Another Politics: Talking across Today's Transformative Movements, by Chris Dixon

Amidst war, economic meltdown, and ecological crisis, a “new spirit of radicalism is blooming” from New York to Cairo, according to Chris Dixon. In Another Politics, he examines the trajectory of efforts that contributed to the radicalism of Occupy Wall Street and other recent movement upsurges. Drawing on voices of leading organizers across the United States and Canada, he delivers an engaging presentation of the histories and principles that shape many contemporary struggles.

Dixon outlines the work of activists aligned with anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist, and anti-oppression politics and discusses the lessons they are learning in their efforts to create social transformation. The book explores solutions to the key challenge for today’s activists, organizers, fighters, and dreamers: building a substantive link between the work of “against,” which fights ruling institutions, and the work of “beyond,” which develops liberatory alternatives.

Review
"An excellent distillation of what Dixon calls 'another politics, ' a shared political orientation that unites grassroots organizers working from similar principles in the United States and Canada across issue, movement, sector, strategy and identity. . . . Like a good organizing mentor, Dixon (and his interviewees) gives us insight without 'right' answers, helping to deepen our understanding of commonalities and remind us of the deep roots of the 'another politics' leftist lineage."--Andrew Willis Garces"Waging Nonviolence" (12/02/2014)"

"An invaluable snapshot of the North American left today. . . . To understand the state of the left in North America, in all its aspirations and its limitations, Another Politics is an important book."--Justin Podur"teleSUR" (12/16/2014)

"With such widespread challenges and injustice facing our society, combined with the shifting energies and momentum of people power, the 'another politics' Chris Dixon documents in Another Politics: Talking Across Today's Transformative Movements offers perhaps the most promising and exciting approaches to collectively addressing these problems while simultaneously moving us into the world in which we wish to live."--Greg MacDougall"Rabble" (03/19/2015)

"Gripping and politically productive . . . impressive and important . . . A compelling work of social and political theory."--Ted Rutland"Race & Class" (07/30/2015)

"One of the most engaging books on activism that I've read in a long time . . . Another Politics is inspiring and thought provoking without being naive. A must read for anyone into activism and grassroots politics."--E V E L Y N"We Were Raised By Wolves" (12/01/2015)

"Dixon is an extremely generous scholar as he weaves his text around interviews with movement participants. The book offers readers a meticulous account of these organizing cultures in addition to the thought processes, decision-making mechanisms, and application of historical reflections and theoretical concepts in a contemporary social movement."--Kevin Van Meter "Cultural Geographies "

From the Inside Flap
“Another Politics is a much needed and indispensable exploration of the roots of efforts to develop radical politics leading up to Occupy Wall Street and beyond. With the collaboration of dozens of those involved in this process, Chris Dixon provides guidance for transformational change.”
—Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, author of An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States

“The product of a major research effort, based on more than two hundred interviews and conversations with organizers from contemporary social movements, Chris Dixon’s Another Politics is an invaluable book. It is a map to a new world of struggles and organizational forms, outside the logic of traditional political parties and unions, written with great clarity, insightfulness, and ability to listen to the new voices of our time. All those aspiring to be part of a broad process of social change should have Dixon’s book on their shelves.”
—Silvia Federici, author of Revolution at Point Zero and Caliban and the Witch

"Another Politics is an insightful, much-needed contribution to US and Canadian movements working for transformative change.  Chris Dixon provides a clear framework for interpreting the methods being developed across our local experiments and contextualizes them in the longer trajectories from which they developed.  Another Politics is revealing and energizing—it will be a great tool for scholars of social movements in activist reading groups and university classrooms.  It will also help activists engaged in vibrant local work learn about each other’s projects and approaches.  This book helps us understand what we’re doing, how we came to be doing it and why."
—Dean Spade, author of Normal Life: Administrative Violence, Critical Trans Politics and the Limits of Law

Captures a Crucial Turning Point in Anti-Authoritarian Politics
By Jeremy Louzao
Skateboarding. I think skateboarding is the best analogy I can find for why I think this book is so important, why you should buy it and read it, and why you should engage the questions that it raises by talking with friends or forming a study group.

In the early days, before skateboarding was a sport, when it was just another childhood novelty, another slinky or pogo stick, there wasn't much that had to be said about it. The skateboarding "discourse" was mighty thin. Just throw together ramshackle roller-skate wheels and plywood, and find a smooth surface for some sidewalk surfing. But in the 80's--as so interestingly captured in retrospectives like Dogtown and Z-Boys--when a bunch of surf kids started putting in the extra time to explore the possibilities under their feet, and then in that transcendent moment when they realized they could go from just hugging the ground to actually rocketing into the air, everything changed. Skateboarding transformed into something different, and the vocabulary, the areas of interest and focus, the very understanding of what good or bad skateboarding was were completely reshaped. Flips and spins and gaps and railslides were thrown out there into the culture to be pondered, practiced, perfected. It turned out that the childhood novelty contained exquisite potential for demonstrating human grace and ingenuity.

I think that this book, Another Politics, documents a similar historical moment in the development of North American anti-authoritarian politics: the moment where many of us are realizing that our often dismissed movements really can defy society's gravity and launch us into freer air.

This book deftly shows how the last 25 plus years have seen the steady convergence of a variety of political threads--including the punk and peace movement pedigree of anarchist direct actions and organizing styles; the brilliant and innovative tidal wave of women of color feminism that has washed across the academy, the non-profit sector, and grassroots campaign initiatives; and the visionary call of prison abolitionists to imagine a world without jails. With time and experience, these movements have discovered their ability to evolve from being gadflies and nuisances, to winning small changes, to actually projecting and building new kinds of bottom-up people power. Right now we are in a thrilling time where we're starting to take ourselves more seriously as a legitimate political pole; we're starting to acknowledge that our wheels can leave the ground and do amazing things in the air. And, like a documentarian hanging out on the edges of graffitied swimming pools in 1980's California, Chris Dixon seems to be in just the right places at the right time to show us how the discourse is changing on the ground.

Just as skateboarding's aerial paradigm shift completely changed the way people understood the sport and talked to each other within it, the blossoming of what Dixon calls the anti-authoritarian current has led to a cascade of new questions, new vocabulary, and new ways of understanding success and failure. The greatest strength of Another Politics is how it distills numerous organizers' voices as they talk through their experiences of this shifting landscape. From the Bay Area to New Orleans, from Atlanta to Toronto, from New York City to Vancouver, we feel like witnesses to and participants in fiery living room conversations. Whether we are hearing reflections on grassroots responses to Hurricane Katrina or Superstorm Sandy, the mobilization of Sikh communities to resist deportations, or the youth organizers of Sista II Sista liberating their New York neighborhoods from violence, we get to see the somewhat raw and intimate hopes and doubts that accompany all the flashy public organizing work. We see person after person asking about care and mutual support within our movements; about questions of long-term strategy and how to better analyze who our enemy is (what Dixon condenses as the "four anti's"); about nuanced approaches to anti-authoritarian leadership; about the opportunities and traps of the "non-profit industrial complex;" about the search to build stable and nurturing "political homes;" and about sustaining our vision of a new world while staying grounded in the world as it is. In all of this, we are spared any heavy-handed prescriptive formulas and instead--especially in the final chapter--welcomed into the conversation.

Certainly, there are gaps in Dixon's coverage of these emerging dialogues. First is the book's own admission that it focuses almost exclusively on urban organizing. With some of the most promising experiments with grassroots organizing happening in the fields of Oregon, in the mining towns of Appalachia, and in rural communities all over the South, one really feels the need for a rurally-focused companion volume. Second, I think the book--presumably in the interest of highlighting the freshness of the modern anti-authoritarian current--distances itself a little too far from the legacy of capital-A Anarchism, and could have been further enriched by including more of the crucial reflections and contributions from anti-authoritarian movement corners like Z Magazine and Z-Net, Crimethinc Ex-Workers Collective, and the growing class-struggle anarchist milieu. Third, I found myself wishing that Dixon's interviews would have more thoroughly explored issues of repression and intentional movement de-stabilization, which will only get heavier as our movements gain headway. Fortunately, the book is humble and accessible enough to recognize where it falters, and opens space for others to fill in the gaps.

As far as I've tried to push the skateboarding analogy, there is one area where it completely falls apart: whereas skateboarding's airborne revelations and subsequent evolution turned it into an ever more specialized--and professionalized--pastime, the rise of anti-authoritarian politics depends on quite the opposite process. As the anti-authoritarian current finds its confidence and grows, it must open itself up to even more widespread participation, with even more of us weighing in on all the urgent and powerful questions of the day. It must belong to more than just Dixon and the 50+ people he interviewed in this book. It must belong to all of us.

The reason why I recommend this book so highly, then, is because Another Politics feels like precisely the kind of historical and theoretical primer that I think we need for more people to be able to lend their voices to the discussion.

Arete: Greek Sports from Ancient Sources, by Stephen G. Miller

From the informal games of Homer's time to the highly organized contests of the Roman world, Miller has compiled a trove of ancient sources: Plutarch on boxing, Aristotle on the pentathlon, Philostratos on the buying and selling of victories, Vitruvius on literary competitions, and Xenophon on female body building. Arete offers readers an absorbing lesson in the culture of Greek athletics from the greatest of teachers, the ancients themselves, and demonstrates that the concepts of virtue, skill, pride, valor, and nobility embedded in the word arete are only part of the story from antiquity. "A remarkable compendium of ancient sources . . . An invaluable resource for the study of Greek sport . . . What Miller’s Arete does extremely well is to show that 'nearly almost every aspect of athletics we know today existed already in that distant but kindred world'" (The European Legacy 2015-12-23)

The Persistence of Sentiment: Display and Feeling in Popular Music of the 1970s, by Mitchell Morris

How can we account for the persistent appeal of glossy commercial pop music? Why do certain performers have such emotional power, even though their music is considered vulgar or second rate? In The Persistence of Sentiment, Mitchell Morris gives a critical account of a group of American popular music performers who have dedicated fan bases and considerable commercial success despite the critical disdain they have endured. Morris examines the specific musical features of some exemplary pop songs and draws attention to the social contexts that contributed to their popularity as well as their dismissal. These artists were all members of more or less disadvantaged social categories: members of racial or sexual minorities, victims of class and gender prejudices, advocates of populations excluded from the mainstream. The complicated commercial world of pop music in the 1970s allowed the greater promulgation of musical styles and idioms that spoke to and for exactly those stigmatized audiences. In more recent years, beginning with the “Seventies Revival” of the early 1990s, additional perspectives and layers of interpretation have allowed not only a deeper understanding of these songs' function than when they were first popular, but also an appreciation of how their significance has shifted for American listeners in the succeeding three decades.

Review
"An engaging exploration of dedicated music fan bases that emerged in the 1970s. . . . Highly recommended."--M. Goldsmith"CHOICE" (10/01/2013)

From the Inside Flap
“Who can resist the self-indulgent pleasures of Barry White’s “Love Theme,” Cher’s “Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves,” or the Carpenters’ “Rainy Days and Mondays”? In richly evocative prose, Mitchell Morris explores the enduring affective force of the opulent and excessive 1970s sonic palette and its context of television shows, movies, popular literature, and later nostalgic-ironic revivals. Engaging critical issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality, this groundbreaking and intrepid study of pure pop speaks to cultural historians and theorists as well as music scholars and fans.” —Judith A. Peraino, author of Listening to the Sirens: Musical Technologies of Queer Identity from Homer to Hedwig.

“Immensely learned but full of demotic wisdom, The Persistence of Sentiment immediately takes its place in the fistful of the essential books of popular music studies.”—Robert Walser, author of Running With the Devil: Power, Gender, and Madness in Heavy Metal Music

Morris is one to watch
By Damon Parker
The title is misleading since the author cannot hope to capture the profound topic of sentiment or the music of a decade in a slim volume. It reads like a PhD and subsequent journal articles in its narrow content and the linking mechanism (gender) is not fully teased out or supplemented with a more thorough analysis - actually aching for more analysis because this guy is definitely onto the topic. What is analysed within the narrow scope is done very well and is erudite and compulsive reading. Morris, in reaching out to other disciplines for analytical content is to be commended, and he is someone to watch. I look forward to his next book. In sum, this book is undoubtedly fully worth buying if you have an interest in the topic.

Racial Formation in the Twenty-First CenturyFrom University of California Press

Michael Omi and Howard Winant’s Racial Formation in the United States remains one of the most influential books and widely read books about race. Racial Formation in the 21st Century, arriving twenty-five years after the publication of Omi and Winant’s influential work, brings together fourteen essays by leading scholars in law, history, sociology, ethnic studies, literature, anthropology and gender studies to consider the past, present and future of racial formation. The contributors explore far-reaching concerns: slavery and land ownership; labor and social movements; torture and war; sexuality and gender formation; indigineity and colonialism; genetics and the body. From the ecclesiastical courts of seventeenth century Lima to the cell blocks of Abu Grahib, the essays draw from Omi and Winant’s influential theory of racial formation and adapt it to the various criticisms, challenges, and changes of life in the twenty-first century.

From the Inside Flap
"This collection of essays marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the publication of Michael Omi and Howard Winant’s Racial Formation in the United States demonstrates the importance and influence of the concept of racial formation. The range of disciplines, discourses, ideas, and ideologies makes for fascinating reading, demonstrating the utility and applicability of racial formation theory to diverse contexts, while at the same time presenting persuasively original extensions and elaborations of it. This is an important book, one that sums up, analyzes, and builds on some of the most important work in racial studies during the past three decades."—George Lipsitz, author of How Racism Takes Place

“Racial Formation in the Twenty-First Century is truly a state-of-the-field anthology, fully worthy of the classic volume it honors—timely, committed, sophisticated, accessible, engaging. The collection will be a boon to anyone wishing to understand the workings of race in the contemporary United States.” —Matthew Frye Jacobson, Professor of American Studies, Yale University

“This stimulating and lively collection demonstrates the wide-ranging influence and generative power of Omi and Winant’s racial formation framework. The contributors are leading scholars in fields ranging from the humanities and social sciences to legal and policy studies. They extend the framework into new terrain, including non-U.S. settings, gender and sexual relations, and the contemporary warfare state. While acknowledging the pathbreaking nature of Omi and Winant’s intervention, the contributors do not hesitate to critique what they see as limitations and omissions. This is a must-read for anyone striving to make sense of tensions and contradictions in racial politics in the U.S. and transnationally.”—Evelyn Nakano Glenn, editor of Shades of Difference: Why Skin Color Matters

The Noodle Narratives: The Global Rise of an Industrial Food into the Twenty-First Century, by Frederick Errington, Deborah Gewertz, Tatsu

Tasty, convenient, and cheap, instant noodles are one of the most remarkable industrial foods ever. Consumed around the world by millions, they appeal to young and old, affluent and impoverished alike. The authors examine the history, manufacturing, marketing, and consumption of instant noodles. By focusing on three specific markets, they reveal various ways in which these noodles enable diverse populations to manage their lives. The first market is in Japan, where instant noodles have facilitated a major transformation of post-war society, while undergoing a seemingly endless tweaking in flavors, toppings, and packaging in order to entice consumers. The second is in the United States, where instant noodles have become important to many groups including college students, their nostalgic parents, and prison inmates. The authors also take note of “heavy users,” a category of the chronically hard-pressed targeted by U.S. purveyors. The third is in Papua New Guinea, where instant noodles arrived only recently and are providing cheap food options to the urban poor, all the while transforming them into aspiring consumers. Finally, this study examines the global “Big Food” industry. As one of the food system’s singular achievements, the phenomenon of instant noodles provides insight into the pros and cons of global capitalist provisioning.

Instant noodles: potential solution to world hunger?
By Jia Ming Li
The Noodle Narrative's three authors examine the role of instant noodles in people's lives across three very different markets: Japan - the birthplace of instant noodles, where they occupy a space of cultural obsession spawning a slew of zany flavors; the United States - where instant noodles have come to represent a symbol of transition, in which one moves from less-fortunate circumstances to hopefully better ones (ie. college, prison, poverty); Papua New Guinea - a relative newcomer into the sphere of influence wielded by instant noodles where mostly poor people enjoy it for a taste of modernity meanwhile fulfilling aspirations of participating in global consumer culture.

While Errington, Fujikura, Gewertz don't quite proffer instant noodles as the ultimate cure for world hunger, they argue that the flash fried noodle blocks do hold tremendous potential. That perhaps after some tweaks to its nutritional content - less sodium and fortified with vitamins and nutrients - it may become a much more viable solution. However, as with any dirt-cheap commodity available in nearly every international market, there comes a dark side. With instant noodles, it's palm oil. I wish the authors had elaborated more on palm oil exploitation (seeing as how I am an environmental studies major and all holla), but that discussion along with the discussion about instant noodles as a product of "big food" felt brief and glossed over given the global implications of an almost-too-convenient answer to such a massive humanitarian problem.

3.5 stars
By Elizabeth Ray
The Noodle Narratives is an interesting history of instant noodles, with chapters focusing on their "use" in the US, Japan, and Papua New Guinea. Although published by an academic press (with lengthy sections on notes and references), it is written in a style that is accessible to the casual reader, though it is sometimes a bit dry.

The chapters which focus on the history, production, and consumption of instant noodles are the most enjoyable. The last couple of chapters which discuss the pros and cons of processed foods cover the same topics as many other food books, including a critique of Michael Pollen's food philosophies. Here the authors seem to be stretching to make instant noodles central to the discussion.

This is a relatively short book with enough interviews and facts about instant noodles to appeal to anyone who has eaten a lot of ramen (which is pretty much anyone who has gone to college).

Arnold Schoenberg's A Survivor from Warsaw in Postwar Europe (California Studies in 20th-Century Music), by Joy H. Calico

Joy H. Calico examines the cultural history of postwar Europe through the lens of the performance and reception of Arnold Schoenberg's A Survivor from Warsaw—a short but powerful work, she argues, capable of irritating every exposed nerve in postwar Europe. Schoenberg, a Jewish composer whose oeuvre had been one of the Nazis’ prime exemplars of entartete (degenerate) music, immigrated to the United States and became an American citizen. Both admired and reviled as a pioneer of dodecaphony, he wrote this twelve-tone piece about the Holocaust in three languages for an American audience. This book investigates the meanings attached to the work as it circulated through Europe during the early Cold War in a kind of symbolic musical remigration, focusing on six case studies: West Germany, Austria, Norway, East Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. Each case is unique, informed by individual geopolitical concerns, but this analysis also reveals common themes in anxieties about musical modernism, Holocaust memory and culpability, the coexistence of Jews and former Nazis, anti-Semitism, dislocation, and the presence of occupying forces on both sides of the Cold War divide.

Review
"Joy Calico, however, writes with an ease and fluidity that positively invite the reader to understand her ideas and observations. She takes one of Schoenberg s most important American works and uses it as a political barometer during the crucial post-war years of 1948 to 1968. As concepts go, it is quite brilliant. Addressing Cold War cultural politics in Germany, Austria, Norway, Poland and Czechoslovakia using Schoenberg s "A Survivor from Warsaw" clearly illuminates the political complexities of the time."--Michael Haas"Times Literary Supplement" (02/18/2015)"

From the Inside Flap
"An exemplary exploration in cultural history which shows with great nuance and sophistication how a single seven-minute musical work can open up so many key themes for understanding postwar Europe. This is a fascinating and important book that demonstrates how postwar Europe, including its Cold War division, needs to be understood not solely through politics but through the interpretation of cultural forms."
—Dan Stone, author of Goodbye to All That? The Story of Europe since 1945 (forthcoming 2014)

"A unique addition to the burgeoning field of Cold War music studies. In Calico's hands, a meticulously researched history of the European reception of Schoenberg's brief cantata becomes a compelling tale of high-stakes cultural politics."
—Walter Frisch, author of The Early Works of Arnold Schoenberg

"Using Schoenberg's charged Holocaust memorial as a guide, Calico traces an innovative, transnational path through postwar European cultural life, challenging, refining, and overturning well-worn assumptions along the way. This highly compelling book will appeal to a wide range of readers interested in history, music, politics, Jewish studies, and the Cold War."
—Peter Schmelz, Associate Professor of Musicology, Washington University in St. Louis

The European performance history of Schoenberg's haunting Holocaust work reveals many postwar political trends in microcosm
By Christopher Culver
Arnold Schoenberg's work "A Survivor from Warsaw" op. 46 was one of the major triumphs of the composer's career while in exile in the United States. Written in 1947, it presents the account of a Holocaust survivor over a dramatic twelve-tone orchestral backing; the man that the reciter plays is an imaginary character that Schoenberg came up with himself, drawing on the varied reports coming from Europe after the war. At the climax, a male choir enters in with the Hebrew "Sh'ma Yisroel", the hymn that also serves as an age-old symbol of Jewish faith and identity.

This book by Joy H. Calico is dedicated to how "A Survivor from Warsaw" came to Europe in the first two decades after Schoenberg composed it. Not only was the piece being performed among audiences still very aware of the war years, but its reception was also buffeted by the winds of political quarrels and geopolitics. The performance history of the piece is in fact a mirror of postwar -- and sometimes Cold War -- Europe.

Calico describes performances and the reception of "A Survivor from Warsaw" in West Germany, Austria, Norway, East Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia between 1948 and 1968. (The European premiere in France is passed over, as little evidence remains of it.) For each country she looks at the musical personalities who managed to get Schoenberg's work programmed and the bureaucratic challenges they faced. Some of these Schoenberg supporters, like Norwegian composer Pauline Hall, were interesting characters themselves and will spur the reader on to learn more about them. Calico then goes through the press reactions to the concerts and notes what political orientation each newspaper had.

In Austria and Norway, the piece was performed against a background of widespread denial of any guilt for the persecution of the Jews. Austria defined itself as the first victim of Nazi oppression, in spite of the enormous role that Austrians played in the Holocaust. The German translation used even put the cruel German commandant's dialogue into a distinctly German, not Austrian, form of the language to further disassociate the events described from the country where the work was performed. That widespread denial, along with considerable remaining anti-Semitism, could not help but be reflected in what the critics wrote.

Any audience today will recognize "A Survivor from Warsaw" for what it in fact is: a depiction of the persecution of the Jews and a statement of Jewish faith. In the Communist Bloc, however, the Jewish element of the work was initially denied to an overwhelming degree. The piece was depicted instead as a general attack on fascism, commemorating those anonymous masses in Poland who suffered German oppression until the Soviet liberation. Because fascism was now defined, under Soviet pressure, as a late stage of capitalism, and not "Aryan" supremacy and the persecution of ethnic minorities, the work could even be performed as a snub against the Communist bloc's new opponents in the West.

As a Russian speaker, who has so often seen the history of Nazi Germany presented in this "de-Semiticized" way, I could understand all too well how Schoenberg's work could be so distorted. But Calico reveals some Cold War intrigues that were completely new to me. In Poland, "A Survivor from Warsaw" was premiered by touring East Germany musicians in a concert that also included two supposedly godawful socialist realist pieces. The background of this Polish premiere was a feud between an uptight Eastern Germany that still followed Stalinist restrictions in the arts and a "thawing" Poland more opened to avant-garde trends at festivals like the Warsaw Autumn. In the Czech Republic, figures sympathetic to Schoenberg sought to evade restrictions on twelve-tone music by hyping the "social dedication" of Schoenberg's works written in his American period, as opposed to the "mistaken" path he followed before his emigration from Europe.

This book is unlikely to serve anyone wanting to better understand "A Survivor from Warsaw" itself and its exotic twelve-tone idiom. However, for readers interested in 20th-century European history, the piece as a case study is fascinating, and it just goes to show how no musical work is ever independent of the place and time it was written or performed.

Honorable Mention 2016 Laura Shannon Prize in Contemporary European Studies
By Monica Caro
This book received an honorable mention for the 2016 Laura Shannon Prize in Contemporary European Studies. The jury commended Calico's work "as a searching exploration of the way in which one of the great musical reflections on the Holocaust had been received in the communist countries after the Second World War. The book brought much new information to light, and was particularly illuminating concerning the status of Jews and of art devoted to their suffering during the communist years." The members of the final jury were:
• Karl Ameriks, McMahon-Hank Professor of Philosophy, University of Notre Dame;
• John Hare, Noah Porter Professor of Philosophical Theology, Yale Divinity School;
• Anne Lake Prescott, Helen Goodhart Altschul Professor of English Emerita, Barnard College, Columbia University;

A Passion for Facts: Social Surveys and the Construction of the Chinese Nation-State, 1900-1949 (Asia Pacific Modern), by Tong Lam

In this path-breaking book, Tong Lam examines the emergence of the “culture of fact” in modern China, showing how elites and intellectuals sought to transform the dynastic empire into a nation-state, thereby ensuring its survival. Lam argues that an epistemological break away from traditional modes of understanding the observable world began around the turn of the twentieth century. Tracing the Neo-Confucian school of evidentiary research and the modern departure from it, Lam shows how, through the rise of the social survey, “the fact” became a basic conceptual medium and source of truth. In focusing on China’s social survey movement, A Passion for Facts analyzes how information generated by a range of research practices—census, sociological investigation, and ethnography—was mobilized by competing political factions to imagine, manage, and remake the nation.

From the Inside Flap
“This fascinating book is a fundamental contribution to the global history of social science. Tong Lam demonstrates how Chinese reformers struggled to build a modern society on a foundation of facts and statistics. Their ambitions were no mere dream, but were made real in a prodigious social survey movement which aimed as much to enlighten peasants as to inform administrators.” —Theodore Porter, author of Trust in Numbers

“Lam’s approach is highly original. A Passion for Facts presents an impressive host of new material from Chinese and American archives that challenges interpretations of China and Chinese exceptionalism or independent development. Lam makes a compelling argument that the techniques developed in the early twentieth century and refined over several decades have been critical to state-building in China.” —James L. Hevia, author of English Lessons: The Pedagogy of Imperialism in Nineteenth Century China

“Lam supersedes the current ‘China-centered approach’ and the earlier framework that explained ‘modern China’ in light of global colonialism. He illuminates how the search for ‘facts’ empowered modern Chinese to reimagine their social and political realities in a global colonial context.” —Benjamin A. Elman, Chair, East Asian Studies Department, Princeton University

Love, Money, and HIV: Becoming a Modern African Woman in the Age of AIDS, by Sanyu A. Mojola

How do modern women in developing countries experience sexuality and love? Drawing on a rich array of interview, ethnographic, and survey data from her native country of Kenya, Sanyu A. Mojola examines how young African women, who suffer disproportionate rates of HIV infection compared to young African men, navigate their relationships, schooling, employment, and finances in the context of economic inequality and a devastating HIV epidemic. Writing from a unique outsider-insider perspective, Mojola argues that the entanglement of love, money, and the transformation of girls into “consuming women” lies at the heart of women’s coming-of-age and health crises. At once engaging and compassionate, this text is an incisive analysis of gender, sexuality, and health in Africa.

Black and Blue: The Origins and Consequences of Medical Racism, by J. Hoberman

Black & Blue is the first systematic description of how American doctors think about racial differences and how this kind of thinking affects the treatment of their black patients. The standard studies of medical racism examine past medical abuses of black people and do not address the racially motivated thinking and behaviors of physicians practicing medicine today.

Black & Blue penetrates the physician’s private sphere where racial fantasies and misinformation distort diagnoses and treatments. Doctors have always absorbed the racial stereotypes and folkloric beliefs about racial differences that permeate the general population. Within the world of medicine this racial folklore has infiltrated all of the medical sub-disciplines, from cardiology to gynecology to psychiatry. Doctors have thus imposed white or black racial identities upon every organ system of the human body, along with racial interpretations of black children, the black elderly, the black athlete, black musicality, black pain thresholds, and other aspects of black minds and bodies. The American medical establishment does not readily absorb either historical or current information about medical racism. For this reason, racial enlightenment will not reach medical schools until the current race-aversive curricula include new historical and sociological perspectives.

well researched, poorly organized, misleading chronologically
By Karen
This book, although well researched, is unfortunately not well written. The book is a history of medical racism, but not presented in chronological order, so the reader comes away feeling that the medical field always has been, and continues to be, very racist. Although the numerous quotations are cited, the author uses endnotes, leaving it up to the reader to check the back of the book for the date of the quote. The author may lead into a statement about medicine today with an inflammatory quote from 1914 (with the date hidden in the endnotes). Nobody can deny that America has had a bad racist past, but I have a hard time discerning from the organization of this book how bad things still are. In addition, the author is very repetitive, and disorganized with the content of the facts. The clear overarching thesis is that the medical field is racist, but within sections of the book, the theses get lost. One section that referred to psychiatry in the title (p. 158ff) then didn’t seem to talk about psychiatry at all. In a number of places the author makes assumptions that go well beyond the presented facts – and then criticizes scientists for being cautious about making similar claims. This book is a tough slog. The reader must keep her critical thinking cap firmly in place – who said, based on what data, and in what time period – and is the next quote from the same time period or from decades off? If a second edition of this book is released, with the same impressive collection of facts, overhauled into a more coherent, chronological, less-repetitive format, I recommend reading that one instead.
