Mark Twain: The Adventures of Samuel L. Clemens, by Jerome Loving

Mark Twain, who was often photographed with a cigar, once remarked that he came into the world looking for a light. In this new biography, published on the centennial of the writer’s death, Jerome Loving focuses on Mark Twain, humorist and quipster, and sheds new light on the wit, pathos, and tragedy of the author of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In brisk and compelling fashion, Loving follows Twain from Hannibal to Hawaii to the Holy Land, showing how the southerner transformed himself into a westerner and finally a New Englander. This re-examination of Twain’s life is informed by newly discovered archival materials that provide the most complex view of the man and writer to date.

From Publishers Weekly
In the latest volume for the centennial of Twain's death, Loving (Walt Whitman: Song of Himself) serves up a balanced literary biography of a crowded life—to renew our acquaintance with this familiar stranger in our literature and culture. Many of the best chapters include sensitive appraisals of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson, and the anonymously published Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, with The Adventures of Tom Sawyer put in a different context as possibly the most overrated work of American fiction when considered as adult literature. In fact, this Mark Twain flows with the easy familiarity of a scholar who has spent a lifetime tracking 19th-century American literature. Of certain interest is the discussion, at various points, of Twain's complex views on blacks and slavery, Native Americans, the Chinese, and—particularly from the standpoint of his home in fin-de-siècle Vienna—on Jews. If this biography of Clemens's many adventures fails to delve psychologically into the writer's family and other relationships, it is a solid contribution to literary interpretation of the man who infused American literature with what has been called tragic laughter. 37 b&w photos. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Because he is surveying Twain’s entire career, Loving covers the same ground that Morris does. Yet he does so with a fresh interpretive perspective: readers see how Twain first finds his imaginative posture as a travel writer and then adapts that posture in all his later books. The restless eye of Innocents Abroad and Roughing It is still a roving witness—albeit a more artistically informed one—in Huckleberry Finn and The Gilded Age. Perceptive analysis clarifies why Twain resolves his perplexities—literary, familial, and financial—by uprooting himself and moving on, his mobile perspective ultimately reflecting the restive soul of a still-immature nation. Readers marvel both at how Twain’s ever-shifting imagination melds comedy with tragedy in potent synthesis and at how the author’s unpredictable trajectory puts him in association with diverse figures, including Union hero U. S. Grant and southern favorite Joel Chandler Harris. Though Loving offers a view of Twain’s last years much darker than Shelden’s, readers will value this portrait of a peripatetic genius traversing a wide swath of American culture. --Bryce Christensen

A very tedious book
By webwiz99
It is so detailed in relating every little bit of Twain's life to some
character or incident in his writings that one cannot "get on" with the
narrative. Unless you recall every detail of Twain's writings, these
references mean little and the whole is like working your way through a
long recipe.

Very well researched, but boring....

Exellent job of research, but boring to the point that I could not get into this without skipping around. Some wonderful passages but overall, I much preferred Lighting Out for the Territory....

Good but not quite there
By Tad Davis
Loving's biography of Twain is compact, well-structured, and briskly paced. Some of the documentation is previously unknown material from the Twain archives. It also includes many astute observations on the writing. That said, I was disappointed: it captures the facts in a readable form, but Loving doesn't really seem to "get" Mark Twain. It's a biography from the outside in.

There are gaps also in the description of Twain's last years. This may be partly due to Loving's contention that while Samuel Clemens lived for a few more years, "Mark Twain" died when he buried his wife Livy. The Angelfish are relegated to a footnote. There is little here about Stormfield or the frequent trips to Bermuda. (He does, however, give a fair summary of Isobel Lyon's sad career with the man she called "the King.")

On the whole I'd have to say I preferred Ron Powers' biography, although Powers makes the same mistake of thinking Twain's last years are somehow less interesting. Michael Shelden's book "Mark Twain: Man in White" is a useful corrective to this attitude.

Go West, Young Women!: The Rise of Early Hollywood, by Hilary Hallett

In the early part of the twentieth century, migrants made their way from rural homes to cities in record numbers and many traveled west. Los Angeles became a destination. Women flocked to the growing town to join the film industry as workers and spectators, creating a “New Woman.” Their efforts transformed filmmaking from a marginal business to a cosmopolitan, glamorous, and bohemian one. By 1920, Los Angeles had become the only western city where women outnumbered men. In Go West, Young Women, Hilary A. Hallett explores these relatively unknown new western women and their role in the development of Los Angeles and the nascent film industry. From Mary Pickford’s rise to become perhaps the most powerful woman of her age, to the racist moral panics of the post–World War I years that culminated in Hollywood’s first sex scandal, Hallett describes how the path through early Hollywood presaged the struggles over modern gender roles that animated the century to come.

Review
"Don't miss Go West, Young Women!"--"The Huffington Post"

"A lively look at Hollywood's past, when the movies were still in their infancy, and at the women who were a critical part of it. . . . Highly recommended."--G. A. Foster"Choice" (04/19/2013)

A lively look at Hollywood s past, when the movies were still in their infancy, and at the women who were a critical part of it. . . . Highly recommended. --G. A. Foster"Choice" (04/19/2013)"

From the Inside Flap
"An outstanding and well-researched work, Go West, Young Women! adds a fresh interpretive framework to the study of women in early Hollywood. Each chapter is a jewel; Hilary A. Hallett's lively writing is perfectly matched to her unique re-reading of the female role in early cinema." —Lary May, Morse Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities

“Here is a surprising look at a great westward migration—the steady stream of star-struck and hard-working young women who followed the movie industry into Southern California. Hilary A. Hallett’s smart book changes our thinking about the writers, directors, producers, designers, artists, and actresses who shook off old conventions, created Hollywood, and ushered in the twentieth century." —Ann Fabian, author of The Skull Collectors: Race, Science and America's Unburied Dead

“An outstanding and path-breaking work of scholarship that re-reads the role of women in Hollywood as part of broader U.S. social and cultural history. This work is exemplary of the historian’s art: to go deeply and broadly into primary sources, original documents, and ephemeral materials in order to paint a fresh picture and tell a different story.” —Robert Sklar, author of Movie-Made America: A Cultural History of American Movies

“Hilary A. Hallet provides an exceptional history of women in early Hollywood, moving them once and for all from the margins to the center. Engagingly written and meticulously researched, Go West, Young Women! is essential reading for anyone interested in the beginnings of the American movie industry, celebrity culture, and histories of women in the western US.” —Shelley Stamp, author of Movie-Struck Girls: Women and Motion Picture Culture after the Nickelodeon

"Bold and fresh, Hilary Hallett’s study demonstrates that the history of women, female sexuality, and mass culture is not a closed case. Important as the first feminist examination of the 1921 Fatty Arbuckle scandal, this book radically revises ideas of the post-World War I Hollywood industry as well as cultural histories of the time. By looking at the underside of the 1920s in a way never dared before, Hallett further reconfigures our understanding of motion picture censorship in the 1930s." —Jane M. Gaines, Professor of Film, Columbia University

“Hilary Hallett vividly captures the magnetic appeal of Hollywood for the many young women in the early film industry. With a knack for translating theoretical issues into memorable practical form, Hallett offers colorful stories and reconstructs the cultural history of an industry experiencing incredible upheaval and growth. Early Hollywood will never look the same again.” —Jackson Lears, author of Rebirth of a Nation: The Making of Modern America, 1877–1920

Worthy addition to the film and women's history bookshelves
By Catmommie
In Go West, Young Women! Hilary A. Hallett takes a closer look at the women who migrated to Los Angeles in the teens and twenties to work in the early film industry, and the women who consumed the increasingly glamorous products the industry created for them. Hallett makes excellent use of business, labor, and demographics statistics to show that nearly 75% of Hollywood's product was made for women, and nearly all film secondary industries, such as fan magazines, were aimed at the female consumer. Women were employed in the film industry in larger numbers and at higher wages than were the norm in other industries, from the storied female producers, directors, and actresses such as Mary Pickford, Clara Kimball Young, and Norma Talmadge, to women working behind the scenes as editors, writers, designers, and in other capacities.

Hallett also examines the bipolar social attitudes toward these New Women--attitudes that are still thick on the ground today--from the positive views of Pickford, Talmadge, Pearl White, and others, to the overwhelmingly negative views of the woman at the center of Hollywood's first sex scandal, Virginia Rappe. Hallett again makes excellent use of primary source materials from the Arbuckle-Rappe scandal to pointedly criticize the view of Rappe as a disease-ridden trollop who deserved what she got. This reviewer has no problem with that.

Now for the quibble section of the review: although Hallett is correct in her depiction of the contemporary and current spin on the scandal, she does make factual mistakes about Virginia Rappe and other people involved in the scandal that, while not germane to her thesis, were careless and easily avoided. Hallett is also far more diplomatic than I'd be, burying this critical statement in a note instead of in the first chapter:

"I found no transcript for any of the following three trials. The first biography interested in clearing the comedian's name was David Yallop's. Yallop claims to have obtained copies of the transcripts, but in comparing his use to the one in my possession, I found that he misrepresents the dialogue. Two other popular biographies display similar tendencies: Andy Edmonds's...Stuart Oderman's...[Robert] Young also presents a similar portrait of Rappe, relying on Yallop whom he otherwise criticizes, and on an oral history by Arbuckle's wife. When I asked Young about the evidence he used for his portrait of Rappe, his reply demonstrated his absorption of such assumptions himself."

Although the book is dense and information rich, it's engagingly written; thankfully Hallett has eschewed academese. Go West, Young Women! is a welcome addition to the film and women's history bookshelves.

My Name Is Jody Williams: A Vermont Girl's Winding Path to the Nobel Peace Prize, by Jody Williams

As Eve Ensler says in her inspired foreword to this book, “Jody Williams is many things—a simple girl from Vermont, a sister of a disabled brother, a loving wife, an intense character full of fury and mischief, a great strategist, an excellent organizer, a brave and relentless advocate, and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. But to me Jody Williams is, first and foremost, an activist.”

From her modest beginnings to becoming the tenth woman—and third American woman—to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Jody Williams takes the reader through the ups and downs of her tumultuous and remarkable life. In a voice that is at once candid, straightforward, and intimate, Williams describes her Catholic roots, her first step on a long road to standing up to bullies with the defense of her deaf brother Stephen, her transformation from good girl to college hippie at the University of Vermont, and her protest of the war in Vietnam. She relates how, in 1981, she began her lifelong dedication to global activism as she battled to stop the U.S.-backed war in El Salvador.

Throughout the memoir, Williams underlines her belief that an “average woman”—through perseverance, courage and imagination—can make something extraordinary happen. She tells how, when asked if she’d start a campaign to ban and clear anti-personnel mines, she took up the challenge, and the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) was born. Her engrossing account of the genesis and evolution of the campaign, culminating in 1997 with the Nobel Peace Prize, vividly demonstrates how one woman’s commitment to freedom, self-determination, and human rights can have a profound impact on people all over the globe.

Review
"Williams' work ably demonstrates how a single person can make a great difference."--"Kirkus Reviews "

From the Inside Flap
“Jody Williams is a grassroots activist at her heart, committed to empowering all individuals to believe in their ability and their right to contribute to a better world. A forceful leader in advancing the recognition of the key role of ‘citizen diplomacy’ in confronting and resolving our common challenges in today's fast changing world. Whether she's speaking or writing, she is clear, concise and eloquent when advancing her views of global activism.”—Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate

“Jody Williams is an activist's activist—she speaks to and for ordinary people, inspiring and empowering them to speak for themselves. Her eloquence also reaches and moves those in the halls of power around the world. Her written word is as clear and convincing as the words she speaks. What she says and what she does have long been demonstrating that global change is not a utopian dream but feasible reality.”—Mia Farrow, actor and activist

“Jody Williams is a bold, informed, challenging and provocative voice. Her writing is shaped by a sharp political eye, heart, humor and irreverence. Her place in the dialogue around building peace and justice cannot be disputed. She is, quite simply, explosive."—Eve Ensler, author, actor, activist

“Jody Williams is a powerful woman. When she speaks, she carries the room. When she writes, she is equally as clear and captivating. What might be the best thing about her—whether she's speaking or writing—is that she shares her power. She is tireless in her work for a better world for us all. She engages through humor and humility and makes anyone who comes in contact with her believe that they too can change the world.”—Pat Mitchell, CEO, the Paley Center; former CEO, PBS

“To hear Jody Williams speak at a rally of thousands is to be electrified by the vision, wit and strength of a woman who can seem superhuman. To read Jody Williams on the page is to gain entry into the mind of the complicated, all-too-human-woman whose self-doubts and vulnerability make her one of us. Williams writes with a novelist's gift for careful observation, and a humorist's knack for scathing self-examination. Her bawdy, kick-boxing prose leaves no doubt that as a writer-activist, Williams has a voice of her own.”—Audrey Wells, screenwriter, director, activist

Superb!
By Boonie
Jody succeeds in telling her story in such a personal way allowing the reader to truly join in on her journey to activism and eventually the Nobel Peace Prize…

I found myself cheering her on even though I already knew how her story would end regarding the landmine campaign. She comes across as humble yet strong, and even quite humorous in the midst of the political side of her story. Extremely well done.

I couldn't put it down
By Beatrice Spates
With humor and candor, Jody Williams tells the story of her life up until she and the ICBL were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997. To me, her book was almost like a thriller - I could barely put it down! She has indeed led a fascinating life, helped and inspired so many, and epitomizes the change that one person can bring about. It's a great read!

The Making of a Peaceful Warrior
By Patricia Gras
Two years ago, I was working on a television show about the increasing violence against women around the world for Houston PBS. For years, I had been trying to interview Jody Williams, the 1997 Nobel Peace Laureate who had led the international campaign to ban land mines. As a Professor at the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Houston, she conducts lectures here twice a year.
When I finally got a hold of her, she was surprised I had not reached her before. I thought she had avoided my requests because of her celebrity status. I was wrong. She was one of the most kind, authentic, and humble people I had ever met.
I have interviewed admirable people in my lifetime, Desmond Tutu, Jimmy Carter, Dominique De Menil, Alice Walker, met Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, and other lesser-known human rights activists, but Williams truly surprised me. Like all of them, she is dedicated and fearless, but when you are around her, you feel like she could be your next-door neighbor who you can trust with your children. She has no airs whatsoever. She is not afraid to speak her mind, nor does she mince her words. To me she is a modern day grassroots peaceful warrior. What you see is what you get.
When her book "My Name is Jody Williams: A Vermont Girls Winding Path to the Nobel Peace Prize came out, I quickly got a copy and I was not disappointed. I got to meet Williams at a more personal level in January of 2012. I was invited to be part of her delegation of the
Nobel Women's Initiative (which she leads with all the women laureates) and Just Associates (JASS) on a fact-finding mission. The goal was to hear from women confronting violence in Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala. We were to investigate the impact of the war on drugs and increased mining operations on the lives of women.
According to the report released in June of 2012 on that mission.
"The delegation found that violence against women is reaching crisis dimensions in Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala. In the last decade, femicides have risen by alarming rates - as much as 257% in Honduras. Indigenous women and women human rights defenders are particularly vulnerable to attacks, which include rape, torture, murder, and forced disappearances."
On that trip, Williams was focused, passionate, quietly driven to get answers and empowering the women we heard. Most had suffered atrocious violence. I believed she helped them find their own voice, with her compassion, knowledge and assurance something would be done.
I didn't know much about her personal life until I read the book. She was raised in Vermont with a very close and modest Catholic family and early on, discovered her own activist soul by chance.
The turning point came when she was handed a flyer about the Salvadoran war and the US role in it.
The following years, she spent time in Central America for different causes, generally helping the forgotten victims of violence and war.
In her memoir, and with great candor she shares her family's ordeal with her mentally ill brother, a failed marriage with her high school sweetheart, her frustration with the US Governments' role in the Vietnam and Central American conflicts and her ultimate as she sees it, "average America girl" response through social justice activism.
In a very easy to read and conversational style we also learn about her rape by a Salvadoran Death Squad member, her roller coaster love life and how she ended up working to ban landmines.
It happened unexpectedly in 1991, when she met executive director Bobby Muller of the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation who along with Thomas Gebauer of Medico International, a German Humanitarian organization felt "she was the right person to build a political movement to ban landmines. "They just knew I was going to be able to bring together non governmental organizations to put sustained pressure on governments to make them get rid of the weapons forever."She said and they were right.
The next few years she would dedicate her life, passion and determination to ban landmines, while learning everything she could about international law and surrounding herself with activists around the world with the same goals and perseverance. She was awarded the Nobel Prize along with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines in 1997.
Williams paid a lot of personal prizes for her activism, but she reminds us peace is not something you just imagine, or just talk and sing about. It is something you fight for. To understand peace, she says you must understand the causes of war. "Human security requires directing our resources toward providing for the basic needs of human beings so they are secure in their daily lives." She reminds us peace is not for the faint of heart." You have to fight for it! She has certainly proved that in how she has lived her life and how she continues her relentless pursuit of justice wherever she goes.

Teardown: Memoir of a Vanishing City, by Gordon Young

After living in San Francisco for 15 years, journalist Gordon Young found himself yearning for his Rust Belt hometown: Flint, Michigan, the birthplace of General Motors and “star” of the Michael Moore documentary Roger & Me. Hoping to rediscover and help a place that once boasted one of the world’s highest per capita income levels, but is now one of the country's most impoverished and dangerous cities, he returned to Flint with the intention of buying a house. What he found was a place of stark contrasts and dramatic stories, where an exotic dancer can afford a lavish mansion, speculators scoop up cheap houses by the dozen on eBay, and arson is often the quickest route to neighborhood beautification.

Skillfully blending personal memoir, historical inquiry, and interviews with Flint residents, Young constructs a vibrant tale of a once-thriving city still fighting—despite overwhelming odds—to rise from the ashes. He befriends a rag-tag collection of urban homesteaders and die-hard locals who refuse to give up as they try to transform Flint into a smaller, greener town that offers lessons for cities all over the world. Hard-hitting, insightful, and often painfully funny, Teardown reminds us that cities are ultimately defined by people, not politics or economics.

From Booklist
Fifteen years into his life in San Francisco, journalist Young and his wife finally bought a small house that provoked in him nostalgia for the sense of belonging he had growing up in Flint, Michigan. Should they trade their overpriced home for better bargains available in hard-pressed Flint and make a major contribution to a struggling city? Inspired by a blog he started for Flint expatriates, Young spent two summers indulging his nostalgia and seriously considering a return to the birthplace of General Motors and subject of Michael Moore’s documentary, Roger & Me. He meets real-estate speculators, hearty urban pioneers, politicians, and city planners pushing the idea of shrinking cities like Flint that have suffered deindustrialization and depopulation. Beyond the harrowing facts of staggering crime and diminishing services, Young saw a city fighting mightily to reclaim its glory days as a solid, middle-class town. Young compares youthful memories of Catholic schooling and free swimming lessons to the grim present of abandoned houses and shuttered schools in this poignant, often funny look at an iconic Rust Belt city struggling to recover. --Vanessa Bush

Review
"A journalist living in San Francisco decides to move back to decrepit Flint, Mich., where he was born and raised. . . . It matters because: As cities like Flint go, so goes much of the nation. Perfect for: The amateur urbanist who wants to go to Flint without actually having to leave the backyard."--Alexander Nazaryan"Atlantic Wire" (06/12/2013)

"A poignant, often funny look at an iconic Rust Belt city struggling to recover."--Vanessa Bush"Booklist" (07/01/2013)

"Teardown is a story, readable and affecting, sad and funny, animated by human impulse and the American preoccupation with real estate values . . . it is a remarkably intereting read that is likely to resonate with anyone who has ever left home."--Philip Martin"Arkansas Democrat Gazette" (06/16/2013)

"Young has written this love poem to his arson-prone, deindustrialized hometown and its impoverished and traumatized citizenry using a snappy yet journalistically skeptical style. . . . Even casual readers who have no experience with Rust Belt cities or real estate investment will find Teardown compelling and worth their attention."--Jim Schulman"Washington Independent Review of Books" (07/26/2013)

"The style of Teardown is Rolling-Stone-style journalism, relatively informal, strongly first person, loosely organized. But there is modern history, too, and wide-ranging inquiry into economics and (especially) politics. The strongest narrative interest, though, springs from Gordon s contacts with Flintites old and new, people doing what he is contemplating."--Randall Mawer"Lost Coast Review" (08/03/2013)"

"While scholars and urban planners throughout the US and Europe debate strategies for revitalising former industrial cities that are shrinking, forgotten or failing, Young reminds us that storytelling, including the kind of inconclusive ending we might find in a contemporary novel, sometimes reveals more than the most careful study can. Better yet, a good story shows us why we should care, even if it doesn t provide any solutions."--Sherry Lee Linkon"Times Higher Education" (10/31/2013)"

"One does not have to be from Flint to appreciate this book."--Stephen High"Middle West Review" (04/01/2015)

From the Inside Flap
"One can read Teardown and go 'My, my, my! What a horrid town! Thank God I don't live there!' Oh, but you do. Just as the Roger & Me Flint of the 1980s was the precursor to a wave of downsizing that eventually hit every American community, Gordon Young's Flint of 2013, so profoundly depicted in this book, is your latest warning of what's in store for you—all of you, no matter where you live—in the next decade. The only difference between your town and Flint is that the Grim Reaper just likes to visit us first. It's all here in Teardown, a brilliant chronicle of the Mad Maxization of a once-great American city."—Michael Moore

"There must be a thousand good reasons to flee Flint. I can't assume there are many reasons to return. Gordon Young's Teardown supplies a few of these answers. A humorous, heartfelt and often haunting tale of a town not many could love. Fortunately for us, a few still do."—Ben Hamper, author of Rivethead: Tales from the Assembly Line

"Teardown is the tragic and somehow hilarious tale of one man's attempt to return to his hometown. Gordon Young is a Flintoid at heart and his candid observations about both the shrinking city and his own economic woes read heartbreakingly true."—Novella Carpenter, author of Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer

"Teardown is a funny and ultimately heartbreaking memoir. The travails of house hunting are skillfully interwoven with Young's attempt to reconcile life in his adopted city of San Francisco with his allegiance to Flint, the troubled city of his childhood. The result is an all too contemporary American story of loyalty, loss and finding your way home."—Tom Pohrt, illustrator and author of Careless Rambles by John Clare

"Like so many other Flintites, I visit my hometown with a mix of sadness, repugnance and anger. Yet the man I have become, the life I lead, and the dreams I carry were all born in Flint, and Flint remains in my heart. We only knew it as home—as a place to learn, love and live. Flint is too easy to criticize, but I look back in gratitude for the values Flint instilled, the education I received and the bonds I made that remain with me to this day. You can take the boy out of Flint, but you can't take Flint out of the boy."—Howard Bragman, author of Where's My Fifteen Minutes?

"Armed with an aluminum baseball bat and a truth-seeking pen, Young returns to the post-industrial wasteland of his hometown in search of a derelict house to buy and restore. At least that's his cover story. Young's true mission is to reclaim his past is order to make sense of his present. If you're bewitched by the place where you grew up, you'll find comfort and a sense of home in the pages of Teardown."—Jack Shafer, Reuters columnist and a former Michigander

"This beautifully written tale of Gordon Young's homecoming offers an unforgettable journey to the heart of one of America's most compelling places."—Frank J. Popper, Rutgers University

Flint -- its crisis and its promise -- explained as never before.
By Connor Coyne
I can think of two types of person that might enjoy this book. People who don't live in Flint and want to understand the place, and people who do live in Flint and want to understand how people on the outside see our fair city. Author Gordon Young is part of an increasing number of people that fall into both camps; he grew up in Flint and, like so many Flintstones, left the place for greener pastures.

Now a San Francisco journalist, Young is best known in Flint for his Flint Expatriates blog. It's an extensive, wide-ranging, and evocative collection of anecdotes, archive, history, and armchair analysis, and many of us have been hoping for years that Young would share his own observations in a full-fledged book.

Teardown: Memoir of a Vanishing City does not disappoint.

The book is a memoir, following Young's personal quest to buy a house in his hometown, fueled in large part by fond and complicated memories of his own childhood there.

Despite his extensive blogging, Young is surprised by a Flint that has changed drastically in the almost thirty years since he left. Budget shortfalls and public safety cuts coincide with skyrocketing crime. Many blocks are filled with abandoned houses, and hundreds burn down in arson sprees. Defiant homeowners in Carriage Town pump many times their house's value into renovation, while equally determined holdouts in the impoverished Civic Park neighborhood fight to keep a single block from falling into decay. The city is in crisis, and has been for decades. Most of Flint's residents live in a perpetual state of damage control as one calamity follows another.

Now I should pause for a moment, because the above paragraph could really describe any number of accounts of Flint.

Ben Hamper's Rivethead, written in the midst of decline, well conveys the sense of a town's psychological disintegration. Various academic studies portray depopulation and poverty in stark numbers. The Flint Journal and many others have provided illuminating histories of Flint, enhanced by photos and primary sources. And Michael Moore's "Roger and Me," released in 1989, still expresses abandonment vividly (even if the number of abandoned homes has since multiplied many times). So in several ways, Young is operating on well-trod territory.

Here is why Teardown is unique among all the others:

Despite being framed by the very personal narrative of Young's home-buying quest and his own memories, Teardown is by far the most balanced and circumspect encounter with Flint that the world-at-large is likely to get.

First, among the characters he encounters -- from well-connected politicians, to frustrated homeowners, to a determined clergy, to young parents trying to make a fresh start in the midst of entrenched policy, everyone is given a moment to speak, and their views are presented eloquently and sympathetically. So when would-be town-downsizer Dan Kildee encounters an Eastside resident on Jane Street (where Kildee's own family had once lived), the man says, "somebody needs to fix these houses up, not just let them fall down!" '"Fix them up!" he yelled without looking back, pointing into the air for emphasis as he waded into the shadows.'

Young allows his characters dignity in their crises; the very element missing from Forbes' "worst cities" lists, and uniting Flint's citizens despite their many issues and disagreements.

Second, following even deeper veins, Young manages to capture the paradoxical current of both hope and despair so many express about life in Flint. Other accounts have hinted at this contradiction, but none have ever come so far in bringing it to life.

"It's impossible to spin, sugarcoat, or sanitize Flint's fate," he writes toward the end of Teardown. "Flint demands mental compartmentalization, the ability to absorb bad news while simultaneously ferreting out encouraging signs." And so his quest begins with Rich, a California real-estate agent who happily jeopardizes his own finances by buying up houses in Flint, under logic that seems increasingly shaky as time goes by. Michael and Dave and Judy and Jan and Sherman all look to the future with a feverish determination that could be called impassioned, even if it is not optimistic. And Young himself, drawn back toward the neighborhood where he grew up, and discovering it blighted and empty, is encouraged in his search by the sight of a faded mural his sister had painted decades before. All the while, bad things keep happening: serial homicide, arson, falling revenue, and failing services. Flint is a desperate place, and a weird place, but it is a place that somehow draws intense loyalty and even obsession from those who live there by choice and necessity. Young has expressed this contradiction in a way that no one else has.

Teardown is a couple hundred pages long, but with short chapters and focused episodes, it's also a quick read. In many ways, Flint is a small town; Flintstones reading Teardown will recognize many characters (Disclaimer: Indeed, a neighbor of mine features, and is part of the reason I was asked to read and comment on an early manuscript of the book), but the anonymous characters are just as compelling, in some cases appearing naked and threatening, or in others simply asking obvious and unanswerable questions. One man, arriving unannounced at the mayor's office, simply says: "I've given up on Flint, and I wanted to see if he could give me a reason not to give up on it."

Considering all this, you should read Teardown.

That is:

If you don't live in Flint and want to understand the place, then read it.

If you do live in Flint and want to understand how people on the outside see Flint, then read it.

And if you don't know a thing about Flint, and don't know why so many words and thoughts would be spent on a place filled with such evident misery, you should read it too. We all confront crises in our lives, and accounts of the confrontation of crises are both universal and timeless.

A Love Letter
By blueskyjen
My girlfriends and I who have moved away from Flint, always joke that you can take the girl out of Flint, but you can never take the Flint out of the girl. We like to think we are somehow connected to the place we left. This wonderful, meandering, insightful book explains every reason why. It explains why I left, why I get so homesick, and why it will always be home, even if there is no home in the city limits left to visit. It's funny. It's sad. It is so much more than a story about Flint, Michigan. It's a history lesson. It's about industrialization, the housing collapse and an introductory to Urban Planning in the 21st Century. And, it's a love letter. It is far from the usual song and dance about Flint and how awful a place it must be. It maintains the integrity of the great people of Flint but also shows what poverty, desperation and ignorance can do to a city over three decades. Gordon Young, you did good.

"It's not OK for things to be this way."
By Dr Jim
I haven't thought about Flint this way since Michael Moore's Roger and Me. While Moore's movie was a first warning shot on the effects of globalization, it was also Moore's escape from Flint.

The opposite is true in Tear Down, here we have the author arriving back in Flint many years after he has moved away and made a name for himself. Still the messages are similar, which are well crafted, thought provoking looks at the effects of GM's exodus from my hometown of Flint, Michigan.

The plot has Gordon Young, a former Flintoid arriving back in his hometown via San Francisco armed with a mission to giveback to his city in some way and rediscover his roots. The narrative takes you deep inside the story with an insider/outsider approach that adds depth to his observations. Young now must face some hard realities while trying to follow through on his goal.

Tear Down is packed with excellent research, descriptive profiles and vivid detail. In short, this book knocked me out and perhaps is a last warning shot to all of America on the high cost of globalization.

Ecology, Conservation, and Management of Grouse (Studies in Avian Biology)From University of California Press

Grouse—an ecologically important group of birds that include capercaillie, prairie chickens, and ptarmigan—are distributed throughout the forests, grasslands, and tundra of Europe, Asia, and North America. Today, many grouse populations are in decline, and the conservation and management of these charismatic birds is becoming a global concern. This volume summarizes current knowledge of grouse biology in 25 chapters contributed by 80 researchers from field studies around the world. Organized in four sections—Spatial Ecology, Habitat Relationships, Population Biology, and Conservation and Management—the chapters offer important insights into spatial requirements, movements, and demography of grouse. Much of the research employs emerging tools in ecology that span biogeochemistry, molecular genetics, endocrinology, radio-telemetry, and remote sensing. The chapters explore topics including the impacts of climate change, energy development, and harvest, and give new evidence for life-history changes in response to human activities.

“The grouse of the northern hemisphere have been bellwether agents for population ecology and conservation. This book will help bring our knowledge of these birds together both to increase our ecological understanding of grouse and to improve our conservation efforts for these birds.”--Charles J. Krebs, Professor Emeritus of Zoology, University of British Columbia

"A marvelous feast of field studies, especially for researchers working with dwindling and threatened populations, focusing on habitat relationships and population biology. This book is a sumptuous meal for avian researchers.”--Paul Johnsgard, Professor Emeritus, University of Nebraska-Lincoln and author of Grassland Grouse and their Conservation

"This volume is exciting from the perspective of a grouse biologist but also from a more general ecological perspective. It provides an excellent synthesis of the ecology and conservation of these fascinating and beautiful inhabitants and their ecosystems, which are as diverse as tundra, forest, and grassland."--Hans Christian Pedersen, Professor and Senior Scientist, Norwegian Institute for Nature Research.

Jazz/Not Jazz: The Music and Its BoundariesFrom University of California Press

What is jazz? What is gained—and what is lost—when various communities close ranks around a particular definition of this quintessentially American music? Jazz/Not Jazz explores some of the musicians, concepts, places, and practices which, while deeply connected to established jazz institutions and aesthetics, have rarely appeared in traditional histories of the form. David Ake, Charles Hiroshi Garrett, and Daniel Goldmark have assembled a stellar group of writers to look beyond the canon of acknowledged jazz greats and address some of the big questions facing jazz today. More than just a history of jazz and its performers, this collections seeks out those people and pieces missing from the established narratives to explore what they can tell us about the way jazz has been defined and its history has been told.

Reading between the Wines, by Terry Theise

Acclaimed importer and wine guru Terry Theise, long known for his top-notch portfolio and his illustrious writing, now offers this opinionated, idiosyncratic, and beautifully written testament to wine. What constitutes beauty in wine, and how do we appreciate it? What role does wine play in a soulful, sensual life? Can wines of place survive in a world of globalized styles and 100-point scoring systems? In his highly approachable style, Theise describes how wine can be a portal to aesthetic, emotional, even mystical experience—and he frankly asserts that these experiences are most likely to be inspired by wines from artisan producers.

From the Inside Flap
"There is only one reason that the American wine enthusiast is now completely enamored with German and Austrian wines: Terry Theise! This glorious book not only brilliantly showcases one man's love affair with all the beauties that can flow from the bottle, it definitively makes the case for the wines that are the most superbly suited to be served with food."—Chef Charlie Trotter

"Terry Theise's humane, subtle and engaging book illustrates the superiority of wisdom to mere knowledge. Read and be richer."—Andrew Jefford, columnist for Decanter and The World of Fine Wine

"Impassioned, insistent, and inimitable, Terry Theise is America's foremost wine philosopher. Lots of writers can explain the "what" of wine. Terry, uniquely, inspires us with the 'why'. I devoured Reading Between the Wines; it's the single best book I've ever read on why wine matters."—Karen MacNeil, author of The Wine Bible

"If you think you know something about wine, try Terry Theise's Reading Between the Wines because until you do, you haven't really started."—Tom Stevenson, author of Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia

A necessity on a wine lover's shelves
By Katie Pizzuto
Any man who quotes Anaïs Nin in a book about wine automatically gets bonus Gonzo points from me, and if in same said book he's got wordplay with Blue Öyster Cult lyrics, well I develop a crush that tends to sway me to overlook the fact that I needed to keep a dictionary handy while reading his book, because I've simply never had cause to use words like ecumenical or pusillanimous. Terry Theise, iconic importer and rock star wannabe, will be the first to tell you that "there's a lot of lousy prose and shallow thinking out there" in the world of wine writing, but his is as far removed from that sad description as wine writing can possibly get, and I'm thankful for it.

My bookshelves are burdened down with tomes about wine. They're bowed with the weight of books given biblical status for their wealth of information and books that serve as little more than romantic memoirs about wine-soaked lives. But there are very few--in fact only one other I can think of besides this, Nossiter's "Liquid Memory"--that exist as visceral dissertations on what wine does...move us. Theise's new book speaks of wine having the capability of being a portal to the mystic, and his conviction to this end is utterly seductive. There were points when I found myself reading his proselytizing out on my deck well past twilight, sometimes laughing out loud, sometimes nodding in passionate agreement, and other times lost in his candor. It's no small coincidence that Terry describes taking wine-tasting notes as often being obtrusive when you are engaged in what you've just experienced, because I felt the same about trying to take notes while reading this book--"it's like ignoring a rainbow so you can balance your checkbook."

Theise's argument for terroir is impeccable, and one that I imagine would convince even the most hardened New Worlders to bend with the breeze, if only because his argument is sound...logical...clear. He manages to straddle the murky fault line between spirit and substance--between ethos, pathos and logos--and he manages to do it while jibing you about Chateau Bluebols at the same time. I imagine Terry to be the kind of guy that makes you feel like a complete idiot for being lulled into complacency by the gears of the wine industry, and then consoles you as you lick your wounds by offering you a glass of the most delicate, mind-blowing riesling you've ever let pass your lips. For the limited amount of time we have in our lives to imbibe, it begs the question, why drink what doesn't move you? Why drink the enological equivalent of white noise? His rhetoric is both compelling and convincing.

I have but one gripe with Reading Between the Wines and that is its forced linearity for a style of writing that is otherwise so intrinsically organic. It's like taking an e.e. cummings poem, dissecting it and cramming that dissection into an eighth-grade lit class outline. At times, Terry's views were broken down into a sort of laundry list, and that sacrificed some of the book's "naturalness" in my opinion, but that's probably also partly me being a pain in the ass after one too many glasses of nowhere wine. In all honesty, when I read his description of a red Burgundy, "If truffles had orgasms, they might emit this fragrance" I'm nearly certain my schoolgirl crush kicked in, and I probably just started looking for any reason to find flaw with Theise so that the spell would be broken. "Reading Between the Wines" is easily the most passionate, poetic, and necessary book on wine I've ever read, and it ended all way too soon.

Full of insights, but occasionally over the top
By Chambolle
Here we have yet another in a growing library of recent books that delve into the heart and soul of wine and ask the Big Questions. Why does wine matter? Why does terroir matter? Who gives a damn about "scoring" wine? Are there universal and absolute measures of "quality," or is a simple and honest bottle of cool, crisp rose, slurped with good ham, ripe melon and a fresh baguette on a hot summer day as "great" in its own way as a bottle of 1990 La Tache, sipped reverently on a grand occasion? Is Robert Parker The Devil, or just a guy with his own quirky palate who has been misunderstood and misused by armies of newbies hungry for easy answers to the questions "what wine should I buy" and "what wine am I supposed to like"?

Terry Theise has got his chops down, no doubt about it. He sure as heck knows German and Austrian wines better than any human I know -- to the extent that his focus on these wines makes portions of this book a bit of a tough sled for a dyed in the wool Burgundy addict like me, and probably for other folks who aren't devoted accolytes of Riesling, Gruner Veltliner, Scheurebe and the like. It would be easier for me to connect with the book were it more focused on the wines, the growers and the land that I do know pretty well, which ain't Germany and Austria.

As others have said here, this is a heartfelt and insightful little book, full of wisdom and witticisms about the making and enjoyment of wine -- wine as an integral part of life and culture, not as an academic exercise, or a competition among Screaming Eagle swilling hedge fund managers who buy and drink by the Parker bible. For all that, Theise is not a Parker basher, like some others. This book attempts to put both ends of the spectrum -- the terroiristes and the Wine Advocates and everyone in-between -- in a healthy perspective. There are turns of phrase and random observations that made me laugh out loud, or stop and think for a long, long time. Flashes of recognition abound.

So why not an unqualified five stars? Well, at times Theise wanders off into flights of psychobabble that are just a tad too much. At other times its just a bit too clever and too cute.

Despite these quibbles and misgivings -- and they are purely my own and may not be there for others -- I strongly recommend that anyone who cares about wine and who spends a good bit of time drinking and pondering it should buy the book and read it with a glass in hand. Short and to the point, it will get your juices flowing and make you think about the fermented grape juice to which quite a few of us devote quite a bit of our time and energy.

One of the Best Wine Books in the Last Decade
By J. Lefevere
Joining Lawrence Osbourne's The Accidental Connoisseur and Matt Kramer's Making Sense of Wine on the thoughtful wine enthusiasts bookshelf, Theise has written a book that is so wholly singular to his point of view, yet so persuasive that he may yet convert thousands to the wonders of small, artisanal wines from around the world, joining the insider cadre that have followed his German, Austrian and grower Champagne import selections and annual catalog-cum-stream of consciousness manifesto.

To be sure, Theise isn't the first to espouse a conviction about the value of Old World wines that are authentic, terroir-based and in possession of a bent toward the transcendental, he's just the first in the last decade to write with enough clarity and generosity of spirit to potentially turn New World agnostics into Old World disciples, connecting with a new generation of wine enthusiasts for whom the lifestyle mavens and old media dogs are as relatable as a narc at a biker rally.

While reading the slim volume, losing myself in the theatre of my mind, I imagine Theise sitting across the table from me in the dining room of an old row house in a hardscrabble town, maybe Cleveland, Pittsburgh, or Upstate NY, somewhere suitably unfashionable, explaining to me his philosophy on wine -- and by proxy -- life. The education is just getting started when Theise says, at the end of the introduction, just pages into the book, "Confected wines are not designed for human beings; they are designed for `consumers.' Which do you want to be?" At this point, he has removed my defenses, punched me in the gut and put his arm around me whispering reassuringly that I am not that big of a jerk, there is still time to see the light; there is hope.

What follows in Reading between the Wines is as thoughtful of a rumination on small wine and the beauty of being human, in all of our fragility, that you are ever likely to find in a wine book.
