The Three Failures of Creationism: Logic, Rhetoric, and Science, by Walter M. Fitch

Walter M. Fitch, a pioneer in the study of molecular evolution, has written this cogent overview of why creationism fails with respect to all the fundamentals of scientific inquiry. He explains the basics of logic and rhetoric at the heart of scientific thinking, shows what a logical syllogism is, and tells how one can detect that an argument is logically fallacious, and therefore invalid, or even duplicitous. Fitch takes his readers through the arguments used by creationists to question the science of evolution. He clearly delineates the fallacies in logic that characterize creationist thinking, and explores the basic statistics that creationists tend to ignore, including elementary genetics, the age of the Earth, and fossil dating. His book gives readers the tools they need for detecting and disassembling the ideas most frequently repeated by creationists.

From the Inside Flap
“This thoughtful book is a sophisticated baloney detector for digesting the offal that creationists try to pass off as steak. The late Walter Fitch demonstrates that the logic and language of science depart from the delusions of creationism.”--Tim M. Berra, author of /i/Charles Darwin: The Concise Story of an Extraordinary Man //i/and /i/Evolution and the Myth of Creationism//i/

"Half a century ago, the structure and logic of science was taught in science departments, but these tasks are now relegated to departments of history and philosophy of science, where scientists seldom tread. This book shows us why scientists need to learn logic from scientists, and how they can. Walter Fitch's examples range from astronomy to DNA, and he manages to show at every turn how the assumptions of anti-evolutionists and other foes of science defeat themselves. This book should be part of every science curriculum, read by all students--and their professors. Fitch has left us a masterpiece."—Kevin Padian, University of California, Berkeley

“Walter Fitch makes a strong case: Creationism violates the evidence from scientific investigations, misrepresents the interpretation of primary religious documents, utterly fails as a logical presentation, and does so in blasts of unjustified rhetoric."—Richard E. Dickerson, University of California, Los Angeles

“Into this concise book late Walter Fitch poured his commitment to explaining evolution and his conviction that an understanding of logic and of scientific methods would lead the reader to see the strengths of evolutionary biology and the deficiencies of creationism.”—Joe Felsenstein, University of Washington

Good book, but there are better ones in this niche
By David A. Rintoul
This slim volume aims to be a "pertinent introduction to the logical, philosophical, methodological, and empirical issues" that are at play in the contentious discussion between evolutionary biological scientists and creationists. It does cover all of those areas thoroughly, but it fails as an introduction, since it often wanders into examples and terminology that would befuddle those whose science background is average or below. In addition, in many places the prose simply wanders, with some paragraphs that seem only tenuously connected to the previous paragraph. For example, the section on logical fallacies, a potentially rich area of exploration in an introductory book about evolution and creationism, is sadly disorganized and even muddled. This is also true for later sections, and the casual reader would quickly lose the thread of the narrative, probably not finishing the book. There are other books which attempt to fill this niche, including Sarkar's "Doubting Darwin?" and Miller's "Only a Theory", which are excellent for introducing interested non-scientific readers to the pertinent facts and fallacies. Readers would be well advised to seek out one of those books, and scientists/educators would be well advised to recommend them, rather than this volume, to interested students. (This review is excerpted from my review in Choice, the review journal of the American Library Association.)

Worth it.

An enjoyable book, giving a scientific insight into the ongoing battles of Evolution and Creationism. Sadly, the majority of the GOP Presidential Candidates do NOT believe in Evolution.

I particularly liked the discussion of "Kitzmiller v Dover Area School District" (Supreme Court Case), and the discussion of the various proofs for the existence or non-existence of God: the Benson Study measuring the effect of intercessory prayer, the argument from design given by Dembski, Behe and others. A good handbook on how to evaluate such arguments by constructing logical syllogisms.

It also taught me a few things I didn't know about "The Epic of Gilgamesh", genetic algorithms, St. Augustine, Mendelian genetics and the "hemoglobin mechanism" -- to name just a few of the items covered.

I thought it was well worth it -- really opened up a new world for me.

You are about twenty or thirty years late on this.

When will people realize that you can never prove nor disprove the existence of god (or God) until it is too late for it to matter anyway. That is the fundamental nature of faith. It is a belief in something that cannot be proven. Nor can you disprove an entire belief system by attacking a singular components of that belief system. That's what we call a composition fallacy. That is what this book represents in the context of the larger body of literature put out by those who, like their adversaries, also hate for people to believe differently than they do.

Though perhaps not true of other faiths, most people of the Christian faith already recognize the salience of the theory of evolution. While Christianity is based upon the existence of an infallibal higher power, Christian apologists tend to recongnize fallability of the human understanding of that higher power. The fact that Christians didn't realize humans came from monkeys prior to Charles Darwin and electron microspcopes doesn't invalidate faith in a higher power. Look at it this way, science didn't realize humans came from monkeys either, and in relative terms the scientific community was nearly as slow to accept the theory. Does that invalidate science?

My intention is not to defend one side of this argument or the other, but to point out the futility of the broader argument and identify that the proximate argument of the book is a moot point. Evolution... good, we got it, science was right (after it was wrong a few hundred times and before it is wrong again another few hundred times). Are we still talking about this?
