The Monster Within: The Hidden Side of Motherhood, by Barbara Almond

Mixed feelings about motherhood—uncertainty over having a child, fears of pregnancy and childbirth, or negative thoughts about one’s own children—are not just hard to discuss, they are a powerful social taboo. In this beautifully written book, Barbara Almond brings this troubling issue to light. She uncovers the roots of ambivalence, tells how it manifests in lives of women and their children, and describes a spectrum of maternal behavior—from normal feelings to highly disturbed mothering. In a society where perfection in parenting is the unattainable ideal, this compassionate book also shows how women can affect positive change in their lives.

Review
“Just the thing for a gray and drizzly autumn afternoon. Drawing on her thirty-seven years of practice as a psychoanalyst as well as her own experiences as a mother, Almond leads an adventurous tour through the shadowy, secret parts of the mother’s psyche. . . An oddly compelling read.” (New Yorker 2010-10-06)

“Myth-shredding look at maternal ambivalence.” (Ms Magazine 2010-10-15)

“First, let me recommend this engrossing study to every new mother, old mother, good mother and bad mother. Sons, husbands, dads and lovers might profit from reading this, too. ‘The Monster Within’ addresses what everybody knows, but almost nobody talks about: Even the best mothers among us will be or have been tormented from time to time by strong feelings of dread, fear, hatred and even revulsion at the whole process of motherhood, as well as experiencing downright murderous feelings toward our children.” (Carolyn See Washington Post Book World 2010-10-22)

“A smart, cohesive read, and a welcome respite from perfect-mother guidebooks. Recommended If: The last book you’d ever pick up is one about motherhood.” (Bitch 2011-04-01)

“Takes on the taboo of maternal ambivalence. . . . Almond, a psychoanalyst, offers an optimistic message about the roots of these mixed emotions.” (The Washington Post 2011-12-28)

From the Inside Flap
"Psychoanalysis has always addressed the monster within: conflicts, fears, and those unacceptable feelings of anger, envy, and hatred with which we all grapple. Such feelings are particularly scary for mothers, and Dr. Barbara Almond, an experienced psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, shows us how and why this is so. The Monster Within presents richly nuanced and detailed cases that give the reader a sense of what these difficult feelings of ambivalence are, as they are experienced day to day, consciously and unconsciously. Her expertly presented material provides the lively underpinning of this compelling book."—Nancy J. Chodorow, author of The Reproduction of Mothering

"The Monster Within is a gripping book. Dr. Almond's fresh insights and perspectives regarding maternal ambivalence help us to become more comfortable with these feelings. This book is enormously useful to mothers, clinicians and anyone else interested in the psychology of motherhood."—Daphne de Marneffe, author of Maternal Desire: On Children, Love, and the Inner Life

"Barbara Almond's book is a wonderful new resource for helping mothers, especially new mothers, to tolerate that love between them and their children must be burdened by resentment. Her evocative clinical and literary stories make ambivalence a bit easier for mothers to bear. This is essential reading for mothers, in psychotherapy or not, for fathers, and for therapists, including male therapists who will become better able to see women's bodies and motherhood from a woman's perspective."—Stanley Coen, M.D., author of Affect Intolerance in Patient and Analyst

Never too late!
By violet
Barbara Almond's wonderful phrase "the ubiquity of maternal ambivalence" was a great insight for me as I read, and looked back on my own years of motherhood. At times it seemed there would never be a time without small children needing everything! As much as I reveled in pregnancy, nursing, and all the small joys of raising children, I am sure I must have often felt confused and even embarrassed by the mixed feelings I had at time. Looking back, I realize I was lucky enough to have a wide circle of older friends, fellow day-care parents, and a husband who could take almost anything with a grain of salt, and a good dose of humor.

But here's where the surprise lay. When I was about to become a grandmother, I was startled when I discovered how strong my ambivalence was. Friends and colleagues were gushing with excitement, while I felt as though I had barely escaped the long years of motherhood - why all the glorification? So reading this book felt like graduating into adulthood, no matter how belated. It was illuminating to read how natural the mixed feelings are. I highly recommend this book to women at any stage of life, and to the bewildered men in their lives who are often left on the sidelines observing the raw biology of new motherhood, not realizing they are watching the evolution of a new self, messy but amazingly creative. Hats off to the author for a real triumph of integration: literature, case history, and vignettes of contemporary society. Her compassion and honesty make this very tough subject a good read. Highly recommended.

Compassion for the dark sides of motherhood
By Kaeli Vandertulip
Ambivalence is the ability to hold two completely contrasting emotions about an object or person at the same time. Almond writes in detail about a specific type of ambivalence--maternal ambivalence--in which mothers or mothers-to-be can both love and hate, fear and fetishize, or disdain and desire children. Rather than say this is unique to "bad mothers," Almond disects and demonstrates the ways that all women have this form of ambivalence. She shows the good and the bad of maternal ambivalence, from motherlove and self-sacrifice to child murderers and narcissistic mothers. She uses examples from her own clinical experience and literature.

It seems appropriate that my feelings about this book are mixed. One the one hand, I appreciated her discussion of a topic that is all to often ignored, especially by women. She does an excellent job of showing how being a perfect mother is disasterous to mother and child, extoles the "good enough mother" and explains the emotions that women often try very hard to ignore and deny. I appreciated her use of literature, not because I thought she had a great understanding of the literature, but because the characters she chooses to personify these feelings are much more fleshed out than her human case studies who are probably too embarassed to be as honest as an author hiding behind his or her characters. On the other hand, her use of psychoanalysis to explain much of this condition got downright annoying. She focuses so much on early childhood (infancy and toddlerhood) and incest issues (the dreaded Oedipal complex) that she took away from her own thesis--that maternal ambivalence is normal and can be seen in wonderful, terrible, or mediocre mothers. Also, while her writing was technically excellent, she often went an entire chapter without saying much of anything. Her chapter on the ambivalence felt by the mothers of special needs children was especially disappointing and, while she brushed the surface of it, she always stopped short of saying anything useful about the ambivalence of step-mothers.

In general, as an introduction to the notion of maternal ambivalence, this is an excellent resource. It is clear that this is a field that bears much more research and I appreciated seeing something approaching scholarly consideration of the topic. There are plenty of books in the popular press about this topic (Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, Parenting Out of Control, Perfect Madness), but very few delve into the actual mind of mothers. This helps pave the way for more serious looks at a universal and important topic.

Compassion for the trials of mothering
By Cyg
Enriching and engaging. This wonderfully written book will help mothers, fathers, and therapists better appreciate and cope with the mix of positive and negative feelings which develop in the work of mothering. It shines a compassionate light on the difficult feelings mothers have in order to counter shame and isolation and foster thought and conversation about how best to manage in difficult circumstances.

I enjoyed the book more than I expected from the title which exaggerates the negatives examined in the book. The writing is so fluid it eases the reader into absorption, reminding me of the best literature courses I've taken where fiction is used to illustrate the trials and wonders of being human. After reading this I'm inspired to reread some of the classics referred to and finally get to some I've never read. And, you can browse this book easily as well as keep it on your shelf for reference when particular mothering dilemmas beg for deeper consideration.

Jazz Diasporas: Race, Music, and Migration in Post-World War II Paris (Music of the African Diaspora), by Rashida K. Braggs

At the close of the Second World War, waves of African American musicians migrated to Paris, eager to thrive in its reinvigorated jazz scene. Jazz Diasporas challenges the notion that Paris was a color-blind paradise for African Americans. On the contrary, musicians adopted a variety of strategies to cope with the cultural and social assumptions that confronted them throughout their careers in Paris, particularly as France became embroiled in struggles over race and identity when colonial conflicts like the Algerian War escalated. Using case studies of prominent musicians and thoughtful analysis of interviews, music, film, and literature, Rashida K. Braggs investigates the impact of this postwar musical migration. She examines key figures including musicians Sidney Bechet, Inez Cavanaugh, and Kenny Clarke and writer and social critic James Baldwin to show how they performed both as artists and as African Americans. Their collaborations with French musicians and critics complicated racial and cultural understandings of who could represent “authentic” jazz and created spaces for shifting racial and national identities—what Braggs terms “jazz diasporas.”

Review
"A fascinating look into an important chapter in cultural history." (Kirkus Reviews 2015-11-05)

"Un libro apasionante, bien documentado y básico para entender la migración de músicos afroamericanos de jazz a Europa." ("A fascinating book, well documented and fundamental to understand the migration of African American jazz musicians to Europe.") (Tango Reporter 2016-04-01)

From the Inside Flap
"In Jazz Diasporas, Rashida K. Braggs explores the creative tensions inherent in jazz as both African American and global music, between the particular and the universal. In doing so she gives us a noble and insightful portrait of black expatriate Paris in the decades after World War II."—Tyler Stovall, University of California, Santa Cruz, author of Paris Noir: African Americans in the City of Light

"Heartfelt, rhythmic, fluid, and eloquent. Rashida K. Braggs takes us on a fascinating journey through the diaspora that jazz built, a journey you will not want to miss. You’ll know how I feel, and I’m feeling good!”—Trica Danielle Keaton, coeditor of Black Europe and the African Diaspora

"The story of jazz in France is not simply a story of the generations of expatriate musicians who found welcoming audiences in Paris. Nor is it solely a matter of the ways the French heard jazz as a paradigm of modernity and learned to play it in their own way. Instead, as Rashida K. Braggs demonstrates in this groundbreaking cultural history, jazz has been crucial above all because of the new kinds of social scenes it made possible when it 'migrated' across the Atlantic. With suggestive reconsiderations of pantheon figures (Bechet, Baldwin) as well as revelatory interpretations of some deserving of wider recognition (above all, the singer and club owner Inez Cavanaugh), Jazz Diasporas is a major contribution."—Brent Hayes Edwards, Professor of English and Comparative Literature and Jazz Studies at Columbia University, author of The Practice of Diaspora: Literature, Translation, and the Rise of Black Internationalism

"With enticing ethnographic details and a distinctive historicization of Parisian jazz, Rashida K. Braggs positions Paris as a vital site for the development of 'Black jazz' and adroitly exposes the myth of Paris as a racial paradise for African American musicians living exilic lives. By relating the stories of African Americans with white French, the analysis of film with literature, and the postwar era with today, Braggs leaves us with a colorfully interwoven and productively complex image of jazz and the experiences it embodies when it migrates. This exceptional, comprehensive work clearly illustrates Braggs’s innovative and valuable conceptualization of 'jazz diasporas' as spaces that trouble national, racial, and artistic boundaries."—Omi Osun Joni L. Jones, University of Texas at Austin, author of Theatrical Jazz: Performance, Àse, and the Power of the Present Moment

Wetland Habitats of North America: Ecology and Conservation ConcernsFrom University of California Press

Wetlands are prominent landscapes throughout North America. The general characteristics of wetlands are controversial, thus there has not been a systematic assessment of different types of wetlands in different parts of North America, or a compendium of the threats to their conservation. Wetland Habitats of North America adopts a geographic and habitat approach, in which experts familiar with wetlands from across North America provide analyses and syntheses of their particular region of study. Addressing a broad audience of students, scientists, engineers, environmental managers, and policy makers, this book reviews recent, scientifically rigorous literature directly relevant to understanding, managing, protecting, and restoring wetland ecosystems of North America.

From the Inside Flap
“Wetland Habitats of North America is essential reading for everyone who studies, manages, or visits North American wetlands. It fills an important void in the wetland literature, providing accessible and succinct descriptions of all of the continent’s major wetland types.”

Arnold van der Valk, Iowa State University

“Batzer and Baldwin have compiled the most comprehensive compendium of North American wetland habitats and their ecology that is presently available—a must for wetland scientists and managers.”

Irving A. Mendelssohn, Louisiana State University

"If you want to gain a broad understanding of the ecology of North America’s diverse wetlands, Wetland Habitats of North America is the book for you. Darold Batzer and Andrew Baldwin have assembled an impressive group of regional wetland scientists who have produced a virtual encyclopedia to the continent’s wetlands. Reading the book is like a road trip across the Americas with guided tours of major wetland types by local experts. Your first stop will be to coastal wetlands with eight chapters covering tidal wetlands along the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts. Then you’ll travel inland where you can visit any or all of 18 types ranging from bottomland swamps of the Southeast to pothole marshes of the Northern Prairies to montane wetlands of the Rockies to tropical swamps of Central America and desert springs wetlands. All in one book—I’m impressed! Every wetlander should add this book to her or his swampland library.

The real-life story of Dr. Alfredo Qui ones-Hinojosa is so amazing and seemingly unbelievable that your first reaction is to think it's a Hollywood movie script. . . . But it's true. --Luis Torres"Sgvtribune" (06/21/2012)"

From the Inside Flap
“This is a spell-binding story of a champion who harnessed the power of passion and dogged determination to triumph over adversity. Be prepared to laugh, cry and to come away enlightened not just about the human brain and its miraculous capacities but also about the human heart.” —Venus Williams, author of Come to Win

"Ever since I first heard Dr. Q’s story, my main question was: how does a migrant farm worker with no money and no English overcome the odds and pursue his aspirations at the highest levels of the medical field? Wow—not only is it the stuff of which fairy tales and Hollywood movies are made, but it’s also much needed prescription for the soul.” —Chris Gardner, author of The Pursuit of Happyness

“When I first met Dr. Q, I thought he had an angel watching out for him—defying death more than once and overcoming the odds of class and racial discrimination. After reading his truly inspirational memoir, I can say that Dr. Q doesn’t have an angel. He is simply one of us—a human being who chooses to believe in the capacity of people. And now, every time I see an ‘invisible’ undocumented immigrant, I see a potential brain surgeon. This is a book about humility, being a dreamer and the power of esperanza—hope.” —Maria Hinojosa, award-winning NPR/PBS anchor and author of Raising Raul and Crews

"Becoming Dr. Q is a book that should be read by all highschoolers and college students--it's about how to overcome hardship, about how to believe in our heart's hope, about not allowing your dreams to be co-opted by mediocrity. This should be a handbook for never giving up on your dreams, and if followed, the world would become a greater place for peace, respect and love. Read it—laugh, cry, share in Dr. Q's magnificent journey!" —Jimmy Santiago Baca, author of A Glass of Water

“Becoming Dr. Q is a gem of a book—an amazing journey of a young man who entered the United States at age 19 as a non-documented migrant farm worker. Through brilliance and hard work, he gained entry to the top-rated Harvard Medical School. Now at Johns Hopkins, he is recognized as a world-renowned neurosurgeon. It was a pleasure to know Alfredo when he was a trailblazing student at Harvard. Everyone who reads this book will be enriched by his inspiring story.” —Alvin F. Poussaint, MD, Harvard Medical School

“The life of Dr. Q is a testament to the power of poverty to motivate social ascent, of intellectual prowess to scale academia’s heights, and to the power of altruism to give back through the most highly developed medical treatment and creation of new knowledge, through mentoring the next generation, and through his own unique family.” —Joe L. Martinez, Jr., Professor Emeritus, UC Berkeley

“Quite simply, Dr. Q is a hero to many people in the Hispanic community. He went from the farm fields in California to the most advanced operating rooms in the country. He earned $3.35 an hour cultivating tomatoes and chili peppers in the San Joaquin Valley. What makes his journey unique is that the same hands that picked vegetables are now touch the brains of his patients and saving lives. He did, in just one life, what usually takes two or three generations. I can’t think of a better example of what an immigrant with ambition and dedication can do in this great country of opportunities. He is, no doubt, a real hero.” —Jorge Ramos, Senior News Anchor, Univision News

“This is the most amazing success story you’ll ever read. Be it fiction or non-fiction, there is not another book out there that competes with the rags to stitches tale of Dr. Q. If you are an illegal, Mexican, migrant farmer, it’s hard enough to make it from paycheck to paycheck in America, let alone from paycheck to crew supervisor to community college to medical school to brain surgeon. Really, the only thing more amazing than how far he has come, is how far he is likely to go. Who better to find a cure for cancer than a man who knows no obstacles? If I were an immigrant to this country looking to find my way, or a young person looking for motivation, or anyone looking for inspiration, this book would become my bible.” —Steve Hartman, CBS News correspondent

“I used to think that Superman was an American who went by the name Clark Kent. Now I know that he is a Mexican-American who goes by the name Dr Q. Read it to believe it.” —Katrina Firlik, MD, author Another Day in the Frontal Lobe: A Brain Surgeon Exposes Life on the Inside

“Even as a little kid, Dr. Q dreamed really big dreams, and no matter what the obstacles, he never gave up. I know firsthand that if you don’t dream it, you can’t become it. Now as a man, not only has he become it, but even more importantly, he is helping others to realize their dreams. Young people around the world will identify with and be motivated by Dr. Q’s story. This book is a slam dunk! Rock on, Dr. Q! Rock on!” —Jason McElwain, author of The Game of My Life

“This is a poignant and timely story that needs to be told. Dr. Q is a heroic and resilient man, whose odyssey should make it more difficult for pundits and others to demonize immigrants from Mexico and Central America. He goes far beyond his obvious technical abilities as a surgeon and demonstrates what an exemplary human being he is—modest, intelligent, and compassionate.”

—Paul R. Linde, MD, author of Danger to Self: On the Front Line with an ER Psychiatrist

The Wonderful Dr. Q .. A true story
By Amazon Customer
How wonderful it was to read such an awe inspiring life story written by such an amazing person. Dr. Q reminds me of the meek lamb who turned into the ferocious lion, while at the same time being as cuddly as a kitten because of the way he treats everyone around him. I have come to know him in a way that I never knew was possible. And that was just from reading the first 2 chapters! I now understand why he treats all of his patients in the manner that he does and why he has such empathy for everyone.

I came to know Dr. Alfredo-Quinones-Hinojosa a/k/a/ Dr. Q on February 3, 2009 after finding out that I had a brain tumor late December of 2008. When Dr. Q walked into the room there was a bright light emanating from him that assured both me and my husband that we had found the right Doctor for us to have managed my care. He not only reassured me that he would do his best to help me, but he also assured my husband that he would help us both by doing the best he could.

Just like his fierce determination to come to the United States to find a better life for not only himself, but for his whole family, Dr. Q has made his life's goal to find a cure for the abominable disease known as Brain Cancer just as vehement.

It has been both an honor and a pleasure to be associated with a doctor whose fervent goal is not only the eradication of brain cancer, but the high demand he makes of himself not only to be a good doctor, but a magnificent person in general. Dr. Q takes this journey of his life above and beyond the likes of anyone else you will ever know. Read his story to find out why we patients love him so much! I am now, more than ever more adamant about my ability to do what I can to help him in his cause.

Dr.Q and the meaning of life
By Occam's safety razor
I am biased I suppose. I have the mis-fortune and great good fortune to know Dr.Q as a family member of a patient. The story of his rise to the pinnacle of neuro-surgery and research into brain cancer is astounding. If you know Q every word rings true once you meet him. It is there is plain sight. He lives his values. Dr. Q will tell you that he is a product of many events and people including his family both as a child and as a husband, his mentors, his co-workers and team, and at the center of everything his patients. Always his patients. This is a man of rare determination, brilliance and compassion.

For an illegal immigrant who gained his citizenship through an amnesty program of President Reagan's to achieve what he achieved by age 40 defies belief.

This can be read from many different points of view. One is the importance of an opportunity and what this country can gain when people have an opportunity. Today Dr.Q provides invaluable research into the causes of brain cancer;saves lives with his surgical skill; provides meaningful employment for dozens of people and generates millions of dollars in revenue for his work. He is a remarkable man. You should take the opportunity to meet him.

I Thank God Daily that Alfredo Jumped Twice...
By Sherwood B. Kressley
You see...if Alfredo had not "Jumped Twice' there would be no Dr. Q. as we know of.

I just finished reading this much anticipated autobiography. On the surface 'BECOMING DR. Q.' is a Very Interesting Book about how an energetic, strong-willed young fellow from Mexico became the admired, energetic, and respected Dr. Q. at Johns Hopkins. The truth is... he followed his calling.

Alfredo did what all of us should do...listen. Not the divide between two great countries could stop him. He listened to God's calling and he acted upon his words!!! I know this for a fact...and I'll briefly explain. My wife and I first met Dr. Q. in 2008 when the door opened to our examination room at Johns Hopkins. We were both scared to death as I needed a brain tumor removed ASAP. I had a terrible headache, my vision was blurred, and we had just driven 250 miles for the appointment. Oh, and Quinones...how did the nurse pronounce his name??? I felt embarrassed too. I forgot his name right before the door opened.

He shook our hands. "Mr. Kressley, and you must be the beautiful Mrs. Kressley" he said." I am Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa but you can call me Dr. Q." At that moment words can not even explain the peace he brought to us. At that moment I knew he was the surgeon for me. God told me.

We all hugged each other after our meeting and do so to this day. I always wondered how he became a doctor in the United States. Now I know.

I read the book slowly because I didn't want it to end. I recommend it to everyone. It is such a Wonderful Feel-Good Story!

Review
From the Review of Previous Volumes:

"...one of the important books of the year....all are sure to agree that Wallerstein has written a most impressive book."
THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

"This is an exciting and highly intelligent book...Wallerstein has produced a splendid stimulant to our historical imagingation, and deserves a wide readership."
HISTORY

From the Inside Flap
"A work in the grand historical tradition...bold in its thrust....many readers will find this a contentious and unsettling work. But it is contentious and unsettling in ways healthful for the normal practice of economic history."

—William Darity, Jr., Journal of Economic History

"Wallerstein's work is one of those rare examples of an intellectual project that transforms the scholarly map. That anthropology, sociology, history, and political science in their present forms cannot be discussed without reference to the project remains Wallerstein's greatest achievement."

—William Roseberry, American Anthropologist

"From the first page we are engaged by a formidable intellect and relentless researcher. He is someone to take very seriously on details as well as on the generality. He has a strong sense of international interconnectedness (which he virtually invented in our era)....Compared to the provincialism of so many historians, Wallerstein's breadth of vision is compellingly appropriate."

—Michael Mann, Contemporary Sociology

About the Author
Immanuel Wallerstein is Senior Research Scholar at Yale University and the former President of the International Sociological Association. He is the author of many books, including, most recently, World-Systems Analysis: An Introduction and European Universalism: The Rhetoric of Power.

What they should have taught us in high school.
By Eli Kent
Immanuel Wallerstein has given us an important book. This book explains how and why Great Britain emerged from the 18th century with economic hegemony. The best thing which the book does is to place free-market capitalism as a historical process, rather than as an extra-historical inevitability, which is usually taught in most public schools, and assumed in most public debates and private understandings of economics in the U.S.
Do not be scared away by the book's academic-sounding title. The book is accessible. Wallerstein writes in a lucid manner, but is treating a complex topic, and he seems to be writing mostly for academics. Basically, reading this book should be a challange for the average reader (like me), but a rewarding and seriously educating challange in the end. The reading is slow, but worthwhile.
I would lastly add that education of this sort, especially after one is through with school, is the duty of every citizen of a democracy. Knowledge is the foundation for power.

cool book
By Stephen Thompson
This book, the third volume of Immanuel Wallerstein's Modern World-System series, deals with the period from around 1730 to 1840-- in which independence movements decolonized most of North and South America, the French revolution occurred, and Britain underwent the so-called first industrial revolution. Because of these events, the period from 1730 to 1840 is widely seen as a turning point in world history. The conventional interpretation seems to be that, during this period, humanity finally broke decisively with the old feudal system and laid the foundations for a new system based on individual rights, limited government authority, free-ish trade, and rapid (if uneven) industrial development. If you've read volumes I and II of The Modern World-System, then you know that Wallerstein disagrees with this conventional interpretation of history. Thus, in this volume Wallerstein argues that the events of 1730 to 1840 were part of a process set in motion by much more radical changes which occurred around the sixteenth century. Hence, it is argued, the events covered in vol. III signaled an expansion and consolidation of the world capitalist system, rather than the birth of that system.

This distinction might seem like academic nitpicking, but the implications of Wallerstein's arguments are fairly earth-shattering and should be of interest to everyone. Compared with the high-school textbook version of history, Wallerstein provides a radically different view of how economic development occurs. And as a sort of corollary, the book forces us to rethink who gained and who did not gain as a result of the development and expansion of the modern world-system. Additionally, and maybe most importantly, Wallerstein implicitly offers us a very compelling reinterpretation of how the world works today.

The book moves at a very brisk pace, with a lot of ideas coming together into one complex argument, and I think it would be hard for me to write a summary which didn't go on for at least a dozen pages. So, instead, I will describe a couple of main propositions which Wallerstein grinds out in the course of his larger argument.

To start with, one of the main causes of Great Britain's dominant position in the world economy was its strong government. There are several reasons for this. First, Britain's fearsome military allowed it to direct international trade in a way which facilitated rapid export-led growth. Second, domestically, Britain's strong government was able to contain inter- and intra-class conflict more effectively than France's. Third, (although this is discussed in more in vol. II than vol. III) the British state's ability to effectively collect taxes both funded its activities and, perhaps just as importantly, provided for a relatively stable government financial situation, which provided a solid foundation for the financial system as a whole.

A second major contention of the book is that when a region was incorporated into the world-system, this was generally disastrous for the people who lived in that region and happened against their will. Incorporation tended to involve a decline in the living standards (as well as the amount of personal freedom) for the people who lived in the area being incorporated, as well as a process of deindustrialization. The ways in which this process worked itself out during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries seems to have played a decisive role in determining the distribution of wealth and power in the world today.

This is just a taste of what is in the book. The book is difficult, but clearly written and carefully argued. It's also not quite as difficult as the first two volumes, in my opinion. I highly recommend it. But make sure you understand volumes I and II before you try to read it -- I think that otherwise, a lot of the important points will be difficult to understand.

Spaces of Conflict, Sounds of Solidarity: Music, Race, and Spatial Entitlement in Los Angeles, by Gaye Theresa Johnson

In Spaces of Conflict, Sounds of Solidarity, Gaye Theresa Johnson examines interracial anti-racist alliances, divisions among aggrieved minority communities, and the cultural expressions and spatial politics that emerge from the mutual struggles of Blacks and Chicanos in Los Angeles from the 1940s to the present. Johnson argues that struggles waged in response to institutional and social repression have created both moments and movements in which Blacks and Chicanos have unmasked power imbalances, sought recognition, and forged solidarities by embracing the strategies, cultures, and politics of each others' experiences. At the center of this study is the theory of spatial entitlement: the spatial strategies and vernaculars utilized by working class youth to resist the demarcations of race and class that emerged in the postwar era. In this important new book, Johnson reveals how racial alliances and antagonisms between Blacks and Chicanos in L.A. had spatial as well as racial dimensions.

Review
"Magnificently written and researched . . . lays fertile ground for future scholarship by offering a rich and nuanced account of the shared struggles and victories of Black and Brown communities in Los Angeles." (American Studies Journal 2015-01-01)

From the Inside Flap
“Johnson's book illustrates how sonic affinities between black and brown provide a way of thinking about urban race relations that transcends the limited categories of conflict and cooperation.” —Daniel Widener, author of Black Arts West: Culture and Struggle in Black Los Angeles, 1942-1992

“From record stores to radio, from East L.A. punk to South Central hip hop, Johnson puts her ear to the post-WWII city and in a lucid, impassioned voice tells us what she hears: invaluable stories of struggle, conflict, and alliance that continue to shape the political stakes of the contemporary moment.” —Josh Kun, author of Audiotopia: Music, Race, and America

"Gaye Theresa Johnson had to ignore all the noise about black-brown conflict, seek out archives that were never supposed to be found, and develop new ways of seeing and hearing. In so doing, she has produced a truly magnificent account of the world African Americans and Chicano/as made together—a world of sound, style, and subversion that serves as both a window into social crises and a vision for social change."—Robin D. G. Kelley, author of Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original

"Beautifully written, Spaces of Conflict, Sounds of Solidarity offers us a new and imaginative way of thinking about relations between Chicanas/os and African Americans. With her concept of "spatial entitlement," Johnson shows us the many ways, including those we cannot see, in which Black and Brown communities forged solidarities."—Laura Pulido, Professor of American Studies & Ethnicity, University of Southern California

America's Social Arsonist: Fred Ross and Grassroots Organizing in the Twentieth Century, by Gabriel Thompson

"A good organizer is a social arsonist who goes around setting people on fire."—Fred Ross

Raised by conservative parents who hoped he would “stay with his own kind,” Fred Ross instead became one of the most influential community organizers in American history. His activism began alongside Dust Bowl migrants, where he managed the same labor camp that inspired John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. During World War II, Ross worked for the release of interned Japanese Americans, and after the war, he dedicated his life to building the political power of Latinos across California. Labor organizing in this country was forever changed when Ross knocked on the door of a young Cesar Chavez and encouraged him to become an organizer.

Until now there has been no biography of Fred Ross, a man who believed a good organizer was supposed to fade into the crowd as others stepped forward. In America’s Social Arsonist, Gabriel Thompson provides a full picture of this complicated and driven man, recovering a forgotten chapter of American history and providing vital lessons for organizers today.

Review
"Those who know the name Fred Ross probably identify him as 'the man who taught Cesar Chavez how to organize, ' as he was once dubbed by The Chronicle. Most Californians probably have never heard of him. Gabriel Thompson s superb new biography of Ross, 'America s Social Arsonist: Fred Ross and Grassroots Organizing in the Twentieth Century, ' will be fascinating for both groups. The author sheds new light on the life of a man whose presence was behind the scenes but whose work ended up in the headlines. . . . Thompson has plumbed Ross extensive notes and files to relay vivid accounts of his experiences and insight into his ideas. During his half century as an organizer, Ross pioneered tactics that are widely used today. 'But, ' asserts Thompson, 'his greatest legacy is in the people he inspired and mentored who went on to shape California and U.S. history.'"--Elaine Elinson"San Francisco Chronicle" (03/24/2016)"

"Gabriel Thompson has produced amasterful and engaging bookabout a premier American organizer, Fred Ross Sr. . . .This fine book is many things useful, moving, and sad. It highlights the creative innovations and the painful lessons of an organizer who spent his career behind the scenes, but who is getting, at long last, the attention he richly deserves."--Michael Gecan"Labor's Edge" (04/05/2016)"

"One of the most profound meetings in San Jose history occurred on the evening of June 9, 1952, when a wiry community organizer named Fred Ross knocked on the door of 25-year-old Cesar Chavez and asked him to become a leader of his people. . . . Until recently, Ross has been seen as the less prominent partner in that meeting. He generally avoided the limelight before his death in 1992. But now a new book, 'America's Social Arsonist, ' by Oakland-based writer Gabriel Thompson, recounts Ross' career and his huge impact."--Scott Herhold"San Jose Mercury News" (04/23/2016)

"This is an absolutely must-read book for organizers, those interested in organizing, and those interested in how to achieve progressive social change. It is also perfect for book groups, inspiring discussions sure to go far into the night."--Randy Shaw"Social Policy" (04/01/2016)

From the Inside Flap
“Without Fred Ross, there would have been no Cesar Chavez. With careful research and deft prose, Gabriel Thompson has brought to life a seminal figure whose legacy continues to resonate in social movements across the country. America’s Social Arsonist is the best kind of history—an engrossing, thought-provoking story with great relevance for anyone who cares about community organizing and social change.”—Miriam Pawel, Pulitzer Prize winner and author of The Crusades of Cesar Chavez: A Biography

“Fred Ross Sr. was one of America’s leading labor organizers and educators, dedicating his life to lifting the voices and earnings of the oppressed. Here’s a superb biography and introduction to Ross’s life, thoughts, teachings, and techniques—as applicable for America today as they were when he was alive and kicking.”—Robert B. Reich, Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley, and former U.S. Secretary of Labor

“Fred Ross was a quiet leader who inspired greatness in those he met and worked with. He had real insight and knew how to move people to action. Cesar Chavez himself got his first organizing instructions from Fred Ross.”—Jerry Brown, thirty-ninth governor of California

“A compulsive read, full of keen social insights, sage historical judgments, and a telling narrative of a man who sacrificed family for the good fight. By rescuing Ross from obscurity, Thompson offers twenty-first-century social arsonists essential lessons that cannot be ignored even in an age of social media and capitalist hegemony.”—Nelson Lichtenstein, coeditor of The Port Huron Statement: Sources and Legacies of the New Left’s Founding Manifesto

“A superb, revelatory biography not only of the legendary Fred Ross but also of the rank-and-file activists in the barrios and fields whose heroic persistence made possible the rebellions of the 1960s.”—Mike Davis, author of City of Quartz: Excavating the Future in Los Angeles

“This compelling biography chronicles how previously powerless farmworkers were brilliantly organized by the charismatic Fred Ross. With painful honesty, it also documents Ross’s sacrifice, personal pain, and loss to himself and to his loved ones involved in this campaign across a lifetime of heroic effort.”—Kevin Starr, author of the Americans and the California Dream series

A great read for lovers of history, progressive politics and grassroots organizing.
By L. Morrow
A must-read for anyone interested in activism, organizing and/or the history of activism/organizing. Thompson's extensively-researched biography of Fred Ross, the man who launched Cesar Chavez and Delores Huerta into action, is a compelling story, weaving US history (the Depression, WWII, the "Red Scare" years, etc.) with Ross' endless travels, first across the country and then all over the state of California. Ross started out a social worker but found his calling as an organizer, joining folks together for their common cause and then getting out of their way. The book captures with lots of detail the grueling pace such organizing requires, and doesn't gloss over the fact that Ross was an absentee husband/father, whose wives and children paid a high price for his obsession and success.

Readable, balanced, engaging -- a top-flight biography
By Mal Warwick
When the topic of community organizing comes up, a single name comes quickly to mind: Saul Alinsky. Alinsky is often cited as the founder of the field, having made his name through a hugely successful campaign on the South Side of Chicago in the 1940s. Two books he wrote, Reveille for Radicals (1946) and Rules for Radicals (1971), cemented his reputation nationwide. During my own brief experience as a community organizer in the late 1970s, Alinsky’s methodology dominated the field, largely through his writings. Yet another man, working in the fields of California, much closer to me in Berkeley, was compiling a record to rival and perhaps surpass Alinsky’s. He is the subject of an excellent new biography, America’s Social Arsonist: Fred Ross and Grassroots Organizing in the Twentieth Century.

Community organizing in rural California

After brief periods as a teacher and social worker, Fred Ross found his way into community organizing through a series of posts with the New Deal’s Farm Security Administration. As the manager of relief programs in a series of migrant camps set up to house the “Okies” made famous in John Steinbeck’s classic novel, The Grapes of Wrath, Ross became familiar with poverty at its worst. During World War II, Ross worked for the War Relocation Authority, which managed the relocation of Japanese-Americans to internment camps throughout the West. “In Cleveland,” as the Los Angeles Times pointed out in its obituary, “he was credited with persuading defense plant owners to hire [thousands of] Japanese-Americans, who were then freed from the camps to work.”

Following the war, Ross played a leading role in establishing the Community Service Organization (CSO) in South Los Angeles. Under his direction, the CSO registered the thousands of Latino voters who were instrumental in electing Edward Roybal as the first Hispanic to serve on the powerful L. A. City Council. With a vision much larger than local politics in L.A., Ross then set out to take the CSO statewide — and, he hoped, ultimately nationwide. However, that effort foundered once Ross and the organizers working with him left for other towns. Local CSO chapters, typically led by working class Mexican-Americans such as farmworkers, quickly fell under the sway of Latino professionals and business owners. These more affluent officials were unwilling to support the radical policies that the organization had been founded to pursue.

Enter Cesar Chavez

Though organizing CSO chapters brought Ross to the towns and cities of California, his passion centered on the plight of the Mexican and Mexican-American farmworkers who made California agriculture the envy of the world. When he met a twenty-five-year-old named Cesar Chavez in San Jose in 1952, Ross’ career began to shift away from urban California to the fields where thousands of poverty-stricken men, women, and children picked the fruits and vegetables that made the state’s powerful growers and packers wealthy. Chavez and Ross began a decades-long collaboration that led in 1958 to the establishment of what became the United Farm Workers union (founded by Chavez and Dolores Huerta). As Thompson writes, “When they met, Chavez would later say, Ross had been ‘about the last person I wanted to see. Then he started talking — and changed my life.'” Ross, the consummate organizer, remained steadfastly in the background through the many years of their work together.

Today, the United Farm Workers (UFW) is a faint shadow of the powerful union it was from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s. Much of the blame for the union’s decline must be laid at Chavez’ feet: he was a brilliant leader but a disastrous manager. “At one point,” Thompson points out, “when asked to name the people who reported directly to him, Chavez stopped counting at fifty-eight.” This number is an order of magnitude greater than what business experts call the “span of control.” Then, in 1976, against almost universal opposition from everyone around him, Chavez insisted on forcing a measure to be placed on the California statewide ballot to permit organizers to enter the fields so they could talk to farmworkers. When the measure failed by a vote of two-to-one, Chavez began the first of several purges of union staff, demonstrating a pattern of behavior that can only be called paranoid. (Thompson didn’t use the term; that’s my interpretation.) Chavez also brought a destructive cult called Synanon into the union, with predictably disastrous results. One of Chavez’ colleagues explained to all who would listen: “Cesar’s gone nuts.'” The union’s power quickly deteriorated, and eventually the UFW retreated from the fields and became essentially a lobbying organization. Today it relies on direct mail rather than farmworkers’ dues.

A balanced portrait of a man

America’s Social Arsonist paints a picture of a supremely talented and driven man with a litany of personal faults. He was intolerant of those he trained who lacked his passionate commitment to organizing, and many disliked him as a result. (As Thompson notes, “As an on organizer, Ross was endlessly patient. As a trainer of organizers, however, he could be merciless . . .”) Twice married and the father of three children, Ross was rarely at home. Though he was indifferent to the discomfort of poverty, that was not always the case with the members of his family. Only his younger son, Fred Ross Jr., came to know him, and only because he began working with his father in organizing at the age of sixteen. (Fred Jr. has himself become a world-class organizer. As Executive Director of Neighbor to Neighbor in the 1980s, he led a campaign around the country that helped persuade Congress to cut off U.S. aid to right-wing forces in Central America.)

A great book, a great read and a true story of creating justice.
By Donald Cohen
This is an important book. Fred Ross was an American hero that changed the lives of thousands of people. He trained legions of organizers committed to social and economic justice, many who are leading movements today. Thompson's book describes in detail the hard work of Fred's "no shortcut" organizing - bringing people together to solve problems, to create a just economy and a decent nation. It's a real story of how to make change. Read it.
