, which really washes out and reduces the impact of Carl Buell's wonderful paintings. Also, this book skims over some groups, seeming to focus on living groups mainly, with some emphasis also on chronology and faunas. There is only 1 good illustration of "legged whales" in this book, and the book does not even mention Squalodontid "shake toothed" odontocetes, Dusignathine walruses are only mentioned once (those are walrus with 4 tusks, surely worth at least a picture). There is an opportunity to make a book about the mind-boggling diversity of fossil marine mammals, but this book is quite general, and mainly focuses on the ancestry of living groups (except for Desmostylians and Thalassocnus, which are covered fairly well). Good for what you get, but I'm still waiting for a "Big Book of Fossil Marine Mammals" that shows the true diversity in a well-illustrated way, with fossils and life recons (this book does that for a good few groups, but doesn't even touch on how truly diverse these groups are).

Why did the ancestors go back to the sea? Heavy on evolution, a most excellent book.
By lyndonbrecht
The author is an authority on the subject, and is also evidently a skilled writer. This book is extremely well-written. It is a superb introduction to the topic. She covers a huge amount in a short book and makes it accessible to a non-specialist. Books on nature from UC Press are often very good, and this is one of the best.

If you do not credit the theory of evolution, this is not your book. I do, and regard the science as completely convincing. This book is heavy on evolution, and does use some technical vocabulary, but these too are accessible. The bibliography is very good and features many web sites that seem worth exploring (I have not done so).

So, if you are interested in the evolution of whales, walruses, seals and the rest, this is the book. Why the ancestors abandoned the land is ultimately a matter of environmental opportunity--unless somehow they foresaw us humans coming along.

Covert Capital: Landscapes of Denial and the Making of U.S. Empire in the Suburbs of Northern Virginia, by Andrew Friedman

The capital of the U.S. Empire after World War II was not a city. It was an American suburb. In this innovative and timely history, Andrew Friedman chronicles how the CIA and other national security institutions created a U.S. imperial home front in the suburbs of Northern Virginia. In this covert capital, the suburban landscape provided a cover for the workings of U.S. imperial power, which shaped domestic suburban life. The Pentagon and the CIA built two of the largest office buildings in the country there during and after the war that anchored a new imperial culture and social world.

As the U.S. expanded its power abroad by developing roads, embassies, and villages, its subjects also arrived in the covert capital as real estate agents, homeowners, builders, and landscapers who constructed spaces and living monuments that both nurtured and critiqued postwar U.S. foreign policy. Tracing the relationships among American agents and the migrants from Vietnam, El Salvador, Iran, and elsewhere who settled in the southwestern suburbs of D.C., Friedman tells the story of a place that recasts ideas about U.S. immigration, citizenship, nationalism, global interconnection, and ethical responsibility from the post-WW2 period to the present. Opening a new window onto the intertwined history of the American suburbs and U.S. foreign policy, Covert Capital will also give readers a broad interdisciplinary and often surprising understanding of how U.S. domestic and global histories intersect in many contexts and at many scales.

From the Inside Flap
"Amongst the book’s many achievements, it provides an exemplary analysis of the myriad ways in which everyday, intimate, and ‘local’ circuits of power have been deeply imbricated in the ongoing rollout of imperial geopolitics since the mid-20th century."—Jamie Peck, Progress in Human Geography

"This spatial and cultural analysis of seemingly innocuous suburban sprawl offers a compelling picture of a nation that could both deny and pursue Empire simultaneously. It is an example of American Studies at its very best."—Ron Robin, Diplomatic History

"The book is a tour de force."—Christopher Capozzola, Buildings and Landscapes
"Loaded with stunning insights and fascinating revelations about a wooded swath of land just outside the nation's capital, Covert Capital is a model of interdisciplinary scholarship, unearthing the startling connections between landscape, empire and conspiracy."
—Eric Avila, author of Popular Culture in the Age of White Flight: Fear and Fantasy in Suburban Los Angeles

"Brilliantly charting the myriad corridors stretching between Northern Virginia and the far-flung corners of U. S. intervention, Andrew Friedman’s Covert Capital introduces readers to some of mid-to-late twentieth-century suburbia’s open secrets: autocratic allies ensconced in leafy cul-de-sacs, other nations’ futures worked out at poolside, cocktail chatter crossing CIA assets with real estate assets.  In problematizing the boundaries between the foreign and the domestic, and the political and the personal, and in its subtle, interdisciplinary readings of spatial practice and architectural form, Covert Capital is essential reading for scholars seeking to interpret the landscapes of American global power."
—Paul A. Kramer, author of The Blood of Government: Race, Empire, the United States and the Philippines

“In this highly innovative history of the U.S. empire, Andrew Friedman carefully delineates the suburban architecture that shaped even as it camouflaged America's global reach. In tracing the emergence of Northern Virginia as the nation's 'covert capital,' he relocates the foreign in the domestic, showing the local sources of imperial power and the quotidian making of its multi-cultural agents. Ever attentive to the ironies of empire, Friedman deepens our understanding of American power by revealing the material designs of its elaborate disavowals.“
—Vicente L. Rafael, author of The Promise of the Foreign: Nationalism and the Technics of Translation in the Spanish Philippines

One of the best social geographies--in league with Mike Davis's City of Quartz
By L. Kim
Covert Capital is a really engrossing read. Like City of Quartz, it mines the deep history of a region (encompassing the colonial and Confederate context of northern Virginia), while, in the tradition of Fast Food Nation, it investigates how a specific industry--security, in this case--shaped a landscape. All of this in rapid-fire, breathless prose, and filled with a wealth of details (did you know the Pentagon has 600 drinking fountains?).

People interested in the history of American wars, especially as they impact the homefront, will find new revelations and models for thinking about American engagement in the Vietnam War and Iran crisis. Feminists, in particular, will find Friedman's analysis of the wives of diplomats and bureaucrats, and how they parlayed influence through personal networks and leisure activities, such as dinner parties, fascinating. Friedman's account of Eleanor Dulles's power brokering read like histories of Renaissance autocrats Catherine de Medici or Lucretia Borgia!

Design buffs will appreciate Freidman's analysis of the architecture of institutions (CIA headquarters at Langley and Dulles Airport) and domestic structures (the suburban fortresses of Dulles and his relocated Vietnamese and Iranian strongmen), as well as the descriptions of the layout of entire cities (Washington, D.C., Edge City) and the infrastructure, such as highways and airports, built to service these cities. Familiar names such as Philip Johnson and Eero Saarinaan appear in very unfamiliar contexts--the construction of our nation's paranoic security complex.

I found Freidman's sharp, unmitigated prose the most exciting aspect of the book. Gone are the tired euphemisms--he uses "torturer" instead of "interrogation expert" and "colonial independence" for what Americans call Vietnamese "recalcitrance", making a small but significant reparation for the first casualty of war, language.

Original and insightful
By Vinnie Wilhelm
Surprising and unique in its approach, and impressive in its scope. Draws a clear line from the early days of the CIA straight through to the rise of the Homeland Security state after 9-11, showing how the cultural logic of the intelligence community in the early Cold War morphed over time and helped to give us Vietnam, the Iran-Contra affair, and now drone strikes in Pakistan, etc. He does it largely by focusing on the day-to-day world and physical landscape in which the CIA and other intelligence guys actually lived – their houses, their offices, their social connections in Northern Virginia and abroad. Really gives a sense of how these people came to think the way they did, the context that gave rise to the policies they pursued. Demonstrates how U.S. foreign policy shaped and was shaped by the Virginia suburbs, but also, in a bigger sense, how the experience of becoming an imperial power has changed America. Thought-provoking and often very disturbing.

" The author makes a good point in juxtaposing the evils of CIA imperialism abroad ...
By mary hollowell
This book provides an interesting look at the CIA in Northern Virginia by studying its architectural history. Each chapter is an essay in and of itself. While the text is highly scholarly, a layperson can appreciate the historical photographs of Eleanor Dulles' swimming pool and the Kennedy men in a Hickory Hill dining room with a sheepdog. In lieu of ever touring the CIA Langley headquarters themselves, readers can learn about its construction, landscaping, tour bus stops, and interior maintenance issues within these pages. In response to facility maintenance problems, the author shares this old joke, "Maybe the agency should abandon the Langley headquarters and start all over in a bordello in Pittsburgh."

The author makes a good point in juxtaposing the evils of CIA imperialism abroad and the laconic suburban lifestyle in Northern Virginia built on gender stereotyping. The question readers may ask is can the modern day security-industrial-complex create similar enclaves in new locations? Kudos to Andrew Friedman for providing insights in a subtle and unique manner.

Weed Land: Inside America's Marijuana Epicenter and How Pot Went Legit, by Peter Hecht

Early in the morning of September 5, 2002, camouflaged and heavily armed Drug Enforcement Administration agents descended on a terraced marijuana garden. The DEA raid on the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana, a sanctuary for severely ill patients who were using marijuana as medicine, is the riveting opening scene in Weed Land, an up-close journalistic narrative that chronicles a transformative epoch for marijuana in America.

From the 1996 passage of California’s Proposition 215, the nation’s first medical marijuana law, through law enforcement raids, clinical studies that revealed medical benefits for cannabis, and the emergence of a lucrative cannabis industry, Weed Land reveals the changing political, legal, economic, and social dynamics around pot. Peter Hecht, an award-winning journalist from The Sacramento Bee, offers an independent, meticulously reported account of the clashes and contradictions of a burgeoning California cannabis culture that stoked pot liberalization across the country.

From Booklist
Even as resistance to legalizing marijuana eases, clashes between the perspectives of patient advocates, recreational users, cannabis capitalists, law enforcement, and various political factions continue to thrash out what legalization will look like. Journalist Hecht traces the journey toward legalization from a 2002 DEA bust on an idyllic California garden cooperative growing plants for suffering patients to legalization in 20 states and the District of Columbia, including legalized recreational use in Colorado and Washington. Hecht details the successes, setbacks, and culture clashes that took place in California, the epicenter of the debate, where legalization saw its first victories and greatest challenges and where the major effects on the economics, politics and social landscape were first apparent. Along the way, Hecht tracks an assortment of figures—counterculture rebels and many who started as very unlikely advocates for legalized pot—across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, who gained both medical and spiritual knowledge of marijuana as well as the political savvy to wage a long, hard battle. Readers interested in the evolving story of marijuana legalization will appreciate the scope of this book. --Vanessa Bush

Review
"Hecht introduces readers to a cavalcade of characters on all sides of the contentious marijuana issue. These include hard-assed narcs, wheelchair-bound activists, opportunistic entrepreneurs, cigar-chomping union chiefs and other assorted heroes of hemp...It's a complex situation roiling inside a haze of Purple Hindu Kush, but one in which Hecht is able to bring commendable clarity and context."(Kirkus Reviews 2014 03-16)

"In the right hands, nonfiction can be more compelling than fiction. . . . [Hecht] presents a definitive, dramatic chronology of pot and the people who research it, grow it, sell it, use it and regulate it."--Allen Pierleoni"Sacramento Bee" (03/03/2014)

"Peter Hecht, a journalist at "The Sacramento Bee, " charts the evolution of California s medical marijuana law, the first in the nation."--Jerome Groopman"New York Review of Books" (02/20/2014)"

How California has shaped public opinion about weed
By Malvin
“Weed Land” by Peter Hecht offers a fascinating, place-based history of the struggle to legalize marijuana. Mr. Hecht is among a select few award-winning journalists to specialize in full-time reporting on the cannabis industry in California. This excellent book offers one of the most insightful, engaging and interesting narratives on how the government’s war on weed is well on its way to being burnt out.

Mr. Hecht shares California’s experiences over the past two decades, from the disgraceful raid on the compassionate care organization WAMM to the founding of Oaksterdam University, the emergence of a grow economy in Humboldt County, reefer research, pot doc dispensaries, the defeat of Prop 19 and more. Through his skillful research and storytelling, Mr. Hecht demonstrates how California has led public opinion and shaped the debate about weed across the country.

On that point, we understand how the historic vote to legalize the recreational use of cannabis in Colorado and Washington states were informed by California’s successes and failures. On the one hand, we see how California entrepreneurs have played a significant role in ramping up the pot industry in these states. On the other hand, the city of Los Angeles’ troubled dispensary system no doubt influenced Colorado’s decision to draft a far more comprehensive set of rules for its fledgling cannabis industry.

Mr. Hecht is to be commended for profiling the many courageous individuals who have risked personal freedoms and fortunes for the cause. These include WAMM’s Mike and Vickie Corral; Oaksterdam’s visionary founder Richard Lee; pot ‘chronnoisseur’ Dragonfly de la Luz; medical cannabis researcher Dr. Donald Abrams; Harborside Health Center’s Steve DeAngelo; unionizer Dan Rush; and many more. Of course, Mr. Hecht criticizes a few of the black hats who have exploited the struggle for their own gain, including the robotic federal agent Patrick Kelly and the unscrupulous pot scamster Yan Ebyam.

I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Excellent "What If" Book
By Amazon Customer
This book is a relatively easy read, but it is definitely thought-provoking. It gives us an idea of what the U.S. will be like AFTER it has been legalized in most states and by the Federal Government. What is especially interesting is it gives many different possible "blueprints" for legalization by describing the various ways each state could handle legalization. These "blueprints" can be used in the real world as a starter for ideas on how to legalize Cannabis in any state. I do recommend this book.

A balanced account
By Dubitato
Hecht did his homework. He amassed an enormous amount of inside information about almost every aspect of the marijuana business in California. He captured the tension between the medical marijuana true believers and those interested in making money from selling marijuana. Weed Land also offers some meaningful insight into law enforcement and how at least some members of law enforcement in California have overreached to "legitimate" medical marijuana dispensaries, leading to a strong backlash. Hecht has written a rare book in the marijuana literature: a balanced honest reporter's view of a complex subject. Let's hope he plans a sequel when California next votes whether to legalize marijuana in 2015 or 2016.

Assimilating Seoul: Japanese Rule and the Politics of Public Space in Colonial Korea, 1910-1945 (Asia Pacific Modern), by Todd A. Henry

Assimilating Seoul, the first book-length study written in English about Seoul during the colonial period, challenges conventional nationalist paradigms by revealing the intersection of Korean and Japanese history in this important capital. Through microhistories of Shinto festivals, industrial expositions, and sanitation campaigns, Todd A. Henry offers a transnational account that treats the city’s public spaces as "contact zones," showing how residents negotiated pressures to become loyal, industrious, and hygienic subjects of the Japanese empire. Unlike previous, top-down analyses, this ethnographic history investigates modalities of Japanese rule as experienced from below. Although the colonial state set ambitious goals for the integration of Koreans, Japanese settler elites and lower-class expatriates shaped the speed and direction of assimilation by bending government initiatives to their own interests and identities. Meanwhile, Korean men and women of different classes and generations rearticulated the terms and degree of their incorporation into a multiethnic polity. Review
"A major contribution to the study of the history of twentieth-century Korea."--John Whittier Treat"Korea Journal" (04/01/2015)

"A most welcome addition to the field of Korean studies."--Alexis Dudden"American Historical Review" (04/01/2015)

"An important contribution . . . impressive depth."--Mark Caprio"Reviews in History" (04/23/2015)

"The first in-depth study in the English language of the history of Seoul in the first half of the twentieth century . . . entertaining and highly readable . . . a welcome addition to the growing literature on Korea s colonial history and on urban history more generally."--Janet Poole"H-Net" (07/01/2015)"

"["Assimilating Seoul"] delivers an impressive contribution to the growing collection of research on Japanese imperial history in Korea, and the Japanese-Korean relationship in particular. ... It defies categorization as either a Japanese or Korean history to serve as a valuable artery of both during the time of Japan s colonial subjugation of the peninsula."--Mark Caprio"Reviews in History" (04/23/2015)"

"A detailed study of Korean and Japanese identity and adaptability in the colonial setting... "Assimilating Seoul" will be required reading for anyone studying the Japanese colonial period in Korea, for scholars of colonialism in general, and for students wanting to look beyond purely nationalist narratives for understandings of the past."--Donald N. Clark "Pacific Affairs "

"A new and insightful perspective."--Steven Denney"Sino-NK" (01/23/2015)

From the Inside Flap
"Moving beyond top-down accounts of colonialism, Assimilating Seoul offers a richly textured, on-the-ground understanding of how Japanese rule operated and was contested in Seoul. The book’s careful and vivid reconstruction of the entanglements of the state with city residents makes the powerful argument that the materiality of colonial power should be understood in the configuration and experiences of urban spaces. It is a splendid combination of urban and colonial histories." —Gyan Prakash, author of Mumbai Fables

"In this illuminating examination of spatial politics in Japanese-occupied Seoul, Todd Henry takes us into the labyrinth of colonial governmentality.  His captivating analysis of public ritual, city planning, and industrial expositions reveals the varied uses of urban form as a technology of rule--as well as the limitations of state power. A model study of the colonial city."—Louise Young, author of Beyond the Metropolis: Second Cities and Modern Life in Interwar Japan

"Few issues in the history of world colonialism are as conceptually challenging as the problem of assimilation within the Japanese empire. Henry offers a fascinating approach to the contentious politics of what it meant to be a Korean colonial subject under Japanese rule. The many answers to this problem are sure to stimulate debate."—Andre Schmid, Professor of East Asian Studies, University of Toronto

"This is one of the best books on modern Korean history I've read in recent years. Henry breaks new ground, especially in English, in his focus on the 'spaces' of colonial rule, and his command of such rich and varied primary sources is impressive. Assimilating Seoul is a fascinating read."—Carter J. Eckert, Yoon Se Young Professor of Korean History, Harvard University

This lively book sweeps across dramatic and varied terrains—volcanoes and glaciers, billabongs and canyons, prairies and rain forests—to explore how humans have made sense of our planet’s marvelous landscapes. In a rich weave of scientific, cultural, and personal stories, The Face of the Earth examines mirages and satellite images, swamp-dwelling heroes and Tibetan nomads, cave paintings and popular movies, investigating how we live with the great shaping forces of nature—from fire to changing climates and the intricacies of adaptation. The book illuminates subjects as diverse as the literary life of hollow Earth theories, the links between the Little Ice Age and Frankenstein’s monster, and the spiritual allure of deserts and their scarce waters. Including vivid, on-the-spot accounts by scientists and writers in Saudi Arabia, Australia, Alaska, England, the Rocky Mountains, Antarctica, and elsewhere, The Face of the Earth charts the depth and complexity of our interdependence with the natural world.

From the Inside Flap
"To comprehend climate change via arts and humanities as well as science and engineering demands either a Leonardo da Vinci or the gentle audacity and magisterial breadth of SueEllen Campbell."—Richard C. J. Somerville, Scripps Institution of Oceanography

"A masterful combination of the precision and power of the sciences with the lyricism and insight of the humanities. Campbell and her colleagues have succeeded by braiding clear, accurate scientific explanation with forays into mythological and literary expressions of the human relationship to Earth."—Michael P. Branch, editor of John Muir's Last Journey

"The authors of this astonishingly original project explore nature's meanings in ways that blend the insights of plate tectonics and evolution with imagery from authors such as Dante, Milton, and the Brontes. Dozens of vivid personal narratives, written by a community of writers, ground such perspectives in explorations of rifts, bogs, volcanoes, forests, grasslands, and deserts. From all these diverse encounters with the face of nature can arise a more alert and appreciative receptiveness to the living patterns of which we ourselves are part."—John Elder, author of Reading the Mountains and The Frog Run

“Sparkling science writing, cultural and artistic insights about deep time human history, and superb personal essays on place may never have been combined so winningly in a volume as they are in The Face of the Earth. I could not put this book down. Its evocative ideas and rendered experiences delight the mind like embers from a stirred campfire."—Dan Flores, author of The Natural West and Visions of the Big Sky

A much-needed alternative approach...
By swarburt
I read this book while I took a Physical Geography course. Overall, The Face of the Earth was a very good read, especially for this particular course. Much of what was explained and explored in the book could be found at some point in the class material, sometimes word-for-word. In splitting the book up into five separate chapters, the authors could adequately explain in some detail how each system functioned as well as how that system tied together into one larger picture. The parts of the book that explained these were also kept from becoming too dense with the addition of poems, story fragments, and other works of literature, which a person with little interest in the "hard sciences" might find more appealing.
The best part of this book which ties it all together is the personal essays from twenty-six different people: Biologists, geologists, professors of literature, and engineer, and an environmental educator, to name a few. Each of these short essays I read was mainly a description of what that person was seeing while they were in the place they were writing about. One in particular was about the tall grass prairie and what kinds of plants, birds, and mammals could be seen. It went into a deep visualization of the thoughts and feelings that arose within the author while he was enjoying and analyzing the scenery around him. The material never seemed to be complaining about the lack of something; they were each simply enjoying what was there at the time.
Throughout the book, it was apparent that it was not like most other climate-related works that I had read before, which go into great detail about what has been done to the environment, what is still happening, and the impending dangers that follow our self-destructive behavior. It is all often overwhelming for the average person. This book, however, gets the reader thinking about WHY we should enjoy the systems and environmental undertakings that the Earth has to offer by presenting them through the visualization I explained above. From this, one can form their own opinions on what should be done to protect it. All-too-often I feel like many are getting others to "save the environment" without getting us to really step back and look at why we ought to save the environment, whatever that phrase may mean.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the earth and its systems without going into an overwhelming amount of scientific detail and statistics. It was a great read to go along with my college course. Also, I think it would be a good read for anyone wishing to expand their view of what exactly the environment means to them. After reading this book, the question that seems to remain is: Do we value the nature that we are so dependent on?

Purity, Body, and Self in Early Rabbinic Literature (S. Mark Taper Foundation Imprint in Jewish Studies), by Mira Balberg

This book explores the ways in which the early rabbis reshaped biblical laws of ritual purity and impurity and argues that the rabbis’ new purity discourse generated a unique notion of a bodily self. Focusing on the Mishnah, a Palestinian legal codex compiled around the turn of the third century CE, Mira Balberg shows how the rabbis constructed the processes of contracting, conveying, and managing ritual impurity as ways of negotiating the relations between one’s self and one’s body and, more broadly, the relations between one’s self and one’s human and nonhuman environments.

With their heightened emphasis on subjectivity, consciousness, and self-reflection, the rabbis reinvented biblically inherited language and practices in a way that resonated with central cultural concerns and intellectual commitments of the Greco-Roman Mediterranean world. Purity, Body, and Self in Early Rabbinic Literature adds a new dimension to the study of practices of self-making in antiquity by suggesting that not only philosophical exercises but also legal paradigms functioned as sites through which the self was shaped and improved.
