The Nicest Kids in Town: American Bandstand, Rock 'n' Roll, and the Struggle for Civil Rights in 1950s Philadelphia, by Matthew F. Delmont

American Bandstand, one of the most popular television shows ever, broadcast from Philadelphia in the late fifties, a time when that city had become a battleground for civil rights. Counter to host Dick Clark’s claims that he integrated American Bandstand, this book reveals how the first national television program directed at teens discriminated against black youth during its early years and how black teens and civil rights advocates protested this discrimination. Matthew F. Delmont brings together major themes in American history—civil rights, rock and roll, television, and the emergence of a youth culture—as he tells how white families around American Bandstand’s studio mobilized to maintain all-white neighborhoods and how local school officials reinforced segregation long after Brown vs. Board of Education. The Nicest Kids in Town powerfully illustrates how national issues and history have their roots in local situations, and how nostalgic representations of the past, like the musical film Hairspray, based on the American Bandstand era, can work as impediments to progress in the present.

From the Inside Flap
“By challenging Dick Clark’s claim that he helped integrate American popular music and culture, Matthew Delmont puts the lie to Clark’s air-brushed history of American Bandstand’s role in racial desegregation. The Nicest Kids in Town shows how the nexus of sound, place, race, and space operated together to create and reinforce a myth of national memory and belonging. Just as importantly, this compelling cultural history demonstrates the importance of the youth market as a theater of struggle where brave young men and women—outraged by the discrimination and racism they faced for the simple act of enjoying music—refused to have their bodies, tastes, or desires policed. Delmont shows how the music moved them, and how in turn they moved the music onto television screens across America.”—Herman Gray, author of Cultural Moves.

“The Nicest Kids in Town speaks simultaneously to several significant current lines of inquiry among historians of the United States after World War II. Delmont takes on issues that we thought we already knew completely—the social and cultural history of the 1950s and ‘60s, the Civil Rights movement, the birth of television—but he brings original material to his story and connects these issues in new ways. Delmont’s work proves him to be a talented, careful, and thorough scholar, and in a large body of work on these topics, his book stands alone.”—Jay Mechling, author of On My Honor: Boy Scouts and the Making of American Youth.

Nicest Kids in Town
By atibamanii
I absolutely recommend this book to all Americans! Especially since the recent passing of Dick Clark.

Mr. Delmont reminds us of two important things about the U.S. in the 1950s & 1960s that still resonate in 2012. 1) American Bandstand was an American commercial enterprise that was not in the forefront of segregation, and 2) American Bandstand's mission was to reach a new growing teenaged consumer population. The show was designed for that from the beginning, meaning that its purpose was not only to reach as many teens as it could, and therefore sell as much product as possible, but also to keep from offending as many of those teens, and their parents, as possible.

You cannot have it both ways. You cannot increase your ratings on commercial television by taking a stand on a very controversial subject, such as race relations and integration were in the 1950s & 1960s. It couldn't be done then, and it can't be done now!

This is also an excellent history of segregation in housing, education, employment, and overall opportunity in Philadelphia that represents a microcosm of the United States.

This is a great book. It belongs with Race Beat and Warmth of Other Suns in telling the story of integration and racism in the U. S. This book talks about racism in Philadelphia- de facto segregation viewed as "different" from de jure segregation of the South. The story is woven around teens, the music industry, American Band Stand, civil rights activists, schools, a story more often told about the South than the third largest city at the time in America.

Lead Wars: The Politics of Science and the Fate of America's Children (California/Milbank Books on Health and the Public), by Gerald Marko

In this incisive examination of lead poisoning during the past half century, Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner focus on one of the most contentious and bitter battles in the history of public health. Lead Wars details how the nature of the epidemic has changed and highlights the dilemmas public health agencies face today in terms of prevention strategies and chronic illness linked to low levels of toxic exposure. The authors use the opinion by Maryland’s Court of Appeals—which considered whether researchers at Johns Hopkins University’s prestigious Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI) engaged in unethical research on 108 African-American children—as a springboard to ask fundamental questions about the practice and future of public health. Lead Wars chronicles the obstacles faced by public health workers in the conservative, pro-business, anti-regulatory climate that took off in the Reagan years and that stymied efforts to eliminate lead from the environments and the bodies of American children.

Review
“In Lead Wars, CUNY’s Gerald Markowitz and Columbia University’s David Rosner convincingly show that the Baltimore toddler study emerged from a century of policymaking in which the US government, faced at times with a choice between protecting children from lead poisoning and protecting the businesses that produced and marketed lead paint, almost invariably chose the latter.” (New York Review Of Books 2013-03-21)

“Lead Wars clearly shows that the scandalous and tragic history of lead is one that our society is doomed to repeat over and over again unless we develop and fight for better safeguards against chemicals and new technology.” (Helen Jupiter Mother Nature Network 2013-03-26)

“A fascinating new book.” (Howard Markel PBS Newshour The Rundown Blog 2013-03-29)

"Thoroughly researched and clearly written, this book does an excellent job of illustrating the problem society encounters when science and industry face off over likely harm versus economic benefit." (Richard Maxwell Library Journal 2013-05-01)

"A deeply conceived and well-written book by two of America's best public health historians. It's also an important background briefing on the politics and ethics of scientific research for journalists who will be covering environmental health issues like these." (Bill Kovarik SE Journal 2013-07-01)

"Chronicles the monstrous irresponsibility of companies in the lead industry over the course of the 20th century." (Nicholas D. Kristof New York Times 2013-10-16)

"I want to thank David Rosner and Gerald Markowitz for what that they've done to bring the story of the lead paint wars to the public." (Senator Sheldon Whitehouse 2013-10-17)

"The prolific team of Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner has done it again. Lead Wars: The Politics of Science and the Fate of America’s Children is a thoroughly researched, passionate, and gripping history of a major public health problem. . . . Lead Wars challenges us to take better care of our children by fighting those industries that appear to regard them—especially poor black and Latino children—as disposable." (Elizabeth Fee Health Affairs 2013-10-01)

From the Inside Flap
“The story Rosner and Markowitz tell of generations of children gravely damaged by promiscuous dispersal of lead, and the persistent attempts made to evade responsibility for the harms caused, is both true and shocking. This book will not just educate future environmental and health leaders, it should outrage them.”—Richard J. Jackson MD, MPH, Professor and Chair, Environmental Health Sciences, UCLA Fielding School of Public Health

"Lead Wars argues that the tragedy of lead is one that our society is doomed to repeat again and again unless we develop better safeguards to protect us against chemicals and new technology. This book is a "must read" for public health professionals as well as for political scientists, social historians and for all who care about the future of America's children."—Philip J. Landrigan MD, Ethel H. Wise Professor of Community Medicine and Chairman in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine

"Can being poor justify differing standards for research or a focus merely on harm reduction and the politically feasible? Markowitz and Rosner make the compelling case that in public health the practical and possible may in the end be immoral and dangerous, and a consequence of the war on science. A necessary read for anyone who cares about public health, the role of government, children, medical experimentation and environmental justice."—Susan M. Reverby, McLean Professor in the History of Ideas and Professor of Women's and Gender Studies, Wellesley College

“Lead poisoning remains a tragedy (and scandal) of immense proportions, and the authors utilize new sources—including previously unexamined court records—to tell a story that is as gripping as it is important.”—Robert N. Proctor, Professor of the History of Science at Stanford University and author of Cancer Wars

"This book tells the story of a public health tragedy affecting millions of children, the determined doctors who tried to help, and an industry propaganda campaign which prolonged and worsened the tragedy. For as long as powerful corporations manipulate politicians and public opinion to profit from dangerous products, this will remain an important story for our country."—Sheldon Whitehouse, United States Senator

"Lead Wars makes clear the public health dangers we face if we continue to ignore this corporate strategy that defines “acceptable” levels of risk for the thousands of chemicals in use. It brings home the importance now more than ever of taking a precautionary approach to managing toxic chemicals. This book is a must for any activist who wants to understand the strategies polluters use to continue business as usual."—Lois Marie Gibbs, Executive Director, Center for Health, Environment & Justice

"In this outstanding book, Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner utilize historical scholarship to expose a major tragedy in recent public health: the failure to protect children from the harms of lead in our environment. Despite the fact that the toxic effects of lead have been known for centuries, they show—using previously unavailable documents—how the lead industry has protected their profits at public expense, despite their explicit knowledge of its many dangers. Lead Wars brings this tragic history to light in a narrative that integrates deep investigation and analysis with compelling advocacy and compassion for children who continue to be at risk from one of the world’s best-known toxins."—Allan M. Brandt, Professor of the History of Medicine at Harvard University, and author of The Cigarette Century: The Rise, Fall, and Deadly Persistence of the Product That Defined America

"Markowitz and Rosner have majestically woven the key characters and elements of the history of lead poisoning into a captivating narrative that exposes a tremendous and terrifying truth; unless it serves the needs of private enterprise, public health is incapable of controlling the causes of chronic disease and disability. In place of prevention, we have settled for partial solutions. Everyone who has an interest in public health, health policy or history should read this book."—Bruce Lanphear, MD, MPH, Clinician Scientist, Child & Family Research Institute BC Children’s Hospital and Professor of Health Sciences, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC

"Lead Wars" should be required reading in all medical schools
By K. DAVEY
Lead paint and "tetraethyl lead" poisoning of children resulting in brain damage and death represents one of the most hideous public health disasters in America.

The Ethyl Gasoline Corporation manufactured "tetraethyl lead" because when mixed with gas, it improved vehicle performance and fuel economy. Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner wrote that "lead became part of the air Americans breathed when, in 1923, lead was introduced into gasoline to give cars more power. With the dramatic growth of this vast industry, every American child, parent, and neighbor began to systematically incorporate into their bodies a toxic heavy metal that was already known to be poisoning workers in the United States and elsewhere."

For decades, Medical Director of the Ethyl Corp., Robert A. Kehoe, M.D., gave "scientific cover" for Ethyl, and became the principal defender of keeping "highly profitable" lead in gasoline, which contributed to the poisoning of millions of American children from 1928 until TEL or tetraethyl lead was outlawed in 1986. Industry-owned research facilities conducted lead studies, usually with pro-lead results; research was carefully crafted to benefit industrial sponsors, not the health of U.S. citizens. Incredibly, under oath in 1966, Dr. Kehoe told Congress that he and his colleagues at the Kettering Laboratory in Cincinnati, Ohio "had been looking for 30 years for evidence of bad effects from leaded gasoline in the general population and had found none." Kehoe argued that lead is "normal" in the human body and even recommended, for the sake of progress, elevating the lead level in gasoline. There was, he said, "not the slightest evidence" of harm from airborne lead, and claimed that leaded gasoline posed no risk at all to public health.

Needless to say, Kehoe was tragically wrong. Herbert Needleman, M.D., a courageous pediatrician at Temple University discovered a direct correlation between lowered IQ and increased lead content of baby teeth collected from children in North Philadelphia. He got the idea from the 1950s, when strontium 90, a by-product of atomic testing in Utah, became a component in the teeth and skeletons of babyboomers across the USA. Needleman's research in the 1960s indicated that "leaded" gas exhaust poisoned babies both inside and outside the womb. A recent study found that children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder have elevated average blood-lead levels 20-30% higher than children without ADHD. The central nervous system of a fetus or young child, undergoing rapid changes, is particularly vulnerable to lead exposure. For his pioneering research, Dr. Needleman, now in his late 80s, should have received the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Many European countries banned the use of lead-based paint as early as 1909. The U.S. lead industry "chose to run massive marketing and promotion campaigns all through the first half of the twentieth century despite their knowledge that lead paint was causing children to go into comas, suffer convulsions, and die." The USA allowed the continued use of lead in paint until 1978, but lead does not biodegrade. Today, 2% of American children are diagnosed with lead poisoning.

The demise of Kehoe's leaded gas was accelerated when Clair Patterson, a geochemist at Caltech analyzed core drillings of ice in Antarctica indicating that concentrations of lead in the environment had increased an alarming 350 percent between 1930 and 1965. When leaded gasoline was marketed nationwide in the late 1920s and in the 1930s, the frequency of childhood lead poisoning reported in medical journals increased dramatically. Unfortunately, scientists in the United States have lost funding and have been exposed to lawsuits (or much worse) after their evidence-based research produced results that threatened powerful economic interests. When Drs. Alice Hamilton, Harriet Hardy, Randolph Byers, Clair Patterson, and Herbert Needleman presented unwelcome lead data, petrochemical interests devoted considerable resources attacking them personally. Suppression of unwelcome lead research and fiendish harassment of independent scientists was not uncommon, particularly during the pre-EPA era.

While children continue to be exposed to lead, those born in the 1990s have higher IQs than those born 20 years earlier, when lead was lavishly dumped along U.S. roads and highways. Based on the government's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, about 68 million American children experienced toxic exposure from leaded gasoline during the Ethyl era. Between 1976 and 1996, removal of lead from gasoline precipitated nearly a 90% drop in children's blood-lead levels according to the CDC.

Markowitz and Rosner remind us that society is measured by the treatment of its children. "For more than a hundred years, we have knowingly poisoned our children and destroyed the future of millions of our citizens." Lead in paint and gas has been foisted on us by "rapacious industries that have knowingly profited from our human suffering." The challenge for young pediatricians is that lead poisoning is a preventable disease.

Excellent book
By Nick Lees
I am a Professor in Environmental Management and found the material in this book to be very informative and thought provoking. My intent is to use the background and facts presented here in a case study on the politics of toxic substances in my class on the Interactions of Hazardous Materials. My industrial background included first hand experience with the Formaldehyde question back when the EPA and OSHA were considering significant regulatory changes after the initial valid rat study. I was employed by the industrial sector at the time and we were very intent on showing the true science behind the question, yet we still had the best interests of industry on the table at all times. I can readily see how the authors have honestly treated this dangerous exposure to the adverse health effects of very small amounts of lead in our environment. The actions on the part of the industrial sector here are deplorable and go beyond the effort to put the true science of the issue before the public and the health agency regulators.

A "must read" for parents of young children and those in the public health field.
By monoplygy
This is a well-written, easy to read, accurate account of how lead became so pervasive in the environment in general and in housing in particular. The book documents the struggles the City of Baltimore and Johns Hopkins University made to eliminate lead poisoning as a threat to the public health.

The book also outlines how the same political and economic pressures apply to other substances, such as bisphenol A.

The book contains extensive references to support the statements.

Manners and Mischief: Gender, Power, and Etiquette in JapanFrom University of California Press

Offering a concise, entertaining snapshot of Japanese society, Manners and Mischief examines etiquette guides, advice literature, and other such instruction for behavior from the early modern period to the present day and discovers how manners do in fact make the nation. Eleven accessibly written essays consider a spectrum of cases, from the geisha party to gay bar cool, executive grooming, and good manners for subway travel. Together, they show that etiquette is much more than fussy rules for behavior. In fact the idiom of manners, packaged in conduct literature, reveals much about gender and class difference, notions of national identity, the dynamics of subversion and conformity, and more. This richly detailed work reveals how manners give meaning to everyday life and extraordinary occasions, and how they can illuminate larger social and cultural transformations.

From the Inside Flap
"Manners and Mischief is a cohesive, stimulating volume. Reading these essays and the editors' enlightening introduction was a joy: I learned a great deal, smiled and laughed with uncommon regularity, and marveled at the quality of this remarkable collection." -William M. Tsutsui, author of Godzilla on My Mind

"This book is full of fascinating insights. Well-written and often witty, it captures a detailed snapshot of Japanese society in the early 21st century. I would say this is the most insightful book on modern Japan I have read in years." -Liza Dalby, anthropologist and novelist

Well-done, but offensive in its own way
By A. J. Sutter
This book is very successful at what it set out to do, which is to look at Japanese "etiquette manuals and manners guides" from a gender studies perspective. All of the essays are readable, though some more jargon-filled or methodologically self-conscious than others (I'll return to this in a moment). All of them also include the interesting or amusing factoids that one has come to expect from books about Japanese popular culture. E.g., I hadn't known that geisha are more concerned at pleasing their _iemoto_ (teachers in various traditional arts) than their customers; and I also learned about an entertaining-sounding TV drama that aired shortly before I moved here. An essay about the evolution of guides for foreigners with advice for dealing (or not) with Japanese manners was especially interesting, and Laura Miller's essay on offensive behavior, which ends the book, was the most fun. The publisher has admirably included not only footnotes but a unified bibliography, which to boot includes translations of Japanese titles, some of which are entertaining in their own right (e.g., "The first date: Doing that is wrong! Wrooong! 100 quick hints" and "Anthology of office lady taboos"). Were I to consider this dimension of the book alone, I'd give it 4.5 stars. The half-point deduction is for the dearth of illustrations: only one out of the 11 essays has any at all. In several of the others we're treated to descriptions of various manga, advertisements or woodcuts -- it would have been more enlightening to have seen them directly.

Readers should be cautioned that, the blurbs notwithstanding, this book doesn't give a "snapshot of Japanese society in the early twenty-first century." First of all, some of the essays focus in whole or in part on much earlier periods, including the Heian, Tokugawa and Meiji eras. Second, the focus is on etiquette manuals, advice columns and other guides, NOT on actual behavior. As emphasized in an essay about the 2006 bestseller, _Josei no hinkaku_ (The dignity of the woman), readers may reject the advice given in even the most popular guidebooks. (Despite that book's huge sales, it received mostly negative reviews on Amazon.) And finally, this "snapshot" is filtered through the categories of postmodern gender studies. This means that "messages" are "mediated," "identities" are "constructed," "norms" are "challenged," "bodies" (or the "pursuit" thereof) are "encoded" as well as being both "sites and objects of consumption," etc.

To be fair, there are plenty of other books that deploy this sort of jargon more thickly. But for all the political correctness in the essays, many exhibit a sort of "orientalism" -- most often an orientalism of cute (see, e.g., the cover, and the use of the word "mischief") -- that pervades too many books about Japan. (BTW there is little or nothing about "mischief" in this book.) Cultural and gender studies scholars produce a flood of books and articles about Japanese manga, anime, toys, monsters, fractured English, teenage girls, "sneaker culture" and other trendy cultural capital. Yet why don't we see a similar stream of product from English-speaking scholars about, say Swedish popular culture, or Saudi Arabian, or German? Search on Amazon and you'll find a few, but nothing like the output there is for Japan; and most of it is far more serious and political, not cute, wacky or quirky.

This is not an innocuous trend. It has a distancing effect that labels Japan as more "other" than other societies, or even as a "toy" society not to be taken seriously. Example: shortly after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, the New York Times ran an op-ed purporting to explain contemporary Japanese attitudes toward nuclear power on the basis of 60-year-old monster movies. Would anyone dare to use similar reasoning to explain attitudes toward nukes in Germany, Switzerland or France? Actually, peoples' concerns about nukes here are pretty much the same as those of people in, say, Pennsylvania: they're worried about their kids, their health, and their ability to stay in their communities. Seen in this light, the book's PC jargon struck me as hypocritical. I admit that I rationalize consuming a fair number of these Japanese cultural studies books on the grounds of there being a practical benefit to my understanding the local culture; but reading this one I began to feel a little creepy for facilitating what postmodernists might call an "anti-postcolonialist" trend in scholarship -- and what the rest of us can call a patronizing one, however affectionate its practitioners may believe they are being. Another fraction of a star deduction (the blame for this hypocrisy should be spread around over lots of books, not concentrated on this one), for a net of four stars.

Archaeology has always been marked by its particular care, obligation, and loyalty to things. While archaeologists may not share similar perspectives or practices, they find common ground in their concern for objects monumental and mundane. This book considers the myriad ways that archaeologists engage with things in order to craft stories, both big and small, concerning our relations with materials and the nature of the past.

Literally the “science of old things,” archaeology does not discover the past as it was but must work with what remains. Such work involves the tangible mediation of past and present, of people and their cultural fabric, for things cannot be separated from society. Things are us. This book does not set forth a sweeping new theory. It does not seek to transform the discipline of archaeology. Rather, it aims to understand precisely what archaeologists do and to urge practitioners toward a renewed focus on and care for things.

From the Inside Flap
“This book exhorts the reader to embrace the materiality of archaeology by recognizing how every step in the discipline’s scientific processes involves interaction with myriad physical artifacts, ranging from the camel-hair brush to profile drawings to virtual reality imaging. At the same time, the reader is taken on a phenomenological journey into various pasts, immersed in the lives of peoples from other times, compelled to engage their senses with the sights, smells, and noises of the publics and places whose remains they study. This is a refreshingly original and provocative look at the meaning of the material culture that lies at the foundation of the archaeological discipline.”—Michael Brian Schiffer, author of The Material Life of Human Beings

“This volume is a radical call to fundamentally rethink the ontology, profession, and practice of archaeology. The authors present a closely reasoned, epistemologically sound argument for why archaeology should be considered the discipline of things, rather than its more commonplace definition as the study of the human past through material traces. All scholars and students of archaeology will need to read and contemplate this thought-provoking book.”—Wendy Ashmore, Professor of Anthropology, UC Riverside

"A broad, illuminating, and well-researched overview of theoretical problems pertaining to archaeology. The authors make a calm defense of the role of objects against tedious claims of 'fetishism.'"—Graham Harman, author of The Quadruple Object

Life in Crisis: The Ethical Journey of Doctors Without Borders, by Peter Redfield

Life in Crisis tells the story of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders or MSF) and its effort to “save lives” on a global scale. Begun in 1971 as a French alternative to the Red Cross, the MSF has grown into an international institution with a reputation for outspoken protest as well as technical efficiency. It has also expanded beyond emergency response, providing for a wider range of endeavors, including AIDS care. Yet its seemingly simple ethical goal proves deeply complex in practice. MSF continually faces the problem of defining its own limits. Its minimalist form of care recalls the promise of state welfare, but without political resolution or a sense of well-being beyond health and survival. Lacking utopian certainty, the group struggles when the moral clarity of crisis fades. Nevertheless, it continues to take action and innovate. Its organizational history illustrates both the logic and the tensions of casting humanitarian medicine into a leading role in international affairs.

a must read
By Frantz Frantz
This book illuminates more than the history of Doctors Without Borders and takes us in the meanders of modern politics that have for goal to foster life. MSF is a critical lens through which fundamental ethical debates emerge. Too much too say about this very dense book. Pleasant surprise: it is an anthropology book, which, for the most part, are rather dry readings - but, here, subtle touches of humor, a real gift for descriptions and beautiful prose show that highly theoretical books can be fantastic readings.

The Fall and Rise of the Wetlands of California's Great Central Valley, by Philip Garone

This is the first comprehensive environmental history of California’s Great Central Valley, where extensive freshwater and tidal wetlands once provided critical habitat for tens of millions of migratory waterfowl. Weaving together ecology, grassroots politics, and public policy, Philip Garone tells how California’s wetlands were nearly obliterated by vast irrigation and reclamation projects, but have been brought back from the brink of total destruction by the organized efforts of duck hunters, whistle-blowing scientists, and a broad coalition of conservationists. Garone examines the many demands that have been made on the Valley’s natural resources, especially by large-scale agriculture, and traces the unforeseen ecological consequences of our unrestrained manipulation of nature. He also investigates changing public and scientific attitudes that are now ushering in an era of unprecedented protection for wildlife and wetlands in California and the nation.

From the Inside Flap
"This book has four great virtues. It covers the entire Central Valley; it is exhaustively researched; it demonstrates a keen knowledge of environmental sciences as well as history; and it is not a simple tale of the abuse or decline of nature. It is a hopeful story, one that deserves a broad audience. It will appeal to specialists in grasslands and wildlife ecology as well as those in the law, history, politics, and public policy."—Donald J. Pisani, author of Water and American Government: The Reclamation Bureau, National Water Policy, and the West, 1902-1935

“Everyone knows the Central Valley’s reputation for big agriculture, but few realize it was once an extraordinary natural place--with rich wetlands, forests, waterfowl, elk, and fish. Phil Garone’s fascinating new book fills a major gap in understanding this landscape at the heart of California. Breaking new ground, Garone weaves together the ecological history of the Central Valley with the human dreams and dramas that have utterly transformed it. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to find a deeper sense of place in the Central Valley.”—Ann Vilesis, author of Discovering the Unknown Landscape: A History of America's Wetlands and Kitchen Literacy

“No part of California’s natural landscape has experienced more profound change than the wetlands of the Great Central Valley. In this richly detailed study, Philip Garone offers a moving account of more than two centuries of human and ecological transformation. A cautionary and sometimes tragic tale of human endeavors in California’s heartland, Garone’s story is not only about loss and folly. Indeed, he presents readers with a more hopeful future for the state’s wetlands as well as reasons why such a future is absolutely imperative for all of us. This is a stunning environmental history.”—David Igler, author of Industrial Cowboys: Miller & Lux and the Transformation of the Far West, 1850-1920

"Philip Garone has written an important and fascinating study of California's Central Valley wetlands. Garone's work is particularly notable for his careful attention to both historical and ecological complexity. While never overlooking the dramatic losses sustained by these ecosystems, Garone gives us reasons to hope in his analyses of restoration projects that transcend departmental and disciplinary boundaries.” —Nancy Langston, Editor-Elect, Environmental History

Wetlands Drama
By Sallie Reynolds
Garone's book is an excellent history of California's Central Valley and its watershed - well researched, well written. And it is more than that. It is a tale of how humans have mismanaged wild lands, in ignorance, and how some of those areas can to some extent be restored. It takes more hard work, money, and foresight than you would imagine. Biologists have long told me that no land in the US is "wild" any more, it is all managed. But not until I read this book did I learn how extensive that management is. A third or more of the North American western waterbird population, which nests for the most part in Canada, winters in California's Central Valley. This means many millions of migratory waterfowl and shorebirds. Their presence and use of the land is ancient and important - they are a vital part of the balance of natural forces that protects species and land forms. (We forget often that the balance is equally important to us!) The birds almost vanished, thanks to the draining of the wetlands in the early 20th century, and those that survived did so by decimating the farm crops that had replaced their traditional feeding grounds. This books explains the compromises that allow humans to farm and birds to continue to exist. It's well told, convincing, dramatic, and in many ways global. These events are worldwide, but the end result is often not as heartening.

Interesting history
By The Spud Sr.
Tells the story without an extreme bias. Growing up in the central valley there were a lot of ponds ditches and seasonally flooded areas. This provided the habitat for wildlife. I am happy to see the pendulum swing back in a positive direction. Farmers and environmentalist both share a similar goal of better water use. I am looking forward to them working together on issues and projects they agree on.

Population Demography of Northern Spotted Owls (Studies in Avian Biology), by Eric D. Forsman

The Northern Spotted Owl, a threatened species that occurs in coniferous forests in the western United States, has become a well-known environmental symbol. But how is the owl actually faring? This book contains the results of a long-term effort by a large group of leading researchers to document population trends of the Northern Spotted Owl. The study was conducted on 11 areas in the Pacific Northwest from 1985 to 2008, and its objectives were both to evaluate population trends and to assess relationships between reproductive rates and recruitment of owls and covariates such as weather, habitat, and the invasion of a closely related species, the Barred Owl. Among other findings, the study shows that fecundity was declining in five populations, stable in three, and increasing in three areas. Annual apparent survival rates of adults were declining in 10 out of 11 areas. This broad, synthetic work provides the most complete and up-to-date picture of the population status of this inconspicuous forest owl, which is at the center of the complex and often volatile debate regarding the management of forest lands in the western United States.

Review
"One of the most exact and large-scale metapopulation analyses in the world."--"Luonnon Tutkija"

From the Inside Flap
"In addition to state of the art analysis of huge datasets, this monograph provides a wonderful example of cooperation among scientists and field biologists to achieve a common goal. The monograph provides an analysis template for any species whose conservation is controversial or its population analysis challenging. Therefore, it is a must-read for all population ecologists, wildlife biologists and managers, conservation biologists, and graduate students in these fields.”—R.J. Gutiérrez, University of Minnesota

“This state-of-the-art examination of the demography of the Northern Spotted Owl serves as a model of the information needed for truly scientific conservation of at-risk species. If only we could gather similar information for all plants and animals facing uncertain futures.”—John Faaborg, University of Missouri at Columbia

"This book on demography of spotted owl populations is an excellent and comprehensive contribution to the literature on ecology and conservation of owls. It warrants to be read by all biologists and naturalists interested in fascinating raptors and owls"--Erkki Korpimäki, University of Turku, Finland

Beyond the Metropolis: Second Cities and Modern Life in Interwar Japan, by Louise Young

In Beyond the Metropolis, Louise Young looks at the emergence of urbanism in the interwar period, a global moment when the material and ideological structures that constitute “the city” took their characteristic modern shape. In Japan, as elsewhere, cities became the staging ground for wide ranging social, cultural, economic, and political transformations. The rise of social problems, the formation of a consumer marketplace, the proliferation of streetcars and streetcar suburbs, and the cascade of investments in urban development reinvented the city as both socio-spatial form and set of ideas. Young tells this story through the optic of the provincial city, examining four second-tier cities: Sapporo, Kanazawa, Niigata, and Okayama. As prefectural capitals, these cities constituted centers of their respective regions. All four grew at an enormous rate in the interwar decades, much as the metropolitan giants did. In spite of their commonalities, local conditions meant that policies of national development and the vagaries of the business cycle affected individual cities in diverse ways. As their differences reveal, there is no single master narrative of twentieth century modernization. By engaging urban culture beyond the metropolis, this study shows that Japanese modernity was not made in Tokyo and exported to the provinces, but rather co-constituted through the circulation and exchange of people and ideas throughout the country and beyond.

Review
"[A] fascinating and wide-ranging study. . . . An enlightening message."--Alexander Jacoby"The Times Literary Supplement" (07/05/2013)"

"Stimulating... finely argued."--Lori Watt"Journal of Japanese Studies" (08/01/2015)

From the Inside Flap
"[Young] lays bare the urban-centrism of the modern age—the idea that the Japan’s destiny would be determined by the health of its cities—and shows it to be a co-production of citizens in second cities and the metropolitan core. Along the way she enriches our understanding of social class as well as regionalism. The ideas and practices of the city introduced in this book continue to define Japan to this day."—Andrew Gordon, Harvard University

"...An excellent, original [book] based on extensive research in Japanese primary and secondary sources. Young issues a powerful corrective to mainstream scholarship, which has long offered a narrative of nationwide modern developments in Japan based on the centralizing impulses of Tokyo-based culture and the bureaucratic state located in Tokyo... I strongly recommend [this book]."—Sheldon Garon, author of Molding Japanese Minds: The State in Everyday Life

About the Author
Louise Young is Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and author of Japan’s Total Empire: Manchuria and the Culture of Wartime Imperialism (UC Press, 1998).
