This collection of the Clemens family's private writings was a pure joy to read. I enjoyed the presentation of the pieces and the rich history they represent. Mark Twain strongly focused on the theme of nurture over nature in how he described the upbringing of his children. He mentioned multiple times how the family's servants influenced the training of Susy, Clare and Jean.
Susy's description of her father was my favorite among the writings. She seemed to have an excellent grasp of who her father was both as a public figure and a private person.
A Family Sketch and Other Private Writings would make an excellent gift book for fans of Mark Twain, as well as study material for schools offering seminars on his life and writing. I am delighted to have received a copy.
