The Nicest Kids in Town: American Bandstand, Rock 'n' Roll, and the Struggle for Civil Rights in 1950s Philadelphia, by Matthew F. Delmont

American Bandstand, one of the most popular television shows ever, broadcast from Philadelphia in the late fifties, a time when that city had become a battleground for civil rights. Counter to host Dick Clark’s claims that he integrated American Bandstand, this book reveals how the first national television program directed at teens discriminated against black youth during its early years and how black teens and civil rights advocates protested this discrimination. Matthew F. Delmont brings together major themes in American history—civil rights, rock and roll, television, and the emergence of a youth culture—as he tells how white families around American Bandstand’s studio mobilized to maintain all-white neighborhoods and how local school officials reinforced segregation long after Brown vs. Board of Education. The Nicest Kids in Town powerfully illustrates how national issues and history have their roots in local situations, and how nostalgic representations of the past, like the musical film Hairspray, based on the American Bandstand era, can work as impediments to progress in the present.

From the Inside Flap
“By challenging Dick Clark’s claim that he helped integrate American popular music and culture, Matthew Delmont puts the lie to Clark’s air-brushed history of American Bandstand’s role in racial desegregation. The Nicest Kids in Town shows how the nexus of sound, place, race, and space operated together to create and reinforce a myth of national memory and belonging. Just as importantly, this compelling cultural history demonstrates the importance of the youth market as a theater of struggle where brave young men and women—outraged by the discrimination and racism they faced for the simple act of enjoying music—refused to have their bodies, tastes, or desires policed. Delmont shows how the music moved them, and how in turn they moved the music onto television screens across America.”—Herman Gray, author of Cultural Moves.

“The Nicest Kids in Town speaks simultaneously to several significant current lines of inquiry among historians of the United States after World War II. Delmont takes on issues that we thought we already knew completely—the social and cultural history of the 1950s and ‘60s, the Civil Rights movement, the birth of television—but he brings original material to his story and connects these issues in new ways. Delmont’s work proves him to be a talented, careful, and thorough scholar, and in a large body of work on these topics, his book stands alone.”—Jay Mechling, author of On My Honor: Boy Scouts and the Making of American Youth.

Nicest Kids in Town
By atibamanii
I absolutely recommend this book to all Americans! Especially since the recent passing of Dick Clark.

Mr. Delmont reminds us of two important things about the U.S. in the 1950s & 1960s that still resonate in 2012. 1) American Bandstand was an American commercial enterprise that was not in the forefront of segregation, and 2) American Bandstand's mission was to reach a new growing teenaged consumer population. The show was designed for that from the beginning, meaning that its purpose was not only to reach as many teens as it could, and therefore sell as much product as possible, but also to keep from offending as many of those teens, and their parents, as possible.

You cannot have it both ways. You cannot increase your ratings on commercial television by taking a stand on a very controversial subject, such as race relations and integration were in the 1950s & 1960s. It couldn't be done then, and it can't be done now!

This is also an excellent history of segregation in housing, education, employment, and overall opportunity in Philadelphia that represents a microcosm of the United States.

This is a great book. It belongs with Race Beat and Warmth of Other Suns in telling the story of integration and racism in the U. S. This book talks about racism in Philadelphia- de facto segregation viewed as "different" from de jure segregation of the South. The story is woven around teens, the music industry, American Band Stand, civil rights activists, schools, a story more often told about the South than the third largest city at the time in America.

Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations, by David R. Montgomery

Dirt, soil, call it what you want—it's everywhere we go. It is the root of our existence, supporting our feet, our farms, our cities. This fascinating yet disquieting book finds, however, that we are running out of dirt, and it's no laughing matter. An engaging natural and cultural history of soil that sweeps from ancient civilizations to modern times, Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations explores the compelling idea that we are—and have long been—using up Earth's soil. Once bare of protective vegetation and exposed to wind and rain, cultivated soils erode bit by bit, slowly enough to be ignored in a single lifetime but fast enough over centuries to limit the lifespan of civilizations. A rich mix of history, archaeology and geology, Dirt traces the role of soil use and abuse in the history of Mesopotamia, Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, China, European colonialism, Central America, and the American push westward. We see how soil has shaped us and we have shaped soil—as society after society has risen, prospered, and plowed through a natural endowment of fertile dirt. David R. Montgomery sees in the recent rise of organic and no-till farming the hope for a new agricultural revolution that might help us avoid the fate of previous civilizations.

The life you save may be your own
By Michael Brown
This is an excellent overview of soil formation and the cultural and ecological ramifications of its degradation and loss. One might say it is a cultural study of soil, rather than a scientific publication. Unlike other books about soil generation and degradation there are not the seemingly requisite pages of diagrams and chemical equations that would be found among publications by and for soil biologists. This is a very interesting and engaging book, with a really helpful survey of multiple cultures through time and does not read like yet another 'cautionary tale' of how everything will be destroyed within the next five years so it is time to start living off the grid and await the Great Collapse. That being said, the author as a scientist makes real cogent arguments and draws upon history to show how those who ignored or abused their soil, often simply by being unaware or unable to perceive and change their cultivation practices, often fell into decline, obscurity or ultimately effective disappearance.

More Precious Than Gold
By Houyhnhnm
I wish I could give David Montgomery's _Dirt_ six stars. Without vilifying mankind, Montgomery traces our mistreatment of arable land from the beginning of agriculture in Neolithic times through great civilizations and some minor ones, taking us right up to modern times. He details how population pressures and other factors caused and continue to cause the depletion of topsoil.

As well as being informative, _Dirt_ contains some of the most effective writing I've read in years, and I say that as someone who teaches academic writing. While this book contains a good many unpleasant truths, Montgomery's highly readable prose encouraged me to turn pages. For example, Montgomery's use of vivid images removes the dry abstraction from statistical information. This is from page four: "Each year, America's farms shed enough soil to fill a pickup truck for every family in the country. . . . An estimated twenty-four billion tons of soil are lost annually around the world--several tons for each person on the planet." He also captures complex generalities in concise, direct language. Here, he's talking about the effect of a growing population on late Medieval Europe: "An increasing demand for crops meant less pasture, little overwinter animal fodder, and not enough manure to sustain soil fertility" (93).

Page after page, across time and continents, Montgomery documents mankind's devastating use and misuse of dirt. Even his plain, slightly vulgar title is beautifully chosen. He more than proves that dirt, far from being cheap, is more precious than gold. I'm tempted to say the same about _Dirt_.

Surfing the Waves of Time with Soils and Men
By MollyM/CA
If this terrific tale of soil and civilization were a novel, it would be one of the most enthralling I've ever read. But it's not a novel --it's a multifaceted study of the soils that support and nourishes us -- what it is, how we use and abuse it, where civilizations that threw it away went, how the very landscape was changed by them. Montgomery makes the waves of civilization and soils, populations and soils, as vivid as a Hollywood extravaganza; makes vast landscapes and histories from beyond the edge of human time come alive. An hour with the book and I'm wobbly from surfing the waves of history and prehistory, rising and falling with soils and the civilizations that destroyed them.

Nicely illustrated with drawings from the periods under discussion but I wish the publisher had been generous enough to allow the author to add photos, maps, graphs, timelines, to make the visions the story evokes more concrete and accurate.

A good book to give a gardener, a plant ecologist (like me -- and I wish I'd had a course built around this book when I was in school!), a farmer, a cook, and I only wish that every lawmaker and ag-associated bureaucrat could be made to read it.

States of Delinquency: Race and Science in the Making of California's Juvenile Justice System (American Crossroads), by Miroslava Chavez-G

This unique analysis of the rise of the juvenile justice system from the nineteenth to twentieth centuries uses one of the harshest states—California—as a case study for examining racism in the treatment of incarcerated young people of color. Using rich new untapped archives, States of Delinquency is the first book to explore the experiences of young Mexican Americans, African Americans, and ethnic Euro-Americans in California correctional facilities including Whittier State School for Boys and the Preston School of Industry. Miroslava Chávez-García examines the ideologies and practices used by state institutions as they began to replace families and communities in punishing youth, and explores the application of science and pseudo-scientific research in the disproportionate classification of youths of color as degenerate. She also shows how these boys and girls, and their families, resisted increasingly harsh treatment and various kinds of abuse, including sterilization.

Review
"Recommended."--"Choice"

"[States of Delinquency] is a tour de force of historical research. . . . A valuable resource for the student and the citizen."--"Criminal Law & Crim Justice Bks / Criminal Justice Abstracts"

From the Inside Flap
“Miroslava Chávez-García digs into long-forgotten files and humanizes the forgotten victims of injustice. States of Delinquency exposes the hidden racial dynamics of California’s juvenile justice system and makes us re-think the history of the child-saving movement.”—Tony Platt, author of The Child Savers: The Invention of Delinquency

“Impressively researched and passionately argued, States of Delinquency shows how racial prejudice and bogus social science reshaped early twentieth century juvenile corrections in California. Chavez-Garcia recreates both the everyday world of reform schools and the lives of delinquent youth, especially minorities, who were unfortunate enough to be confined there (or, worse, reassigned to special hospitals for sterilization). This book is an innovative, disquieting, and vividly detailed contribution to historical scholarship on the theory and practice of American juvenile justice.”—Steven Schlossman, author of Transforming Juvenile Justice.

“A fascinating and compelling study that reconstructs the forgotten lives of California's marginalized and criminalized youth. States of Delinquency illuminates the unsettling history of the juvenile justice system and demonstrates its relevance to the disproportionate incarceration of racial and ethnic minorities today.”—Alexandra Minna Stern, author of Eugenic Nation: Faults and Frontiers of Better Breeding in Modern America.

About the Author
Miroslava Chávez-García is Associate Professor of Chicano/a Studies at the University of California, Davis. She is the author of Negotiating Conquest: Gender and Power in California, 1770s to 1880s.

I found the reading to be very informative and illuminating. The statistic of the number of children (yes, children) sterilized is jaw dropping. Is it dry? A little, but that's no reason to not read this book.

Should Be required Reading for Historians and Sociologists
By moore714
I grew up in and lived in Whittier. all my life I had no idea what went on behind the fence at Nelles. This book should be required reading. I am shocked at the amount of abuse and racism that went on at that "school. "

The author writes in a matter of fact style with plenty of facts and figures. However I did not find this to be a negative in that subject matter is so interesting and important. It is extremely well researched.

Just get past the first chapter which is a bit dry. But after that .......... I could not put it down. I read it in two days.

Across Atlantic Ice: The Origin of America's Clovis Culture, by Dennis J. Stanford, Bruce A. Bradley

Who were the first humans to inhabit North America? According to the now familiar story, mammal hunters entered the continent some 12,000 years ago via a land bridge that spanned the Bering Sea. Distinctive stone tools belonging to the Clovis culture established the presence of these early New World people. But are the Clovis tools Asian in origin? Drawing from original archaeological analysis, paleoclimatic research, and genetic studies, noted archaeologists Dennis J. Stanford and Bruce A. Bradley challenge the old narrative and, in the process, counter traditional—and often subjective—approaches to archaeological testing for historical relatedness. The authors apply rigorous scholarship to a hypothesis that places the technological antecedents of Clovis in Europe and posits that the first Americans crossed the Atlantic by boat and arrived earlier than previously thought. Supplying archaeological and oceanographic evidence to support this assertion, the book dismantles the old paradigm while persuasively linking Clovis technology with the culture of the Solutrean people who occupied France and Spain more than 20,000 years ago.

From the Inside Flap
"Across Atlantic Ice is brilliant and ground-breaking. As fascinating as it is controversial, this book brings together decades of research from diverse areas into a single volume that is well argued, factually rich, elegantly written--and absolutely riveting. I could not put it down." —Douglas Preston, author of Cities of Gold, Thunderhead, and former archaeology correspondent for The New Yorker magazine

“In their well-written and well-reasoned exploration of the first inhabitants of the Americas, Dennis Stanford and Bruce Bradley have provided a viable alternative scenario. I am not a trained professional, but I have been reading the archeological literature for thirty-five years. Their argument is logical and should be given an open-minded hearing.” —Jean M. Auel, author of The Land of Painted Caves and The Clan of the Cave Bear

“This carefully crafted, well-researched book aims to change our thinking of who the first Americans were and where they came from. Stanford and Bradley have produced an ambitious, interdisciplinary study of a neglected route of early entry into the Americas that will affect the way the larger narrative of the first chapter of human history in the New World is written.” —Tom D. Dillehay, author of The Settlement of the Americas: A New Prehistory

Across Atlantic Ice - Hot Debate in the Face of Cold Fact
By Richard White
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, we were hit full on by the storm of New Archeology, which promised a whole new way, a scientific way, of explaining what archeological remains could tell us about the evolution of human behavior. Now, some 40 or 50 years later, archeology is still basically the same as it was before New became old archeology. A generation or two of archeologists raised on Popper and Hempill have come and gone, and much of the philosophy of science understood by archeologists today is still based on the Popper and Hempill models of half a century ago.

Experimental archeology was a (small) part of the New Archeology. Primarily it involved faunal analysis, and the application of ethnographic and experimental data to explaining the nature of bone assemblages and the behavior which produced them. Binford and his students led the way in this endeavor, and I view their results as some of the best, and only, useful products of the New Archeology.

Experimental lithic technology studies were conducted, to be sure. But for the most part, these concentrated on "discovering" the methods used to manufacture lithic tools in a very mechanistic sort of way, or to discover possible uses to which the tools might have been put. As important as those studies were, they seldom really got to human behavior, and almost never to providing a useful way to trace the development and spread of either the technology, or, more importantly, the groups of people who were making their way in an evolving landscape using those tools.

Across Atlantic Ice is not one of those aforementioned studies. It is what those studies should have been. Written by Dennis Stanford, a long-term maverick archeologist who has been forcing us to look at the possibility of pre-Clovis occupation of the New World for many years, and by Bruce Bradley, without any doubt the most accomplished and widely experienced flint knapper alive today, the book suggests a new hypothesis to explain the origin, both technologically and geographically, of the Clovis culture. To give away the plot without further ado, Stanford and Bradley argue for an origin of Clovis (and pre-Clovis) technology with the Solutrean culture of France and Spain. They marshal a considerable corpus of data in support of this hypothesis from a wide variety of disciplines - paleontology, geology, geochronology and of course, archeology. They describe Clovis technology in great detail, pulling together the work of many researchers, as well as their own research. They carefully lay out what they see as the three potential candidates for the antecedents of Clovis technology, and describe each in detail. Their comparisons are detailed and extensive.

In identifying the complex biface thinning technology of southwestern Europe as the progenitor of Clovis, they also rely heavily on Bradley's analysis of the manufacturing process of both Solutrean lithics and Clovis lithics. Unlike the earlier, much more mechanistic investigations of lithic technology, Bradley seems to view the manufacture of a lithic tool as a series of problems which confront the knapper, and which must be addressed by conscious choices as to technique, raw material and tools used. Bradley conveys the nature of those choices as a human behavior amenable to analysis in a way other knappers have not.

One of the interesting points of their arguments involves the identification of specific, detailed similarities in the lithic complexes they analyze as more likely to carry information about the true relationships of those complexes, and hence the people responsible for them, than higher level, broader and more general resemblances, which they regard as more likely to be due to a sort of cultural convergence. This approach mirrors closely that of cladistic analysis in phylogenetic reconstruction. For example, they identify one very specific technique, overshot flaking, as so specialized, and so restricted in time and space (it is a significant component of only two complexes, Clovis and Solutrean) that it surely evidences a close relationship between the people responsible. In cladistic analysis, such traits are called "synapomorphies," that is, shared derived characters, which are the only similarities that can be used to infer phylogenetic relationships. I would offer here that some of the numerical, computerized methods used in discovering relationships between different taxa in a quantifiable and testable way, might be applied to analysis of lithic complexes. It would add a further level of sophistication to the "three taxa" analyses that Stanford and Bradley have worked out manually.

I will not belabor the rich fabric of evidence which the authors have woven for us readers. As the author of the book's Forward, Michael Collins notes, they've laid out the evidence. Much more needs to be done in order to test their hypothesis, and I am sure that this book will be responsible for encouraging much of that work to be done, particularly by those who will, and already have, vociferously opposed their ideas. My suspicion is that, unlike most crazy ideas, this one is an example of Shopenhauer's process. It is only a matter of time, I believe, until the present naysayers will be telling us that they knew it all along.

In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit to knowing one of the authors (Bradley) as well as the author of the Forward (Collins). All that means is that I have some little exposure ( decades ago) to Bradley's consummate skill as a knapper, and to Collins' abilities as an archeologist and a scientist. Although they may not remember or realize it, both taught me important lessons in those long past days.

time to consider a paradigm shift
By A. Foulks
I have been awaiting this book hypothesizing a Solutrean origin for the Clovis culture for many years, in the meantime subsisting on the bits of information the authors have leaked through journal articles and lectures. Finally their book-length alternative hypothesis of the origins of the early American "Clovis" culture is out.
As an archaeologist who specializes in stone tools analysis, and a mediocre flintknapper, I have to say that the totality of the similarities between Solutrean culture and Clovis culture is very compelling. This is especially true if sites such as Meadowcroft and Cactus Hill are being correctly interpreted as bridging the time gap between these two (putatively related) cultures. It is a very difficult thing to describe the profound changes one has to make when switching from one culture's tool manufacturing method to another's, and I don't think it was done totally successfully in this book, but as a flintknapper I agree that if ANY two sophisticated prehistoric groups made their tools the same way, it was these two.
Above all, I think this book should be seen as a challenge to do new research, including that which may not assume all early Americans came from Asia. This book doesn't refute that there sites proximal to the Pacific coast of the Americas that DO represent Asian migration; they are only saying that a different wave of migrants was responsible for Clovis culture. As they opined (p. 185), if the Solutrean culture were found in Siberia, everybody would immediately recognize it as the progenitor of Clovis. Another strong point in the book is the review of LGM(last Glacial maximum) environments in BOTH eastern Siberia and southwest Europe. If crossing thousands of kilometers of ice edge (the Atlantic route) seems impossibly daunting, the long-favored northern Siberian route to America seems just as unappealing (horrific storms in winter, raging rivers in spring, and mushy bug-infested lands in summer). Hard to imagine either route being plausible, to those of us who live in modern technological comfort; but SOMEBODY did it in the distant past. Why not more than one group?
I have my nitpicks with the presentation. For instance, the index is terrible. I looked in vain for "Ramah chert" and "Suwannee complex", which I knew from previous exposure to the hypothesis were key elements in this model of Clovis origins. They are covered in the text, but are not listed in the index. Another weak point was on p. 42 (Figure 2.5): the scattershot distribution of Clovis site dates didn't make the intended case at all, that Clovis culture is older in the East than in the West. Finally, after painstakingly telling the reader how far it is between early sites in Siberia and those in interior North America; they were very reluctant to actually disclose the distance Solutrean hunters would have had to cross (with their families) in order to establish a viable population in eastern North America [it is roughly 6,000 km; or 4,000 mi.]. Better to have stated that right away, and then used the distances between Siberia to interior northwest America to mitigate the shock of it. Again, SOMEBODY made the journey, no matter how difficult it was, or there wouldn't have been people in the Americas.
My biggest criticism: the authors' interchangeable use of "hypothesis" and "theory". I don't let students in my 100-level course make that mistake. What we have here is an HYPOTHESIS supported by some observed facts; one that is just begging for testing (by both traditional and innovative methods).
I thank the authors for their courage; they've long been aware of the severe criticism this model has inspired. As they noted, similarities between Solutrean culture in western Europe and Clovis culture in North America have been observed before; but it would have been professional suicide for a graduate student to present such an idea, as entrenched as the "Siberian origin of New World peoples" was. Stanford and Bradley have unassailable research reputations, and they are late enough in their careers to take this risk.
One of my most important reactions to this book: I appreciate it as a statement against entrenchment and political correctness in science. The ideal of science being "let the data take you where it will" is seldom practiced in reality. The reality is that, now that we've had access to archaeological finds in Siberia (since the fall of the USSR), there is NO valid progenitor to Clovis technology to be found there. I suppose the fear is that American archaeologists (most of whom are Anglo.) will be labeled "racist" by suggesting that any of the first Americans came from Europe. Newsflash: the Native Americans are offended that anyone would suggest that they haven't ALWAYS been here in the Americas, so we've already offended them. And sadly, if an archaeologist from, say, Africa or Asia had suggested the "Solutrean hypothesis", we would have just dismissed them as "out of touch" with paleo-American archaeology. That's one accusation nobody can make about these authors.
The other reality of modern archaeology is that humans have clearly proven their intrepid exploration abilities time and again: from expanding into temperate areas during the early Ice Age, to colonizing offshore islands as much as hundreds of thousands of years ago, to our recent history of Moon landings in what already seem like impossibly flimsy spacecraft. And yet, archaeologists consistently underestimate early man's drive to explore; and fail to even search for sites in accordance with that underestimation. Let's stop being so timid, and find ways to be intrepid ourselves, such as developing new techniques to do underwater archaeology, which might illuminate the human occupation of landscapes now deep underwater, including those that could just lead this to being our new paradigm of Clovis origins.

This is Exciting, not just a Texbook
By James B. Bryant
This is the book that amateurs, like me, and professionals have been waiting for, a reasonable argument for early peopling of the Americas from Europe. My review of a precursor book, Paleoamerican Origins: Beyond Clovis on Amazon.com, noted Dr. Stanford's dedication to overcome the Clovis first mentality with data. Across Atlantic Ice uses new discoveries and data analysis to present reasonable proof that travel across the Atlantic Ocean and ice did happen during Neolithic times.
Going down to the sea in ships has always been risky and requires the right mix of technical innovation and skillful seamanship to succeed. I have seen this first hand in Nuclear Submarines, including Attack Submarine Command (SSN 612) during the Cold War. The ability for vessels to carrying heavy loads, quickly over long distances would have been obvious even in Neolithic times.
This book is controversial, but that it is why it is important to read. If you are not an expert you may be challenged to understand all the concepts, but it is well worth the effort.

Involved, very scholarly work on the 20th Cent. MidEast
By David W. Nicholas
This is the sort of book I have been looking for a long time. I've read other books on the Middle East which purport to have a similar focus, but which are instead incomplete, notably "Sowing the Wind". This book, by contrast, maintains the focus rather carefully and provides a concise history of the whole region. It looks as if the book was written as a textbook for (I would presume) grad students studying the subject, but really any intelligent person can pick it up and learn a great deal.

An issue with a book like this is the tone of the work, how well the author writes. Kamrava isn't the second coming of Hemingway, but he's not too bad, either. The book is divided into two portions: first, a historical section that gives you an overview of the region's history, and second a topical section that looks at various issues that impact the region currently. The first section is very readable, the second less so (who actually enjoys reading about economics?). The author, however, does a good job (for the most part) of not sounding like a university professor telling you about something, though he does occasionally use words that are obscure, especially in terms of sub-regions of the Mid East.

I still enjoyed this book, thought I got a lot out of it, and would recommend it. The author seems to be a hair more optimistic about the prospects for peace and prosperity in the region than I am, but he makes a good case for his point of view, and the result is interesting.

Basically a pop-history text

First the writing style is easy to read and shifts time, place, and person reasonably well. But there is so much the author doesn't cover. The Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the Persian Gulf is what the author devotes most of his powers of deduction and induction on, making this way overpriced for its limited range of discourse. Someone new to Middle Eastern studies will benefit from this but not enough to be unable to answer the most basic questions about Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen (along with UAE is barely mentioned at all in the text.

I would recommend "The Government and Politics of the Middle East and North Africa" by David Long, over this book if a person is truly looking to get both scope and scale w/ their Middle Eastern text.

This Book Will Make Clear a Very Complex Topic
By Nicholas Payne
My brother recommended this book for me as a highly informative volume on modern middle eastern history. I must say that I am glad that he did. After reading it I felt that I gained a more clear view on the history of the middle east, was better able to understand current events and policies there and their ramifications, and got a decent sense of the social, political, and economic forces that continue to shape the region.

Here is how Kamrava has created such an effective book. First, Kamrava is always uses appropriate academic language and defines terms for the reader when new concepts are introduced. Complicated topics like nationalism, pan Arabism, and Islam are introduced, defined, and discussed in relation to the history being presented at each stage of the book. Kamrava is also effective in delineating the Arab, Muslim, and national identities and how each have grown and diminished, overlapped and separated during various periods in the middle east. Understanding these dynamics are critical to analyzing the middle east past and present.
If learning about the middle east and it's people from a socio-political perspective is a goal of yours, "The Modern Middle East: A Political History since the First World War" should be a stop along the way.

Latinos, Inc.: The Marketing and Making of a People, by Arlene Dávila

Both Hollywood and corporate America are taking note of the marketing power of the growing Latino population in the United States. And as salsa takes over both the dance floor and the condiment shelf, the influence of Latin culture is gaining momentum in American society as a whole. Yet the increasing visibility of Latinos in mainstream culture has not been accompanied by a similar level of economic parity or political enfranchisement. In this important, original, and entertaining book, Arlene Dávila provides a critical examination of the Hispanic marketing industry and of its role in the making and marketing of U.S. Latinos.

Dávila finds that Latinos' increased popularity in the marketplace is simultaneously accompanied by their growing exotification and invisibility. She scrutinizes the complex interests that are involved in the public representation of Latinos as a generic and culturally distinct people and questions the homogeneity of the different Latino subnationalities that supposedly comprise the same people and group of consumers. In a fascinating discussion of how populations have become reconfigured as market segments, she shows that the market and marketing discourse become important terrains where Latinos debate their social identities and public standing.

Uncorking the Past: The Quest for Wine, Beer, and Other Alcoholic Beverages, by Patrick E. McGovern

In a lively tour around the world and through the millennia, Uncorking the Past tells the compelling story of humanity's ingenious, intoxicating quest for the perfect drink. Following a tantalizing trail of archaeological, chemical, artistic, and textual clues, Patrick E. McGovern, the leading authority on ancient alcoholic beverages, brings us up to date on what we now know about how humans created and enjoyed fermented beverages across cultures. Along the way, he explores a provocative hypothesis about the integral role such libations have played in human evolution. We discover, for example, that the cereal staples of the modern world were probably domesticated for their potential in making quantities of alcoholic beverages. These include the delectable rice wines of China and Japan, the corn beers of the Americas, and the millet and sorghum drinks of Africa. Humans also learned how to make mead from honey and wine from exotic fruits of all kinds-even from the sweet pulp of the cacao (chocolate) fruit in the New World. The perfect drink, it turns out-whether it be mind-altering, medicinal, a religious symbol, a social lubricant, or artistic inspiration-has not only been a profound force in history, but may be fundamental to the human condition itself.

"Our world is awash in ethanol"
By Chambolle
So says Patrick McGovern, and this book explains how it got that way. McGovern theorizes that organisms great and small, perhaps from the unicellular to non-human primates to humans, are hard wired to crave the products of sugar fermentation, particularly alcohol. This taste for fermented beverages has been a driving force in the evolution of human biology, agriculture, culture and religion, or so it would seem. McGovern documents this evolution through archeological findings from Europe, Africa, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East -- anywhere and everywhere wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages have been made for many thousands of years, from grain, fruit, honey and whatever other raw material mankind could coax into creating intoxicating food and drink. We are, as McGovern has entitled his very first chapter, "Homo Imbibens."

As the book concludes, summing up the theme, "our species' intimate relationship with fermented beverages over millions of years has, in large measure, made us what we are today."

Being neither an archeologist nor a paleontologist, I found some of the copious detail presented in this book to be tough sledding. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating read and worth the effort.

From the big picture to the tiniest detail
By mrthinkndrink
Simply an outstanding book of scholarship. McGovern is a scientist who speaks fluent vernacular, which for most of us is a blessing. This is a remarkably inclusive survey of worldwide alcoholic beverage production and consumption from the end of the last ice age through the age of the Greeks. Though much of the book deals with the beginnings and subsequent evolution of wine and beer, he touches on drinks, ceremonies and rituals involving fermentation of myriad fruits, honey and starch laden grains from South America to China to Africa. One can't help but be impressed by the widespread use of alcohol by almost every societal group on earth. The picture painted by the author is of an ancient world practically awash in mixed drinks (beer, wine, and honey mixed together being a common one) and a remarkable diversity of stand alone wine and beer styles, often infused with herbs and flavorings, many hallucinatory, to enable the priests and leaders of early societies to commune with their particular gods and goddesses. These drinks have not only been an integral part of human life for thousands of years but may well have been the impetus behind agricultural domestication, human migration and trade and the spread of dominant cultures.
For any student of the human condition, of the development of ritual and religion, of the emergence of humanity from our earliest hominid ancestors - and certainly for any thoughtful devotee of wine or beer, I highly recommend Uncorking The Past.

Egyptian workers on the Pyramids had a ration of 4 to 5 liters of beer per day.
By lyndonbrecht
This is a fascinating read. He has done archaeology all over the place and lots of analyses of the remains of dregs in pots and containers--dull sounding but that's how we find out what those containers were used for. McGovern says many of those containers were used for beer. He may be a scientist, but he is also a good writer, and while there is some science that many readers may find slow, it is all accessible and helpful in understanding his points.

One important point is that he argues that at least some of the grains that can be turned into beer were not domesticated for food but because of their alcohol-making potential. Maize for example (we Americans call it corn) has sugars that can be made into alcohol. This may seem a wild theory, but he makes a good case for the hypothesis.

He has gotten microbreweries interested in using ancient "recipes" to see what the stuff tastes like. The book is full of odd facts such as that gthe Egyptian workers on the Pyramids had daily rations of 2 to 3 loaves of bread and 4 to 5 liters of beer. Beer of course would have been a rather nutritious food and likely the water was impure.
