Weill's Musical Theater: Stages of Reform, by Stephen Hinton

In the first musicological study of Kurt Weill’s complete stage works, Stephen Hinton charts the full range of theatrical achievements by one of twentieth-century musical theater’s key figures. Hinton shows how Weill’s experiments with a range of genres—from one-act operas and plays with music to Broadway musicals and film-opera—became an indispensable part of the reforms he promoted during his brief but intense career. Confronting the divisive notion of “two Weills”—one European, the other American—Hinton adopts a broad and inclusive perspective, establishing criteria that allow aspects of continuity to emerge, particularly in matters of dramaturgy. Tracing his extraordinary journey as a composer, the book shows how Weill’s artistic ambitions led to his working with a remarkably heterogeneous collection of authors, such as Georg Kaiser, Bertolt Brecht, Moss Hart, Alan Jay Lerner, and Maxwell Anderson.

"Eminently readable, with or without his music playing in the background. Professor Hinton is a fine writer who conveys what he knows and feels in terms insightful, intuitive and nuanced, yet accessible to those of us who are musically marginalized."--"Washington Ind Rev of Bks"

An in-depth view of the entire oeuvre of Weill's stage compositions. . . . A scholarly and thoroughly researched work. . . . Highly Recommended. --E. C. Skiles, Lone Star College-Kingwood"Choice" (12/01/2012)"

From the Inside Flap
“This book, the first scholarly consideration of Weill’s complete output of stage works, is without doubt the most important critical study of the composer’s oeuvre to date in any language. Hinton’s scholarship is superior and his insights original and illuminating. The product of several decades of engagement with Weill’s works, their sources and reception, as well as the secondary literature, the book is a stunning achievement. Brilliantly conceived and executed, it will take its place as one of the cornerstones of Weill studies.”—Kim H. Kowalke, University of Rochester and President, Kurt Weill Foundation for Music

“In Weill’s Musical Theater: Stages of Reform, Stephen Hinton reminds us that Kurt Weill was always a revolutionary. The composer’s insistent dedication to a provocative, constantly evolving lyric theater that spoke directly to audiences meant that Weill remained as controversial as he was popular. The celebrity that endeared him to Broadway made him anathema in Berlin. Some sixty years after Weill’s death, Hinton is finally able to demonstrate the consistent brilliance, theatrical power, and coherence of a composer who revolutionized every genre he touched (or used) and whose collaborators read as a who’s who of twentieth-century theater.”

—David Savran, author of Highbrow/Lowdown: Theater, Jazz, and the Making of the New Middle Class

"Stephen Hinton presents us with an image of Weill that is at once monumental yet still alive. A truly Protean figure, Weill is not an easy man to grasp in his totality; Brecht once wrote that a man thrown into water will have to develop webbed feet, and as a refugee from Nazi Germany, Weill had to become a cultural amphibian. But in Weill's Musical Theater we see the composer from every angle: through the gaze of countless critics and reviewers, through Weill's own eyes, and finally through the filter of Hinton's judicious, focused prose. This account will stand."—Daniel Albright, author of Untwisting the Serpent: Modernism in Music, Literature, and Other Arts

About the Author
Stephen Hinton is Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities at Stanford University. His publications include Kurt Weill: The Threepenny Opera.

The Fish in the Forest: Salmon and the Web of Life, by Dale Stokes

The Fish in the Forest is an elegantly written, beautifully illustrated exploration of the complex web of relationships between the salmon of the Pacific Northwest and the surrounding ecosystem. Dale Stokes shows how nearly all aspects of this fragile ecosystem—from streambeds to treetops, from sea urchins to orcas to bears, from rain forests to kelp forests—are intimately linked with the biology of the Pacific salmon. Illustrated with 70 stunning color photographs by Doc White, The Fish in the Forest demonstrates how the cycling of nutrients between the ocean and the land, mediated by the life and death of the salmon, is not only key to understanding the landscape of the north Pacific coast, but is also a powerful metaphor for all of life on earth.

From Booklist
The health and vitality of the Pacific Northwest forest ecosystem depends on the vigor of seven species of salmon, according to Scripps Institute oceanographer Stokes. Opportunistic bears, wolves, and eagles are not the only beneficiaries from the annual salmon runs, during which the fish swim upstream to spawn and die. The region’s forest and all of its residents are enriched by the tremendous load of nutrients and minerals that the salmon bring up from the ocean to the land when they return. Noting that insects, wildflowers, and trees are more plentiful near healthy salmon streams than along streams whose fisheries have been depleted by environmental disturbances or industrial fishing, the author seeks readers’ support in protecting the salmon, which are revered by the region’s Native tribes. Aimed at the general public, this natural-history and environmental essay is a fairly quick read and a good addition to science collections at public libraries. --Rick Roche

Review
"Eminently readable."--T. E. Reinchen"Quarterly Review of Biology" (06/01/2015)

From the Inside Flap
"Salmon were the most important keystone vertebrates in the history of the North Pacific until we arrived. Stokes’ intelligent text and White’s luscious pictures will explain why--and why they must be saved."
John E. McCosker, Chair of Aquatic Biology, California Academy of Sciences.

"This is a truly lovely, entertaining, and informative book. It pays homage to the intricacies of salmon, from molecules to ecosystems, with accurate, readable text and great photos. With subtle passion, it makes the case for preserving the amazing salmon-forest connection. Buy a copy for yourself and for a local policy maker; help make Pacific Coast society more salmon-centric."

The threads of life
By Paul Dayton
Good ecologists talk about the importance of understanding relationships and some of the better ones attempt to measure strong and weak interactions. Written for a lay audience, this book does a wonderful job of describing how different populations relate to each other by focusing on how salmon flow through several ecosystems. With excellent prose and beautiful photos this book describes in great detail how salmon influence the terrestrial, riverine, and marine ecosystems, how their presence cascades through nature. Stokes weaves this story with a clarity that rivals and possibly surpasses that of Leapold, Ricketts, and Muir. This is a book for all seasons and all audiences.

The interlinked fate of salmon and temperate rainforest.
By lyndonbrecht
This is well-written and excellently illustrated. It looks at salmon and Pacific temperate rainforest, and the general area of Pacific salmon species migrations--Northern California to Korea.

The main point is the very complex interactions involving salmon. Salmon migrate upstream and are eaten or die, and essentially bring back a very large amount of nitrogen and phosphorus from the ocean, which spreads through interlocking food webs fertilizing the forest and improving primary productivity, so to speak. He estimates that before the commercial fishing era, and here he seems to be speaking of the Pacific Northwest up to Alaska, that spawning salmon transported 7,000 tons of elemental nitrogen and 1,000 tons of phosphorus each year. The fish in the forest is this.

This description may seem a bit like chemistry, and it is, but the book is well done and deserves a reading by anyone interested in the links among ecosystems.

Incarcerating the Crisis: Freedom Struggles and the Rise of the Neoliberal State (American Crossroads), by Jordan T. Camp

The United States currently has the largest prison population on the planet. Over the last four decades, structural unemployment, concentrated urban poverty, and mass homelessness have also become permanent features of the political economy. These developments are without historical precedent, but not without historical explanation. In this searing critique, Jordan T. Camp traces the rise of the neoliberal carceral state through a series of turning points in U.S. history including the Watts insurrection in 1965, the Detroit rebellion in 1967, the Attica uprising in 1971, the Los Angeles revolt in 1992, and events in post-Katrina New Orleans in 2005. Incarcerating the Crisis argues that these dramatic events coincided with the emergence of neoliberal capitalism and the state’s attempts to crush radical social movements. Through an examination of the poetic visions of social movements—including those by James Baldwin, Marvin Gaye, June Jordan, José Ramírez, and Sunni Patterson—it also suggests that alternative outcomes have been and continue to be possible.

From the Inside Flap
"Incarcerating the Crisis offers carefully researched accounts of major historical conjunctures, elucidating how ideologies of race and criminalization have been central to the neoliberal expansion of policing and prisons. But at the same time, Camp attends to the poetic imaginaries that generate necessary hope and possible futures."—Angela Y. Davis, Distinguished Professor Emerita, History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies, University of California, Santa Cruz

"Incarcerating the Crisis is a work of staggering insight, bold imagination, and political urgency. In what may be described as a genealogy of neoliberal racial and security regimes, Jordan Camp skillfully demonstrates how moral panics are also racial panics, with the threat to social order displaced onto black and brown bodies either warehoused in prisons, colonized in ghettoes, or drowning in flood waters. Essential reading for anyone interested in race, neoliberalism, and social movements—mandatory for anyone interested in liberation."—Robin D. G. Kelley, author of Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination

"Incarcerating the Crisis carefully delineates how political elites translated the crisis of Jim Crow capitalism into the neoliberal racial security state, the brutal regime that disavows racism while caging and killing the racially and economically marginalized. But the brilliance of Camp’s work is in illuminating the contingencies within this history of the racialization of security. The path from plantation to prison was not inescapable. Along with the prose of repression there was also a poetics of resistance, an insurgent polyculturalism that created exit signs and even hope."—Naomi Murakawa, author of The First Civil Right: How Liberals Built Prison America

“Incarcerating the Crisis movingly resists the temptation to imagine that our plight results from social movements being so easily defeated. Again and again Camp shows with sober analysis and passionate care that popular creativity and resistance were the very stuff to which brutal neoliberal policies responded and have continued to respond. An eloquent, learned, and optimistic study by an important new voice in American Studies.”—David Roediger, author of Seizing Freedom: Slave Emancipation and Liberty for All

Excellent book. Builds largely off of the insights of Policing the Crisis, and applies them deftly to the mass criminalization of poor people of color in the US. Well written, very readable, not overly esoteric, very persuasive. (Also a very nice, terse critique of Wacquant, who, perhaps, is referenced as an authority more than he should be w/r/t mass incarceration in the US.)

These compelling stories and photographs take us to places like Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, Ivindo National Park in Gabon, and the Taï National Park in Côte d’Ivoire for an intimate and revealing look at the lives of African wild apes—and at the lives of the humans who study them. In tales of adventure, research, and conservation, veteran field researchers and conservationists describe exciting discoveries made over the past few decades about chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas. The book features vivid descriptions of interactions among these highly intelligent creatures as they hunt, socialize, and play. More difficult themes emerge as well, including the threats apes face from poaching, disease, and deforestation. In stories that are often moving and highly personal, this book takes measure of how special the great apes are and discusses positive conservation efforts, including ecotourism, that can help bring these magnificent animals back from the brink of extinction.

Gorillas, chimps, and bonobos
By Hans U. Weber
Ten contributors, mostly scientists and field workers from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, have produced a beautifully illustrated and well-written book of field notes and stories that should interest all who are eager to learn more about the African apes. How much longer will these intelligent animals survive?

The Road Out: A Teacher's Odyssey in Poor America, by Deborah Hicks

Can one teacher truly make a difference in her students’ lives when everything is working against them? Can a love for literature and learning save the most vulnerable of youth from a life of poverty? The Road Out is a gripping account of one teacher’s journey of hope and discovery with her students—girls growing up poor in a neighborhood that was once home to white Appalachian workers, and is now a ghetto. Deborah Hicks, set out to give one group of girls something she never had: a first-rate education, and a chance to live their dreams. A contemporary tragedy is brought to life as she leads us deep into the worlds of Adriana, Blair, Mariah, Elizabeth, Shannon, Jessica, and Alicia?seven girls coming of age in poverty.

This is a moving story about girls who have lost their childhoods, but who face the street’s torments with courage and resiliency. “I want out,” says 10-year-old Blair, a tiny but tough girl who is extremely poor and yet deeply imaginative and precocious. Hicks tries to convey to her students a sense of the power of fiction and of sisterhood to get them through the toughest years of adolescence. But by the time they’re sixteen, eight years after the start of the class, the girls are experiencing the collision of their youthful dreams with the pitfalls of growing up in chaotic single-parent families amid the deteriorating cityscape. Yet even as they face disappointments and sometimes despair, these girls cling to their desire for a better future. The author’s own life story—from a poorly educated girl in a small mountain town to a Harvard-educated writer, teacher, and social advocate—infuses this chronicle with a message of hope.

Review
“It’s become a standard book and movie trope: An idealistic teacher walks into a classroom of hardened, at-risk students and strives to reach them. But the outlines of the story, while familiar, can still surprise and inspire.” (Boston Globe Book Section 2013-03-02)

“A valuable look at the intellectual lives (and fragile potential) of girls buffeted by American social realities, and an excellent reflection on the challenges of teaching.” (Kirkus Reviews 2013-01-03)

From the Inside Flap
"I was one of those girls reading books the librarians hesitated to let me carry away, but taking from those books the resilience and strength necessary to change my life. Reading The Road Out, I was taken back to my own teenage years in the best way possible. From a place where hope seems almost impossible, we find more than hope—we find inspiration. Read this book, it is a cure for what I sometimes think is the only unforgivable sin—despair."—Dorothy Allison, author of Bastard Out of Carolina

"The Road Out is vital and enriching. I think it's an important book that should be required reading for every American who's concerned with education of the poorest and most forgotten in our society. The stories [in this book] filled me with outrage and sorrow. But there's hope here, as well, and with more teachers like Deborah Hicks, perhaps that ray of hope will grow to a beam...and then to a flood." —Stephen King

“The Road Out is a moving testament to the power of fiction and friendship—as compassionate teacher Deborah Hicks gently leads us into the lives of a group of at-risk girls growing up in a white Appalachian ghetto in Cincinnati. Here are the girls who fall through all the cracks: poor, often all but abandoned, coming of age in the toughest of circumstances, yet filled with dreams nonetheless. This is an extraordinary, eye-opening, riveting book about hidden girlhoods, and real girls who will stay with you forever. Wonderful writing, astute social commentary, full of heart. A beautiful and very important book.”—Lee Smith, author of The Last Girls among other novels

"A wrenching, extraordinary tale. The Road Out is not a story of victims, but a story of passion and literacy. With abundant authority and vulnerability, Hicks uncovers unexpected insights and offers new ways to bring a love of reading along with some hope into the far corners of urban lives on the margins."—Carol Stack, author of All Our Kin and Call To Home

"This stunning book will open your eyes and break your heart. Reminiscent of Robert Coles' magisterial Children of Crisis, The Road Out is the best book I've read on the inner lives of working-class girls."—Mike Rose, author of Back to School: Why Everyone Deserves a Second Chance at Education

"The Road Outis a powerful, beautifully written memoir. The author is a remarkable teacher who recounts how she struggled to use her love of literacy to help young girls in Appalachia confront the devastating forces of rural poverty that she herself faced as a child. Like all great works of literature, it tells us as much about the author and her own continuous learning experiences as it does about the remarkable girls whose stories she tells. The Road Out is ultimately a story of hope and a vindication of courage. It is also a warning shot for school reformers who preach simplistic answers to the question of how schools can deal with the impact of poverty on learning."—Edward Fiske, former Education Editor of The New York Times, and editor of the The Fiske Guide to Colleges

About the Author

a compelling read
By Jude
The Road Out vividly brings to life the stories of adolescent girls in Cincinnati's Appalachian ghetto. Their stories are little known, but they deserve to be famous. Reading The Road Out we come to understand in human terms the breadth and depth of problems confronting the lives of the unknown poor: parents too self-absorbed or drug addicted to raise their children, schools lacking resources or unable to see their students' potential, neighborhoods that offer those who live there little more than drugs and fights. The author ties the girls' histories to her own struggle to redeem herself from the poverty of circumstance and opportunity of her own Appalachian childhood. The prose is lively and page turning. For those who think education is all about raising test scores, Hicks illustrates how literature, the pleasure of reading, can provide a road out, a stimulus for wanting to learn. The girls are heartbreaking, but they're also so very alive--smart, sassy, resilient, and surprising. It's a book to savor and remember.

Deborah Hicks's book is a kind of "education memoir" about a special after-school reading program Hicks created for six disadvantaged girls in Cincinnati. Hicks details the lives of her students, drawing parallels with her own childhood in Appalachia, and intersperses the girls' stories with details of her literature-based curriculum and its effects upon the girls' emerging self-awareness. Between the lines is a veiled critique of the national high-stakes testing policies initiated under No Child Left Behind, with the implication that not only does "teaching to the test" deprive students (especially poor students) of valuable instructional time, but also that standardized tests are unequipped to accurately measure real intelligence. Hicks begins her after-school program in the hope of showing these poor young girls a "road out" of their bleak lives, a road paved by literature. Sadly, though perhaps predictably, Hicks's efforts and commitments do not bear the fruit she had hoped for.

Hicks is clearly not only a compassionate person, but also a creative and inspired teacher with a unique understanding of the lives of her students, who are one generation removed from rural Appalachia and now live in a white urban ghetto. But her book, I feel does not go far enough. She muses throughout the book about the possible reasons that she was able to get out of Appalachia and go to an Ivy League school while her charges are not, but she never mentions the most obvious reasons of all: her parents were married; they were not addicted to drugs; and her father had a job. Hicks's family was stable, in spite of the fact that is was not, as she suggests, happy, and this kind of stability is as foreign to the chaotic lives of her young students as the moon. In the final analysis, then, Deborah Hicks had very little in common with her students, so she failed to gauge that her after-school program would be, ultimately, so ineffective.

I do not intend this review to be a conservative polemic, but a writer as deeply invested as Hicks simply has to acknowledge that short-sighted federal educational policies are not the cause of her students' failure to leave behind lives of impoverishment and emerge as members of the wider culture. The extreme instability of her students' family lives simply could not fail to mitigate every good that Hicks intended to bring to them. Even a teacher as committed and creative as Hicks clearly is -- I found her lesson plans inspiring -- can do little to make up for the cultural and emotional impoverishment of a subculture of intergenerational poverty, addiction, and dependence -- a subculture that essentially eats its young.

Dreams and the road out
By Lou pendergrast
"When I was a young girl growing up in a sleepy Appalachian paper mill town, I had a lot of dreams for a girl with limited opportunity. Probably the biggest of all my dreams was just to get away from where I was."

This is the opening testament of the author who set on a road to do that very same thing for a group of unfortunate girls that reside in conditions more darker and truer than fiction, this dilemma is a common and increasing reality of our modern age.

She goes on to write in her introduction.

"My own life journey, from a poorly educated girl in a small mountain town to a Harvard educated writer, teacher, and social advocate is one message of hope. But then so are the stories of seven determined girls who were every bit as gifted and promising as I once was. Each different, but all steadfast in their desire for a better life than the one they had inherited. These daughters and granddaughters of southern Appalachian workers have grit and resolve, but they need much more if they are to succeed in our new unforgiving economy. The stories that follow provide a chronicle of one teacher's odyssey in poor America, and of the pitfalls and possibilities that arose along a road carved out of simple materials: literature, reading and stories of childhood dreams."

I fitting account of the tragedy and triumph that resides in these pages touching and awe inspiring. A teacher, a heroine, equipped with a pencil, a sword of victory.
With hope and belief in oneself on a journey, a road on out to a greater good, the pen could be mightier against the sword/destroyers of dreams.
A true story to read, that may inspire many.
We need more teachers like this to instil a love for the written word, I know from first hand experience, I left school at 16 born of immigrant parents, of a illiterate mother, how it sadness me to see how my mother lost out in life without being able to read words and sentences, to joy at beautiful prose, to be enlightened and aware of many things in our glorious world of written words.

Every Monday after school during the regular school year, and every day during summer school this teacher met with her students to read and talk about books and to write stories of their own.
Literature proved to me a more powerful teaching tool than anything that this teacher could use.
What she learned was that they wanted to read of horrors and the supernatural as she explains here.

"The parts of the story jammed against one another: a young girl, Stephen King, horror. This want what I had in mind when I had created my literature class for girls."

She goes on to tell what she had learned of this..

"In their improbable way, I was learning, that horror stories offered hope. Hapless heroines could outwit sinister spirits and crazies. Even stories of Rose Madder could find the inner strength to defeat the horrifying monster that Norman had become. Spirits such as Blair's Ghost Rose could speak out in angry voices, letting others know how trapped and alone they felt. I too was trying to create hope around the only form of transcendence I knew: an education rich in literature and reading."

And also in this paragraph.

"The young girls in my reading class were not alone. Horror fiction had become rampant in popular culture, so much so that parents and teachers had begun to voice concern about images of maiming and psychopathic mayhem flooding the popular book and movie market. These movies- Final Destination, The House of 1,000 corpses, Slash, 13 Ghosts-were geared to a ravenous audience of horror fans, many of them still in their teens. Such trends had led to a flurry of writing about the subject by literary and film critics, cultural scholars, and even psychoanalysts.
One explanation offered for the feeling that my girls experienced when reading scary books is the notion of a psychic safety valve. Fans of horror and ghost stories can experience a thrilling read, and yet know that in the end they will be safe. This can be cathartic-like screaming bloody murder on a roller coaster ride, then walking off with tears of laughter streaming down your face.
But this wasn't the only explanation for the strange appeal of horror. Every reader of fiction searches for the threads that can connect her life to the landscape she inherits. And these threads of connections need not be real-or not something you can see or touch in the everyday world. Fiction's special appeal is that it can take us out of this world and help us connect with what can only be seen through the imagination's inner eye. Part of the beauty of ghost stories was that they were not real. Crazy, weird, and Elizabeth's favourite word, boring-this is how my students felt about reading a realistic novel.
Elizabeth wasn't yet ready for novel about a girl who was "just like her." Could I bring myself to enjoy the kind of book that she loved?"

An awe inspiring story on a woman and seven girls battle against the odds.
These girls she taught had come from poor families, broken, and problem riddled.
Some girls had parents in jail or dead, addicted to drugs, alcohol, or who were violent abusers.
They, under this mentoring, had hope instilled but ultimately their surroundings, their home lives still had a tragic and out of their hands part in their fates.
Think in a more pleasant tone of the great Matilda, from that Roald Dahl story, and how she was helped by her kind and committed teacher against a bad teacher and bad parenting. A great teacher does wonders, a soul that one would look back on with pleasant memories and happiness on how they did it right!
A change needs to come about, to save our youth, we all need to act and help in the greater cause and message that lies in this unmissable read for 2013.

Excerpts:

` "What is it about Stephen King's books that you really enjoy?" I asked.
"The parts when scary things happen," said Blair. "And I like to read long books." Rose Madder was 420 pages long.

This story of one precocious young girl, her Stephen King book, and a hopelessly idealistic teacher helps to shed light on a big dilemma. How can education open doors for girls such as Blair, the daughter of poor whites, and a girl with dreams as big as any girl in America? Her small but important life story is part of a larger American narrative. She is the young heir to a labor history, a slice of our national life that is disappearing. The courageous southern migrants who fled Appalachian poverty had come to Midwest cities in search of manufacturing jobs and a better future for their children. Now young Blair had inherited a forgotten landscape, tormented by job loss and a growing street-drug problem. Dropout rates were high too, reflecting an inter-generational history-the earlier workers of Blair's neighborhood could find jobs without high school diploma-but also a sense of detachment from school. What Blair most needed was a first-rate education that would allow her to create a new kind of future, leading her away from the streets and their torments and toward he life her Grandma Lilly envisioned for her.
But when I set out to become an educational agent for hope and change for Blair, I discovered that the single thing that could have made the biggest difference in her life-public education-was itself part of the problem. In spite of the intentions of individuals at Blair's school, who were as hardworking as they were big-hearted, she was caught up in the same two-tiered system of schooling I had lived through. Its like John Dawson, an Appalachian migrant who moved to inner-city Chicago in the 1950s, remarked: "A poor kid don't get the same teachin' that a rich kid gets." `

A Free Will: Origins of the Notion in Ancient Thought (Sather Classical Lectures, Vol. 68), by Michael Frede

Where does the notion of free will come from? How and when did it develop, and what did that development involve? In Michael Frede's radically new account of the history of this idea, the notion of a free will emerged from powerful assumptions about the relation between divine providence, correctness of individual choice, and self-enslavement due to incorrect choice. Anchoring his discussion in Stoicism, Frede begins with Aristotle--who, he argues, had no notion of a free will--and ends with Augustine. Frede shows that Augustine, far from originating the idea (as is often claimed), derived most of his thinking about it from the Stoicism developed by Epictetus.

The Fate of Place: A Philosophical History, by Edward Casey

In this imaginative and comprehensive study, Edward Casey, one of the most incisive interpreters of the Continental philosophical tradition, offers a philosophical history of the evolving conceptualizations of place and space in Western thought. Not merely a presentation of the ideas of other philosophers, The Fate of Place is acutely sensitive to silences, absences, and missed opportunities in the complex history of philosophical approaches to space and place. A central theme is the increasing neglect of place in favor of space from the seventh century A.D. onward, amounting to the virtual exclusion of place by the end of the eighteenth century.

Casey begins with mythological and religious creation stories and the theories of Plato and Aristotle and then explores the heritage of Neoplatonic, medieval, and Renaissance speculations about space. He presents an impressive history of the birth of modern spatial conceptions in the writings of Newton, Descartes, Leibniz, and Kant and delineates the evolution of twentieth-century phenomenological approaches in the work of Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, Bachelard, and Heidegger. In the book's final section, Casey explores the postmodern theories of Foucault, Derrida, Tschumi, Deleuze and Guattari, and Irigaray.

Amazon.com Review
We may talk of virtual reality and speak in virtual conversations, but we simply can't help actually occupying a concrete place. Long marginalized by philosophers, the idea of place is here rescued from the dustbins of philosophical history in a meticulous tracing of the idea of place from the immanent categories of Aristotle, to the Enlightenment dissolution of place into space, and to Martin Heidegger's reclamation of place from space. Edward Casey leads us through rocky and challenging terrain to a destination that already has been profitably mined for its literary riches by the likes of Gary Snyder and William Kittredge. The Fate of Place is a welcome addition and sure to be influential.

Invisible Families: Gay Identities, Relationships, and Motherhood among Black Women, by Mignon Moore

Mignon R. Moore brings to light the family life of a group that has been largely invisible—gay women of color—in a book that challenges long-standing ideas about racial identity, family formation, and motherhood. Drawing from interviews and surveys of one hundred black gay women in New York City, Invisible Families explores the ways that race and class have influenced how these women understand their sexual orientation, find partners, and form families. In particular, the study looks at the ways in which the past experiences of women who came of age in the 1960s and 1970s shape their thinking, and have structured their lives in communities that are not always accepting of their openly gay status. Overturning generalizations about lesbian families derived largely from research focused on white, middle-class feminists, Invisible Families reveals experiences within black American and Caribbean communities as it asks how people with multiple stigmatized identities imagine and construct an individual and collective sense of self.

From the Inside Flap
"Mignon Moore’s title says it all: Invisible Families. Scholarship on lesbian and gay issues has been slow to recognize the importance of children and family among those in same-sex relationships and has paid scant attention to racial minorities; nor have students of African American life given much attention to Black lesbians and gay men. We are left with the unfortunate impression, to paraphrase the authors of But Some of Us Are Brave, that all the lesbians and gays are White and all the Blacks are heterosexual. This book stands as a significant corrective to these multiple myopias, offering a nuanced account of the kinds of pressures Black women raising children with female partners encounter, and revealing the creativity and resilience they bring to the struggle." --Ellen Lewin, University of Iowa, author of Gay Fatherhood: Narratives of Family and Citizenship in America.

“Invisible Families shakes up longstanding theoretical conceptualizations of racial identity, family formation, and motherhood, contesting basic assumptions about black families. Tightly conceptualized and highly engaging.” – Kerry Ann Rockquemore, author of Raising Biracial Children

About the Author

Black Lesbian Families
By Jeffery Mingo
Black lesbians are triple minorities and they may face things that white lesbians, Black gay men, or straight people of any race may not. In this study, the author posits that most studies of lesbian families focus on middle-class white lesbians and posits that maybe families of color may be different. Thus, she contrasts the subject families to straight couple-headed families and white lesbian-headed ones.
This book has a certain Afrocentricity that I like. For the most part, the lesbians here are Black women who love Black women and who intensely want their Black children to be active members in the Black community. There's no "post-racial" or "non-racial" nothing here. In fact, while the women here may question sexual orientation labels, they are resolute that they are Black and they are women. The thing is: the women studied here are New Yorkers. NYC has enough Black gay men and lesbians that they can afford to stick with their own. Black gay people who live in places where they may see no other face like their own in gay social circles might not relate to this.
I can almost put identity issues to the side to bring up one important feature of this book. THIS WAS A WEEEEELLL-FUNDED STUDY!!!! Plenty of studies of gay people are catch-as-catch-can. They use snowball techniques. The samples are never more than 20 or so. This interviewer spoke with about 60 subjects. She teaches on the West Coast, but has the funds to do work on the East Coast. She had graduate students assisting her, etc. Rarely do you see a study of gay people, maybe especially gay women, with this much financial backing for it! But please remember this is an academic book. I could not just hand this to lesbian everyday readers. I mean it's not as heavy and complicated as Judith Butler, but it's not a walk in the park like "This Bridge Called My Back" or "Sister Outsider." That's great in a way because this sociologist's study can stand up to any of her straight, white, male peers. It's written like many a sociology text, but some people never went to college and this may be a bit too high-level for them.
In lost of middle-class lesbian circles, heterogender couples are frowned upon. But let's face, in many a lesbian couple, one partner is markedly more feminine than the other. Although the term "butch-femme" rarely comes up, that dynamic is presented a lot. The author prefers the term "less feminine" over "butch." She also avoids dichotomies and uses a middle term "gender blender." Still, in this study of life that is real-world rather than utopic, interviewees admitted that if they liked one type of woman, they knew the only way to get with her was to have the opposite gender expression of hers. I flipped through the bibliography and may have seen selections from "The Persistent Desire: A Butch-Femme Reader" often. If you hate butch-femme, then this book won't be for your test. However, if you just love you some butch-femme, then here it is in droves.
In short, I liked this book. I would recommend for Black lesbians considering parenting, but you may have to be a college-level reader to understand it.

Down by the Bay: San Francisco's History between the Tides, by Matthew Morse Booker

San Francisco Bay is the largest and most productive estuary on the Pacific Coast of North America. It is also home to the oldest and densest urban settlements in the American West. Focusing on human inhabitation of the Bay since Ohlone times, Down by the Bay reveals the ongoing role of nature in shaping that history. From birds to oyster pirates, from gold miners to farmers, from salt ponds to ports, this is the first history of the San Francisco Bay and Delta as both a human and natural landscape. It offers invaluable context for current discussions over the best management and use of the Bay in the face of sea level rise.

Review
"Booker gives the city a fresh face; the familiar becomes strange and wonderful. . . . "Down by the Bay" is a genuine pearl in the sea of contemporary environmental writing."--Jonah Raskin"San Francisco Chronicle" (06/23/2013)

"The history of San Francisco is not only the story of a great world city, it's also the story of a great body of water that both supported and was impacted by rapid urban growth. In his natural (and human) history of San Francisco Bay, author Matthew Morse Booker focuses on waterfront and tidal wetlands. It is there that decades of human activity, such as dredging and upriver hydraulic mining, have reshaped, polluted and irrevocably altered the marine environment."--Pete Basofin"Sacramento Bee" (07/12/2013)

From the Inside Flap
“San Francisco Bay is the largest estuary on the Pacific coast of North America. Along with the adjoining delta formed by the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers, it also forms the solar plexus of California's complex, fragile plumbing system. In this incisive and original work, Matthew Booker vividly recounts the successive waves of interaction between people and place that have molded--and imperiled--the modern Bay. This is rich, cutting-edge environmental history at its best, and a compelling read, too.” —David M. Kennedy, author of Freedom from Fear: The American People in Depression and War, 1929-1945

"...A thorough and highly engaging account of the use and development of the Bay shoreline and intertidal zone, a region often understudied by cultural and ecological historians. This ecologically grounded narrative is an important contribution to our understanding of the development trajectory of the region."—Robin Grossinger, Senior Scientist, San Francisco Estuary Institute

“I see San Francisco Bay from my house everyday, but I no longer look at it in the same way. Matthew Booker’s Down by the Bay is one of those books that transforms the familiar. He writes lucidly and eloquently about a forgotten past and an often hidden landscape that, once recognized, traces a possible future.” —Richard White, author of The Middle Ground: Indians Empires and Republics in the Great Lakes Region

About the Author
Matthew Morse Booker is Associate Professor of History at North Carolina State University. He was previously Visiting Assistant Professor at Stanford and leads the Between the Tides project at Stanford’s Spatial History Lab, mapping San Francisco Bay's dynamic tidal margin.

Nicely written; valuable content
By W. Tuohy
I spent some years employed on a government project planning future management of the San Francisco Estuary, and more years as board member for a non-profit organization promoting public education in this arena. These roles exposed me to publications, studies, etc., and interest groups seeking to intervene in Estuary management (San Francisco, San Pablo, and Suisun Bays, and the Sacramento River/San Joaquin River Delta). Booker reports information that I have seen before, plus much more that is new to me. His synthesis is excellent, and in-depth treatment of shoreline activities takes me to new ground.

In clear language accessible to the general reader the author relates stories and data taken from regional history, and describes critical aspects of our local ecology - focusing on activities along shorelines and inter-tidal zones. He examines four critical interfaces between humans and ecology: the San Francisco waterfront (from mudflats to "real estate"), Delta farm lands (ecology and politics of "reclamation"), oyster beds in SF Bay (from communal resource to private property), and tidal lands bordering the southern edges of SF Bay (conversion to salt ponds then refuges). One central concern is property ownership, how development interests have used laws and the political process to achieve control for their economic purposes.

Booker describes physical, economic, and legal changes. Equally important, he provides cultural history - reports on what people were thinking and feeling about the bays and Delta. And coming from an independent historian - not a committee or bureaucratic organization - this book is less constrained by various constituencies whom the author(s) dare not displease. Though narrower in scope, Down by the Bay is reminiscent of Marc Reisner's marvelous book, Cadillac Desert.

Booker's narratives are well presented, entertaining, and address important concerns. They are a useful entrée into human ecology and the plethora of policy issues confronting the Estuary, whose lands and waters cover 1600 square miles, with 13 million inhabitants scattered over 12 counties and "organized" (an oxymoron) into countless local, special district, state, and federal jurisdictions.
