To Repair the World: Paul Farmer Speaks to the Next Generation (California Series in Public Anthropology), by Paul Farmer

Here, for the first time, is a collection of short speeches by the charismatic doctor and social activist Paul Farmer. One of the most passionate and influential voices for global health equity and social justice, Farmer encourages young people to tackle the greatest challenges of our times. Engaging, often humorous, and always inspiring, these speeches bring to light the brilliance and force of Farmer’s vision in a single, accessible volume.

A must-read for graduates, students, and everyone seeking to help bend the arc of history toward justice, To Repair the World:

• Challenges readers to counter failures of imagination that keep billions of people without access to health care, safe drinking water, decent schools, and other basic human rights;

• Champions the power of partnership against global poverty, climate change, and other pressing problems today;

• Overturns common assumptions about health disparities around the globe by considering the large-scale social forces that determine who gets sick and who has access to health care;

• Discusses how hope, solidarity, faith, and hardbitten analysis have animated Farmer’s service to the poor in Haiti, Peru, Rwanda, Russia, and elsewhere;

• Leaves the reader with an uplifting vision: that with creativity, passion, teamwork, and determination, the next generations can make the world a safer and more humane place.

From the Inside Flap
“Paul Farmer’s deserved fame as global health expert, medical anthropologist, and advocate for the poor and the marginal centers on his moral commitment to doing good in the world and on the extraordinary influence of his personal call to a generation of young men and women to make the same remarkable commitment. Here are the words, the stories, the passion, the humor, the humanity— vulnerable and powerful—that constitute Paul’s magic. Here is Paul at those special moments when we want and need a moral exemplar, calling us to do what good we can for those who have nothing, who are broken, who are left behind, who are sick and disabled, who need to be accompanied, and whose betterment betters us. Against the selfishness of the market model and the deadening cynicism of the media, here is straight talk about why, as the song goes, “you’ve got to serve somebody,” why caregiving and doing good really do matter to the world and to each of us.”—Arthur Kleinman, Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University

“Paul Farmer has a knack for persuading an audience to participate in his lectures, whether aloud or in silence. In other words, he never bores his audience. The liveliness of his talks comes in part from his delivery, but also from the qualities of the lectures themselves: the freshness of their ideas, their wit, and their passion. And these, thankfully, are qualities which this collection preserves.”—Tracy Kidder, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Soul of a New Machine, Among Schoolchildren, Mountains Beyond Mountains, and other titles.

“Paul Farmer is the most compelling voice for justice in a generation. In this volume are the stories and insights that have helped thousands of students imagine—and fight for—a better world. Read this to be inspired. Read this to learn. Most importantly, when you’re done, give this book to a friend and join the movement for health equity.”—Jonny Dorsey, cofounder of FACE AIDS and Global Health Corps

“This collection of speeches brings us close to Paul Farmer in a way that scholarly publications can’t. In these pages, I hear Paul’s voice clearly: his tenderness, his anger, his passion for justice, the incendiary sense of humor that has regularly doubled me over with laughter for twenty-five years—and often made me worry for Paul’s safety, as he aimed his barbs at the uncaring power holders of this world. Paul speaks directly to young people grappling with big decisions: about the values they will live by, the work they will choose, where their responsibility for other people begins and ends. But these questions concern all of us. And, for anyone struggling with these issues, I can’t imagine a more challenging yet inspiring guide than Paul Farmer.”—Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank Group, former President of Dartmouth College, cofounder of Partners In Health.

“The fingerprints of Dr. Paul Farmer are everywhere in the world. I have seen them firsthand in Haiti, Rwanda, and right here in the United States. Whenever there is a need, Paul is the first guy out the door. After all, curing or repairing the world is ambitious and tough work, but one can’t help feeling more optimistic about our fate knowing Dr. Farmer is on the job. In his new book, you get more of an insight into this modern life hero—what makes him tick, his frailties, and what he worries about at night, long after most of the world is asleep. We also learn what inspires him, and the answer may surprise you.

Paul is my friend, and I have long wondered about the answers to some of these questions, yet never had the opportunity to ask. I also know that Paul will be mad at me for calling him a hero. His humility is legendary and one hundred percent genuine. Medical students all over the world have told me they entered our shared profession because of Dr. Paul Farmer. Now, it is time for the rest of the planet to be inspired, and in these pages they learn what it takes To Repair the World.”—Sanjay Gupta, Chief Medical Correspondent at CNN and Professor of Neurosurgery at Emory University School of Medicine

thinking in fractals
By 2bpoet
Paul Farmer is to me the greatest thinker and do-er in medicine in our times. He has gotten a team of great people to deliver quality care, REALLY quality care, to the poorest people in the world, for diseases that many hard-hearted economic-minded folks thought could never be treated due to scarcity models of thinking. What I love about Dr. Farmer is the way he is filled with expert mercy and real hope. NOT optimism, but hope. And he inspires us all, with the way he SEES how it can be done.
I was in the Peace Corps in Paraguay, and just a bit ahead of his cycling between Harvard and Haiti. So I know whereof he speaks, and what he has accomplished. I have spent my career practicing medicine in the USA, and I know that all our patients need the same things-- the same help from physicians, and improvements in delivery of care. It gives me abiding joy to see his work, to hear his words. I want to give this book to every young person I know. WE CAN do things better!

Paul Farmer Explains How Medicine Should and Can be Practiced Anywhere
By Thomas Pretlow, M.D.
This book contains a series of Dr. Paul Farmer's commencement addresses at many very prestigious medical schools and schools of public health. Consistent with Paul Farmer's many previous publications, his message is that our mission on earth should be to emphasize the "option for the poor." His approach is excellent and relatively inexpensive. He deplores the transformation of healthcare in the United States from being a ministry focused on helping and healing the sick into an industry focused primarily on money. As one who entered medical school over half a century ago, I certainly identify with his message and have seen medical practice in the United States transformed by the medical-industrial complex into what sometimes amounts to no more than organized extortion.

A passionate doctor speaks about global health
By G'ma
Paul Farmer presents his outlook in a series of Commencement speeches, addressing the need to address poverty and inequality around the world. His experience in many countries with Partners in Health gives him authority to speak about global health issues and the inadequate measures to solve these problems. He presents his ideas with humor, eloquence and passion. However since it is a series of speeches, it can be repetitive and I learned more from his previous book, Haiti After the Earthquake, that described the challenges of that country in surviving after the devastation brought by the earthquake. His philosophy comes through with more detail in the Haiti book.

Steep: The Precipitous Rise of the Tea Party, by Lawrence Rosenthal, Christine Trost

In the Spring of 2009, the Tea Party emerged onto the American political scene. In the wake of Obama’s election, as commentators proclaimed the “death of conservatism,” Tax Day rallies and Tea Party showdowns at congressional town hall meetings marked a new and unexpected chapter in American conservatism. Accessible to students and general readers, Steep: The Precipitous Rise of the Tea Party brings together leading scholars and experts on the American Right to examine a political movement that electrified American society. Topics addressed by the volume’s contributors include the Tea Party’s roots in earlier mass movements of the Right and in distinctive forms of American populism and conservatism, the significance of class, race and gender to the rise and successes of the Tea Party, the effect of the Tea Party on the Republican Party, the relationship between the Tea Party and the Religious Right, and the contradiction between the grass-roots nature of the Tea Party and the established political financing behind it. Throughout the volume, authors provide detailed and often surprising accounts of the movement’s development at local and national levels. In an Epilogue, the Editors address the relationship between the Tea Party and the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The Tea Party may not be what you think
By Mal Warwick
If you know nothing about the Tea Party other than what you've picked up from the daily news and a magazine article here and there, chances are excellent that you'll learn a great deal from reading Steep. Here are just a few of the insights I gained from this superb collection of scholarly articles that examine the Tea Party from the front, the back, upside down, and sideways:

There is, really, no such thing as "The Tea Party." The term encompasses thousands of organizations at the national, statewide, and local levels that at any given time may well be found squabbling with one another about ideology, tactics, or just plain personality differences. I knew about the proliferation of groups but not about the diversity of views among them.
The Tea Party phenomenon first surfaced less than a month after Barack Obama's inauguration as President in 2009 -- yes, less than four years ago -- as what one scholar calls a "test marketing" campaign backed by money from the Koch Brothers and mainstream Republican operatives such as former Congressman Dick Armey, which we all knew very well at the time. However, the movement spawned by this intentional investment in destabilizing the fledgling Obama Administration grew so quickly and with such spontaneity that its original backers soon lost control. Whatever else it might be, the Tea Party is a grassroots phenomenon.
Unlike the Christian Right before it, the Tea Party brought few new voters into the Republican column. As several of the authors in Steep make clear from their studies of a wide variety of poll results, the Tea Party is populated largely by Right-Wing Republicans who usually vote, anyway. (They also tend to be white males at or nearing retirement age.) The Tea Party brought passion to the Republican grassroots base, providing the necessary motivation to draw more foot-soldiers to the conservative cause.
The old John Birch Society, which we all thought had gone the way of the Cult of Isis in the 1960s after William F. Buckley, Jr. consigned it to purgatory, somehow managed to resuscitate itself and become engaged in Tea Party activities. So did former leaders of the White Citizens Councils, the militia movement, and other assorted cranks, kooks, and eccentrics and the delusions they brought with them. Since nearly one-half (44%) of Tea Party adherents professed to believe that Barack Obama is a Muslim and was not born in the United States, using the term delusional is not out of line.
The most intriguing chapter in Steep is University of Michigan political science and women's studies professor Lisa Disch's, in which she "advances a counterintuitive argument: The Tea Party movement is sparked, in part, by the threat its supporters perceive to their share in two key programs of the liberal welfare state [i.e., Social Security and Medicare]. Tea Party politics is conservative, but its supporters' material commitments and even aspects of their rhetoric place them in a liberal genealogy." Disch argues that, during its first two decades, Social Security was explicitly racialized -- farmworkers and domestic workers were specifically excluded from benefits (and guess who they meant by that!) -- and that for decades afterward Social Security was seen as largely a benefit to white people, even after the coverage was broadened. "This makes Tea Party mobilization a `white citizenship' movement: action in defense of material benefits that confer `racial standing' in a polity that purports to deny precisely that -- special standing based on race . . . [T]he Tea Party movement belongs to liberal America even as Tea Party rhetoric denounces liberalism and liberals denounce Tea Partiers."

Since I'm not bound by the strictures of academic "objectivity" (whatever that is), I can sum up all this information with my own conclusion: The Tea Party is the latest and the most extreme expression of the Right-Wing Republican movement that has been growing since its inception in the 1940s and 1950s in McCarthyite anti-Communism, the John Birch Society, and Southern opposition to civil rights, and in the backlash to the New Left, feminism, and the anti-war movement. Though the Tea Party is heterogeneous in many ways, and its focus nationally has been on advancing the Republican agenda of small government and rolling back taxes, the overwhelming majority of its adherents also embrace the social politics of the Christian Right (anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-women's rights) and the suppressed but all too real racial resentment that has been the centerpiece of the Republican Party's Southern Strategy since the days of Richard Nixon.

As I write this, however, I wonder whether anyone but historians and political scientists will care much about the Tea Party five years, or even a year, from now. It remains to be seen what impact the Republican losses of 2012 will have on the spirit and the cohesion of the Tea Party.

Steep is a product of the Berkeley Center for Right-Wing Studies at the University of California's flagship campus, edited by Lawrence Rosenthal and Christine Trost, the Center's director and associate director, respectively. More power to them!

EXCELLENT BOOK
By Shirley H. Andrews
If you wonder what and who is the "tea party"? how did it develop? what is it's future? then STEEP will answer your questions. The book is composed of a variety of easily readable chapters by expert scholars. I highly recommend it. First I read the Introduction - that's a MUST - and from there I was able to find the chapters which particularly interested me. Be sure to read the Epilogue.

The authors' reasoning runs like this: President Obama is black
By John J. Olson
The authors' reasoning runs like this: President Obama is black. The TEA Party opposes President Obama. Therefore, they conclude that the TEA Party opposes President Obama because he is black.

But, is the TEA Party primarily concerned with race? No, as the name Taxed Enough Already implies, it's main issue is fiscal. Or, does the TEA Party discriminate by race? No, they welcome adherents without regard to race. They also support non-white candidates for office.

A supposedly racist political party without a racist platform, and which does not practice racial discrimination, can exist only in the imagination of left-wing college professors like the authors. You don't have to have a PhD to be that dumb, but it helps.

In this classic analysis of travel and sightseeing, author Dean MacCannell brings social scientific understandings to bear on tourism in the postindustrial age, during which the middle class has acquired leisure time for international travel.

In The Tourist—now with a new introduction framing it as part of a broader contemporary social and cultural analysis—the author examines notions of authenticity, high and low culture, and the construction of social reality around tourism.

"The Tourist is one of those books that can be best enjoyed for its heuristic value, for the questions it raises as much as for the answers it offers." -- Anatole Broyard, New York Times

"More than a perceptive, entertaining discussion of tourists and tourism [The Tourist] is also a skillful blend of structuralist thought. . . . "Travellers seek authentic Hungarian peasant's dinner"
By Bob Newman
All around the world, especially in those domains inhabited by readers of Lonely Planet publications, a fine (or sometimes not so fine) distinction is drawn between "tourists" and "travellers". Almost always, "tourists" are "them", while "travellers" are "us". Tourists are somebody you can look down on, from the height of your greater awareness, cultural sensitivity, or superior poverty. In the old days, the term "pilgrim" described not only people who went to places like Mecca, Jerusalem or Rome, but also those on the "road of life". It seems to me that all travellers are tourists and vice-versa. Anthropologists too are just tourists with a more professional attitude, intent on telling others what they have found in their in-depth investigations and placing it in an academic framework. If you want to get to the bottom of this whole topic---with all the various ramifications---then you must read MacCannell's book, an essay in the (OK, somewhat arcane) field of the Anthropology of Tourism. It is not a bedtime reading book, but will stimulate plenty of thought.
The author takes the tourist as a model of modern man. He engages in a very effective piece of structural analysis; more effective in my opinion than any ever created by the Old Master, Claude Levi-Strauss. A reader of THE TOURIST will come away having understood everything, not totally baffled by mountains of jargon. The pre-modern world has not disappeared, it has been turned into zillions of tourist attractions. We, the seekers, pilgrims, or, if you like, the tourists, try to get close to the roots of our civilization, to our own origins, by visiting and looking at packaged versions of the past. Where pre-modern societies still exist to some extent, for example, among the hill tribes of Thailand, tourists make great efforts to visit them and, significantly, try their utmost to ensure that their visits are not "packaged" but "real". The tourist wants to penetrate and share the lives of "others", others who are so distinct from ourselves. Tourist satisfaction may be directly correlated to how "authentic" the experience seems to the visitors. That's why having the authentic Hungarian peasant's dinner is important. Unfortunately, you can't really share that dinner if you are travelling with forty other pilgrims in search of authenticity on a large bus. But advertising, as always, can work wonders! Fake authenticity has become the norm.
MacCannell discusses such serious topics as "commodity and symbol", "cultural productions and work groups" and how these relate to work. In subsequent chapters, entitled "Sightseeing and Social Structure", "The Paris Case: Origins of Alienated Leisure", "Staged Authenticity", "A Semiotic of Attraction", "The Ethnomethodology of Sightseers", and "Structure, Genuine and Spurious", the author covers a wide variety of fascinating subjects in a brilliant book which will definitely succeed in making you view tourism in a different way forever afterwards. The pages are crammed with insights, analysis, good examples and interesting observations. This book is the classic work of the Anthropology of Tourism. If you are starting out in the field or are just interested in thinking about tourism in modern life, this is your book. If you are a tourist along the byways of Amazon.com, you might consider making a stop here. You will not find less than an authentic gem.

One of the more accessible books on the topic
By Elizabeth R
What I liked about MacCannell's book was how easy it was to read- now, granted, I was forced to plow through this in a week, so I didn't get to savor it- but I really felt like I understood far more than I usually do- like the book had enough of substance to say that it wasn't necessary to obscure the ideas with jargon.
It seemed like in many ways this was a rebuttal to Daniel Boorstin's "The Image: A Guide to Pseudo Events in America" , which presents a fairly elitist distinction between traveller and tourist. MacCannell expressely mentions Boorstin's ideas and decries them as being counterproductive- that we'd all like to elevate ourselves above the majority, but are mostly deceiving ourselves that this distinction is true.
Also, some very interesting stuff in here about how a sight is established- how it is marked- the interplay of markers and signs. His work on Staged Authenticity is also quite compelling- the idea of Front, Back, and Reality- spaces where everyone can go, restricted spaces that are still modified knowing outsiders will pass through, and spaces that are authentic.
His examples involving Paris are especially interesting. I'd recommend checking out this AND the Boorstin.

Unqual chapters...
By A Customer
Tourism is an interesting topic for a structural analysis and this is the goal of MacCannell's analysis, citing Levi-Strauss and Roland Barthes right from the beginning. The introduction of the book fascinated me and kept my going. There the author illustrates a variety of interesting thoughts in relation to Marx, sometimes Walter Benjamin and Levi-Strauss. But in comparison with several of the chapters to come (not all), the philosophical level does not always keep up. Some of them content themselves to describe what the reader already knows - with little philosophical output. An example: the third chapter of the book is about tourism in Paris at the time of 1900. A very good topic. But the author limits himself with the interpretation of a Baedeker's Travel Guide, not looking or mentioning other sources in THE city of tourism as Paris was at that time. A combination with literature for example of the same time - where tourists play an important part - would have been much more lucrative. The same with chapter 5, though chapter 6 about a "Semiotics of Tourism" gets back to the level of the introduction. Well... Theses are the reasons for three stars.

Augustine of Hippo: A Biography, by Peter Brown

This classic biography was first published forty-five years ago and has since established itself as the standard account of Saint Augustine's life and teaching.

The remarkable discovery of a considerable number of letters and sermons by Augustine cast fresh light on the first and last decades of his experience as a bishop. These circumstantial texts have led Peter Brown to reconsider some of his judgments on Augustine, both as the author of the Confessions and as the elderly bishop preaching and writing in the last years of Roman rule in north Africa. Brown's reflections on the significance of these exciting new documents are contained in two chapters of a substantial Epilogue to his biography (the text of which is unaltered). He also reviews the changes in scholarship about Augustine since the 1960s. A personal as well as a scholarly fascination infuse the book-length epilogue and notes that Brown has added to his acclaimed portrait of the bishop of Hippo.

The standard secondary source on Augustine
By Jacob
A very difficult read, but easily the standard secondary source on Augustine. The broad contours of Augustine's life are well-known, but Brown places them within a theological framework. He takes intellectual themes from controversies in Augustine's life (thus the Latin-ish chapter titles) and retells the story around these themes. It makes for somewhat difficult reading at times, but it is very illuminating.

I cannot imagine a better work that more neatly captures Augustine's *sitz im leben* than this work. He demonstrates Augustine's philosophical commitment to neo-Platonism by noting how many in Augustine's time, including the man himself, were embarrassed (initially; evidence suggests Augustine later worked himself out of this embarrassment) by the "earthiness" of the Old Testament. Of course, that is just one example.

More recent editions of this book (current printing previous printings) take into account not only recent scholarship on Augustine, but recent archeological finds of some of Augustine's letters and sermons. Peter Brown is the undisputed master of classical antiquity and this book clearly shows it.

Also that Augustine was not always a nice person. Brown also clearly explains the doctrinal controversies ...
By William L. Scurrah
I prefer this biography of Augustine to the more recent one. Brown is clearly a scholar of immense erudition. He does an eloquent job of showing us Augustine as a human being, not merely a saint. Also that Augustine was not always a nice person. Brown also clearly explains the doctrinal controversies of the time and the factors that resulted in Catholicism being the "orthodox" version of Christianity in the western empire. Another point that comes out relevant to later history (especially the justifications for the Crusades): that the Middle East and North Africa were Christian territories long before the rise and conquests of Islam. And that the eastern churches were more theologically sophisticated than the western at the time of Augustine.

A biography for spiritual exercises.with Augustine.
By Andrés G. Niño, PhD.
Peter Brown's biography of St Augustine has enlightened half a century of scholarship, guided countless projects of serious students and served as a point of departure towards a spiritual pilgrimage for a general readership. For several years we had a group at St Mary's/Cambridge of advanced students and people in search of spiritual guidance and I always recommend them this biography that presents such a living portrait of Augustine. Particularly, chapter 16 on the Confessions serves the group as an introduction to the 'reading and experience' of the classic masterpiece. From there the road is open to explore various aspects of Augustine's life and work. As the group does taking up the Spiritual Exercises in the Confessions. .

Revolutionary Beauty: The Radical Photomontages of John Heartfield, by Sabine T. Kriebel

Revolutionary Beauty offers the first sustained study of the German artist John Heartfield's groundbreaking political photomontages, published in the left-wing weekly Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung (AIZ) during the 1930s. Sabine T. Kriebel foregrounds the critical artistic practices with which Heartfield directly confronted the turbulent, ideologically charged currents of interwar Europe, exposing the cultural politics of the crucial historical moment that witnessed the consolidation of National Socialism. In this period of radicalization and mass mobilization, the medium of photomontage—the cut-and-paste assemblage of photograph and text—offered a way to deconstruct the visual world and galvanize beholders on a mass scale.

Kriebel transforms our understandings of montage as a quintessentially modern practice. Central to that reconceptualization is suture, a concept integral to film theory but recruited in this book to explore the psychic operations of Heartfield’s seamlessly welded AIZ photomontages. Revolutionary Beauty proposes that the language of sutured illusionism constitutes one of the most important and overlooked critiques of modern media, wherein a radical reassessment resides in suture. Scholars of photography, modern and contemporary art history, media studies, and European history will doubtlessly embrace this book.

Review
"John Heartfield (1891 1968) was one of the most significant visual artists of the twentieth century. Sabine T. Kriebel s sophisticated study contributes enormously to our understanding of how and why."--Peter Chametzky"American Historical Review" (04/01/2015)"

Kriebel is intently concerned with the poetics of the photographic image, but this should not imply that her focus is only on the immanent qualities of Heartfield s montages. There is also a rigorous interrogation of the political and material stakes for photography and a keen alertness to the importance of laughter and the comic at the root of these works. The challenges of writing about these alone are considerable and Kriebel s long-awaited book admirably rises to the task. --Debbie Lewer"History of Photography" (11/01/2014)"

From the Inside Flap
"It is difficult to write brilliantly about humor, more difficult to write engagingly about humor and politics, and more difficult still to write with precision about humor, politics, and art. Revolutionary Beauty is indispensable for understanding the singular genius of John Heartfield, the Weimar era avant-garde virtuoso whose photomontages created a new visual language for destabilizing and ridiculing Nazism’s rise and triumph." —Anson Rabinbach, Professor of History at Princeton University and author of The Third Reich Sourcebook

"Historically precise and theoretically astute, this is by far the most wide-ranging study of John Heartfield’s extraordinary project to date. Sabine Kriebel goes beyond a single oeuvre to unearth, patiently but provocatively, the complex visual imaginary of the Left in the darkest moments of its history." —Frederic J. Schwartz, author of Blind Spots: Critical Theory and the History of Art in Twentieth-Century Germany and The Werkbund: Design Theory and Mass Culture Before the First World War

"This book by Sabine Kriebel fills a void in an exemplary mode of critical cultural scholarship, promising to take a major place in the fields of 20th century photography, mass media, European cultural studies and modern art. I laud the unprecedented depth of analysis in her probing of specific images and their particular relation to ever-changing events in this period. Attention to this book will radiate centripetally, engaging the interest of a new generation of avid and often extra-mural dissenters in this age of new crisis, potentially serving as historic handbook for the Occupy generation."—Sally Stein, Emerita Professor, UC Irvine

English Heart, Hindi Heartland: The Political Life of Literature in India (FlashPoints), by Rashmi Sadana

English Heart, Hindi Heartland examines Delhi’s postcolonial literary world—its institutions, prizes, publishers, writers, and translators, and the cultural geographies of key neighborhoods—in light of colonial histories and the globalization of English. Rashmi Sadana places internationally recognized authors such as Salman Rushdie, Anita Desai, Vikram Seth, and Aravind Adiga in the context of debates within India about the politics of language and alongside other writers, including K. Satchidanandan, Shashi Deshpande, and Geetanjali Shree. Sadana undertakes an ethnographic study of literary culture that probes the connections between place, language, and text in order to show what language comes to stand for in people’s lives. In so doing, she unmasks a social discourse rife with questions of authenticity and cultural politics of inclusion and exclusion. English Heart, Hindi Heartland illustrates how the notion of what is considered to be culturally and linguistically authentic not only obscures larger questions relating to caste, religious, and gender identities, but that the authenticity discourse itself is continually in flux. In order to mediate and extract cultural capital from India’s complex linguistic hierarchies, literary practitioners strategically deploy a fluid set of cultural and political distinctions that Sadana calls “literary nationality.” Sadana argues that English, and the way it is positioned among the other Indian languages, does not represent a fixed pole, but rather serves to change political and literary alliances among classes and castes, often in surprising ways.

Review
"Taken overall, this book is an excellent and timely addition to the natural history literature for both professional biologists and other chameleon aficionados."--Robin Andrews"The Quarterly Review of Biology 90, no. 1" (03/15/2015)

From the Inside Flap
"[A] synthetic picture of the evolution and biology of an enigmatic group of lizards, The Biology of Chameleons is timely because there have been substantial recent developments in the systematics and taxonomy of chameleons, and we now have a far greater understanding of selective pressures driving color change and life history." Martin Whiting, Macquarie University, Australia

"The Biology of Chameleons will become a standard reference for all scholars interested in these reptiles . . . yet it will be understandable, in great part, to a more general audience as well." Miguel Vences, University of Braunschweig, Germany

A very comprehensive chameleon text
By Dayna Willems DVM
The Biology of Chameleons should now be considered the authoritative text on our knowledge of chameleons. This is an impressively comprehensive text pulling from hundreds of scientific articles, studies, and field work like no other text has before it. While written in the style of a reference book it is still very readable for the more casual enthusiast as well as serious students and professionals. The anatomy sections are really the first of their kind in this depth and an excellent resource with some good visual aids. The sections on physiology and behavior are thorough without getting drowned in the details. Taxonomy is a daunting topic but here it is represented with current updates in a comprehensive breakdown, including data from the fossil records. A text with such an in-depth investigation of ecology and biology is a wonderful resource for the study and understanding of chameleons and a must have for chameleon resource libraries.

This book does not cover any captive care aspects of keeping chameleons as pets - there are many other books that do so and ChameleonForums.com is a wonderful resource for that.

The World in Depression, 1929-1939, by Charles P. Kindleberger

In this magisterial account of the Great Depression, MIT economist Charles Kindleberger emphasizes three factors that continue to shape global financial markets: panic, the power of contagion, and importance of hegemony. Reissued on its fortieth anniversary with a new foreword by Barry J. Eichengreen and J. Bradford DeLong, this masterpiece of economic history shows why U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers, during the darkest hours of the 2008 global financial crisis, turned to Kindleberger and his peers for guidance.

Review
The finest analytical account of the run-up to the Great Depression and the ensuing run-down from it into mild recovery and eventual world war. [This] brilliant book remains a carefully documented admonition to our leading spirits to look to the ends of what they are currently about. -- Times Literary Supplement

From the Inside Flap
“The World in Depression is the best book on the subject, and the subject, in turn, is the economically decisive decade of the century so far.”—John Kenneth Galbraith

"[Kindleberger] has written perhaps the finest analytical account of the run-up to the Great Depression and the ensuing run-down from it into mild recovery and eventual world war. [This] brilliant book remains a carefully documented admonition to our leading spirits to 'look to the ends' of what they are currently about."—Times Literary Supplement

"Charles Kindleberger's The World in Depression opened American eyes to the failures of interdependence behind the First Great Depression. DeLong and Eichengreen render great service by bringing this history to today's readers, with a preface that notes grim parallels and rephrases urgent questions for the Eurozone and for the wider world. You can't go wrong by reading Kindleberger—and better late than never."—James K. Galbraith, author of Inequality and Instability: A Study of the World Economy Just Before the Great Crisis.

Benchmark Study of the Causes of the Great Depression
By A Customer
This economics book is outstanding at describing the economics of the Great Depression. In his time, Kindleberger was regarded by many as the highest authority on the economics of the Great Depression. He also was an economist of the highest order. (Check out his other books.) This book is an outstanding analysis of the Great Depression.

Kindleberger explains that the reason for the Depression was a lack of a stable international economic structure and mistakes preceding the Great Depression. In other words, the financial structure we enjoy today simply did not exist at the time. The flawed international system could only have led to a financial crisis eventually.
There simply was no financial structure in place to exact a powerful enough of a force on the global financial system. Great Britain had abdicated the leadership role and the United States was yet unwilling to assume that role. Nations turned inward (and I would add that countries that devalued from the gold standard quickly faired best).

Macroeconomics had not yet been developed. Keynes General Theory only came out in the mid-1930's, and then it was largely unknown. Friedman would not develop his monetary theory until well after the Great Depression had ended.

The book is not the only explanation of the Great Depression, nor pretends to be, but is a highly valid one and should be considered by anyone seriously interested in the subject. This book is a classic for the subject.

The financial world used a flawed gold standard. Great Britain (and finance minister Winston Churchill specifically) played a leading role in implementing the flawed international system. Then when the depression hit, Great Britain quickly dumped the gold standard and recoverd the soonest. Herbert Hoover rigidly stick to the gold standard. FDR dumped it once becoming president, and GDP grew strongly. But full employment from the great depths of the Great Depression did not occur until the massive spending of World War II.

Very Useful; 4.5 Stars
By R. Albin
Written a generation ago, this concise and well written book is still regarded as the best single monograph on the Great Depression of the 1930s. Kindleberger provides a nice description of the major economic and financial events involved in the Great Depression coupled with a generally convincing analysis of its mechanisms. While Kindleberger uses a fair amount of economics/financial terminology (par, terms of trade, etc.), the analysis is generally easy to follow and a modest amount of background knowledge of economics is all that is needed to follow his discussion.

Kindleberger sets out to answer 2 related questions; what caused the Great Depression and what made it so profound and durable? One criticism of Kindleberger is that the answer to the first question emerges implicitly while the answer to the second question is addressed explicitly. Kindleberger's narrative shows that the Great Depression was to a large extent a delayed sequel to WWI. The war generated a large number of structural and political problems that contributed significantly to the emergence of the Great Depression. These included the erosion of British dominance of the world financial system, the related problem of war debts and reparations, over-production of primary products, the considerable economic problems of Germany, and smaller problems like the deleterious economic consequences of the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Kindleberger shows the Great Depression as a massive deflationary event emerging and sustained by a series of interrelated vicious cycles. Competitive currency depreciation, competitive tariff barriers, and problems of individual national central banks to cooperate. Once the vicious cycles were initiated, they developed momentum of their own, severely affecting the economies of many nations, and leading to an enormous decline in international trade and paralysis of the international financial system.

Kindleberger argues that this downward path could have been arrested only by intelligent leadership of the international financial system. But one of the sequelae of WWI was an absence of such leadership. The British, who had de facto occupied this role for much of the 19th century were no longer able to exert such leadership. The logical successors to the British were the Americans, but American governments were not inclined to undertake such responsibility. Kindleberger points out as well, though, that there were not international financial institutions for certain key roles. For example, with private international lending withering in the Great Depression, there were nothing like the IMF or World Bank to provide capital. Kindleberger, a self-described Keynesian, clearly believes that the Great Depression could only have abrogated by aggressive American use of fiscal and monetary policy, and American led reconstruction of the world financial system.

Written a number of years, some of Kindelberger's detailed discussion is probably incorrect. I believe the consensus is that the 1937 depression was due to the relatively tight fiscal and monetary policies of the Roosevelt administration. Adam Tooze has argued well that the German economy of the late 30s was not a "blitzkrieg" economy but devoted to maximum rearmarment and limited by balance of payments problems and other economic constraints.

Finally, Kindleberger makes a fascinating counterfactual suggestion. Would American leadership and reconstruction of the world financial-economic system occurred without WWII?

Important work on the Great Depression.
By Stergios D. Marangos
The main problem in most analyses of the Great Depression in the United States lays in the fact that most information regarding the global economy as a whole, and the actors there within, is largely omitted along with the political atmosphere and dominant social structures at the time - The effects of devaluations or surplus production on trading partners, for a simple example. Additionally, people tend to forget that this was a world phenomena. So, while economists of different allegiances attempt(ed) to debunk one another and focus on the domestic workings of the Capitalist mode of production confined to certain assumptive modules, Kindleberger takes on this larger problem. To say that this is not important is to say that the world itself is not complex - a folly that I suspect even zealots of the Mises institute would be hesitant to make. The difficulty of this task, and one which I believe Kindleberger tackles with finesse, is this complexity itself.

Ultimately, the main point of this brilliant work is simply that, with the decline of the British Empire, no heir rose to both stabilize and legitimize the international structure. States turned inwards. Indeed, as the no-named reviewer above states, those who devalued the quickest or dumped the gold standard the earliest enjoyed the quickest recoveries. The parallels, which Kindleberger makes in subsequent works (and I believe touches on in this work as well), to political happenings are immense. The withdrawal of the states from the structured world order of the 19th and early 20th century only fostered the miscommunication and mistrust so pervasive in international relations. With the rise of beggar thy neighbor policies, largely a product of the World Depression and the withdrawal from a relatively cooperative, legitimized system, the potential for conflict was definitely magnified.

This is an essential work for anyone interested in the Great Depression.
Kindleberger's approach was perhaps so difficult that it is still unique in itself.
