The Paradox of Hope: Journeys through a Clinical Borderland, by Cheryl Mattingly

Grounded in intimate moments of family life in and out of hospitals, this book explores the hope that inspires us to try to create lives worth living, even when no cure is in sight. The Paradox of Hope focuses on a group of African American families in a multicultural urban environment, many of them poor and all of them with children who have been diagnosed with serious chronic medical conditions. Cheryl Mattingly proposes a narrative phenomenology of practice as she explores case stories in this highly readable study. Depicting the multicultural urban hospital as a border zone where race, class, and chronic disease intersect, this theoretically innovative study illuminates communities of care that span both clinic and family and shows how hope is created as an everyday reality amid trying circumstances.

Review
"This work of outstanding scholarship should be a great addition to collections of medical anthropology and health studies."--"Choice"

From the Inside Flap
"The Paradox of Hope shows how clinicians, families and patients employ hope in their illness narratives and treatment stories, and indeed, in their lives in general. A serious and revealing ethnographic exploration of hope as the making up of life."—Arthur Kleinman, Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology, Harvard University

"Among those writing studies of medicine and therapeutic practice, Cheryl Mattingly is, on my reading, the most elegant and insightful interpreter of clinical scenes. No one else can describe so well the drama, dance, and dialogue between all types of clinicians and their patients, including families. The depth and breadth of this ethnography are extraordinary, going from micro interactions to demographics, from small rooms to cityscapes. Mattingly’s 'narrative phenomenology' holds these potentially disparate strands together"—Arthur W. Frank, author of Letting Stories Breathe: A Socio-Narratology

"Mattingly’s book achingly reveals the possibilities and limits of a ‘blues hope’ that rallies critically ill, low-income African American children, their families, and, yes, even some clinicians, to enact ephemerally life-sustaining dramas against a backdrop of sober medical prognoses. We are ushered inside ‘clinical borderlands’ where misunderstandings among ‘familiar strangers’ have pernicious outcomes. Clinical borderlands are fraught with culturally shaped clashing genres—ineffective parental reports of symptoms, cryptic medical charts, and clinician accounts that cast doctor as sleuth, illness as battlefield, and body as broken machine. Yet, out of this array, borders are sometimes crossed, clinician-family partnerships formed, and a hopeful future opened through heroic acts that become re-experienced as life-transforming narratives." —Elinor Ochs, Professor of Anthropology, UCLA

By Josephine Ensign
It was a fascinating experience reading this book while living in a 'borderline' of a hotel in downtown Los Angeles, amidst many of the public hospitals that are the settings for the clinical narrative dramas portrayed in Mattingly's book. While Mattingly's research mainly focuses on the interactions between occupational therapists and impoverished African American families struggling with care for a child with a chronic illness (such as sickle cell disease or cancer), her inclusion--somewhat obliquely--in this book of home health nurses is intriguing. She calls them some of the 'most liminal' and 'most hated' of all health care workers, but doesn't elaborate much on that blanket statement. She does make the very important case for how we use 'Othering' language in health care when we use the stigmatizing language of 'non-compliant patient,' but also when we use terms such as 'overwhelmed parent' or even 'heroic mother.'

In one word: Nope
By samantha
Dear Lord kill me, I barely made it through this book alive. I had to read this for a medical anthropology class, and by chapter 3 I was begging Mattingly to stop repeating the same claim over and over and over again in different words. Like we get it, stop...please...

Reflections of Amma: Devotees in a Global Embrace, by Amanda J. Lucia

Globally known as Amma, meaning "Mother," Mata Amritanandamayi has developed a massive transnational humanitarian organization based in hugs. She is familiar to millions as the “hugging saint,” a moniker that derives from her elaborate darshan programs wherein nearly every day ten thousand people are embraced by the guru one at a time, events that routinely last ten to twenty hours without any rest for her. Although she was born in 1953 as a low-caste girl in a South Indian fishing village, today millions revere her as guru and goddess, a living embodiment of the divine on earth.

Reflections of Amma focuses on communities of Amma’s devotees in the United States, showing how they endeavor to mirror their guru’s behaviors and transform themselves to emulate the ethos of the movement. This study argues that “inheritors” and “adopters” of Hindu traditions differently interpret Hindu goddesses, Amma, and her relation to feminism and women’s empowerment because of their inherited religious, cultural, and political dispositions. In this insightful ethnographic analysis, Amanda J. Lucia discovers how the politics of American multiculturalism reifies these cultural differences in “de facto congregations,” despite the fact that Amma’s embrace attempts to erase communal boundaries in favor of global unity.

"No challenge is more urgent than the need to achieve climate security. We will not succeed unless we base our decisions on a clear understanding of the complex interplay between the choices we are making and their consequences for natural and human systems. This pioneering atlas sets out much of the available knowledge in an attractive and accessible way. It will become an essential point of reference for anyone looking for a quick and accurate overview of this multidisciplinary subject."—John Ashton, Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO)

Wonderful book that fully explains climate change
By Cali RN
Wonderful book that shows in detail through many methods and data what climate change is and what impact it is having on our world and populations. The eight parts of the book logically present the subject: 1) Signs of Change, 2) The Changing Climate, 3) Driving Climate Change, 4) Expected Consequences, 5) Responding to Change, 6) International Policy and Action, 7) Committing to Solutions, and 8) Climate Change Data.

Specific subjects (i.e., The Greenhouse Effect, Emissions Past & Present, Renewable Energy) within each chapter are presented on two-page formats, making the information easy and convenient to read and study.

Pictures, graphics and illustrations are top-notch on high quality, bright, heavy-weight paper. Graphs, tables, illustrations, statistics, factual observations and measurements support and enhance basic and detailed explanations of scientific principles and phenomena .... showing this information in an atlas format. Written information and graphics/illustrations complement each other - making this book great for visual learners.

This book is great either for someone with a strong background in the sciences or as a good introductory book to scientific principles, the world we live in, consequences and solutions. This would also be a good book for a young adult or a climate change denier (if they get past opening up the book).

This book illustrates that there are MANY factors that go into the contribution to and the effects of climate change. It provides an invaluable, indirect lesson on logic in addition to the premise of cause and effect.

Published by University of California Press and printed in Hong Kong.

Good resource. More summary of impacts/end results needed.
By Matthew E. Taylor
Missing some "so-what," cumulative analysis. Was hoping for more maps of what the world's geography (eg forecasted weather, agriculture outcomes, etc would look like). Good data & graphics on temp changes, but not so much on what the average temps will be, what kinds of natural disaster they will likely have, and what life will look like in given areas as a result. I know that is hard to do, but that is what people are most after. Before and after analysis would be awesome too.

Hanoi's Road to the Vietnam War, 1954-1965, by Pierre Asselin

Hanoi's Road to the Vietnam War opens in 1954 with the signing of the Geneva accords that ended the eight-year-long Franco-Indochinese War and created two Vietnams. In agreeing to the accords, Ho Chi Minh and other leaders of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam anticipated a new period of peace leading to national reunification under their rule; they never imagined that within a decade they would be engaged in an even bigger feud with the United States. Basing his work on new and largely inaccessible Vietnamese materials as well as French, British, Canadian, and American documents, Pierre Asselin explores the communist path to war. Specifically, he examines the internal debates and other elements that shaped Hanoi's revolutionary strategy in the decade preceding U.S. military intervention, and resulting domestic and foreign programs. Without exonerating Washington for its role in the advent of hostilities in 1965, Hanoi's Road to the Vietnam War demonstrates that those who directed the effort against the United States and its allies in Saigon were at least equally responsible for creating the circumstances that culminated in arguably the most tragic conflict of the Cold War era.

A MUCH NEEDED CORRECTIVE TO THE HISTORY OF THE ORIGINS OF THE VIETNAM WAR, 1965-1973
By SPIN
Based on extensive research of Vietnamese, French, British, Canadian, and American source documents and written by a Vietnamese and French linguist, Hanoi's Road To The Vietnam War lays to rest many of the myths, prejudices, and wrong assumptions concerning the origins of the Vietnam War. Thanks to Dr. Asselin's painstaking mining of Vietnamese documents-many for the first time ever- and his skill as a linguist, we now know that the Vietnam War, 1965-73 did not originate as a surreptitious act of intervention by the Johnson Administration. It was much more complicated than that.

In fact the collision between North Vietnam and the United States was set irretrievably in motion on November 22, 1963-actually the day BEFORE JFK was assassinated, Asia time. On that date the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV-North Vietnam to us) convened the 9th Plenary Session since 1960 in response to the Nov. 2, 1963 coup and assassination of Ngo Dinh Diem, President of South Vietnam and his brother Ngo Dinh Nhu. It was believed, correctly as it turned out by the DRV leadership, that the Kennedy Administration had signed off on the coup and the assumption of the leadership of South Vietnam (SVN) by Gen. "Big" Minh signaled a probable ratcheting up of the U.S. military commitment.

This 9th Plenary Session of the Central Committee was to result in a coup of sorts within the DRV Communist Party leadership and changed the entire face of the low level confrontation between the DRV and the U.S. that had existed up to that time. There were two factions within the Central Committee. One faction, including Ho Chi Minh and Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap favored a cautious approach to the eventual overthrow of the government in the South. The other, more militant faction had lost patience with the gradual approach and still felt the sting of the big power induced compromise Geneva Agreement of 1954 which resulted in partition of the country. This was especially humiliating to the militants since Gen. Giap's Vietminh Army had decisively defeated the French in the First Indochina War.

Under the leadership of Le Duan, the militants favored a policy of outright war in the South even if it risked showdown with the U.S. Having spent the war with the French fighting in the South, Le Duan was especially sensitive to the existence of a regime in the South that, in his view, was the illegitimate offspring of a flawed compromise at Geneva.

By the time the 9th Plenary Session had ended on January 20, 1964, Le Duan and the militants had carried the day. Resolution No,9 of the Plenary Session was the decision to go to war in the South regardless of the strong possibility of U.S. intervention on a large scale. The moderates were rapidly purged from positions of responsibility. Even Ho Chi Minh was marginalized and assumed a figurehead role which he played superbly in the ensuing years before his death in 1969. Giap's role was much diminished and it is still not clear to what extent he influenced subsequent military operations.

To quote Dr. Asselin: " Resolution 9 portended a consequential realignment of the party's revolutionary strategy. It represented, in fact the most significant party pronouncement on the situation in the south since the decision to accept the Geneva accords in 1954. It also set the DRV on an irreversible collision course with the United States. The bold and ambitious program adopted by the Central Committee effectively gave DRV decision makers a blank check to wage war in the South."

It should be noted that all this occurred within two months of JFK's assassination and fully 8-months before Congress gave LBJ a similar blank check with the Gulf Of Tonkin Resolution. Moreover the DRV assumed an all or nothing negotiating position-the U.S. must agree to withdraw unconditionally from South Vietnam as a pre-condition to any talks. Taken in the context of 1964-not even 20-years after WWII-it is inconceivable that any U.S. President could or would accept such a Dictat from what was assumed to be a third rate military power. While Washington decision makers cannot be absolved from their mistakes in the runup to the war, I believe Dr. Asselin makes a very strong case that The Vietnam War was all but inevitable.

Verdict; This is a MUST read for all those interested in the Vietnam War and is loaded with lessons for our time. Those of us who were of military age at the time and can remember the protests and discord that rocked America back then will find this book enlightening and in many cases, surprising in view of the many myths, mis-information, and ideological misconceptions that have blocked a comprehensive understanding of this tragic episode in our history.

The Vietnamese paid a terrible price for their intransigence
By James P. OHare
Having just returned from nearly a month in Vietnam, and having the experience of seeing Uncle Ho resting in state, I returned home to continue my thirty year study of the country and it's culture. The title of this book intrigued me and it was off to the races to obtain it. With a habit of highlighting important passages...perhaps to a fault... at least two highlighters were drained dry as pages were turned. Although this work is quite academic and not a work to read on the beach, the information is absolutely critical to anyone hoping to understand "their side" and the decisions that made the ensuing American War appear inevitable. Especially enlightening is the evolution of power away from Ho and Giap and toward Duan with his desire to escalate the fighting in the South. The Vietnamese paid a terrible price for their intransigence, and it was made all the more frustrating by a a near complete misunderstanding of the situation on the part of the United States. This is a very labor intensive book, but adds a plethora of solid research into the psyche of the those who would accept nothing short of complete victory. Highly recommend this book and the insight it provides. Please take your time as you read it...and keep a highlighter handy.

Fair and understanding look at the mistakes that Ha Noi made that contributed to the Viet Nam War
By Sam Eaton
Building on "Hanoi's War" An International History of the War for Peace in Vietnam By Lien-Hang T. Nguyen, and original research, Pierre Asselin gives a well documented and researched look at the causes of the Viet Nam War.

In America, this war has become so politicized that reality and truth have gotten lost on both sides of the debate. I have retired in Viet Nam and find that the Vietnamese, both those who fought alongside us and those who fought against us, tend (like the Vietnamese National Archives in Ha Noi) to blame not just America and JFK and LBJ, but Le Duan as well. Pierre Asselin paints what I believe to be fair and balanced view of Le Duan and the reasons behind Le Duan's coup against Ho Chi Minh and Le Duan's march to War.

Peter Selz: Sketches of a Life in Art, by Paul J. Karlstrom

This absorbing biography, often conveyed through Peter Selz’s own words, traces the journey of a Jewish-German immigrant from Hitler’s Munich to the United States and on to an important career as a pioneer historian of modern art. Paul J. Karlstrom illuminates key historical and cultural events of the twentieth-century as he describes Selz’s extraordinary career—from Chicago’s Institute of Design (New Bauhaus), to New York’s Museum of Modern Art during the transformative 1960s, and as founding director of the University Art Museum at UC Berkeley. Karlstrom sheds light on the controversial viewpoints that at times isolated Selz from his colleagues but nonetheless affirmed his conviction that significant art was always an expression of deep human experience. The book also links Selz’s long life story—featuring close relationships with such major art figures as Mark Rothko, Dore Ashton, Willem de Kooning, Sam Francis, and Christo—with his personal commitment to political engagement.

From the Inside Flap
“Peter Selz's experience and energy in the art world have led to important and challenging museum shows, and his work with Jeanne-Claude and me helped realize the Running Fence in 1976. I am happy his story is being told in this book.”

—Christo

“The extraordinary career of one of the most energetic and, above all, creative figures in twentieth century art history is deftly described in this essential book.”—Dore Ashton, author of A Fable of Modern Art

“In Sketches of a Life in Art, it's clear that Peter Selz uniquely sees painting as if from within the artist himself, not as an outside observer (as when he describes the ‘internal look’ of a Mark Rothko painting). And a moving Life it is.”—Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Poet Laureate of San Francisco and author of How to Paint Sunlight

“Engaging and delightful, this book offers its readers a succession of alternative histories of modern and contemporary art, ranging from George Grosz to William Kentridge, looping back to bring in Robert Rauschenberg and Sam Francis, among many others. All reimagined in Peter Selz's ambitious curatorial imagination to delve into the moment and discover. . .classical tradition. Perhaps only Paul Karlstrom, with forty years behind him using oral history to recover the hidden stories of twentieth-century art, could have followed the mirrors and mazes of Peter Selz's career and told a story both clear and amazing. Readers will share the delight that Karlstrom discovers in his subject.”—Richard Candida Smith, author of The Modern Moves West: California Artists and Democratic Culture in the Twentieth Century

The Art of Yesterday -- Or Almost Yesterday
By Frederick Jordan
Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Max Beckmann--do these names sound familiar? If your remembrance of Art History 101 is a bit faulty, just buy a copy of this new book by Paul J. Karlstrom for a refresher course, like nothing you ever had in the classroom. It follows the life of Peter Selz, one of the gray eminences in the world of late 20th century art. He was not a maker of things but a historian, curator, teacher and critic of them. This fluent and seamless read carries the reader on a transatlantic and transcontinental journey as it traces Selz' journey from his youth in Munich, his escape to New York in the mid-30s, and the establishment of his bona fides as a critic with a major publication on German Expressionist artists. But lest you think this a dry slide show of the "modern," Selz was a figure who was both iconoclastic and yet a thoroughgoing insider, capping the first part of his career with the sweet job of curator of modern painting at the Museum of Modern Art. Well, the story continues--he went to California and became director of the art museum at Berkeley, and he wound up championing California art (very un-New Yorkish) and artists. Eventually he left Cal, as he did MOMA, in circumstances that would liven up the dinner table, and continued (and continues) putting on exhibitions of underappreciated artists in the Bay Area. Karlstrom was the premier oral historian of art for the Smithsonian Institution and this biography draws on his skill as an interviewer, not just of Selz but of the numerous people Selz interacted with in his long and notable career. This is a book not just about the making of art, but about the selling of it, about museums and universities and galleries, and the enormously talented and driven people that inhabit that world. The author builds a stage portrait of one of the machers in that world, and at the same time slyly pulls the curtain back to show a bit of the scaffolding and the props all lying slightly awry.

Pomona College gave birth to a legend
By William J. Havlicek, PhD
As a Claremont University graduate I am well acquainted with our sister college Pomona and of its legendary role in Peter Selz's career.
The sketches of his life include important events that transpired at Pomona, Berkeley and beyond. But the important thing is not only
the context and its local lore but of Peter himself. Not a perfect man (and there are none) what stands out for me is his humanity and
compassion for the underdog. Having survived the holocaust he became well aware of how precarious life can be. It was this precious knowledge
that kept him in the arts and allowed him to understand the truth embodied in German Expressionist painting. Peter is one of those leaders in art
who reflect the moral call to tell the truth about the human condition. That condition is a universal reality for all humankind with its suffering,
distancing and tendency to despair. All the same art that arises from that condition (such as German Expressionism) rivets the heart and reminds us
as Peter Selz has repeatedly done of the soul that resonates in truth-telling. This book is important because it reminds us in yet another way
of why art is important and timeless. William J. Havlicek PhD

It Whets the Appetite for More
By Sara E. Heath
Curator and historian Peter Selz, who is now in his early 90s, has long been a powerful figure in the art world, but this biography by Paul J. Karlstrom will further extend his reach. It would provide a wonderful foundation for a college-level course on the history of contemporary art.

If you have ever wondered by what means and by whom great artists and important movements are identified, this book provides wonderful insight. As it rolls through the story of Selz's life in New York and California and the important role he played in defining and staging greatness, it whets the appetite to learn more about the artists and the movements that represent important signposts in the evolution of human consciousness.

Peter Selz was an extraordinary person with a very large and somewhat controversial life, all of which is addressed here with meticulous objectivity as well as candor in a style that is extremely engaging as well as polished. This is a splendid work of scholarship and sensitivity, one that could create a new and enduring interest in contemporary art--in art in general.

Catholic Vietnam: A Church from Empire to Nation, by Charles Keith

In this important new study, Charles Keith explores the complex position of the Catholic Church in modern Vietnamese history. By demonstrating how French colonial rule allowed for the transformation of Catholic missions in Vietnam into broad and powerful economic and institutional structures, Keith discovers the ways race defined ecclesiastical and cultural prestige and control of resources and institutional authority. This, along with colonial rule itself, created a culture of religious life in which relationships between Vietnamese Catholics and European missionaries were less equal and more fractious than ever before. However, the colonial era also brought unprecedented ties between Vietnam and the transnational institutions and culture of global Catholicism, as Vatican reforms to create an independent national Church helped Vietnamese Catholics to reimagine and redefine their relationships to both missionary Catholicism and to colonial rule itself. Much like the myriad revolutionary ideologies and struggles in the name of the Vietnamese nation, this revolution in Vietnamese Catholic life was ultimately ambiguous, even contradictory: it established the foundations for an independent national Church, but it also polarized the place of the new Church in post-colonial Vietnamese politics and society and produced deep divisions between Vietnamese Catholics themselves.

Review
"An excellent book. The research is based on a solid command of the archival sources; it is well argued and loaded with insightful details."--Patricia M. Pelley"American Historical Review" (04/01/2014)

""Catholic Vietnam" . . . is an articulate and thoughtful re-evaluation of the Church as a national institution and as a factor in Vietnam's path towards independence."--Shane Strate"South East Asia Research 22, no. 4" (12/01/2014)

From the Inside Flap
"In this richly documented and judiciously argued book, Charles Keith has crafted a engaging account of what it was like to be Catholic in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Vietnam. He provides what no other scholar has: a nuanced and complex history of the political discord, social uncertainties, and spiritual aspirations that shaped Catholicism for millions of Vietnamese from the beginning of French colonial rule to the first years of national independence. Intelligent, detailed, and compelling, Catholic Vietnam is an important book." —J. P. Daughton, author of An Empire Divided: Religion, Republicanism, and the Making of French Colonialism, 1880-1914

"In Catholic Vietnam, Charles Keith challenges a deeply entrenched body of flawed conventional wisdom about the modern history of Vietnamese Catholicism. Free from the biases and tendentious assumptions that distorted scholarship on the topic during the Vietnam War era and armed with a massive arsenal of difficult-to-access primary sources in French and Vietnamese, Keith provides the most thorough and even-handed historical treatment currently available of the Vietnamese Catholic community under French rule, while telling a gripping story about a fascinating but neglected political and cultural process that he calls Catholic ‘decolonization.’ Beautifully written, exhaustively researched, and persuasively argued, Catholic Vietnam sets a new standard within the field." —Peter Zinoman, author of The Colonial Bastille: A History of Imprisonment in Vietnam, 1862-1940

“In this nuanced, wide-ranging, and lively account, Charles Keith establishes how Vietnamese Catholics positioned themselves and were perceived over time. Challenging binary and orthodox narratives, Keith’s meticulously researched book successfully interrogates and ultimately debunks notions of Catholicism’s inherent foreignness to Vietnam. Catholic Vietnam provides very important and timely contributions to the histories of Vietnam, of religion, and of French colonialism.” —Eric T. Major contribution to the history of Vietnam in the colonial period
By G. Dutton
This book is an extremely well-constructed, well-written, and illuminating history of the evolution of the Catholic church in Vietnam from the nineteenth century to the last years of French colonialism. The author has pulled together an impressive range of sources and used them to great effect to tell the story of the transformation of Vietnamese Catholicism into a religion with distinctly local political dimensions that resisted domination by French clerics as Vietnamese religious leaders emerged in their own right. This is a major contribution to the history of French colonialism in Vietnam, and an extremely important contribution to the history of Catholicism in Asia more broadly.

merits five stars despite some poor editing and occasional minor errors
By S. Darragh
This is one of those books whose subject matter, as well sustained by the author as it is, merits five stars despite some poor editing and occasional errors. It turn on its head many long held assumptions concerning Vietnamese Catholics and their role in society. He begins with the sentencing of three Central Vietnamese priests to Puolo Condore island for their activities in support of Tran Boi Chau's Go East movement in 1908. Wait, weren't the Catholic clergy all French? Apparently not. And these three were not even pro-French. Well, three out of how many? But now that Charles Keith has laid out his trap, he entices on onward, telling us that it was Portuguese and Spanish missionaries who brought Catholicism to Vietnam, then a divided state covering the northern half of today' boundaries. He's a bit cautious with Alexandre de Rhodes, the French Jesuit credited with developing the current Vietnamese writing system, pointing out that Rhodes 'likely' refined the efforts of earlier Portuguese missionaries. Likely indeed, given that the first dictionary Rhodes published was a Portuguese-Latin-Vietnamese version, not French. In any event, what is now the Quoc Ngu alphabet lay dormant as the Nguyen and Trinh clans warred and the Nguyen pushed south to govern a state known as Dang Trong. It's reemerged in the French colonial period as a useful tool to spread literacy, and ironically, later opposition to French colonialism.

Along with Rhodes, Keith must deal with the other great French churchman in Vietnam's history, Bishop Pierre Pigneau de Behaine.
In 1771 fiscal mismanagement in the Nguyen territories sparked a rebellion by three brothers from Tay Son in Central Vietnam. Over the next 31 years they established their own short lived dynasty whose capital was Quy Nhon. Pigneau was then running a seminary for native priests in Ha Tien, a Chinese ruled Nguyen vassal state on the Gulf of Siam. By 1777 the Tay Son armies had driven the Nguyen lords from their capital in modern Hue, and down to Saigon. The Tay Sons armies followed, took Saigon, and massacred all the Nguyen lord families save Phuc Anh, a fifteen year old nephew who fled to Ha Tien, where he met Pigneau de Behaine before being forced to fell to Phu Quoc, and thence to Siam. Pigneau decided to support Nguyen Anh's cause, and over some very rocky years became his military advisor, eventually traveling to France with Nguyen Anh's infant son, Prince Canh, to obtain a treaty between France and the Nguyen Court promising freedom for Catholic missionaries in exchange for military support. When French officials failed to honor that treaty, Pigneau supported the Nguyen cause with his own money, recruiting some 300 military, naval, and armaments technicians out of India. The Nguyen fortunes changed after more years of hard fighting, and in 1802 Nguyen Anh became Gia Long, emperor of a reunited and expanded Vietnam. The importance of Nguyen Anh's modest 'French' support would later be exaggerated by both French colonial and Vietnamese nationalist historiographers to serve their own ends. Gia Long did live up to his promises to Pigneau, but he also took care to make his very conservative Confucian second son, Minh Mang, his successor. It was Minh Mang who would declare Confucianism Vietnam's state cult, and set in motion the anti-Catholic edicts that would trigger the 1858 Franco-Spanish expedition. (note: a thorough evaluation of Pigneau's role ant its distortions can be found in James P. Daughton's article "Recasting Pigneau de Behaine" published in "Viet Nam Borderless Histories", editors Nhunh Tuyet Tran and Anthony Reid, Uni of Wisconsin Press, 2006).

Judging Minh Mang and his successors Thieu Tri and Tu Duc requires a sympathetic eye. All three clearly wished to forge a unified Vietnam free of ethnic and religious diversity. But Vietnam's Catholics, the majority of whom lived in the Red River Delta and were administered to by Spanish priests, were no more prone to religious syncretism than the Pope. Edicts were passed which local officials often ignored. Priests who were expelled often returned. And Minh Mang measures regarding the ethnic Chinese and Khmer populations touched raw nerves. Ironically, it was the desecration of a dead warlord's tomb on Minh Mang's orders that touched off a civil war. In it's wake, Father Pierre Borie was was arrested. In November 1838 he was executed. Four months later, the First Opium War broke out in China, giving Vietnam's emperor more reason to worry about Catholics. Attempts to enforce the laws only led to more foreign intervention, demanding the release of imprisoned priests. One such mission even involved the USS Constitution. These led to more executions and in 1858 a Franco-Spanish expedition landed at Danang, thereby opening the door to French colonial control and, as Keith points out, unleashing a wave of pogroms in northern and central Vietnam targeting Catholics.

Keith's best work is laying out the changes that French colonialism brought with it. He makes clear that while Catholic communities were in many instances obliged to support the French for their own survival, they remained Vietnamese to the core. Prominent Catholics denounced the French intervention for what it was: A thinly disguised act of economic self-interest. And the Vietnamese clergy would come to resent their French religious overlords, who unlike earlier foreign missionaries did not live among as they did, but expected higher standards of living. And, to the great surprise of this reader, the Vatican took notice and set out to reform Indochina's Catholic missions and put the Vietnamese clergy in charge. This started in 1893 with Pope Leo XIII, and continued with Pope Benedict XV, who saw the ties between the missionaries and colonial regimes as "un-Christian" and called for expansion in the ranks and roles of local clergy. Pope Pius XI went one step further in 1933 and consecrated the first Vietnamese; Bishop Jean Baptiste Nguyen Ba Tong, much to the disgust of the French colonial officials. Pius XI followed this up in the coming years with the naming of more Vietnamese bishops, to include Ngo Dien Diems older sibling Thuc, who for perhaps the first time in any western writing, Keith presents on his own merits, and not merely for association with his brother Diem. The end result Vietnam's Catholics now stood up within the church to identify themselves as both Catholic and Vietnamese. Long simmering accusations against abusive European missionary superiors emerged, and reforms demanded. With literacy in Quoc Ngu now spread beyond the Catholic clergy, complemented by an increased literacy in French, Vietnam's Catholic elites reexamined their place in society. It would be inaccurate to say they discovered nationalism. The great many had always been nationalists in the sense that they viewed the world through Vietnamese eyes. But they could now reexamine the political regime that governed Vietnam and decide for themselves where Vietnam's future lay. Unfortunately, the worldwide depression, World War II, and it aftermath drew lines in the sand. Ho Chi Minh's declaration of Vietnamese independence was supported by the overwhelming majority of Vietnam's Catholics, and several took position in his first government.

Over the next five years, Catholic support for the DRV faded, particularly in the north, where its Communist nature had become obvious. The largest Catholic presence was in the lower Red River Delta, specifically the dioceses of Phat Diem and Bui Chu. In late 1949 the French sent in a Vietnamese Paratroop officer to give the Bishop Le Huu Tu of Phat Diem and his counterpart an offer they couldn't refuse: Recognize Bao Dai's Associated State of Vietnam or fight. The bishops accepted the offer grudgingly but continued making public proclamations demanding full independence. Then, in the summer of 1951 the Viet Minh launched an offensive against Phat Diem and Bui Chu that was only beaten back with heavy losses that made it apparent that the Catholic militias on their own were outclassed. This was followed by Pope Pius XII's 1951 encyclical condemning communism, which triggered a pastoral letter by 15 of Vietnam's bishops declaring it impossible to be both a Catholic and a Communist. And with this line etched in stone, the fate of North Vietnam's Catholics was sealed. Two-thirds of them would flee to the south, bolstering Ngo Dien Diem supporters and the Republic of Vietnam.

great overview and excellent resource for teachers too!

As a biologist in the Bay Area for the last 15 years, I've tried to find a comprehensive guide to the area. There are books that cover plants and animals, but I wanted more. Now, I've found it! This book covers more information than you might think at first glance. It has information about wildlife and geology as well as other things to do in the area. It's great for people coming to visit and for those of us that already live here.

This book would also be a great resource for any field course for a variety of areas. There is a great intro on with information on tide-pool etiquette, brings dogs to beaches, watching wildlife, etc. I am thinking to use it for my intro biology course next semester.

I can't wait to look at the rest in the series!

BLIGH: William Bligh in the South Seas, by Anne Salmond

In Bligh, the story of the most notorious of all Pacific explorers is told through a new lens as a key episode in the history of the world, rather than simply of the West. Award-winning anthropologist Anne Salmond recounts with a fresh perspective the triumphs and disasters of William Bligh’s life in a riveting narrative that for the first time portrays the Pacific islanders as players. Beginning in 1777, when Bligh, at twenty-two, first arrived in Tahiti with Captain Cook, Salmond charts Bligh’s three Pacific voyages—and tells how they transformed lives on the islands as well as on board the ships and back in Europe. She sheds new insight into the mutiny aboard the Bounty—and on Bligh’s remarkable 3,000-mile journey across the Pacific in a small boat—through revelations from the raw, unguarded letters between him and his wife Betsy. This beautifully told story reveals Bligh for the first time, as an important ethnographer adding to the paradoxical legacy of this famed seaman, and it captures more definitively than ever the excitement, drama, and terror of these events.

From the Inside Flap
“Anne Salmond draws on her unrivalled knowledge of early Polynesian cultures to re-tell the extraordinary story of William Bligh's voyages and the mutiny on the Bounty. Salmond writes marvelously and brings the Pacific as well as the European protagonists to life, and thus her book situates Bligh in the Pacific more effectively than any previous attempt. Bligh reveals not a British history with an exotic setting but a genuinely cross-cultural history that remains thought-provoking to this day.”—Nicholas Thomas, author of Cook: The Extraordinary Voyages

“The notorious Captain Bligh and the Bounty mutiny have captivated audiences for two centuries. Although one might think that there is nothing new to be learned of Bligh and the Bounty, Anne Salmond surprises and engages us with her retelling of this epic tale. Bringing the nuanced perspective of a sensitive ethnographer of both the Polynesians and the British Navy, Salmond traces Bligh's character over the course of his storied and occasionally tragic career, beginning with his role on Captain Cook's famous third voyage. What emerges is a portrait of a complex personality, an Enlightenment gentleman sensitive to Tahitian culture, a commander who cared deeply about his crew and their ship, a loyal husband and father, yet someone prone to fits of temper and sudden rages. With an engaging narrative style, Salmond follows Bligh's voyages and encounters in the South Seas and elsewhere, not neglecting Fletcher Christian, Peter Heywood, and the many others whose lives were forever changed by the Bounty affair. Salmond has added another masterpiece to her already brilliant repertoire.”—Patrick V. Kirch, author of How Chiefs Became Kings: Divine Kingship and the Rise of Archaic States in Ancient Hawai’i

"Bligh is not only a splendid reappraisal of the Bounty's misunderstood captain; it is that and much more. Anne Salmond has produced an extraordinary account of Bligh’s voyage that simultaneously offers new perspectives on biography, exploration, encounters, and the vast Pacific itself. This is a masterful and engrossing work." —David Igler, University of California, Irvine

Iron Men In Wooden Ships

These were heroic times; in America they were swearing in a President! In France they were storming the Bastille. In the middle of the Pacific a legend was born.

Captain William Bligh. Here presented wonderfully and fairly by Anne Salmond. Telling us not only of the heroics of that small boat in the middle of that gigantic ocean, but building the foundation of the events which transpired. Bringing us the microcosm of the British sociey and what came together which led up to the mutiny, and what transpired afterwards.

Why did Christian revolt? Was Bligh really that tyrannical? Cook proved to be alot meaner and had no issues with his crews. Bligh did make it back to Britain in an unbelievable 47 day, 3600 mile voyage in a small boat. While with time the mutaneers settled on Pitcairn island and turned upon oneanother, Only one survived. Edward Christian , a lawyer defended the captued bunch of mutaneers. Some hung, others excused. Life in Polynesia.

Who was Bligh? Who was Christian? What were the times which fostered this mutiny? The book is beautifully composed. An interesting and fantastic story written with depth and great interpretation.

Reassessing a Legend
By Rob Hardy
When I first opened _Bligh: William Bligh in the South Seas_ (University of California Press), I went to the index to learn what it said about the Bligh I know. Marlon Brando was not listed, nor was Trevor Howard; the two had played Fletcher Christian and Bligh in the 1962 movie _Mutiny on the Bounty_. Clark Gable and Charles Laughton were not there for their roles in the 1935 movie. Not even Nordhoff and Hall were listed as the authors of the famous trilogy of books based on the mutiny. It was a bit of a surprise that within this big book's 500 pages there is little account of, or even commentary upon, the mutiny as it has most recently been presented to us, but as I read though, I realized that these sources of legend had no place in Anne Salmond's fine biography. She does allude to how the image of Bligh as sadistic commander has come down to us, but she gives authoritative evidence that the image is wrong. Bligh was a mix of high degrees of good and bad traits, and it seems as if circumstances conspired against him in the mutiny, and afterwards against his reputation. Salmond is a professor in New Zealand, and has written books about the discovery of Tahiti and about Captain James Cook, subjects essential to understanding Bligh. He is presented here in as full a picture as anyone is ever going to be able to draw, and there is much about the British and Tahitian cultures of the time, so that the context of the legend and the facts behind it can be better understood.

Bligh tended to get along well with the islanders his ships visited, and had a better understanding of them than any European of the time. He had a devoted wife and adored his two daughters. Bligh was not a flogging captain, or at least not as much as Cook and far less than other captains. Salmond even goes into statistics which show that he "flogged his men less often than almost any other British commander in the Pacific during this period." The movies get this wrong, probably because it is easy to show the brutality of the punishment, which was, of course, standard in the British navy at the time. His difficulty was that Bligh had interpersonal problems and would go on tirades with little provocation. One observer called these "violent tornadoes of temper," and Bligh might inexcusably belittle officers while their subordinates could hear, making accusations of incompetence or cowardice. After such a show, it mattered little that his rage would be short lived or that he would do the victim a kindness or ask him to dinner immediately thereafter. Salmond is careful to show that the Admiralty compounded the difficulty with the ship's overcrowding, lack of marines, and misscheduling which required a long Tahitian stay that undermined discipline. Originally, upon his return to England, Bligh had been celebrated as a hero; the Admiralty and the British government did not want his overthrow to remind their populace that Frenchmen at the time were busily overthrowing their own royalty. Some of the returned mutineers escaped hanging because of some clever legal work by law professor Edward Christian, brother of Fletcher. Edward Christian wrote an account of the mutiny, with a sadistic Bligh harassing an intimidated crew, and the Romanticists lapped it up. Fletcher Christian was sanctified as a freedom-loving hero, and Bligh was vilified as a symbol of despotic rule.

And there they remain today, in popular culture. Salmond's perceptive volume expands the tragedy of Bligh and the tragedy of the mutineers and gives insight into nautical power-broking and patronage as well as Bligh's astute observations of Polynesian culture when it was mysterious and unspoiled. Bligh's name has come down to us as synonymous with brutality, but Salmond admonishes us that it is all only "a triumph of rhetoric over reality." The rhetoric has continued to triumph for over two hundred years, and her book deserves to be the work that brings the reality back.

Bligh- A more complete understanding of the man
By James J.
With all the books available on Bligh, Ms. Salmond expands the general knowledge in depth and detail giving an insight to Bligh's strength of character, his flaws, and the experiences which shaped and formed his opinions which became his realities. A remarkable report which paints a more complete picture of the man, and of the important cultural traits in Polynesia of which he became not only familiar, but shaped his interactions with these people.
