Even though they are immersed in sex-saturated society, millions of teens are pledging to remain virgins until their wedding night. How are evangelical Christians persuading young people to wait until marriage? Christine J. Gardner looks closely at the language of the chastity movement and discovers a savvy campaign that uses sex to sell” abstinence. Drawing from interviews with evangelical leaders and teenagers, she examines the strategy to shift from a negative just say no” approach to a positive one: just say yes” to great sex within marriage. Making Chastity Sexy sheds new light on an abstinence campaign that has successfully recast a traditionally feminist ideamy body, my choice”into a powerful message, but one that Gardner suggests may ultimately reduce evangelicalism’s transformative power. Focusing on the United States, her study also includes a comparative dimension by examining the export of this evangelical agenda to sub-Saharan Africa.

From the Inside Flap
Students of rhetoric should appreciate Making Chastity Sexy for the sophistication of its argument about 'counter-public' advocacy. Others will welcome it for keen insights about the recent history of American evangelicals and, even more, Christine Gardner's striking comparisons between chastity rhetoric in the United States and in East Africa.”Mark Noll, author of The New Shape of World Christianity: How American Experience Reflects Global Faith
Christine Gardner has written a terrific book that moves beyond tired survey research-based studies to give us a rich and engaging in-depth analysis of the language through which evangelical abstinence movements attempt to persuade teenagers to refrain from having sex. We learn not only about programs in the United States but also in Africa where abstinence has been advocated to prevent HIV/AIDS. Making Chastity Sexy shows clearly the power of rhetoric and its unanticipated consequences.” Robert Wuthnow, Princeton University
"Written in an engaging, often journalistic style, Making Chastity Sexy offers compelling insight into the rhetorical strategies of contemporary evangelical sexual abstinence campaigns and illuminates a remarkable variety of responses to these campaigns by teens and young adults." Angela G. Ray, Associate Professor of Communication Studies, Northwestern University

Making Chastity Sexy
By C. Kent
If we are fish, and our culture is the water we swim in, Christine Gardner may have jumped out of the fish bowl to give us a candid examination of the culture of evangelical abstinence campaigns in Making Chastity Sexy. Her work explores the rhetoric that is used to promote abstinence among evangelical youth, both in the United States and in sub-Saharan Africa. By examining the ways that evangelicals both appropriate secular culture and seek to go against it, Gardner reveals the strengths and weaknesses created in young people's understandings of abstinence, sex, and purity.
Published this year, the book includes research done within the past decade wherein contemporary evangelical and secular cultures have explored new ways of talking about sex and sexuality. In the secular world, the epidemic of HIV/AIDS and the rise in teen pregnancy have spurred discussion on how to talk to teens about sex. Evangelicals have answered this with a call to abstinence. In her research, Gardner has sought to understand the ways that evangelical abstinence campaigns are redefining abstinence to convince young people to forgo sex until marriage. She discovered an evangelical culture that emphasizes individualistic incentives (such as better sex in the future or avoiding disease) in exchange for sexual purity. Both in the United States and sub-Saharan Africa, personal agency had to be redefined to make the call to abstinence relevant to young people. However, there was a difference in the ultimate motives and methods of abstinence in the different contexts. In America, playing to a highly individualistic culture, abstinence was sold as self-preservation, as a way of ensuring better sex later (51). In Africa, where "later" is never guaranteed, abstinence gained force as a call to obey God and as an expression of true faith in Christ (161).
Gardner successfully uses a combination of personal interviews and careful observations to give a glimpse into the ways that modern evangelicals are defining and redefining the call to abstain. She uses the comparison of abstinence campaigns in two distinct social contexts to shine light on the successes and shortcomings of each method. However, it would have added to her argument if she had expanded her evaluation to better include the ways that these separate understandings are influencing each other, if at all, rather than just giving a comparison between them.
Despite this, Gardner gives a balanced and well-informed description of how contemporary evangelicals are appropriating secular methods to promote abstinence. She acknowledges the strength that this gives their arguments, while at the same time pointing out the way it may eventually weaken them. Her study of evangelical rhetoric is timely and well-delivered, especially in a religious culture struggling to define itself both for itself and the world.

Making Chastity Sexy: Abstinence at the Expense of the Gospel?
By nhartmann
Christine J. Gardner, a Christian herself, approaches the American abstinence movement with a critical eye. Drawing from the observations of three American abstinence campaigns and the methods and narratives they adopt, she asserts that these campaigns have worked to re-brand abstinence as something sexy.
By inserting pop culture into the campaign, Christian evangelical groups have successfully made chastity desirable for millions of teens who now pledge to remain virgins until marriage. The movement sells abstinence by focusing its attention on sex within the bounds of marriage, a traditionally Biblical notion. While this is an effective strategy to attract teens, Gardner also warns that the argument "subtly shifts the nature of evangelicalism away from sacrifice and suffering to self-gratification" (p 18). Because the movement has co-opted the secular culture to appeal to a greater majority, not just Christians, Gardner's observations reveal the problems teens face when striving for Biblical abstinence without fully committing themselves to Christ first. Are Christian groups doing good by drawing so many teens to a chaste sexiness, or do they promote abstinence at the expense of the Gospel?

Making Chastity Sexy
By Heather Kaufmann
In her book, Gardner offers us a highly sophisticated, in-depth critique of the phenomenon of American evangelical abstinence campaigns. She challenges the methods these campaigners use to "sell chastity," namely by selling great sex (later). Rather than center its message on a Biblical standard of God's commandment that we abstain from sex outside the bounds of marriage, it hones in on the much more secular view that all good things come to those who wait. An evangelical Christian herself, Gardner gives a compelling critique of an occurrence within her own culture, causing us to think critically about the way we approach the issue of abstinence.
"Overall, the evangelical abstinence campaigns do not address the challenges of singleness," she says, "or homosexuality" and they "present a limited and distorted view that marriage is all about self-fulfilling sex" (13). By promising great sex later, evangelical abstinence campaigns fail to address or even recognize the fact that not all people marry nor are fulfilled by sex. But Gardner acknowledges another approach in her study of abstinence rhetoric in Kenya and Rwanda, where "young people emphasize that pleasing God is an end in itself" (20). The key difference here is a cultural one, the difference between the value of freedom and the value of duty, reminding us that we are always limited by the culture we live in. This makes Gardner's book a particularly relevant and worthwhile read as it challenges our treatment of abstinence and calls us back to what the Scriptures really tell us.
