Lost World of the Golden King: In Search of Ancient Afghanistan, by Frank L. Holt

Drawing on ancient historical writings, the vast array of information gleaned in recent years from the study of Hellenistic coins, and startling archaeological evidence newly unearthed in Afghanistan, Frank L. Holt sets out to rediscover the ancient civilization of Bactria. In a gripping narrative informed by the author’s deep knowledge of his subject, this book covers two centuries of Bactria’s history, from its colonization by remnants of Alexander the Great’s army to the kingdom’s collapse at the time of a devastating series of nomadic invasions. Beginning with the few tantalizing traces left behind when the ‘empire of a thousand cities’ vanished, Holt takes up that trail and follows the remarkable and sometimes perilous journey of rediscovery.

Lost World of the Ancient King describes how a single bit of evidence—a Greek coin—launched a search that drew explorers to the region occupied by the tumultuous warring tribes of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Afghanistan. Coin by coin, king by king, the history of Bactria was reconstructed using the emerging methodologies of numismatics. In the twentieth century, extraordinary ancient texts added to the evidence. Finally, one of the ‘thousand cities’ was discovered and excavated, revealing an opulent palace, treasury, temple, and other buildings. Though these great discoveries soon fell victim to the Afghan political crisis that continues today, this book provides a thrilling chronicle of the search for one of the world’s most enigmatic empires.

Lost World of the Golden King: In Search of Ancient Afghanistan
By Dr L W H Taylor
I've just finished my first reading of Professor Frank Lee Holt's latest book 'Lost World of the Golden King: In Search of Ancient Afghanistan' recently published by University California Press. I say first reading because this is one of those books that I will find frequent occasion to refer to again, if not re-read for the pure joy of it (such as I have found to be the case with all Holt's books).

It is a superbly written, entertaining and brilliantly informative account of the the discoveries and personalities that have shaped our understanding of the Graeco-Bactrian realm and its abrupt demise, including the central role of numismatics in this endeavor. It tracks the development of numismatics from the simple 'Checklist Numismatics' approach (practiced by most collectors e.g the Twelve Caesars approach to collecting), through 'Framework Numismatics' to the latest development 'Cognitive Numismatics'. The latter is a term coined by Holt to describe how the interpretation of coins through the 'chaîne opératoire' can provide massive insights into the people and times of their production and circulation, removing the focus from the king or issuing authority to the common man/woman, the broader sweep of history and forces that shaped it.... cognitive numismatics make the coins speak!

I highly recommend it to anyone remotely interested in modern numismatics and the integration of the latter with history and archaeology. Although specific to Bactria in the context of the book, the learning arising from cognitive numismatics, which is still an evolving discipline, is equally applicable to to interpretation and understanding of the broader sweep of the last two and one half millennia of history. Fascinating stuff indeed and a great companion to Holt's seminal works 'Thundering Zeus: The Making of Hellenistic Bactria' and 'Into the Land of Bones: Alexander the Great and Afghanistan'. It is a must read for anyone even remotely interested in the making of the history of Bactria.

An entertaining presentation of how little we know about Hellenistic Bactria
By JPS
This is a well written and accessible book on how little we really know about Hellenistic Bactria following the expedition of Antiochus III, the Seleucid King, and his two-year siege of Bactra (208-206 BC).
There are several reasons for this. One is that most of the Greco-Roman written sources that could have informed us have not survived or have survived in only fragments or compressed summaries by later authors. Another is the sheer difficulty in accessing what is modern Afghanistan ever since the mid-nineteenth century when interest in Hellenistic history, archaeology and numismatics started to develop.

A third reason, to which the author devotes long sections of this book (and of some of his previous books as well) is because thousands of coins have and are being found constantly in the region but are smuggled out of the country and sold to private collectors or sometimes even to museums, therefore preventing any comprehensive identification and any analysis of their origin. The same occurs, more generally, for all archaeological artefacts in the region, with the national museum of Kabul having been pillaged more than once. Needless to say, this explains the somewhat long rant of the author on the subject. Historical evidence that could allow us to know a little bit more about this "lost world" is being destroyed on a daily basis because of the region's lawlessness.

There are also other issues at hand which the author discusses at length in the first part of his book, when presenting the historiography of Bactria. One particular point is that previous historians, W.W. Tarn in particular, have tended to come up with a narrative history of Hellenistic Bactria that owes more to their vivid imagination than to historical evidence. In other terms, they told fascinating stories, rather than history. Many aspects of these stories were in fact unsubstantiated statements that archaeological campaigns and numismatic findings have debunked, as the author explains in some detail. One limitation, perhaps, is that the author, by concentrating on numismatics, provides even less of a narrative than in his previous titles (Thunder of Zeus, in particular). Accordingly, reading this book at times imply that the reader has some prior knowledge about the Kings, pretenders and usurpers of Bactria and North-West India.

Nevertheless, the contents of the book remain mostly fascinating, including the section on Ain Khanoun whose exact Greek name is unknown but which was a major Greek city and very probably the capital of the Bactrian Kingdom during the Second Century BC. It was provided with all the trappings of a Greek polis including a theatre, a gymnasium, a propylea, temples, an arsenal, a palace complete with treasury and mint which may have been installed under the reign of Antiochus I, either between 281 and 261 BC, or perhaps even during the 290s when he was the viceroy in the East. Interesting points also include a discussion of the once prosperous economy surrounding the capital, with the two rivers providing ample water for irrigated agriculture and mines nearby providing a large range of minerals including precious metals.

The last sections, and in fact most of the book, are a dissertation on numismatics and, although scholarly, the author manages to avoid being boring and keep the reader interested (or, to be more accurate, he managed to keep me interested and focused!). It is in these sections that the specific types of coins are discussed, including those that are alluded to in the title (the "Golden King") and which include some of the largest silver and gold coins ever found. The composition and quality of the coins, and how these evolved and decayed over time are also discussed and used to show that the volume of coins expanded as the Kingdom became increasingly pressed and threatened, no doubt because it was needed to pay the soldiers and mercenaries.

A final finding is that the capital was not destroyed but abandoned but its inhabitants (presumably mostly of Greek descent or Hellenised) with the local populations living in the countryside moving to occupy its remains, and not doubt pillage them. We simply do not know whether the inhabitants intended to come back (some coin hoards could support such a view) or even what happened to them. Maybe they joined other Greek communities in more defensible locations further South or maybe they emigrated to nearby India. They have simply left no further record...

Great book on a subject rarely researched
By Karthikeyan
This book is a good book in trying to trace the history of a region and ruler not well researched. It also tries to encapsulate the various ways in which historians have been re-writing history of this region.

A part of the book though gets into hypothetical possibilities extrapolated multiple times just based on a single or very few instance/s of evidence. Interestingly, this book actually counters another book for the same reason.

Overall, a great book to read and understand even how history is written.

Vietnamese Colonial Republican: The Political Vision of Vu Trong Phung, by Peter Zinoman

This volume is a comprehensive study of Vietnam’s greatest and most controversial 20th century writer who died tragically in 1939 at the age of 28. Vu Trong Phung is known for a remarkable collection of politically provocative novels and sensational works of non-fiction reportage that were banned by the communist state from 1960 to 1986. Leading Vietnam scholar, Zinoman, resurrects the life and work of an important intellectual and author in order to reveal a neglected political project that is excluded from conventional accounts of modern Vietnamese political history. He sees Vu Trong Phung as a leading proponent of a localized republican tradition that opposed colonialism, communism, and unfettered capitalism—and that led both to the banning of his work and to the durability of his popular appeal in Vietnam today.

Review
"Timely, meticulous, and three-dimensional analysis."--Nguyen Thi Dieu"American Historical Review" (02/01/2015)

"Peter Zinoman has written a splendid and thought-provoking biography ... It breaks new ground in its focus on Vietnam's urban political culture."--Eric T. Jennings"SOJOURN: Journal of Social Issues in Southeast Asia" (11/01/2015)

From the Inside Flap
"Vietnamese Colonial Republican is the best single study of a major twentieth-century Southeast Asian writer, and his critical relationship to both the colonial and postcolonial eras, known to me. It offers an unsurpassed discussion of the complexities of colonial modernity and their troubled Cold War aftermath." --Alexander Woodside, author of Community and Revolution in Modern Vietnam

"Peter Zinoman and Vu Trong Phung are two gadflies who were meant for each other. In this wonderfully researched and beautifully crafted biography, Zinoman introduces us to the short productive life and extraordinary times of modern Vietnam’s greatest writer. Vu Trong Phung’s social critiques earned him the opprobrium of communists and colonialists in the 1930s, but the themes he explored remain as relevant today as ever. And as always, Zinoman argues provocatively: Phung serves as a case study in how French Republicanism worked itself out in fascinating ways in the empire. Neither Zinoman nor his subject disappoint." --Christopher Goscha, author of Going Indochinese: Contesting Concepts of Space and Place in French Indochina

"In Vietnamese Colonial Republican, Peter Zinoman gives three important contributions to the study of modern Vietnam. First, he proposes a new interpretation of debates among intellectuals in the interwar period; his exposition of 'colonial republicanism' is a fresh and compelling alternative to the version of modern politics that primarily focuses upon the Vietnamese communists. Second, his analysis of the work of Vu Trong Phung greatly expands our view of literature, thought, and culture in the 1930s. Third, his discussion of 'reform communism' offers a fresh vantage on Hanoi politics in the late 1950s. This professionally documented work is clear and readable, yet full of substance." --Keith Weller Taylor, author of The Birth of Vietnam

About the Author
Peter Zinoman is Professor of History and Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley; author of The Colonial Bastille: A History of Imprisonment in Vietnam, 1862-1940 (UC Press, 2001); and cotranslator of Dumb Luck: A Novel by Vu Trong Phung.

The Environmental Legacy of the UC Natural Reserve SystemFrom Brand: University of California Press

The UC Natural Reserve System, established in 1965 to support field research, teaching, and public service in natural environments, has become a prototype of conservation and land stewardship looked to by natural resource managers throughout the world. From its modest beginnings of seven sites, the UC NRS has grown to encompass more than 750,000 wildland acres. This book tells the story of how a few forward-thinking UC faculty, who’d had their research plots and teaching spots destroyed by development and habitat degradation, devised a way to save representative examples of many of California’s major ecosystems. Working together with conservation-minded donors and landowners, with state and federal agencies, and with land trusts and private conservation organizations, they founded what would become the world’s largest university-administered natural reserve system—a legacy of lasting significance and utility.

This lavishly illustrated volume, which includes images by famed photographers Ansel Adams and Galen Rowell, describes the natural and human histories of the system’s many reserves. Located throughout California, these wildland habitats range from coastal tide pools to inland deserts, from lush wetlands to ancient forests, and from vernal pools to oak savannas. By supporting teaching, research, and public service within such protected landscapes, the UC NRS contributes to the understanding and wise stewardship of the Earth.

Researchers, educators, students, and the public can thus discover California, confront its challenges, and ensure its future. Generations of field scientists have and will be trained on these grounds, leaving a legacy of scholarship and environmental enlightenment."--Bruce Pavlik, Mills College, California, author of The California Deserts

"The network of protected areas managed by the University of California’s Natural Reserve System has provided undisturbed environments for research, education, and public service for nearly fifty years. The Environmental Legacy of the UC Natural Reserve System handsomely presents the beauty and significance of these sites, preserved for the benefit of all Californians."--Philip W. Rundel, University of California, Los Angeles, author of Introduction to the Plant Life of Southern California

Autobiography of Mark Twain: Volume 1, Reader's Edition (Mark Twain Papers), by Mark Twain

The year 2010 marked the 100th anniversary of Mark Twain’s death. In celebration of this important milestone and in honor of the cherished tradition of publishing Mark Twain’s works, UC Press published Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 1, the first of a projected three-volume edition of the complete, uncensored autobiography. The book became an immediate bestseller and was hailed as the capstone of the life’s work of America’s favorite author.

This Reader’s Edition, a portable paperback in larger type, republishes the text of the hardcover Autobiography in a form that is convenient for the general reader, without the editorial explanatory notes. It includes a brief introduction describing the evolution of Mark Twain’s ideas about writing his autobiography, as well as a chronology of his life, brief family biographies, and an excerpt from the forthcoming Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 2—a controversial but characteristically humorous attack on Christian doctrine.

From the Inside Flap
"Mark Twain dictated much of this book—now it is a book at last—from a big rumpled bed. Reading it is a bit like climbing in there with him."—Roy Blount, Jr.

"To say that the editors have done an extremely good job is a little like saying the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel does a good job of keeping the rain off the Pope's head. It is true but it doesn't give even a whiff of the grandeur of the thing."—Robert D. Richardson, author of Emerson: The Mind on Fire

"Mark Twain, always so blithely ahead of his time, has just outdone himself: he's brought us an Autobiography from beyond the grave: a hundred-year-old relic that yet manages to accomplish something new. It anticipates the Cubism just taking form in Samuel Clemens's last years, by exploding the confines of orderliness, sequence, the dutiful march of this-then-that. In so doing, it gives us not simply Mark Twain's life—that is the prosaic work of biographers—but the ways in which he thought of his life: in all the fragmented recollection, distraction, creation, revision and dreaming that make up the true, divinely jumbled devices we all use to recapture experience and feeling. If this prodigious and prodigal pastiche were a machine, it would be the Paige typesetter—except that it works."—Ron Powers, author of Mark Twain: A Life

The Reader-Friendly Autobiography of Mark Twain
By C. Hutton
Unlike the original and oversize hardback edition of 2010, this paperback edition is being marketed as the "Reader's Edition." The staff of the University of California Press clearly underestimated the public interest in their academic approach to the publication of Mark Twain's musings on his past life. The first edition was quickly sold out and became an unexpected best-seller during the holiday season of 2010. Out of the 700 pages of text, over half of them dealt with the complexities of establishing the correct text, the many prior false starts by Mark Twain to write his autobiography plus exhaustive notes and appendixes. The hardback edition was aimed at the scholar of Mark Twain literature and to be the "Definitive Autobiography" by printing every reminiscence of his from 1906-1909 in the order it came into creation.

The major difference between these two editions is the elimination of most of the scholarly material -- for instance, the 200+ page introduction has been condensed to 20 pages and the index is gone. What is left for this 2012 paperback edition is the actual autobiographical material that Mark Twain created. The other change has been the increase in font size as the hardback readers complained that the print was too small. The reader can decide how much academic background they desire for the autobiography, which is still a rambling discourse on his life without any chronological sequence.

A vivid glimpse and fresh perspective of an American literary icon who will long be remembered.
By Norm Goldman
Editor: Harriet Elinor Smith
Publisher: University of California Press
ISBN: 978-0-520-27225-5

Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, was born in Florida Missouri on the 30th of November, 1835, which he describes in his autobiography as "an almost invisible village." He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri which would provide him for the settings for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer.

For over thirty-five years between 1870 and 1905 this brilliant American author and humorist had repeatedly endeavored to write his autobiography, however, as we learn from Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 1, nothing much came of these attempts.

It was in 1906 when he really began in earnest to write his autobiography with his daily dictations to his stenographer, Josephine S. Hobby, and he decided that these "Autobiographical Dictations" would form the bulk of what he would call Autobiography of Mark Twain. He believed that he had found the right way to dictate an autobiography and as he states: "to start it at no particular time of your life; wander at your free will all over your life; talk only about the thing which interests you for the moment; drop it the moment its interest threatens to pale, and turn your talk upon the new and more interesting thing that has intruded itself into your mind meantime." Twain believed that biographies are "but the clothes and buttons of man-the biography of the man himself cannot be written." There was to be, however, one important stipulation and that was that the autobiography was not to be published in its entirety until a lapse of one hundred years after his death. Twain died on the twenty-first of April, 1910 and he completed his last chapter of his autobiography in December of 1909.

2010 marked the one hundredth anniversary of Twain's death and to celebrate this important milestone the University of California Press published Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 1, which is to be the first of a projected three-volume edition of the complete, uncensored autobiography. As mentioned in the introduction, it is the goal of the present edition to publish the complete text as nearly as possible in the way Mark Twain intended it to be published after his death.

When I picked up a copy of this captivating tome, I felt as if I was having a private conversation with one of America's most brilliant authors and humorists, whom William Faulkner described as "the father of American Literature," as he spouted out pearls of wisdom and tendered his unabashed opinions concerning religion, politics, the human race and many other topics. Moreover, it also provided me with a window into what Twain and his times said about each other, in a way that can even speak to us today, even though much is quite controversial. As Twain asserts: "we suppress an unpopular opinion because we cannot afford the bitter cost of putting it forth. None of us likes to be hated, none of us likes to be shunned," which was probably one of the reasons why he wanted to defer the publication of his autobiography. To exemplify, Twain believed that in the "matter of slavish imitation, man is the monkey's superior all the time. The average man is destitute of independence of opinion. He is not interested in contriving an opinion of his own, by study and reflection, but is only anxious to find out what his neighbor's opinion is and slavishly adopt it." Strong words, but very true. Another is Twain's opinion of the trade of critic in literature, music, and drama, which he considered to be the most degraded of all trades, that has no real value-"certainly no large value."

The autobiography also provides the reader with fascinating information narrated by Twain as to how he entered the lecture circuit, his experiences as a public speaker and journalist, the society he mingled with, his famous friends including presidents, artists, industrialists, European royalty, travels, unsuccessful business ventures, and his hefty earnings. His reflections and ruminations are presented largely without apology yet, when you read and savor them, you can't help nodding your head and agreeing with them, as they are frank and honest-something that is lacking today in the media. In addition, Twain devotes considerable ink to his daughter Susy's writings, her diary and her favorable opinions concerning her father. Unfortunately, Susy died when she was only twenty-four.

Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 1 was a pleasure to read, insightful, thought-provoking and wonderfully delicious. There was not an opinion or fulmination that was not packed with admirable concision and careful attention to detail, as well as irreverent humor and biting social satire. Thanks to the publishers with affording us with the opportunity to experience a vivid glimpse and fresh perspective of an American literary icon who will long be remembered.

A Great Book!
By Dad of Divas
The book was an amazing tribute to a remarkable man. You get to know so much about the man and the myth and though I have read many of his stories, I really did not know much about him as a man. but this book opened my eyes to the world that he lived in and the world that he created around him. I loved the anecdotes spread throughout the entire book which provides any lover of history with great information and resources. As you read you also are given an amazing insight into the many characters that surrounded the life of Mark Twain. Thus, you get the opportunity to really get to know this amazing man. While the book is thick and takes some time to get through, the book is definitely worth the time and effort! You will love this book!

Hitchcock on Hitchcock, Volume 2: Selected Writings and Interviews, by Alfred Hitchcock

This second volume of Alfred Hitchcock’s reflections on his life and work and the art of cinema contains material long out of print, not easily accessible, and in some cases forgotten or unknown. Edited by Sidney Gottlieb, this new collection of interviews, articles with the great director's byline, and “as-told-to” pieces provides an enlivening perspective on a career that spanned seven decades and transformed the history of cinema.

In writings and interviews imbued with the same exuberance and originality that he brought to his films, Hitchcock ranges from accounts of his own life and experiences to provocative comments on filmmaking techniques and cinema in general. Wry, thoughtful, witty, and humorous—as well as brilliantly informative and insightful—this volume contains much valuable material that adds to our understanding and appreciation of a titan who decades after his death remains one of the most renowned and influential of all filmmakers.

François Truffaut once said that Hitchcock “had given more thought to the potential of his art than any of his colleagues.” This profound contemplation of his art is superbly captured in the pieces from all periods of Hitchcock’s career gathered in this volume, which reveal fascinating details about how he envisioned and attempted to create a “pure cinema” that was entertaining, commercially successful, and artistically ambitious and innovative in an environment that did not always support this lofty goal.

From the Inside Flap
"Who knew there was so much more intriguing material waiting to be gathered for Volume Two of Hitchcock on Hitchcock? Gottlieb has done a splendid job of searching down and intelligently introducing rare, often surprising items, including Hitchcock's early fiction, missing elements from his published conversations with Truffaut, and several of his little-known, nuanced essays on the craft of film making. Volume Two is a pleasure to read and a gift to anyone interested in the great director's career."—James Naremore, author of An Invention without a Future: Essays on Cinema

"For nearly twenty years, film buffs have been unable to imagine a world without Hitchcock on Hitchcock. Now Sidney Gottlieb has unearthed another volume’s worth of interviews, essays, and occasional pieces by the Master of Suspense, framing, contextualizing, and serving them up with unobtrusive deftness. I suspect that in less than twenty-four hours, readers exploring this gold mine of wisdom, opinion, memoir, anecdotes, and epigrams will be unable to imagine a world without Hitchcock on Hitchcock 2."—Thomas Leitch, coeditor of A Companion to Alfred Hitchcock

Praise for Volume 1:
"The essays, interviews and speeches in this collection make clear that [Hitchcock] enjoyed playing the role of God: in planning and executing his films, he relished the power he exerted as an all-powerful auteur. . . . Hitchcock on Hitchcock provides some telling self-portraits of the director. Almost every piece . . . contains an interesting nugget of technical information, or one or two anecdotal truffles."—Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

"Simply having this much out-of-the-way material at one's fingertips makes this a must for Hitchcock scholars.... This us an editing job worthy of the director himself." —Ina Ray Hark, Hitchcock Annual

"This is a book for anyone interested in Hitchcock the man and the—yes—artist; but also for those concerned with the history of British and American cinema, and with how these films, or some of their famous scenes, were made; and, at least intermittently, for those who fancy a good anecdone, a bit of tart humour, some iconoclastic views, and many fine insights into art and life—along with others of a more dubious nature." —John Simon, Times Literary Supplement

About the Author
Sidney Gottlieb is Professor of Communication and Media Studies at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. He coedits (with Richard Allen) the Hitchcock Annual, and his books include Hitchcock on Hitchcock: Selected Writings and Interviews, Volume 1; Alfred Hitchcock: Interviews; and Roberto Rossellini’s “Rome Open City.”

INDISPENSABLE
By EPluribusUnum100
Even if you are only slightly interested in Alfred Hitchcock you will find this book enjoyable reading just for the sheer variety of material culled from a 50+ year career. For students of Hitchcock's films this volume is quite indispensable, particularly the HITCHCOCK AT WORK section which includes a 22-page transcription of the director talking with his production manager about shooting STAGE FRIGHT and going over all the logistics of the film even before the screenplay was written. Unfortunately no excerpts from this are presented in Amazon's rather generous selection of preview pages, but have a look at Hitchcock's earliest writings in the preview to see the value of this volume, especially the short "Titles--Artistic and Otherwise" (p 71) or "How a Talking Film is Made" (p.73). The paperback edition I have is printed on sturdy, recycled paper and the binding looks like it will stand up to years of use--which is likely as this is really an indispensable reference book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Free for All: Fixing School Food in America (California Studies in Food and Culture), by Janet Poppendieck

How did our children end up eating nachos, pizza, and Tater Tots for lunch? Taking us on an eye-opening journey into the nation's school kitchens, this superbly researched book is the first to provide a comprehensive assessment of school food in the United States. Janet Poppendieck explores the deep politics of food provision from multiple perspectives--history, policy, nutrition, environmental sustainability, taste, and more. How did we get into the absurd situation in which nutritionally regulated meals compete with fast food items and snack foods loaded with sugar, salt, and fat? What is the nutritional profile of the federal meals? How well are they reaching students who need them? Opening a window onto our culture as a whole, Poppendieck reveals the forces--the financial troubles of schools, the commercialization of childhood, the reliance on market models--that are determining how lunch is served. She concludes with a sweeping vision for change: fresh, healthy food for all children as a regular part of their school day.

From the Inside Flap
"In her extraordinarily well-thought-out, beautifully written, sympathetic, and compelling book, Jan Poppendieck makes clear that Free for All has two meanings: how pressures to reduce the cost of school meals put our children's health at risk, and how best to solve this problem—universal school meals. Anyone who reads this book will find the present school lunch situation beyond unacceptable. Free for All is a call for action on behalf of America's school kids, one that we all need to join. I will be using this book in all my classes."—Marion Nestle, author of Food Politics

"President Obama has promised to end childhood hunger in America by the year 2015. He and his team should read Jan Poppendieck's new book Free for All. Her simple premise is that hunger is the enemy of education. She makes a persuasive case for the federal government to provide nutritious free school lunch and breakfast to every school child in America as a major step to end childhood hunger, reduce obesity and a whole range of nutrition related diseases and to improve the education of our children at the same time. Now, for the first time in my 35 years of fighting hunger we have a president who has pledged to actually do it starting with children and a book that provides the roadmap for an important part of the journey. Anyone who cares about our children should read this book."—Bill Ayres, Co-Founder and Executive Director of WHY (World Hunger Year)

“Free For All is an essential resource for anyone interested in school food reform. Janet Poppendieck has taken on a topic of extraordinary complexity and produced a comprehensive and engaging analysis of how the current system came to be, why it is so resistant to change, and what we can do to improve it. Throughout she rejects the scapegoating, moralism, and quick fixes that characterize so much of the current debate over school food. Instead, she offers insightful structural analysis, engaging interviews with front-line food service personnel, and colorful accounts of visits to lunch rooms across the nation. Free For All looks beyond local success stories, calling for a national program redesign that challenges us all to rethink the role of school food policy within the larger food system. What Upton Sinclair's The Jungle was to food safety regulation at the beginning of the last century, Poppendieck's Free for All may well be for school food reform at the start of the new century.”—Timothy D. Lytton, Angela and Albert Farone Distinguished Professor of Law, Albany Law School

“Janet Poppendieck's Free for All is a timely and extremely thoughtful call for a sane, just, and healthy school food agenda for America's children. Complex yet clear, vivid and engrossing, Free for All should be required reading for relevant courses in sociology, education, social work, and public health. It is truly food for thought for students, community activists, and policy makers.”—Ruth Sidel, PhD, Author of Unsung Heroines: Single Mothers and the American Dream

About the Author
Janet Poppendieck is Professor of Sociology at Hunter College, City University of New York. She is the author of Sweet Charity? Emergency Food and the End of Entitlement and Breadlines Knee Deep in Wheat: Food Assistance in the Great Depression.

Great Info on What and How to Change School Food in America
By Nancy Romer
Free For All: Fixing School Food in America, is a fabulous guide to the intricacies of School Food change. It's a must-read for those interested in how the system came to be so convoluted but unlike many similar books this one is loaded with examples of how ordinary people have organized to improve school food. Poppendieck believes that the time to transform School Food is now--it's the moment in which education and health are joined in the public eye. She also shows how environmental activists determined to slow global warming can accomplish all of the above by signing on to the now-vibrant School Food reform movement. Well-written, easy to read, very thoughtful book.

Comprehensive Overview
By Liana C Hebb
I was disappointed to discover that while the author portrays a comprehensive and very interesting account of our country's school food system, Poppendieck's slant on nutrition in school foods (for example, reducing fat and increasing carbs as beneficial) is outdated. I wish she had more current research on this aspect.

Indispensable for anyone who cares about improving school food!
By bhou
I'm a blogger about school food (among other topics) (thelunchtraydotcom) and I'm constantly relying on, citing and recommending this book to my readers.

In clear, readable and extremely well-researched prose, Poppendieck lays out for the reader everything you'd ever want or need to know about the school lunch program, from its historical roots (which explain the sometimes perplexing regulatory thicket governing the program now) to what it's like behind the scenes in actual school kitchens. What I like best about Poppendieck is that she approaches the subject with no agenda, hidden or otherwise - even as she promotes reform, she clearly has empathy for school districts which are trying, under intense financial pressure, to provide meals that are compliant with federal regulations.

If you care about the issue of school food in America, this is a MUST READ.

Why Jazz Happened, by Marc Myers

Why Jazz Happened is the first comprehensive social history of jazz. It provides an intimate and compelling look at the many forces that shaped this most American of art forms and the many influences that gave rise to jazz’s post-war styles. Rich with the voices of musicians, producers, promoters, and others on the scene during the decades following World War II, this book views jazz’s evolution through the prism of technological advances, social transformations, changes in the law, economic trends, and much more.

In an absorbing narrative enlivened by the commentary of key personalities, Marc Myers describes the myriad of events and trends that affected the music's evolution, among them, the American Federation of Musicians strike in the early 1940s, changes in radio and concert-promotion, the introduction of the long-playing record, the suburbanization of Los Angeles, the Civil Rights movement, the “British invasion” and the rise of electronic instruments. This groundbreaking book deepens our appreciation of this music by identifying many of the developments outside of jazz itself that contributed most to its texture, complexity, and growth.

A Cultural History of Jazz (or How Jazz Didn't Occur in a Vacuum)
By Kevin Currie-Knight
Why Jazz Happened is not your typical history of jazz. You won't get long biographies of Coltrane, Davis, and Monk. You won't get in-depth analyses of great songs, albums, or soloists. What you will get is the story of how cultural, social, and historical variables all helped to create jazz. Coltrane's extended solos, after all, are as much a product of the civil rights struggle and invention of the long play (LP) record as they were about Coltrane's upbringing and his legendary quartet. Bebop owes as much to the musician's union's strike (barring members from recording for two years in order to petition for royalties for recorded music) as it does to the pioneering vision of artists like Dizzy Gillespie.

So, Why Jazz Happened is a history of jazz, yes; but it is as much a history about American culture told through the story of jazz. West Coast jazz (a favorite of mine), for instance, is largely 'explained' (though Marc Myers is no reductionist) by the housing boom in post-WWII West Coast and the fact that many touring musicians decided to settle there, developing a laid back sound to match the laid back weather and atmosphere. Spiritual jazz (from Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" to Rollins's "Freedom Suite") is argued to be largely an outgrowth of black musicians' disappointment with legal and cultural segregation, and the lack of progress toward equality; many black artists increasingly wrote spiritual-influenced jazz expressing their anger at the present and hope toward the future. Soul jazz (from Lou Donaldson to Grant Green) is seen as jazz musicians' and record labels' attempts to get R&B record buyers to come back and buy jazz records. I hope I am not making Myers's explanations sound too simplistic; his story makes use of an impressive array of primary and secondary sources including interviews with the musicians (and 'behind the secenes' folks like record executives) working at the times in question.

If I have one complaint, it is that the book goes off in many different directions, sometimes, feeling a bit long winded. The chapter on West Coast jazz, for instance, gokes on for 20 or so pages on the ins and outs of Los Angeles's post-WWII booming housing market and the urban planning involved in dealing with the sprawl. Sections like these (another is an in-depth story of the creation of the LP record) are interesting for 10 or so pages, but the reader can get a bit bogged down in these details. (I suspect that during these times, most readers will be saying "let's get to the jazz part." I know I was.)

But all in all, I kept reading. The book was very interesting, particularly because it was both about jazz and the cultural surroundings that advertently and inadvertently shaped it. I know I will never listen to some of my favorites the same way again. Now, these favorites will come a bit more to life. And I think that is a good thing.

Why The Music Industry Happened!
By BookHimDan
Marc Myers is the kind of Jazz writer who never rests for a minute. He writes a daily blog called jazzwax (dot com) which is full of engaging interviews, opinions and recommendations about the music he so clearly knows and loves.

I believe the true audience for this book is much wider than just those interested in the history of Jazz. The book actually covers social and economic topics such as the advent of the LP and 45rpm records and the business rivalries that led to the emergence of pop, rock and even classical music as an at-home-entertainment industry. This book is probably just as important as an MBA case study as it is to the history of Jazz. Myers' coverage of the GI Bill and how it led to a generation of "schooled" musicians is another interesting social and political phenomenon that is of general interest, and helps explain why there is such a proliferation of music majors even today.

I don't mean in any way to diminish the importance of this book as a history of Jazz. My point is that it is much wider in scope. Myers set out to explain why Jazz happened, and he ended up explaining why the music industry as a whole happened, and the central role America has played in its evolution. A must-read for all music lovers.

Riveting account of how American history shaped Jazz and vice versa
By Tony Hymes
Marc Myers' background in history is immediately apparent as "Why Jazz Happened" chronicles the last century in intimate detail. From the cultural, political, social, and personal influences that impressed themselves on the ever-changing genres of swing, big band, bebop and "jass," this book will heighten readers' appreciation for one of the most American types of music. Highly recommended to anyone with even the slightest interest in Jazz, after the introduction and first chapter you will be hooked, and you just might become a Jazz fan for life. Good tip: cue up different tracks to listen to (from YouTube, Whyd, etc) that Myers mentions while you read along. You can actually see the progression of the artists and the music itself.

Coming of Age in America: The Transition to Adulthood in the Twenty-First CenturyFrom University of California Press

What is it like to become an adult in twenty-first-century America? This book takes us to four very different places—New York City, San Diego, rural Iowa, and Saint Paul, Minnesota—to explore the dramatic shifts in coming-of-age experiences across the country. Drawing from in-depth interviews with people in their twenties and early thirties, it probes experiences and decisions surrounding education, work, marriage, parenthood, and housing. The first study to systematically explore this phenomenon from a qualitative perspective, Coming of Age in America offers a clear view of how traditional patterns and expectations are changing, of the range of forces that are shaping these changes, and of how young people themselves view their lives.
