Broadly labeled yokai, these creatures come in infinite shapes and sizes, from tengu mountain goblins and kappa water spirits to shape-shifting foxes and long-tongued ceiling-lickers. Currently popular in anime, manga, film, and computer games, many yokai originated in local legends, folktales, and regional ghost stories.
Drawing on years of research in Japan, Michael Dylan Foster unpacks the history and cultural context of yokai, tracing their roots, interpreting their meanings, and introducing people who have hunted them through the ages. From the Inside Flap
"Overflowing with great stories of Japan’s fantastical monsters, spirits, and other creatures of the collective imagination, The Book of Yokai is filled with solid information, a variety of new perspectives, and the kind of richness of detail that will enhance any reader’s enjoyment of Japan’s monstrous folk traditions."Dr. Bill Tsutsui, President of Hendrix College and author of Godzilla on My Mind
"Foster's yokai are living beings, real in their own way: they migrate from the woods and ponds of rural prefectures to books, games, anime, and the toy stores of Tokyo. Exactly what I was looking for!
By Natasha M. Heck
I've been doing my best to find research on yokai for over five years. The book explains the progression of yokai folklore in Japanese culture before introducing us to them, which was proved helpful. It breaks down the progression and changes of their impact over the ages. It's more than simply telling us about the different yokai, but understanding why yokai exist.

Highly recommended!
By Jack Daw
The first book of its kind: detailed, thoughtful, academic and based on extensive research but still easy to read and accessible to non-experts. Really gives you as sense of the variety of yokai, their history, and the ideas surrounding them. There are about thirty or more images, but it is not a picture book (if you just want pictures, there are plenty available on the Internet).

Great book, full of monsters
By Jessica Thomas
Great book, full of monsters, scary and not so much. You can pretty much pick up the book at any point and look through it. As an artist I really enjoy the descriptions as well as the myth's or stories that are prescribed to each entity that is in this book.
