Jazz/Not Jazz: The Music and Its BoundariesFrom University of California Press

What is jazz? What is gained—and what is lost—when various communities close ranks around a particular definition of this quintessentially American music? Jazz/Not Jazz explores some of the musicians, concepts, places, and practices which, while deeply connected to established jazz institutions and aesthetics, have rarely appeared in traditional histories of the form. David Ake, Charles Hiroshi Garrett, and Daniel Goldmark have assembled a stellar group of writers to look beyond the canon of acknowledged jazz greats and address some of the big questions facing jazz today. More than just a history of jazz and its performers, this collections seeks out those people and pieces missing from the established narratives to explore what they can tell us about the way jazz has been defined and its history has been told.

Cheap on Crime: Recession-Era Politics and the Transformation of American Punishment, by Prof. Hadar Aviram

After forty years of increasing prison construction and incarceration rates, winds of change are blowing through the American correctional system. The 2008 financial crisis demonstrated the unsustainability of the incarceration project, thereby empowering policy makers to reform punishment through fiscal prudence and austerity. In Cheap on Crime, Hadar Aviram draws on years of archival and journalistic research and builds on social history and economics literature to show the powerful impact of recession-era discourse on the death penalty, the war on drugs, incarceration practices, prison health care, and other aspects of the American correctional landscape.

Review
""Cheap on Crime" makes a valuable contribution to the literature on mass incarceration and is a must-read for those seeking explanations for the significant changes that have occurred in American corrections over the last 5 years."--Christine S. Scott-Hayward"Law & Society Review" (11/01/2015)

"Thought-provoking and notable work... "Cheap on Crime" documents how market values have come to dominate the discourse on American corrections since the Great Recession. A welcome edition to the literature at the intersection of economics and criminology."--Larry Karson"Social Science Journal" (08/01/2015)

"A well-researched book with a coherent narrative and a strong, theoretically and empirically grounded argument . . . Essential reading."--Ashley Rubin"Punishment & Society" (08/26/2015)

From the Inside Flap
“After decades of stability, mass incarceration is suddenly shapeshifting with enormous speed. Long-held debates are quickly becoming outdated. Aviram has provided us an incisive analysis of this transformation in progress and a lexicon for the new language of carceral power.” —Jonathan Simon, Adrian A. Kragen Professor of Law, University of California, Berkeley

“Masterfully interrogates the economic logics that underpin our America’s massive penal crisis in the wake of the Great Recession. Aviram offers a wonderfully rich analysis of the emerging ‘cheap on crime’ ethos.” —Mona Lynch, Professor of Criminology, Law, and Society and Law, University of California, Irvine

“A groundbreaking analysis of the new rationality of fiscal austerity that will probably dominate the penal field in the years to come.”—Alessandro De Giorgi, Associate Professor of Justice Studies, San Jose State University, and author of Re-thinking the Political Economy of Punishment: Perspectives on Post-Fordism and Penal Politics

“The 2007 financial crisis imposed new realities on American crime policy—widespread realization that we cannot buy our way to safety though ever-tougher sentences. Aviram coins the term humonetarianism to capture the twin impulses that animate this development: humanitarian concerns with justice, coupled with hard-nosed neo-liberal concerns with money. This odd couple of concerns has made substantial inroads. Cost-based opposition to the death penalty is at an all-time high, and in some states the most draconian sentencing laws have been softened. This is a hard-headed analysis that explores these new trends and their consequences. It is must reading for anyone interested in the criminal law and crime policy—that is, all informed citizens.”—Malcolm Feeley, Claire Sanders Clements Dean’s Professor of Law, University of California, Berkeley

About the Author
Hadar Aviram is Professor of Law at University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where she codirects the Hastings Institute for Criminal Justice and publishes the California Correctional Crisis blog. She lives in San Francisco.

By K. Reiter
This is a highly read-able, wonderfully comprehensive, refreshingly new take on mass incarceration in the United States. Aviram focuses in on public dialogues about the economic costs of incarceration -- revealing how these dialogues shape (in both good and bad ways) the forms punishment takes in modern America. I'd recommend this book for teachers wanting to work with students to make them think more critically about the language of punishment, and for citizens who care about how their tax dollars are being spent. A must read!

Prof. Aviram has an amazing ability to explain complex public policy concepts, choices and consequences in real-world terms. If you want to understand how the financial crisis and its aftermath has changed the way we punish those convicted of crimes, read this book.

Cheap on Crime: Masterful analysis of crime, punishment, and economics
By edi
"Cheap on Crime" is an insightful and well-researched tour de force examining the economic logics and discourses animating contemporary criminal justice reforms. Professor Aviram does a masterful job marshaling extensive data and economic analysis to illuminate the shifting logics of crime and punishment in an era of austerity. My undergraduate students learned a great deal from Aviram's clear and concise analysis of diverse areas of law, including reforms to prisons, capital punishment, and marijuana policy. "Cheap on Crime" is a ground-breaking book, and is accessible to both scholarly and lay audiences. Highly recommended!

Riesling Rediscovered: Bold, Bright, and Dry, by John Winthrop Hæger

Riesling is the world’s seventh most-planted white wine grape variety and among the fastest growing over the past twenty years. It is a personal favorite of many sommeliers, chefs, and other food and wine professionals for its appealing aromatics, finesse, and minerality; for its uncanny ability to reflect terroir; and for its impressive versatility with cuisines of all types. It is stylistically paradoxical, however. Now usually made dry in most of Europe and Australia, and assumed dry by most German consumers, Riesling is made mostly sweet or lightly sweet in North America and is believed sweet in the American marketplace irrespective of origin. Riesling is thus consequently—but mistakenly—shunned by the mainstream of American wine drinkers, whose tastes and habits have been overwhelmingly dry for two generations.

Riesling Rediscovered looks at the present state of dry Riesling across the Northern Hemisphere: where it is grown and made, what models and objectives vintners have in mind, and what parameters of grape growing and winemaking are essential when the goal is a delicious dry wine. John Winthrop Haeger explores the history of Riesling to illuminate how this variety emerged from a crowded field of grape varieties grown widely across northern Europe. Riesling Rediscovered is a comprehensive, current, and accessible overview of what many consider to be the world’s finest and most versatile white wine.

Review
"What makes the book so encompassing, informative, and relevant is that Haeger has avoided focusing on viticulture or enology or economy in isolation, and has instead looked at all of them in their historic and contemporary scientific and socio-cultural context. . . . Not everyone loves Riesling, but those of us who do will find our passion articulately explained and expressed in Haeger s book."--Anne Krebiehl, MW"The World of Fine Wine" (04/01/2016)"

"With a historian s clear eye for illuminating detail, Haeger describes how riesling is made. . . . As a go-to book for understanding and selling riesling to others Haeger s language and thorough research skills can t be beat."--Deborah Grossman"Sante Online" (04/09/2016)"

"A study that will become a standard work on Riesling. . . . Haegar is a China scholar, and his book on Rielsing combines a scholarly rigor with an evident passion for his subject."--David Marcus"The Street" (05/28/2016)

"You stand to learn a great deal."--Joe Roberts"1 Wine Dude" (06/06/2016)

"The definitive book on the varietal currently in print in the English language. . . . Fans of both reading and wine will enjoy Haeger's precise and fluid prose."--James Knight"Bohemian" (08/03/2016)

From the Inside Flap
"The development of dry Riesling was perhaps never presented in such detail and with such a new historic perspective as it is in Haeger’s book." —Stephan Reinhardt, author of The Finest Wines of Germany

"John Winthrop Haeger has captured the essence of Riesling. The author goes against the modern trend that favors sweeter and softer styles, demonstrating that Riesling can be at its best as a dry wine. Riesling wine producers from around the world will applaud this research.”—Olivier Humbrecht MW, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Mediterraneans: North Africa and Europe in an Age of Migration, c. 1800-1900, by Julia A. Clancy-Smith

Today labor migrants mostly move south to north across the Mediterranean. Yet in the nineteenth century thousands of Europeans and others moved south to North Africa, Egypt, and the Levant. This study of a dynamic borderland, the Tunis region, offers the fullest picture to date of the Mediterranean before, and during, French colonialism. In a vibrant examination of people in motion, Julia A. Clancy-Smith tells the story of countless migrants, travelers, and adventurers who traversed the Mediterranean, changing it forever. Who were they? Why did they leave home? What awaited them in North Africa? And most importantly, how did an Arab-Muslim state and society make room for the newcomers? Combining fleeting facts, tales of success and failure, and vivid cameos, the book gives a groundbreaking view of one of the principal ways that the Mediterranean became modern.

From the Inside Flap
"From the anonymous Sicilian fishermen to Maltese coachmen, smugglers and burglars, from Sardinian female servants to French women missionaries and Ottoman future statesmen, Julia Clancy-Smith draws a lively, poetic, portrait of the thousands of migrants who came to Tunisia in the 19th century, changing its space, rhythms and sounds long before the advent of French colonial rule: An ethnographic journey through 19th-century Tunisia that beautifully captures the spirit of the place."—Lucette Valensi, author of The Birth of the Despot: Venice and the Sublime Porte

"In this meticulously researched, beautifully written work, Clancy-Smith has used an extraordinary array of sources from administrative and legal documents to personal letters and testimonies to bring the nineteenth-century Mediterranean world alive. Covering a wide range of situations from domestic service to contraband and exploring both the personal, legal, and administrative dimensions of each, she demonstrates the different ways in which private and public spheres intersected. The book is essential reading not only for scholars and students but also for anyone interested in gender, migration and the societies of the Mediterranean."—Patricia Lorcin, author of Imperial Identities

"In her groundbreaking study of population movements, Clancy-Smith reconceptualizes the nineteenth-century history of North Africa by inserting the 'missing' people into the social fabric. She shows the roles these Southern Europeans of modest means played in creating a borderland society whose impact continued during the colonial period. Mediterraneans opens new windows into power structures, labor history, issues of gender, and social and cultural negotiations, along the way replacing binary constructions with a much more complicated world."—Zeynep Çelik, author of Empire, Architecture, and the City: French-Ottoman Encounters, 1830-1914.

This is one of the best books I have read!
By History Grad Student
Mediterraneans is an excellent, and incredibly well researched work. The book paints an amazingly detailed and complex portrait of everyday life in the city La Goulette, in particular, and the Mediterranean world in general. It is an academic history book, which would be completely appropriate for any exploraton of the history Europe, North Africa, the "Middle East", immigration, and myriad other fields. Seemingly influcenced by the Annales School notion of the Longue Duree, Clancy-Smith's book analyzes the far flung influences and patterns from around the globe in their impact on Nineteenth-Century Tunisia. Overall, reading Mediterraneans is like taking a leisurely stroll through the past, and simultaneously shows the reader a bird's eye view of far reaching historical trends and the on the ground view of those people whose experiences She analyzes. This book will not disappoint!

Luigi Russolo, Futurist: Noise, Visual Arts, and the Occult, by Luciano Chessa

Luigi Russolo (1885–1947)—painter, composer, builder of musical instruments, and first-hour member of the Italian Futurist movement—was a crucial figure in the evolution of twentieth-century aesthetics. As creator of the first systematic poetics of noise and inventor of what has been considered the first mechanical sound synthesizer, Russolo looms large in the development of twentieth-century music. In the first English language study of Russolo, Luciano Chessa emphasizes the futurist’s interest in the occult, showing it to be a leitmotif for his life and a foundation for his art of noises. Chessa shows that Russolo’s aesthetics of noise, and the machines he called the intonarumori, were intended to boost practitioners into higher states of spiritual consciousness. His analysis reveals a multifaceted man in whom the drive to keep up with the latest scientific trends coexisted with an embrace of the irrational, and a critique of materialism and positivism.

From the Inside Flap
“Luigi Russolo is increasingly being recognized as an important figure in 20th century art and music, and his work deserves to be better understood. Chessa’s archival research and readings of esoteric or otherwise little-known texts are impressive, and he offers a convincing account of the influence of the occult on Russolo and the Futurists in general. This book alters our conception of Russolo, Futurism, and the early artistic avant-garde.”—Christoph Cox, Hampshire College

“This book is timely, and merits the attention of a wider audience. Luigi Russolo, futurista makes a compelling argument that radically revises our views on a major creative figure of the twentieth century. Luciano Chessa provides vast amounts of information on the ideas and trends that influenced the Futurists, and offers a wealth of insight and observations that point the way for further research on avant-garde music and art in the twentieth century.”—Paul DeMarinis, Department of Art and Art History, Stanford University

Long Neglected Era in Art and Music Brought to Light
By Canticle
Luciano Chessa's book, 'Luigi Russolo, Futurist: Noise, Visual Arts and the Occult is as of this writing the only book available about the Italian futurist composer other than the composer's writings themselves. I purchased this book with a sense of excitement having read about Russolo (1885-1947) in various references in books on 20th century music and being puzzled as to why this subject had not been dealt with in any real detail.

Well that is now no longer the case. Chessa's book, published in March of this year fills this scholarly musicological gap quite well. The book provides a comprehensive picture of the cultural milieu of the Italian Futurist movement embracing visual as well as musical arts as it developed in the early twentieth century prior to, during and after the first world war and into the second.

The cultural milieu was heavily steeped in the Theosophy movement, an exploration of various ecstatic and esoteric spiritual practices which flourished as the practice of Spiritualism was waning in popularity. Both practices shared an interest in the after life but Theosophy was perhaps more comprehensive as adherents explored various eastern religions and practices in search of answers about consciousness before, during and after life itself as well as the interactions between the material and the spiritual. Both Spiritualism and Theosophy along with the immediate thought content philosophical theories of Henri Bergson (1859-1941) informed the futurists as they, along with the rest of society began to explore the impact and implications of the industrial revolution and discoveries like electric light, recording machines, x-rays and radio.

Having only a slight acquaintance with Theosophy and practically no acquaintance with Italian visual arts in the early twentieth century required a bit of time for me to absorb. But there is no question that these are essential to understanding the genesis and practice of the 'art of noises' as Russolo named it in his 1913 manifesto.

Chessa recounts an era in which this philosophy along with fascism were the formative underpinnings of the futurist movement at the dawn of the twentieth century. In only 230 pages of text (and 64 pages of notes and references) he provides a wealth of information most of which was new to this writer and will likely be unfamiliar to the average reader as well. This book opens virtually a whole new world begging to be researched and understood both for the arts the produced in that era as well as its influence on later developments in both art and music.

The futurists attempted to create new art forms that would more directly express or represent 'thought forms' as described by the theosophists and the world of the spirits. The industrial age, mechanization, new media like recordings and radio transmission, x-rays all held a mystique which resulted in the questioning of philosophy and religion as well as politics much as the atomic bomb and, later, computers would shake beliefs and ideas in the latter half of the twentieth century.

Prior to the publication of this book Chessa had recreated the lost 'Intonarumori' which were destroyed and/or lost during the second world war. Only one sound recording exists of this music and even the scores have been lost but Chessa has essentially resurrected the noise machines, performed with them and has had music written for them as well. This is music which in 1914 and 1921 that provoked riots comparable to the 1913 performance of Stravinsky's 'Rite of Spring' and presaged the work with noise by the likes of George Antheil and later John Cage.

There is no explaining the neglect of this area of art and music history but there is joy in this wonderful book which is both an intriguing tale and a fine reference work for further research. One wonders if Chessa might now embark on further explorations of this era and perhaps even a biography of Russolo but the essential ground work has been laid here for many researches to come on this fascinating era.

The book is available in hard cover, paperback and kindle editions. This reviewer downloaded the kindle edition which has been produced with the same care as the print editions.

From the Inside Flap
"Smelser is an outstanding sociologist, who has devoted a lot of attention to the status of his own discipline. His understanding of the content, methods, and uses of sociology is of the sort that can be reached only by the active researcher and theorist whose substantive contribution are highly significant. This collection of formerly published articles is not random but unified by a single theme: the evolving views of the author on the discipline of sociology which have not lost any of their relevance."—Piotr Sztompka, professor of theoretical sociology at the Jagiellonian University at Krakow, Poland

"Smelser's reflections are important for the balanced assessment they offer of the scope and inherent tensions of the discipline, and the forces which shape it. The sociology of the twenty-first century will be better for the rescue of this wisdom."—Lyn Spillman, University of Notre Dame.

"A master of more disciplines than any living sociologist, Smelser's pellucid work spans from the mid-20th century until today. Getting Sociology Right provides participant observation about the extraordinary disciplinary shifts that have marked the last seven decades. These essays tell us where American sociology has been, and a lot about where it may be going, too."—Jeffrey Alexander, Lillian Chavenson Saden Professor of Sociology, Yale University

"In this lucid and captivating book, Neil Smelser combines his deep experience and knowledge of the discipline of sociology together with his wide ranging vision across all of the social sciences.  This collection of essays, produced over a 50 year period, is a window into the evolution of the social sciences and the unique challenges and triumphs of the sociological perspective.  It is also a fascinating look at a long and successful individual career. Getting Sociology Right  is a stimulating, provocative, wise, and surprisingly fresh book that I hope every young sociologist will learn from."—Mary C. Waters, M.E. Zukerman Professor of Sociology, Harvard University

Los Angeles in the 1930s returns to print an invaluable document of Depression-era Los Angeles, illuminating a pivotal moment in L.A.’s history, when writers like Raymond Chandler, Nathanael West, and F. Scott Fitzgerald were creating the images and associations—and the mystique—for which the City of Angels is still known. Many books in one, Los Angeles in the 1930s is both a genial guide and an addictively readable history, revisiting the Spanish colonial period, the Mexican period, the brief California Republic, and finally American sovereignty. It is also a compact coffee table book of dazzling monochrome photography. These whose haunting visions suggest the city we know today and illuminate the booms and busts that marked L.A.’s past and continue to shape its future.

Review
"My favorite new Los Angeles book "--"La Observed"

"Reading both is like finding hidden treasures. . . . The San Francisco and Los Angeles guidebooks offer both traditional tours of the city as well as historical writing more closely akin to poetry. These are books that people can read aloud to one another."--"Beyondchron"

"With a nimble and witty introduction by David Kipen. . . . The guide remains addictively readable."--"Los Angeles Times"

"More than just a tool to help you find the nearest Presbyterian church or a convenient tennis court, the guides, part of the Depression-era Federal Writers Project, included thoughtful essays on history, life and culture in each destination, as well as blow-by-blow tours through city neighborhoods and other information that in many cases remains at least partially relevant (or interesting) today."--"New York Post"

"A time capsule of old L.A. . . . The book is a faded blueprint to local history, a sample of how the city looked and felt."--"Los Angeles Downtown News"

About the Author
The Federal Writers Project (FWP) of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) not only provided jobs and income to writers during the Depression, it created for America an astounding series of detailed and richly evocative guides, recounting the stories and histories of the 48 states (plus Alaska Territory and Puerto Rico) and many of the country’s major cities. David Kipen served for five years as Director of Literature at the National Endowment for the Arts, where he led the Big Read initiative, and for seven years as book editor and book critic of the San Francisco Chronicle. He operates a lending library/used book store in Los Angeles called Libros Schmibros, and he is also the author of The Schreiber Theory: A Radical Rewrite of American Film History and translator of Cervantes’ The Dialogue of the Dogs.

WPA Guide to depression era Los Angeles
By Alan Gregg
Typical of the WPA guides that were written in the 1930's and funded by the FDR administration - although it follows a standard format - this guide in particular is a very interesting look at a Los Angeles few would recognize today. Besides being the motion picture capital of the world, and having an active oil industry, I'm sure many would be surprised at the ruralness of the region surrounding Los Angeles that was awash in citrus and fruit groves and a large diary farming region. This is also pre-freeway Los Angeles, where many small towns existed even within the city limits along with the extensive farms and ranches of the San Fernando Valley which were also within Los Angeles' vast corporate limits. This guide gives true insight how Los Angeles became the model for the decentralized sprawling metropolis it is today, and that other sunbelt cities have followed in it's path.

Reimagining Greek Tragedy on the American Stage, by Helene P. Foley

This book explores the emergence of Greek tragedy on the American stage from the nineteenth century to the present. Despite the gap separating the world of classical Greece from our own, Greek tragedy has provided a fertile source for some of the most innovative American theater. Helene P. Foley shows how plays like Oedipus Rex and Medea have resonated deeply with contemporary concerns and controversies—over war, slavery, race, the status of women, religion, identity, and immigration. Although Greek tragedy was often initially embraced for its melodramatic possibilities, by the twentieth century it became a vehicle not only for major developments in the history of American theater and dance, but also for exploring critical tensions in American cultural and political life. Drawing on a wide range of sources—archival, video, interviews, and reviews—Reimagining Greek Tragedy on the American Stage provides the most comprehensive treatment of the subject available.

Meta-Religion: Religion and Power in World History, by James W. Laine

Whereas many textbooks treat the subject of world religions in an apolitical way, as if each religion were a path for individuals seeking wisdom and not a discourse intimately connected with the exercise of power, James W. Laine treats religion and politics as halves of the same whole, tracing their relationship from the policies of Alexander the Great to the ideologies of modern Europe secularists, with stops in classical India, China, and the Islamic world. Meta-Religion is a groundbreaking text that brings power and politics to the fore of our understanding of world religions, placing religion at the center of world history. This synthetic approach is both transformative and enlightening as it presents a powerful model for thinking differently about what religion is and how it functions in the world. With images and maps to bring the narrative to life, Meta-Religion combines sophisticated scholarly critique with accessibility that students and scholar alike will appreciate.

From the Inside Flap

“Meta-Religion is a tour de force. This bracing account of the intertwining of religion and empire across world history is not only a useful tool for classroom use; it is also, in itself, a significant scholarly contribution. In compelling, accessible prose, the author traces the history of imperial religion and the political uses of religion—from the Greeks to the post-9/11 world—while also examining post-Enlightenment pieties about our own purportedly secular era. The comparative and global scope make this an ideal textbook for courses in world history or global religions, of course, but also for classes in European and U.S. history and politics, where a broader perspective is often sorely needed. Laine’s startling conclusion, that the ways in which modern multicultural societies contend with pluralism are not so new or politically innocent as we might believe, will stimulate readers to reconsider their own pious certainties and the nature of belief itself.” —Katrina Olds, Professor of History at the University of San Francisco and author of Forging the Past: Invented Histories in Counter-Reformation Spain

“This is a challenging and sophisticated revisioning of the standard ‘introduction to world religions’ textbook. Covering a broad sweep of time and place, the book takes seriously a society’s actual ‘world building,’ of which religions are a central part, and describes well how they are managed by the state.”—Andrew O. Fort, Professor of Religion at Texas Christian University

“In Meta-Religion, James Laine offers an original and provocative exploration of religion and power, and he brings to light the unspoken assumptions behind the modern concept of religion. With its global scope and fascinating examples, this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to know what religion is really about.”—Carl W. Ernst, Kenan Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

About the Author
James W. Laine is Arnold H. Lowe Professor of Religious Studies at Macalester College.

By John K.
I am a middle school social studies teacher. The author, James Laine, does an amazing job of showing how religion plays/played in politics and government from the days of Alexander the Great and Ashoka to modern day (Obama) - even when religion isn't evoked. I have been looking for something like this for a long time. However, I don't think it is for "beginners." Having at least a basic knowledge of world religions and some historical figures (kings, emperors, etc) would help with the understanding and comprehension of the topics the author discussed. I have loved reading this book and hope more people can find it as useful as I have.
