An ideal guide for anyone who reads a newspaper, watches television, or surfs the Web. In short, everyone. --Joe Swingle"Numeracy" (07/01/2009)"

From the Inside Flap
"If you ever scan the newspaper, watch the TV news, or surf the blogs, you should read this charming book. If you're a journalist, read it twice."—James M. Jasper

"As we now swim in information, much of it bogus or biased, spotting dubious data is super important. In Stat-Spotting, Joel Best plays off the format of field guides to give readers good, common sense ways not only to sense bad data but to understand what's wrong. Broken up into short independent sections much like field guides to various flora or fauna, the book is easy and enjoyable to read. Easy, enjoyable, and valuable. I will recommend it to my students, and to others, as a resource for critical consumers of numbers."—Bernard Madison, University of Arkansas

"The purpose of Stat-Spotting is to help readers become more critical consumers of statistical claims. It is an important work addressing a significant problem in contemporary society: thoughtlessness about numerical claims. Best's work here provides a direct, accessible guide to critical readings of statistics."—Neil Lutsky, Carleton College

Social Statistics - A Practical Guide
By George Poirier
There are many books written on the interpretation of statistical information for the non-specialist. Some are quite engaging and difficult to put down; others are quite boring. I would place this little book roughly in the middle of that range - it's not the most gripping but it is certainly an eye-opener for those seeking guidance in this field. The author, a sociology professor, has divided the book such that each chapter addresses a type of question that a reader should ask when reviewing statistical information that may seem dubious or misleading. Each chapter opens with a brief digression on the issue at hand. This is followed by a practical example, i.e., a statistical "fact" that has been published in some medium and which the author analyzes in order to put this "fact" into perspective and in a manner that the reader can more easily interpret. The writing style is clear, authoritative and accessible to a wide audience. People seeking to make sense of the statistical data that floods our lives every day would benefit greatly from reading this concise little book.

This book is full of surprises
By Toni
Statistics are used to support a variety of claims. It takes a trained eye to interpret the validity of a massive amount of statistical data particularly surrounding health care claims. Statistics are not synonymous with facts. Although statistics play a major role in data integrity one must look closer with a dubious eye. Especially since statistics are often used to support a claim or sell a concept. Joel Best takes the most common data marketing tricks and explains them to the lay person in a creative way. The dubious data is laid out before the reader as one would expect to see in an ecology field guide for nature enthusiasts. Therefore, Stat-Spotting fulfills its mission delightfully as promised by presenting a guide for spotting dubious data, "questionable stats". Along with the creative format the author also appeals to the reader's sense of reporting order by covering the "how", the "who" and the "what".
Be on the look out for "fictoids" which the author defines as colorful or erroneous stats used as a hyperbole. Where upon discovery a loud bell should ring in one's head as a reminder to not take literally but instead look deeper. In order to master stat spotting, here are a few simple rules to keep in mind:
1. Having a sense of scale allows you to understand the magnitude and validity of data.
2. The more severe or dramatic the case the more likely it is to be extremely rare.
3. Most people are innumerate or mathematically illiterate and subsequently easily fooled.
4. Keep an eye out for numbers that are surprising large or small.
5. The unit of measure is deceiving, for example using minutes to report a crime rate (% of total population)
6. All stats should be reported in simple language. The language used may change the implication of the data.
7. The graph is a visual representation of the statistic and may be misleading.
8. If the number is too high or too low, it most likely errs on the side of exaggeration and is therefore a guestimate. Think about how it was calculated.
9. Watch for superlatives by their nature they imply comparison.
10. Since every stat implies a definition realize the ever changing nature of definitions, for example "overweight"
11. Methodologies of data collection affect the outcome.
12. The "who" of data collection, that is, who supported the research will most likely affect the outcome.
13. Be aware of "meaningless milestones" which are the underlying trend and its cause.
14. The" law of averages" is very tricky. Therefore the median is a more useful measure particularly in a wide variation of numbers.
The underlying mission of Stat-Spotting is for the reader to become more mathematically astute. The frame of reference for many of the examples in the book is the health care field. As health care professionals are we rapidly accepting statistics as facts? Just a few of the book's statistical concepts that surround the health care profession are:
Epidemics compare old data and new data to draw conclusions but what if the definition of the disease changes?
Correlation does not necessarily prove causality therefore consider what other factors might explain the relationship.
Dramatic discoveries are a cautionary tale since a later study can prove them wrong.
The book has several pages of references to support Joel Best's concrete examples used throughout. There is also a list of helpful websites, blog sites, and suggested supplemental reading. If after reading Stat-Spotting you are still suspicious, then the guide has successfully served its purpose.

I want so badly to give this book five stars...
By Saganite
...but it's too slight. With some judicious editing, it's a journal article. But this is a case where the complaint is not that the food was bad and the portions too small: In fact, the food was so great, one wishes it were all-you-can-eat.

And then I'm left wondering if perhaps the book's very brevity might not be part of what makes it so splendind. I have often complained that too many books are mere pamphlets exploded out to book size to make them marketable. I guess if one does not tie value to mass, then even though this book might seem too little of a good thing, it is a remarkable value for what it does contain.

What it contains, chiefly, is a compact description of several particular species of stat problem (and ultimately, sign of a healthy stat) to watch out for, followed by an example of such a stat's use from real life. In this regard, it follows pretty literally its description as a "field guide," and the samples selected are key to what makes this book excellent.

I am not confident that after reading this book I will be as good at teasing out the issues as Best and other statisticians are, but he has tried to give me some tools to recognize some of the more egregious examples of number abuse. As someone who has long struggled with numeracy and come to see just how crucial it is for a rounded understanding of science and politics and other key subjects, I am grateful for the assistance such a guide provides. I think "Spotting" is a terrific book for people who find themselves in a similar position.

Maps of Time: An Introduction to Big History, by David Christian

An introduction to a new way of looking at history, from a perspective that stretches from the beginning of time to the present day, Maps of Time is world history on an unprecedented scale. Beginning with the Big Bang, David Christian views the interaction of the natural world with the more recent arrivals in flora and fauna, including human beings.

Cosmology, geology, archeology, and population and environmental studies—all figure in David Christian's account, which is an ambitious overview of the emerging field of "Big History." Maps of Time opens with the origins of the universe, the stars and the galaxies, the sun and the solar system, including the earth, and conducts readers through the evolution of the planet before human habitation. It surveys the development of human society from the Paleolithic era through the transition to agriculture, the emergence of cities and states, and the birth of the modern, industrial period right up to intimations of possible futures. Sweeping in scope, finely focused in its minute detail, this riveting account of the known world, from the inception of space-time to the prospects of global warming, lays the groundwork for world history—and Big History—true as never before to its name.

From Publishers Weekly
San Diego State University historian Christian is one of the founding figures of the "Big History" movement. His basic premise is that to truly make sense of human history, history must be integrated with virtually all other disciplines-and in order to do this correctly, historians must reach back to the beginning of time. It is becoming fairly well accepted for historians to draw on biology, economics, environmental studies and politics as well as a host of other fields of study, and Christian does a very nice job of explaining the factors that led to the rise of states, the industrial revolution and the information revolution, as well as looking at future possibilities for humankind. What is far less successful is his integration of cosmology, astrophysics and evolutionary biology with the basic fare usually associated with historical analysis. Rather than using the cosmological principles associated with the Big Bang, for example, to demonstrate "underlying unity and coherence" in all systems across time, Christian leaves the reader with a weak metaphor and limited insight. By attempting to cover all of the universe's 13 billion years in a single volume, even one approaching 600 pages, Christian is forced to use such a broad brush that readers will find much of this book to be fairly superficial. 45 b&w illus., 9 maps.

An ambitious and well-written book
By Alan Roe
David Christian's Map's of Time might bare the standard for non-parochial academic scholarship for years to come. Starting with the "big bang," Christian charts history from the beginning of the universe to the 21st century by drawing parallels between astronomical, biological, and historical phenomena. While the ambitious scope of this project might prove misguidedly off-putting to the narrow academic specialist (which certainly includes most academics), Christian deserves credit for painting a broad picture amidst an academic culture that prizes knowing more about less.

No one, even Christian, could possibly claim expertise in all the fields that this book traverses. Appropriately and refreshingly, rather than obscuring their works in the footnotes, Christian gives credits to the works of experts whose arguments he draws from within the main text. With a work of this scope, such credit is necessary often. Christian does not use much primary source material, which, again, will make professional historians question the work's greater relevance. But as he states in the introduction, while less accepted in academia, synthesizing information is often as important a task as discovering and presenting new information. This approach is more appealing for many intellectually engaged individuals who do not have the time or energy to keep up with the cutting edge of narrowly defined fields. If academics do not embrace such broader interdisciplinary projects then writers with less scholarly discipline will find eager audiences.

Without much prior knowledge of astronomical jargon, I found Christian's explanation of the big bang, quasars, black holes, star formation, the basic laws of gravitation, and many other complex astronomical phenomena both accessible and fascinating. His coverage of the controversies surrounding precise dating of human ancestors is exhaustive and his explanation of human evolution is cogent. As a historian, however, I think he probably dedicates too much time to these two sections (nearly half of the text).

From the agricultural to the industrial revolution, Christian stresses the interaction between different civilizations or "global zones" of influence as the primary dynamic in history, at least in Africa/Asia/Europe. This methodology illuminates the importance of interaction between civilizations and attempts to display the parochialism of studying "western" or "eastern" civilization in isolation. In this vein, this book responds to the increasing importance of globalization and the subsequent push in the academy and secondary schools for "world history." Yet while this might be an effective approach to analyzing dissemination of technology, the transmission of disease, and the integration of economies, it leaves much to be desired in the way of ideology and world views, which undoubtedly shapes history.

With the coming of the industrial revolution and the emergence of the nation state, Christian shifts his focus to Europe and eventually America. This focus is appropriate given that, for better or for worse, western nations have shaped most of history for the past two centuries. Christian's analysis of the environmental degradation that resulted from industrial nation states past and continuing attempts to consume more in the twentieth century is particularly powerful. Through extensive use of statistics, he shows that the current rate of population increases and consumption is unsustainable. This is not new news but putting this within a broad panorama of history goes a long way towards showing us just how profligate our society is. Ultimately, it makes Christian's speculation on possible futures especially relevant.

All told, this book is well-written, imaginative, and cogent. Realize, however, that Christian is not an expert in all these fields and will not leave readers with more specialized knowledge satisfied with his coverage of their areas of specialization.

Re: the 2011 edition, a mild Caveat Emptor
By Working Woman
I bought the prior 2004 edition some time ago, and finally got around to reading it, only to recognize that since the book was initially published, while many of the basic outlines of "big history events" such as theories regarding the origins of the Universe haven't changed, some of the details have. This is due to research conducted in the interim, as for example, in relation to findings from the Hubble telescope. I therefore considered buying the 2011 version, instead of trolling through the 2004. But careful scrutiny of the 2011 edition revealed that the 2011 version is in essence a re-issue, rather than the kind of thorough-going revision that I was hoping for. The author essentially admits this in the Preface when he notes that just 3 areas were revised, one of which has to do with the development of the academic field of Big History. I'm sure the latter will be of interest to some readers, but probably not to the run-of-the-mill lay reader. A look through the reference list at the end of the book confirms that this is essentially a re-issue--many of the references date from the mid-1990s into the early 2000's, but not beyond. I'm therefore recommending that if interested, readers should buy the initial edition, which I'm sure is now probably a little less expensive than this one. And with regard to the 2004 edition, I have started reading it, but will be reading other books besides to address some of the points where it is a bit out-dated or where more details would be helpful.

Maps of Time
By Sean Brocklebank
Weaknesses of the book
-The cosmology section assumes a very low level of knowledge about the subject, and will not be terribly interesting to those who have read more detailed accounts.
-The part of the book covering human civilizations, meanwhile, assumes a great deal of foreknowledge about the details of history (Christian provides virtually no discussion of the rise or fall of particular empires or political systems), making the text rather less useful to those without a reasonable knowledge of world history in the last 3,000 years.
-Christian's use of scientific terms and statistics can be at times misleading (though this may be unintentional). For example, when comparing rich countries to poor countries, Christian uses data unadjusted for differences in purchasing power, thus greatly amplifying the magnitude of income gaps. And again when emphasizing the rise of the multinational corporation, Christian compares the total market value of large corporations to the annual GDPs of nations, thus increasing the apparent size of the corporations.
-Finally, Christian seems at times unreasonably defensive of Marx and critical of free markets, at one point bemoaning that "Sadly, the Communist revolutions of the twentieth century suggest that overthrowing capitalism may be an extremely destructive project." (478). Why is that sad? Why does "Communism" begin with a capital "C" while "capitalism" does not? I may be nitpicking here, but he goes on like this for some time (incidentally, and perhaps only coincidentally, Christian has his doctorate in Russian history).
Strengths of the book
-The dustjacket is really nice. That may be trivial, but boy does this tome look good on a bookshelf.
-The book really does cover a lot of ground, going from the dawn of the universe through all of human history, rounding off with predictions which extend right through to the death of the last stars and the ultimate victory of thermodynamics' second law.
-Every chapter ends with a recommended reading list which is alone almost worth buying the book for.
-The writing style is at times irresistible; I could scarcely put down the book to relieve myself in pages 335-440 about the rise of the modern period.

Moral Laboratories: Family Peril and the Struggle for a Good Life, by Cheryl Mattingly

Moral Laboratories is an engaging ethnography and a groundbreaking foray into the anthropology of morality. It takes us on a journey into the lives of African American families caring for children with serious chronic medical conditions, and it foregrounds the uncertainty that affects their struggles for a good life. Challenging depictions of moral transformation as possible only in moments of breakdown or in radical breaches from the ordinary, it offers a compelling portrait of the transformative powers embedded in day-to-day existence. From soccer fields to dinner tables, the everyday emerges as a moral laboratory for reshaping moral life. Cheryl Mattingly offers vivid and heart-wrenching stories to elaborate a first-person ethical framework, forcefully showing the limits of third-person renderings of morality.

Review
"Mattingly convincingly bolsters her claims . . . an excellent demonstration of ethnographic and theoretical work."--Ezelle Sanford III"Center for Medical Humanities" (08/24/3015)

From the Inside Flap
"With her extraordinarily sharp analytic sensibilities and deep command of relevant philosophical traditions, Cheryl Mattingly has given us one of the first truly distinct and fully articulated positions in the booming anthropology of ethics. The synthesis of the phenomenological and Aristotelian traditions that she calls first person virtue ethics, together with the allied notion of everyday life as the setting for ongoing moral experimentation, light up ethnographic materials in strikingly new ways. This crucial book will transform the way anthropologists think about everyday ethics from the moment it appears."—Joel Robbins, Sigrid Rausing Professor of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge

"In this extraordinary book about moral action and the power of the ordinary, Cheryl Mattingly weaves together a luminous, unflinching ethnography of tragedy and possibility with a clear and incisive argument concerning the value of virtue ethics. Stunning and indispensable."—Michael Lambek, University of Toronto

"This book is one of those rare pieces of scholarship that has the potential to mark a generation of thinkers. In advocating the significance of taking a first-person perspective on moral life, Mattingly forcefully shows the limits of third-person renderings and deals with a complex history of philosophical and anthropological thinking on morality and ethics (particularly virtue ethics) in an accessible and immediately relevant way."—C. Jason Throop, University of California, Los Angeles

Handbook of Religion and the Asian City: Aspiration and Urbanization in the Twenty-First CenturyFrom University of California Press

Handbook of Religion and the Asian City highlights the creative and innovative role of urban aspirations in Asian world cities. It does not assume that religion is of the past and that the urban is secular, but instead points out that urban politics and governance often manifest religious boundaries and sensibilities—in short, that public religion is politics. The essays in this book show how projects of secularism come up against projects and ambitions of a religious nature, a particular form of contestation that takes the city as its public arena.

Questioning the limits of cities like Mumbai, Singapore, Seoul, Beijing, Bangkok, and Shanghai, the authors assert that Asian cities have to be understood not as global models of futuristic city planning but as larger landscapes of spatial imagination that have specific cultural and political trajectories. Religion plays a central role in the politics of heritage that is emerging from the debris of modernist city planning.

Megacities are arenas for the assertion of national and transnational aspirations as Asia confronts modernity. Cities are also sites of speculation, not only for those who invest in real estate but also for those who look for housing, employment, and salvation. In its potential and actual mobility, the sacred creates social space in which they all can meet. Handbook of Religion and the Asian City makes the comparative case that one cannot study the historical patterns of urbanization in Asia without paying attention to the role of religion in urban aspirations.

From the Inside Flap
“Combining theoretical creativity with vivid ethnography, van der Veer’s groundbreaking collection of essays explores the distinctive patterns of enchanted aspiration arising from the Asian metropolises that have become new centers of wealth and power, with consequences for the entire interdependent world.”—Richard Madsen, University of California, San Diego, author of Democracy’s Dharma: Religious Renaissance and Political Development in Taiwan

“Handbook of Religion and the Asian City complicates conventional assumptions equating modernity with secularism. Through richly documented case studies grounded in subtle ethnographic and historical analyses of kin-based, local, national, regional, and religious formations of sociality and aspiration, the various authors detail the vicissitudes of religiosity in spaces that in turn call for a rethinking of what we mean by urban life."—Michael Herzfeld, Harvard University, author of Evicted from Eternity: The Restructuring of Modern Rome

About the Author
Peter van der Veer is Director at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Göttingen and University Professor at Large at Utrecht University. Surgeon General's Warning: How Politics Crippled the Nation's Doctor, by Mike Stobbe

What does it mean to be the nation's doctor? In this engaging narrative, journalist Mike Stobbe examines the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General, emphasizing that it has always been unique within the federal government in its ability to influence public health. But now, in their efforts to provide leadership in public health policy, surgeons general compete with other high-profile figures such as the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services and the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Furthermore, in an era of declining budgets, when public health departments have eliminated tens of thousands of jobs, some argue that a lower-profile and ineffective surgeon general is a waste of money. By tracing stories of how surgeons general like Luther Terry, C. Everett Koop, and Joycelyn Elders created policies and confronted controversy in response to issues like smoking, AIDS, and masturbation, Stobbe highlights how this office is key to shaping the nation’s health and explailns why its decline is harming our national well-being.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Stobbe, national medical correspondent for the Associated Press, delivers a riveting history of the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General and the 18 doctors who held the post, beginning in 1871 with General William Sherman’s chief medical officer, John Woodworth. Stobbe spent seven years on this study of the nation’s doctor, interviewing nearly every living surgeon general. A few of many fascinating facts: Hugh Cumming, who became surgeon general in 1920, helped abolish the shared drinking cup at public water fountains; Thomas Parran, who became surgeon general in 1936, condoned the arrest of women deemed promiscuous spreaders of venereal disease; and in 1957, surgeon general Leroy Burney issued a 660-word statement on cigarette smoking and lung cancer. Later, C. Everett Koop became a hero for taking on Big Tobacco and advocating condom use and sexual education to help Americans understand and combat AIDS. Stobbe covers the proud moments and the despicable ones (the Tuskegee experiment on black men with syphilis). He covers the rise (1871–1948), the decline (1949–80), the struggle (1981–2001), and the plummet (2002–present), sadly concluding that because politicians have taken away the chief MD’s ability to be an independent speaker of truth, it may be time to shutter the Office of the Surgeon General. An outstanding resource on the history of U.S. public health. --Karen Springen

From the Inside Flap
"Mike Stobbe's history of the U.S. surgeon general is more than a grand tour of American medicine. It is a thoughtful and engaging analysis of what the surgeons general did and do while pursuing the not-always-so-straight line of advancing the public's health."—Howard Markel, M.D., Ph.D., George E. Great...informative and engaging.
By M. D. Terry
Terrific. Stobbe offers the reader an easy, detailed narrative of the history of the office of the Surgeon General and the Public Health Service, and the medicine and politics which affect both. The more important latter part of the book is Stobbe's analysis of the need for services such as are offered by the NIH, CDC, the office of the surgeon general and various parts of HHS which many regard as redundant.
This is and important, informative and engaging work. A very fine general history read, particularly for anyone interested in politics, government, health care, medicine or public health.

Traces the history of the office of the US Surgeon General. Underlying progressive mindset can be glimpsed in the writing, unsurprisingly perhaps due to the subject matter of public health.

Very well written.

The Fourth Trimester: Understanding, Protecting, and Nurturing an Infant through the First Three Months, by Susan Brink

The first three months of a baby’s life is an outside-the-uterus period of intense development, a biological bridge from fetal life to preparation for the real world. The fourth trimester has more in common with the nine months that came before than with the lifetime that follows. This comprehensive, intimate, and much-needed “operating manual” for newborns presents a new paradigm of a baby's early life that shifts our focus and alters our priorities.

Combining the latest scientific findings with real-life stories and experiences, Susan Brink examines critical dimensions of newborn development such as eating and nutrition, bonding and attachment, sleep patterns, sensory development, pain and pleasure, and the creation of foundations for future advancement. Brink offers well-informed, practical information and the reasons behind her advice so that parents and caretakers can make their own decisions about how to care for a newborn during this crucial period. The Fourth Trimester assures readers that infants are as biologically capable as they are physically helpless. They thrive on what is readily available in every household: consistent, loving attention.

McKenna, P.h.D., Director, Mother-Baby Behavioral Sleep Laboratory, University of Notre Dame "

By J. FORTE
We thought we were alone. Our baby was driving us nuts! She was only happy when she was eating or sleeping (rarely!). We felt like we'd be lied to. A big secret conspiracy, because if everyone knew how hard the first three months were, they'd never have a kid. Then we read this wonderful book. No, this book did not miraculously make our baby happy and quiet and an all-night sleeper. Three months of life did that. Now she's the baby we'd hoped for -- sweet, cute, smiley, and a great sleeper.
I wish someone had given us this book a couple of weeks before she was born. It wouldn't have changed her behavior, but it surely would have changed ours. We HIGHLY recommend this book. If you're having your first baby, definitely buy it. It also would make a terrific shower gift.

Great resource and a really easy read
By Anna
My friend told me about this book and at first I didn't listen because I was pregnant with #2 and sort of over baby books. But she wouldn't stop talking about it so I bought it and THANK GOODNESS I did. The other reviewer was correct - it's like having an instruction manual for a newborn. I wish I had had it for my first as well, but it was so helpful for my second. It explains so much, gives really useful and easy to understand tips and information and is just a great read. It's the perfect baby gift or the book to buy when you are in the hazy disorientation days of a newborn!

A Great Resource!!!
By Jessica Rine
They say babies don't come with an instruction booklet, but now they do! This is an amazing resource for the first three months of life for mom and baby post-birth. I wish I had this with my first, but it was still incredibly helpful with my third as well. This would have saved me many sleepless nights and preserved my sanity. It is my go-to baby shower gift for all my friends who are expecting.

Expression and Truth: On the Music of Knowledge, by Lawrence Kramer

Expression and truth are traditional opposites in Western thought: expression supposedly refers to states of mind, truth to states of affairs. Expression and Truth rejects this opposition and proposes fluid new models of expression, truth, and knowledge with broad application to the humanities. These models derive from five theses that connect expression to description, cognition, the presence and absence of speech, and the conjunction of address and reply. The theses are linked by a concentration on musical expression, regarded as the ideal case of expression in general, and by fresh readings of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s scattered but important remarks about music. The result is a new conception of expression as a primary means of knowing, acting on, and forming the world.

“Recent years have seen the return of the claim that music’s power resides in its ineffability. In Expression and Truth, Lawrence Kramer presents his most elaborate response to this claim. Drawing on philosophers such as Wittgenstein and on close analyses of nineteenth-century compositions, Kramer demonstrates how music operates as a medium for articulating cultural meanings and that music matters too profoundly to be cordoned off from the kinds of critical readings typically brought to the other arts. A tour-de-force by one of musicology’s most influential thinkers.”—Susan McClary, Desire and Pleasure in Seventeenth-Century Music.

From the Inside Flap
“Vintage Kramer: Musicology at its best and most responsible. Expression and Truth is a tour de force that continues the author’s longstanding commitment to understand music as a form of knowledge, a critical but often marginalized element of the ‘fundamental grammar of culture.’ This singularly original extended essay shows why and how music—expression in its most concentrated form—is the key to deciphering that grammar. Above all, as Kramer’s new book puts it, ‘we need not only to think about expression but also to think with it.’ Amen, and bravo.”—Richard Leppert, Regents Professor, University of Minnesota

About the Author
Lawrence Kramer, is Distinguished Professor of English and Music at Fordham University. He is the author of many books, most recently, Musical Meaning: Toward a Critical History, Opera and Modern Culture, and Why Classical Music Still Matters.

The Queen and I: A Story of Dispossessions and Reconnections in Hawai'i, by Sydney L. Iaukea

In this exposé Sydney L. Iaukea ties personal memories to newly procured political information about Hawaii’s crucial Territorial era. Spurred by questions surrounding intergenerational property disputes in her immediate family, she delves into Hawaii’s historical archives. There she discovers the central role played by her great-great-grandfather in the politics of late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Hawaii—in particular, Curtis P. Iaukea’s trusted position with the Hawaiian Kingdom’s last ruling monarch, Queen Liliuokalani. As Iaukea charts her ancestor’s efforts to defend a culture under siege, she reveals astonishing legal and legislative maneuvers that show us how capitalism reshaped cultural relationships. She finds resonant parallels and connections between her own upbringing in Maui’s housing projects, her family’s penchant for hiding property, and the Hawaiian peoples’ loss of their country and lands.

Review
"A gripping and revelatory read, endowed with all the trappings of romance, melodrama and ghost story."--"Honolulu Weekly"

"The sensibility and lyricism shared by author and ancestor . . . inform their mutual desire to illuminate history and right wrongs."--"Ka Wai Ola"

From the Inside Flap
"The Queen and I will be a very important contribution to historical and political literature on early twentieth century Hawai'i. But through its intensely personal narrative, it could have an even greater impact on the way people look at history. Sydney Iaukea weaves archival information into a story about a well-known historical figure while demonstrating the impact of these archival voices on herself. In this way she binds herself to her ancestor and allows him to speak through her, showing how an ancient value can be a new methodology for Native writers in indigenous studies."

—Jonathan Kay Kamakawiwo’ole Osorio, author of Dismembering Lahui: A History of the Hawaiian Nation to 1887

“Raised in Maui’s housing projects, Sydney Iaukea discovers as an adult that she is the direct descendent of Curtis P. Iaukea, a prominent statesman and trusted adviser to Queen Lili’uokalani, the Hawaiian Kingdom’s last ruling monarch. In this courageous work, she documents her dual quest to recover her lost lineage and her ancestor’s historical importance. Revealing the continuity between public and private, personal and historical, Sydney Iaukea’s compelling narrative brings her readers face-to-face with Lili’uokalani during the tragic days of her overthrow.”

—Mary Palevsky, author of Atomic Fragments: A Daughter's Questions

“For those of us born and raised in Hawai'i, Sydney Iaukea's work sheds light on a period of time about which we still know too little, the overthrow of Hawai’i’s sovereign government and its forcible annexation to the U.S. This is a compelling narrative, driven by the mystery of a girl growing up poor, unaware of her distinguished lineage. How could this disconnect have occurred? Through the exploration of memories embedded in the landscape, Iaukea ultimately links displacement, dispossession, and familial strife to Hawai'i's troubled history with the U.S. Iaukea is to be commended for her honest and open heart.”

—Matthew M. Hamabata, Executive Director, The Kohala Center

About the Author
Sydney L. Iaukea holds a Ph.D. in political science with a specialty in Hawai?i politics. She is a dedicated community member, instructor, and avid surfer.

A story that needed telling
By Monica
Sydney Iaukea's book about her ancestor's role in the life (and death) of Queen Liliuokalani is a must read for those interested in Hawaii's past. For anyone who may be on the fence about purchasing this book, let me say that it is not everyday that someone discovers that boxes and boxes of uncataloged documents of their ancestor sit in the basement of a state archives building. It is truly a wild ride to be reading information found in these long forgotten documents!

Sydney's book is part self-discovery and part historical perspective of what took place nearly one-hundred years ago---a kind of "behind the scenes" look at what went on in the queen's life shortly after U.S. annexation, and the years leading up to her death in 1917. Who could the queen trust? Could she trust Curtis P. Iaukea, one of her advisors and a trustee of her estate? READ THE BOOK

Queen and I
By NeysaZ
An excellent read on the Hawaiian state history. Written by someone who researched to find out about her family, and to come up with so much inside information on the Queen - outstanding. I knew the US businessmen stole Hawaii from its people, but I did not know the extent of the damage done to the Queen and her family. A fascinating, true, story.
