Alexander H. Harcourt is Professor Emeritus in the Anthropology Department at the University of California, Davis. He is the coauthor of Gorilla Society and coeditor of Coalitions and Alliances in Humans and Other Animals.

Best available over-view of the subject

Humans are an extraordinarily diverse species, who have found ways to survive almost everywhere on earth, contributing to the conceit that humans have "conquered" the planet. Harcourt, an evolutionary anthropologist and expert on the ecology and behavior of the other apes, brings an unusually broad perspective and rare insight to his discussions of how geography interacted with and shaped human anatomy, physiology and diversity and how interactions with other species affected us, and we them. This is the best available book on the subject as well a timely cautionary tale.
