Saints and Citizens: Indigenous Histories of Colonial Missions and Mexican California, by Lisbeth Haas

Saints and Citizens is a bold new excavation of the history of Indigenous people in California in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, showing how the missions became sites of their authority, memory, and identity. Shining a forensic eye on colonial encounters in Chumash, Luiseño, and Yokuts territories, Lisbeth Haas depicts how native painters incorporated their cultural iconography in mission painting and how leaders harnessed new knowledge for control in other ways. Through her portrayal of highly varied societies, she explores the politics of Indigenous citizenship in the independent Mexican nation through events such as the Chumash War of 1824, native emancipation after 1826, and the political pursuit of Indigenous rights and land through 1848.

Review
"Creative insights into the complex world of Indian and colonial relations that all students of American history should value."--Albert L. Hurtado"American Historical Review" (02/01/2015)

From the Inside Flap
"Lisbeth Haas tells a new, deeper history of Indians and colonists in California. Listening closely to the voices of native leaders, artisans, painters, and translators who labored in Spanish missions, she uncovers previously obscured places and forms of indigenous power in a brutal world of conquest, exploitation, and loss. Thinking broadly, she shows how Spanish and Mexican California were an integral part of a larger hemispheric story of colonial expansion, indigenous resistance, and contested borderlands.  A vastly important book." --Pekka Hämäläinen, author of The Comanche Empire

"Told with rare feeling as well as erudition, Saints and Citizens places native peoples squarely into the precarious history of freedom and survival, both as subjects and agents.  The sweep and specificity of this book are impressive: this is a major work by a leading scholar."
--William B. Taylor, Muriel McKevitt Sonne Professor of History, Emeritus, University of California, Berkeley

"Lisbeth Haas powerfully illuminates how Spanish missions became functioning parts of the indigenous geography of California, as native peoples like the Chumash and Luiseños transformed them into sacred and political spaces for their own practices, beliefs, authority, and historical narration.  Particular compelling is the depiction of native artisanship, translation, writing, and oral history in creating an 'indigenous archive' essential to understanding the story of colonial California." --Juliana Barr, author of Peace Came in the Form of a Woman: Indians and Spaniards in the Texas Borderlands

"Building on the historical traditions of the northern Mexican borderlands, Saints and Citizens offers a model of comparative ethnohistory that emphasizes the creation of indigenous colonial spaces and historical narration. Lisbeth Haas blends archival sources with imagery, dance, and ethnography to demonstrate the indigenous production of knowledge in ways that complicate the concepts of indigeneity, subjecthood, and citizenship in both the colonial and Mexican eras of California history." --Cynthia Radding, author of Landscapes of Power and Identity: Comparative Histories in the Sonoran Desert and the Forests of Amazonia from Colony to Republic

“‘Indigenous Histories’—the first words in the subtitle of Lisbeth Haas’s book—might, in other hands, indicate a collection of material about Indigenous populations. Instead, Haas turns the phrase into a verb, privileging Indian voices, art, music, stories, and testimonies as acts of sovereignty that will be heard, no matter how buried. Still we rise!” --Deborah A. Miranda, author of Bad Indians: A Tribal Memoir

A Carafe of Red, by Gerald Asher

Every wine has a story. In this collection of elegantly written essays from the past thirty years, updated with a new introduction and endnotes, renowned author Gerald Asher informs wine enthusiasts with insightful, engrossing accounts of wines from Europe and America that offer just as much for those who simply enjoy vivid evocations of people and places. Asher puts wine in its context by taking the reader on a series of discursive journeys that start with the carafe at his elbow. In his introduction, Asher says, “Wine . . . draws on everything and leads everywhere.” Whether the subject is a supposedly simple red wine shared in a Parisian café or a Napa Valley Cabernet tasted with its vintner, every essay in A Carafe of Red is as pleasurable as the wines themselves.

Review
"A terrific introduction to one of the greatest wine writers of our times. . . . Complexity [that's] easy to savor."--Lara Douglass"Wine & Spirits Magazine" (02/01/2012)

"Simply put, no one writes like Asher anymore, and 'A Carafe of Red' serves as a capable introduction to his style and his work. As a study in effective, entertaining, and efficient wine prose, few authors even come close to Asher's celebrated ability to lucidly summarize the heart and soul of his subjects in only a few well-written and well-paced sentences. In that way, 'A Carafe of Red' is a short masterclass in wine prose."--Joe Roberts"1WineDude.com" (12/01/2013)

"This is a number of charming collected essays on various aspects of wine by one of the wine world's most stylish writers, historians and wine lovers."--Dan Berger"The Press Democrat" (03/19/2014)

"Asher's discussion of the most memorable wine in his life makes the reader want to learn more while they are entertained in the process."--Conal Gregory"The Scotsman" (12/15/2012)

Wine lovers who read will like this
By Autamme_dot_com
If your enjoyment of wine is more than pure alcohol consumption and you are not adverse to drifting off into a bit of a travel daydream, this book might be a pleasant companion for you.

International wine expert, merchant and author Gerald Asher has taken many of his published articles over the decades and polished them up and presented them into an anthology of fine wine writings, presenting many detailed accounts of wines from Europe and the Americas. Yet this is not another "how-to" wine guide but essays built around a wine region or type. Of course, through reading the various essays, the reader stands to gain quite a bit of knowledge but it would be fair to say it would be more background, scene-setting than helping you determine that the '76 was a much better year than the '75 and the whys and wherefores behind that decision.

Reviewing such anthologies is hard work as the reader forms a personal connection to the book, or not, as the case may be. Certainly the underlying material is interesting, comprehensive, encompassing and more-ish in nature. The writing is more welcoming and suitable for the general reader than being elitist and closed - an impression you sometimes get when reading about wines. A fine balance has been reached and the material does not feel dumbed-down. It might not be too much to suggest that even those who like to read travelogues yet have no deep passion for wine might additionally find this book to be worthy of a read.

A few negatives? Well it depends on your expectations. This is a book of text. It is not full of colour photographs (a shame!) with the fine text spread around them. This is an exercise of reading rather than just consuming. Will the reader feel cheated? It depends on what they thought they were getting and such text-rich books are less common in today's visual society. Apposite pictures would have made things even better but the rich text manages to still convey the entire scene. Some books use pictures at the expense of the quality of the text, yet with books of this kind if there was even a risk of dilution then it is probably best they are not used.

So all in all, this is a good little book. It could be ideal for hunkering down on the sofa with a bottle by your side, reading whilst getting warm from a roaring fire. Or, of course, ideal reading material whilst on a journey somewhere. A good excuse to lose yourself for a while in good written company.

Controlling Contested Places: Late Antique Antioch and the Spatial Politics of Religious Controversy, by Christine Shepardson

From constructing new buildings to describing rival-controlled areas as morally and physically dangerous, leaders in late antiquity fundamentally shaped their physical environment and thus the events that unfolded within it. Controlling Contested Places maps the city of Antioch (Antakya, Turkey) through the topographically sensitive vocabulary of cultural geography, demonstrating the critical role played by physical and rhetorical spatial contests during the tumultuous fourth century. Paying close attention to the manipulation of physical places, Christine Shepardson exposes some of the powerful forces that structured the development of religious orthodoxy and orthopraxy in the late Roman Empire.

Theological claims and political support were not the only significant factors in determining which Christian communities gained authority around the Empire. Rather, Antioch’s urban and rural places, far from being an inert backdrop against which events transpired, were ever-shifting sites of, and tools for, the negotiation of power, authority, and religious identity. This book traces the ways in which leaders like John Chrysostom, Theodoret, and Libanius encouraged their audiences to modify their daily behaviors and transform their interpretation of the world (and landscape) around them. Shepardson argues that examples from Antioch were echoed around the Mediterranean world, and similar types of physical and rhetorical manipulations continue to shape the politics of identity and perceptions of religious orthodoxy to this day.

Review
"The synthesis presented in Controlling Contested Places is exciting and very welcome ... [Shepardson s] work provides a clear template for further inquiry about geography and memory beyond Antioch in the world of Late Antiquity, and useful tools to address them."--Edward Schoolman"Journal of Historical Geography" (05/08/2015)"

From the Inside Flap
“Shepardson provides an exciting study that reintroduces us to the physical space of the city of Antioch. She uncovers a new landscape defined by its physical shape and its cultural meaning while simultaneously revealing how fourth and fifth century Antiochenes understood, interpreted, and argued about their city. Controlling Contested Places then moves us closer to the late antique city actually experienced by those people who lived in it.”—Edward Watts is Alkiviadis Vassiliadis Endowed Chair and Professor of History at the University of California, San Diego

“Reading Libanius, Chrysostom, and Theodoret through the lenses of cultural geography, spatial analysis, and memory studies, Controlling Contested Places deftly reveals how these and other writers plotted the religious, ecclesiastical, and social tensions of late antique Antioch onto imagined geographies of the city and its hinterland.  Antioch—like contemporary Milan, Jerusalem, and Alexandria—emerges from Shepardson’s study as an idea and a place continually under construction, a past ever at the mercy of its present.”—Dennis Trout, Associate Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Missouri

“By addressing the elite control of place, both physical and conceptual, in both countryside and city, Shepardson puts a new spin on the process of ‘Christianization’. Delving into the worlds of social and cultural geography for her insights, here she opens up a rich and compelling landscape to the reader. This is an exciting new addition to the study of Antioch, Late Antiquity and, more broadly, religious controversy.”—Wendy Mayer is Research Fellow of Early Christian Studies in the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry, Australian Catholic University

Proactive Strategies for Protecting Species: Pre-Listing Conservation and the Endangered Species ActFrom University of California Press

Now forty years old, the Endangered Species Act (ESA) remains a landmark act in conservation and one of the world’s most comprehensive laws designed to prevent species extinctions and support recovery efforts for imperiled species. A controversial law and often subject to political attack, the ESA is successful overall but not without difficulties. Those who enforce the ESA, for example, struggle to achieve viable recovery goals for many species.

At the forefront of challenges is a reactive framework that sometimes leads to perverse incentives and legal battles that strain support and resources. Further, few species have been delisted. Proactive Strategies for Protecting Species explores the perspectives, opportunities, and challenges around designing and implementing pre-listing programs and approaches to species conservation.

This volume brings together conservation biologists, economists, private and government stakeholders, and others to create a legal, scientific, sociological, financial, and technological foundation for designing solutions that incentivize conservation action for hundreds of at-risk species—prior to their potential listing under the ESA.

This forward-thinking, innovative volume provides a roadmap for designing species conservation programs on the ground so they are effective and take place upstream of regulation, which will contribute to a reduction in lawsuits and other expenses that arise after a species is listed. Proactive Strategies for Species Protection is a guidebook for anyone anywhere interested in designing programs that incentivize environmental stewardship and species conservation.

"A breath of fresh air... This book represents the first concerted, pragmatic effort to examine how [PLC programs] might actually be accomplished in a market-based framework."--Robin S. Waples"BioScience" (11/30/2015)"

From the Inside Flap
"This book is an invitation to innovation, bristling with fresh ideas. Some suggestions may not work; others will surely move us forward. A must-read for those who are rethinking the future of the Endangered Species Act."—Bruce Babbitt, former United States Secretary of the Interior

"This is the first book I have seen that makes a real attempt to suggest ways to outflank the Endangered Species Act so that species preservation actually happens."—Randy Simmons, Utah State University, and coauthor of Wilderness and Political Ecology

"For those who agree that incurring the cost of upstream conservation is preferable to waiting for the Endangered Species Act to sound the alarm of pending species endangerment, this primer provides an important and pragmatic guide while also promoting responsible stewardship of the incredible natural resources entrusted to our care."—Jamie Rappaport Clark, Executive Director, Defenders of Wildlife

“There's a big idea at the heart of this book—the kind of big idea that promises to transform how we conduct the business of species and habitat conservation. Everyone wins when the public and private sectors work together to sustain wildlife and natural resources through the use of proactive incentives instead of only relying on regulation. These types of approaches are at the foundation of environmental health, economic opportunity, and cross-sectorial cooperation.” —Craig Hanson, Global Director of Food, Forests & Water at the World Resources Institute

"Donlan and his contributors have captured an essential insight: conservation works best when we take early and sustained action to protect species and ecosystems. This book will serve as an indispensable guide for those who want not only to save endangered species, but also to prevent those species from becoming endangered in the first place."—Peter Alagona, UC Santa Barbara, and author of After the Grizzly: Endangered Species and the Politics of Place in California

About the Author
C. Josh Donlan is director and founder of Advanced Conservation Strategies, an organization that makes livelihoods and environments better through science, human-centered design, and innovation. Cannabis: Evolution and Ethnobotany, by Robert C. Clarke, Mark D. Merlin

Cannabis: Evolution and Ethnobotany is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary exploration of the natural origins and early evolution of this famous plant, highlighting its historic role in the development of human societies. Cannabis has long been prized for the strong and durable fiber in its stalks, its edible and oil-rich seeds, and the psychoactive and medicinal compounds produced by its female flowers. The culturally valuable and often irreplaceable goods derived from cannabis deeply influenced the commercial, medical, ritual, and religious practices of cultures throughout the ages, and human desire for these commodities directed the evolution of the plant toward its contemporary varieties. As interest in cannabis grows and public debate over its many uses rises, this book will help us understand why humanity continues to rely on this plant and adapts it to suit our needs.

In doing so, they have produced a work that is thorough, globally ambitious, and carefully constructed. The extraordinary power and range of their cross-cultural perspectives are likely to elicit fresh consideration of familiar studies." —Richard Tucker, School of Natural Resources and Environment, University of Michigan

"Cannabis is one of the best, if not the best history of the extraordinary plant Cannabis sativa that I have read. It is encyclopedic in its scope, painstakingly documented, and well written. A must for libraries, cannabis scholars and the growing number of readers who are interested in this remarkable plant." —Lester Grinspoon, Emeritus Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and author of Marihuana Reconsidered and Marihuana, the Forbidden Medicine

The finest book on the origin, history and uses of Cannabis
By M. Backes
"Cannabis: Evolution and Ethnobotany" is completely comprehensive in its treatment of the topic. I have read dozens and dozens of books about cannabis, but none come close to matching this book's scope. What makes the book truly great is that it provides so much material that will be of interest to anyone intrigued by this multipurpose plant.

The book's authors, Robert Connell Clarke and Mark Merlin, bring decades of experience to this magnum opus. Because Clarke and Merlin have spent considerable time as field researchers, their experience with the plant on every continent informs their writing with "ground truth". And that's why I consider the work to be seminal.

I met Mark Merlin eighteen months ago and asked if he and Robert Clarke would consider letting me read this book as they prepared it for publication. They consented. Lucky me. This is a superb book and I simply loved reading it. I've actually read it a few times, because there is so much interesting and detailed material within.

Nearly every single aspect of how human beings use the cannabis plant is covered within: from discreet hemp cultivation in Japan to be woven into ritual garments for the Imperial Family to breeding of contemporary drug cultivars in the Netherlands and California. Each chapter introduces fascinating and compelling scholarship, illustrated by excellent photographs from Clarke's collection and very informative maps. One of the book's most interesting features is the examination of how cannabis has evolved into fiber and drug plants over the millennia. Clarke and Merlin propose a very persuasive and well-supported taxonomy for the plant.

As massive as the book is, I truly wish there was more, and that's my highest praise.

I bought this from an Amazon marketplace seller. There are a whole lot of 'FOTM' (funny only to family) anecdotes, less than I was hoping for about RS, and most disappointingly, not one picture.

Imaging Disaster: Tokyo and the Visual Culture of Japan's Great Earthquake of 1923, by Gennifer Weisenfeld

Focusing on one landmark catastrophic event in the history of an emerging modern nation—the Great Kanto Earthquake that devastated Tokyo and surrounding areas in 1923—this fascinating volume examines the history of the visual production of the disaster. The Kanto earthquake triggered cultural responses that ran the gamut from voyeuristic and macabre thrill to the romantic sublime, media spectacle to sacred space, mournful commemoration to emancipatory euphoria, and national solidarity to racist vigilantism and sociopolitical critique. Looking at photography, cinema, painting, postcards, sketching, urban planning, and even scientific visualizations, Weisenfeld demonstrates how visual culture has powerfully mediated the evolving historical understanding of this major national disaster, ultimately enfolding mourning and memory into modernization.

From the Inside Flap
Imaging Disaster is a rich social history of Japan’s Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Drawing on a kaleidoscopic range of images from the fine arts, magazines, cartoons, and other popular sources, Gennifer Weisenfeld has produced an original study of this catastrophic event from an art historical perspective. —Jonathan Reynolds, Barnard College

Imaging Disaster is an exhaustive and illuminating study of the visual culture generated by Japan’s most devastating natural disaster. Comprehensive in scope—covering photography, cinema, painting, postcards, sketches, urban planning, and even scientific models—Weisenfeld makes a compelling point that the massive profusion of visual representations that followed the quake must itself be considered an integral part of this tragic historical event.—Seiji Lippit, UCLA

About the Author
Gennifer Weisenfeld is Associate Professor in the Department of Art, Art History & Visual Studies at Duke University and the author of Mavo: Japanese Artists and the Avant-Garde, 1905-1931 (UC Press).

Weisenfeld's Book, IMAGING DISASTER: TOKYO AND THE VISUAL CULTURE OF JAPAN'S EARTHQUAKE
By Quiet Hut
The book is an analytically astute historical study not only of the unfolding events in Tokyo, but also about what kind of visual responses they inspired by producing posters, insets on papers, photographs, etc. The book tells us that for each catastrophic event like earthquake, responding to it by IMAGING not only records the event that is fleetingly disappearing, but also plays a cathartic role, and we are compelled to think that perhaps all acts of IMAGING are cathartic human statements.

Excellent book, but buy the hardcover version
By davisite
This is a fabulous resource, providing insights into key terms in theoretical ecology by experts in the field. This is the just the sort of book that one might turn to, time and time again, and I fully expect to be doing so.

However, note that the Kindle version does not contain page numbers. If you want to cite anything from the book, better to spend the extra money for the hardcover. I mention this because I don't want others to find out the hard way.

Making Chastity Sexy: The Rhetoric of Evangelical Abstinence Campaigns, by Christine J. Gardner

Even though they are immersed in sex-saturated society, millions of teens are pledging to remain virgins until their wedding night. How are evangelical Christians persuading young people to wait until marriage? Christine J. Gardner looks closely at the language of the chastity movement and discovers a savvy campaign that uses sex to “sell” abstinence. Drawing from interviews with evangelical leaders and teenagers, she examines the strategy to shift from a negative “just say no” approach to a positive one: “just say yes” to great sex within marriage. Making Chastity Sexy sheds new light on an abstinence campaign that has successfully recast a traditionally feminist idea—“my body, my choice”—into a powerful message, but one that Gardner suggests may ultimately reduce evangelicalism’s transformative power. Focusing on the United States, her study also includes a comparative dimension by examining the export of this evangelical agenda to sub-Saharan Africa.

From the Inside Flap
“Students of rhetoric should appreciate Making Chastity Sexy for the sophistication of its argument about 'counter-public' advocacy. Others will welcome it for keen insights about the recent history of American evangelicals and, even more, Christine Gardner's striking comparisons between chastity rhetoric in the United States and in East Africa.”—Mark Noll, author of The New Shape of World Christianity: How American Experience Reflects Global Faith

“Christine Gardner has written a terrific book that moves beyond tired survey research-based studies to give us a rich and engaging in-depth analysis of the language through which evangelical abstinence movements attempt to persuade teenagers to refrain from having sex. We learn not only about programs in the United States but also in Africa where abstinence has been advocated to prevent HIV/AIDS. Making Chastity Sexy shows clearly the power of rhetoric – and its unanticipated consequences.” —Robert Wuthnow, Princeton University

"Written in an engaging, often journalistic style, Making Chastity Sexy offers compelling insight into the rhetorical strategies of contemporary evangelical sexual abstinence campaigns and illuminates a remarkable variety of responses to these campaigns by teens and young adults." —Angela G. Ray, Associate Professor of Communication Studies, Northwestern University

Making Chastity Sexy
By C. Kent
If we are fish, and our culture is the water we swim in, Christine Gardner may have jumped out of the fish bowl to give us a candid examination of the culture of evangelical abstinence campaigns in Making Chastity Sexy. Her work explores the rhetoric that is used to promote abstinence among evangelical youth, both in the United States and in sub-Saharan Africa. By examining the ways that evangelicals both appropriate secular culture and seek to go against it, Gardner reveals the strengths and weaknesses created in young people's understandings of abstinence, sex, and purity.
Published this year, the book includes research done within the past decade wherein contemporary evangelical and secular cultures have explored new ways of talking about sex and sexuality. In the secular world, the epidemic of HIV/AIDS and the rise in teen pregnancy have spurred discussion on how to talk to teens about sex. Evangelicals have answered this with a call to abstinence. In her research, Gardner has sought to understand the ways that evangelical abstinence campaigns are redefining abstinence to convince young people to forgo sex until marriage. She discovered an evangelical culture that emphasizes individualistic incentives (such as better sex in the future or avoiding disease) in exchange for sexual purity. Both in the United States and sub-Saharan Africa, personal agency had to be redefined to make the call to abstinence relevant to young people. However, there was a difference in the ultimate motives and methods of abstinence in the different contexts. In America, playing to a highly individualistic culture, abstinence was sold as self-preservation, as a way of ensuring better sex later (51). In Africa, where "later" is never guaranteed, abstinence gained force as a call to obey God and as an expression of true faith in Christ (161).
Gardner successfully uses a combination of personal interviews and careful observations to give a glimpse into the ways that modern evangelicals are defining and redefining the call to abstain. She uses the comparison of abstinence campaigns in two distinct social contexts to shine light on the successes and shortcomings of each method. However, it would have added to her argument if she had expanded her evaluation to better include the ways that these separate understandings are influencing each other, if at all, rather than just giving a comparison between them.
Despite this, Gardner gives a balanced and well-informed description of how contemporary evangelicals are appropriating secular methods to promote abstinence. She acknowledges the strength that this gives their arguments, while at the same time pointing out the way it may eventually weaken them. Her study of evangelical rhetoric is timely and well-delivered, especially in a religious culture struggling to define itself both for itself and the world.

Making Chastity Sexy: Abstinence at the Expense of the Gospel?
By nhartmann
Christine J. Gardner, a Christian herself, approaches the American abstinence movement with a critical eye. Drawing from the observations of three American abstinence campaigns and the methods and narratives they adopt, she asserts that these campaigns have worked to re-brand abstinence as something sexy.

By inserting pop culture into the campaign, Christian evangelical groups have successfully made chastity desirable for millions of teens who now pledge to remain virgins until marriage. The movement sells abstinence by focusing its attention on sex within the bounds of marriage, a traditionally Biblical notion. While this is an effective strategy to attract teens, Gardner also warns that the argument "subtly shifts the nature of evangelicalism away from sacrifice and suffering to self-gratification" (p 18). Because the movement has co-opted the secular culture to appeal to a greater majority, not just Christians, Gardner's observations reveal the problems teens face when striving for Biblical abstinence without fully committing themselves to Christ first. Are Christian groups doing good by drawing so many teens to a chaste sexiness, or do they promote abstinence at the expense of the Gospel?

Making Chastity Sexy
By Heather Kaufmann
In her book, Gardner offers us a highly sophisticated, in-depth critique of the phenomenon of American evangelical abstinence campaigns. She challenges the methods these campaigners use to "sell chastity," namely by selling great sex (later). Rather than center its message on a Biblical standard of God's commandment that we abstain from sex outside the bounds of marriage, it hones in on the much more secular view that all good things come to those who wait. An evangelical Christian herself, Gardner gives a compelling critique of an occurrence within her own culture, causing us to think critically about the way we approach the issue of abstinence.

"Overall, the evangelical abstinence campaigns do not address the challenges of singleness," she says, "or homosexuality" and they "present a limited and distorted view that marriage is all about self-fulfilling sex" (13). By promising great sex later, evangelical abstinence campaigns fail to address or even recognize the fact that not all people marry nor are fulfilled by sex. But Gardner acknowledges another approach in her study of abstinence rhetoric in Kenya and Rwanda, where "young people emphasize that pleasing God is an end in itself" (20). The key difference here is a cultural one, the difference between the value of freedom and the value of duty, reminding us that we are always limited by the culture we live in. This makes Gardner's book a particularly relevant and worthwhile read as it challenges our treatment of abstinence and calls us back to what the Scriptures really tell us.
