The Musical Legacy of Wartime France (California Studies in 20th-Century Music), by Leslie A. Sprout

For the three forces competing for political authority in France during World War II, music became the site of a cultural battle that reflected the war itself. German occupying authorities promoted German music at the expense of French, while the Vichy administration pursued projects of national renewal through culture. Meanwhile, Resistance networks gradually formed to combat German propaganda while eyeing Vichy’s efforts with suspicion. In The Musical Legacy of Wartime France, Leslie A. Sprout explores how each of these forces influenced the composition, performance, and reception of five well-known works: the secret Resistance songs of Francis Poulenc and those of Arthur Honegger; Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, composed in a German prisoner of war camp; Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, one of sixty-five pieces commissioned by Vichy between 1940 and 1944; and Igor Stravinsky’s Danses concertantes, which was met at its 1945 Paris premiere with protests that prefigured the aesthetic debates of the early Cold War. Sprout examines not only how these pieces were created and disseminated during and just after the war, but also how and why we still associate these pieces with the stories we tell—in textbooks, program notes, liner notes, historical monographs, and biographies—about music, France, and World War II.

From the Inside Flap
"Sprout’s book addresses a singular – and singularly compelling – period in modern French history, and does so with a remarkable degree of insight and nuance. It is bound to make an important contribution to twentieth-century music history."—Eric Drott, author of Music and Elusive Revolution

“Leslie A. Sprout has written a sophisticated and nuanced book about the complex realities of French culture under Nazi rule, and the relationships between music and politics. It is also an original and successful attempt to describe how the first representations of postwar times created long-lasting misconceptions on the past. Far from opposing history and memory, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of both historical realities and historical legends.”—Henry Rousso, Institut d’histoire du temps présent (Centre national de la recherche scientifique, Paris)

Bottled Up: How the Way We Feed Babies Has Come to Define Motherhood, and Why It Shouldn't, by Suzanne Barston

As the subject of a popular web reality series, Suzanne Barston and her husband Steve became a romantic, ethereal model for new parenthood. Called “A Parent is Born,” the program’s tagline was “The journey to parenthood . . . from pregnancy to delivery and beyond.” Barston valiantly surmounted the problems of pregnancy and delivery. It was the “beyond” that threw her for a loop when she found that, despite every effort, she couldn’t breastfeed her son, Leo. This difficult encounter with nursing—combined with the overwhelming public attitude that breast is not only best, it is the yardstick by which parenting prowess is measured—drove Barston to explore the silenced, minority position that breastfeeding is not always the right choice for every mother and every child.

Part memoir, part popular science, and part social commentary, Bottled Up probes breastfeeding politics through the lens of Barston’s own experiences as well as those of the women she has met through her popular blog, The Fearless Formula Feeder. Incorporating expert opinions, medical literature, and popular media into a pithy, often wry narrative, Barston offers a corrective to our infatuation with the breast. Impassioned, well-reasoned, and thoroughly researched, Bottled Up asks us to think with more nuance and compassion about whether breastfeeding should remain the holy grail of good parenthood.

From Publishers Weekly
Blogger/editor Barston had every intention of breastfeeding her newborn son, but the baby's severe intolerance to breast milk along with other factors thwarted her efforts. Feeling conflicted, defensive, and guilty, she spent two years researching the ups and downs of bottle and breastfeeding. Her text interweaves memoir and reporting as she scouts recent medical literature, interviews experts, and recounts her own tale as a lactation-challenged Hester Prynne. Barston makes clear that she is not antibreastfeeding; rather, her goal is to lay out the facts and examine the research so that each mother can decide for herself. Breastfeeding, she asserts, is not for every woman, whether for medical, psychological, professional, or many other reasons. She advocates a new outlook on infant feeding: one that refuses to embrace a one-size-fits-all strategy. While much has been done to support the breastfeeding mother, Barston argues, formula feeders have often been judged unfairly, without due attention to each woman's individual circumstances. Society's goal, she contends, should be to support all mothers in their right to choose what is best for themselves, their babies, and their families. Formula-feeding parents will find support, information, and encouragement in this well-researched and compassionate text, and breastfeeding moms and advocates will benefit from Barston's authentic experience and perspective as well. (Oct.)

Review
"Barston’s short and well-researched book . . . based on two years’ of interviews with pediatricians, researchers, sociologists, statisticians and fellow feminists will either help expectant moms make personal decisions, or potentially reassure them if they find themselves unable to breastfeed when they had wanted to do so." - Top 10 Books to Gift at a Baby Shower

  (Brain, Child 2015-08-03)

From the Inside Flap
“Barston's defense of bottlefeeding declares a moratorium on using motherhood as a dumping ground for our cultural anxieties and ambivalences. Through the deft interweave of personal narrative and sharp analysis, Bottled Up reveals how mother-blaming, sloppy science and deficient policies are far more pernicious that artificial milk." —Chris Bobel, author of The Paradox of Natural Mothering

“Bottled Up is a truly timely book. It is testament to how messed up things have become when it comes to motherhood that it even had to be written. The end result is a serious, engaging, challenging and also accessible account, drawing on the best of scholarship, science and journalism.”—Ellie Lee, Director of the Centre for Parenting Culture Studies, University of Kent

"“This is an informative and well-reasoned book that looks acutely at the meaning of baby feeding alternatives. It will be helpful to mothers, no matter what their choice."—Sydney Z. Spiesel, Ph.D. M.D., Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, Yale University School of Medicine

“This book is a must-read for every woman and man who is fed-up with the shaming and blaming of bottle-feeding parents. Barston explains with evidence, anecdote and humour why breast isn't always best and why women will never be free to enjoy their babies and map the maternal landscape until infant feeding decisions are no longer used as a test of good motherhood.”—Dr. Leslie Cannold, author of The Book of Rachael

Barston gives a heartfelt defense of mothers who go against the dogma of Breastfeeding Over All Else. Based on both personal experience and expert consultations, her conclusion: occasionally it's healthier not to breastfeed, and anyway don't stress about it. Surprisingly, such a reasonable point of view is poorly represented in the Mommy Wars. Barston's book is a welcome contribution."—Sam Wang, Ph.D., Princeton University, co-author of Welcome To Your Child's Brain: How the Mind Develops from Conception to College.

Just Feed the Baby!
By Jeff Watson
My wife breast fed both our babies for more than 2 years each. My wife had her children in the early 1980's and during pre-natal classes, was asked whether she wanted to breastfeed or formula feed and was unconditionally supported, as were all mothers in Australia at that time, in whatever feeding method she chose. She was a wonderful mother!

My daughter formula fed each of her three babies and I'm not going to tell you why because, quite frankly, it doesn't matter! My daughter had her children between 2006 and 2010 at a 'baby-friendly' hospital where she was told she 'failed to breastfeed', made to feel she was the only mother who was unable to successfully feed, then given no instructions on how to safely prepare a bottle of formula. She, also, proved to be a wonderful mother!

Times were certainly different, yet both my wife and daughter are wonderful mothers who cared for their children in the best way they possibly could, with unconditional love... after all, what normal mother doesn't do what is best for her babies?

And I believe this to be the main point to Suzanne Barston's debut book Bottled Up, which was a wonderful and easy read with just the right mixture of personal experiences, humour, and well researched facts.

Mothering is not an easy task and every mother and every family and every baby is different with different individual needs... so every mother should be supported unconditionally in whatever she has decided is best for her, her baby, and her family.

Bottled Up will go a long way to re-enforcing that viewpoint and I'd highly recommend every prospective mother read this book, before the baby arrives!

I'd simply say, from a man's point of view, "just feed the baby!" :)

Latched on and couldn't put it down
By AJ Riley
If you have ever wondered:
why cans of formula come with a warning label that says breast is best
what's going on behind the scenes at the AAP, and what's the science behind their claims
why you had troubles supplying enough milk when 95% of moms can breastfeed with no issue
or the question posed in her introduction "Is breastfeeding really so superior that it justifies the guilt trip we heap on all of these women?"
...then this book is for you.

This was a fascinating read of everything that you DON'T hear about in the news or in your breastfeeding class. The author is in no way slamming breastfeeding and touts it as a perfect food, and does not in any way want to discourage breastfeeding. What she is doing is exposing the other side of the coin, the hidden side, the part that mothers, policymakers, or LCs wouldn't dare voice. The problems, the costs, the complications, and the science, but mostly focused on the human beings--the mothers who have to endure overwhelming societal pressure and what they have to say.

The book starts as historical journey, the author takes us down the series of events that led our nation and world to where it is today in terms of feeding wars. I would like to combine these chapters with the beginning of Lenore Skenazy's "Free Range Kids" into a book entitled "Why you are an anxiety-filled American parent in 2012". She then goes into some unexpected and eye-opening territory in a chapter on postpartum depression, coming to some innovative solutions to help women, of which I have dogeared the pages to show to my public health coworkers on Monday morning. There is also a thought-provoking chapter on whether new laws that protect women's right to pump are actually helping or hurting moms, and the mismatched relationship of breastfeeding and WIC, which reminded me of Ruby Payne's work on poverty and how the middle class sets the rules for the lower class who has their own completely different set of rules. She then takes an in depth look at how we got to the statistics that we so often hear about, all while coloring the chapters with personal stories of herself and her blog readers facing situations you would have never even thought about.

I work in the field of public health and have read a ton of studies and discourse on the subject and I was amazed by the new information presented in the book, and hope I will be able to put this new info to good use. This is a meticulously researched investigative look into all the things we know and thought we knew about infant feeding, with interviews from a wide range of experts brave enough to have been a public voice of reason.

Let me end with a note about the author: Suzanne Barston runs a popular and influential blog, the Fearless Formula Feeder, whose therapeutic value to new moms formula feeding in a breast-is-best world cannot possibly be overstated. There is an undercurrent among the readers that many of them have had miscarriages, fertility problems, and postpartum depression and then breastfeeding failures to boot. These are tough, strong women, who are able to share stories every Friday that most of them would never dare tell their closest friends. Indeed the book higlights one of these women who wrote of a sexual assault she endured that she had not and will not ever tell her husband about. In that sense, the FFF blog has become sort of an Ellis Island, beckoning all the tired masses, the wretched refuse of our snobbish shores, yearning to feed free of judgement, and Suzanne our own beautiful Lady Liberty, lifting her lamp and giving us the freedom to express our feelings in a safe environment with people who understand what it's like because they've been there, too. Most of these women have traveled long, heartbreaking roads and they are tired and they are sensitive and they need the support that this blog and it's community can give them. Suzanne is the voice of all these women, the one who dares to eloquently speak out when we just aren't able to do so ourselves. And her book is awesome.

Informative, enjoyable read on an important topic
By nightowl
This is a wonderful and much-needed book! I'm a certified nurse-midwife and family nurse-practitioner who assists women throughout their pregnancy/delivery/post-birth care and in many cases also the pediatric care of their infants, so this is a topic that I deal with on a day-to-day basis. In fact, I consider myself to be somewhat of an expert on breastfeeding! So please trust me when I tell you that this book is in no way "anti-breastfeeding." Far from it! I found Bottled Up to be well-researched, engaging, and thought-provoking. In it, the author shares her deeply personal experiences attempting to breastfeed, interweaving reflections on the breast-at-any-cost mentality that's developed among certain socioeconomic/cultural groups in the U.S. with an overview of/intro to the actual state of research on the benefits of breastfeeding. Until reading this book, I did not fully comprehend the pressure that some of my patients feel to "succeed" at breastfeeding. I've been aware that this pressure seems to have increased over time, but I really had not realized how intense things have gotten until reading this book. I can now make much better sense of numerous experiences with patients who have seemed utterly desperate to breastfeed and totally devastated at the challenges they've faced. In these cases, I've tried to be supportive, but I'm now realizing there's a lot more we can do here as health professionals!! As a nurse-midwife, I've always encouraged interested women to give breastfeeding a try and have been happy to provide assistance as needed. On the other hand, I've also always figured that formula is an excellent alternative for those who don't want to or can't breastfeed. Now, though, I'm realizing that this message--formula is a good option too!--may not be getting through to families who are bombarded with the "breast is best" message . . . I think many health professionals may not realize how some of the ways we talk about breastfeeding are overselling its benefits and putting undue pressure on women at a very vulnerable time in their lives. Yes, breast may be best for many women and babies, but for many others--e.g. women who can't produce enough breast milk, women whose histories of abuse, etc. are triggered by breastfeeding, and many many other cases--it is certainly not best at all! For other women--those who simply prefer not to breastfeed--the difference between "best" and "an excellent alternative" in their individual situations may be very slight indeed, and women need accurate information here to be able to make their own choices as to what is best overall for themselves and their families. I think most health professionals will not be at all surprised with the content of this book in terms of the actual research-proven benefits of breastfeeding, etc., but it may be a wake-up call for many regarding the disconnect between the medical knowledge base on this topic and popular perception. For the general public, it's a great overview of the topic. I'll be recommending this book to all of my midwife, nurse, physician and lactation consultant colleagues, as well as many of my patients. Thank you, Suzanne, for taking a very difficult, personal experience and turning it into this outstanding book to share with the world!

Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy, by Kevin Bales

Slavery is illegal throughout the world, yet more than twenty-seven million people are still trapped in one of history's oldest social institutions. Kevin Bales's disturbing story of slavery today reaches from brick kilns in Pakistan and brothels in Thailand to the offices of multinational corporations. His investigation of conditions in Mauritania, Brazil, Thailand, Pakistan, and India reveals the tragic emergence of a "new slavery," one intricately linked to the global economy. The new slaves are not a long-term investment as was true with older forms of slavery, explains Bales. Instead, they are cheap, require little care, and are disposable.

Three interrelated factors have helped create the new slavery. The enormous population explosion over the past three decades has flooded the world's labor markets with millions of impoverished, desperate people. The revolution of economic globalization and modernized agriculture has dispossessed poor farmers, making them and their families ready targets for enslavement. And rapid economic change in developing countries has bred corruption and violence, destroying social rules that might once have protected the most vulnerable individuals.

Bales's vivid case studies present actual slaves, slaveholders, and public officials in well-drawn historical, geographical, and cultural contexts. He observes the complex economic relationships of modern slavery and is aware that liberation is a bitter victory for a child prostitute or a bondaged miner if the result is starvation.

Bales offers suggestions for combating the new slavery and provides examples of very positive results from organizations such as Anti-Slavery International, the Pastoral Land Commission in Brazil, and the Human Rights Commission in Pakistan. He also calls for researchers to follow the flow of raw materials and products from slave to marketplace in order to effectively target campaigns of "naming and shaming" corporations linked to slavery. Disposable People is the first book to point the way to abolishing slavery in today's global economy.

All of the author's royalties from this book go to fund anti-slavery projects around the world.

From the Inside Flap
"Convincing, emotionally wrenching, and freighted with appropriate moral indignation, Kevin Bales's startling presentation shows us that while the general public is convinced slavery is a historical phenomenon of the ancient past . . . it is in actuality a widespread tragedy found worldwide and on a large scale. This book innovatively and usefully describes the permutations of an ancient tradition as it exists in this modern day and age."—Richard Pierre Claude, editor of Human Rights Quarterly

"A timely and fascinating book . . . of crucial importance. Few people realize that the increasing globalization of the economy has led to the use of coerced labor in many parts of the globe. . . . Bales has traveled widely and has gathered a great amount of shocking and disturbing information."—David Brion Davis, Director, Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery and Abolition, Yale University

"A well-researched, scholarly and deeply disturbing exposé of modern-day slavery with well-thought-out strategies for what to do to combat this scourge. None of us is allowed the luxury of imagined impotence. We can do something about it."—Desmond Tutu

"Ending Slavery takes the critical next step of providing a practical road-map for ending one of the worst human rights abuses of the modern era. Using a common sense approach, Bales offers a clear, economic rationale for why slavery is not as profitable or sustainable as fair labor practices. In addition, this book shows that the solutions for such severe suffering are not simply the purview of the social sector but are opportunities for transformation among policy makers and business people around the world. Bales shows how we can all play a role, and he inspires each of us to take action."—Pam Omidyar, Founder, Humanity United, Co-founder, Omidyar Network

This book is fascinating, well written, and informative. The author never whines when discussing horrible situations around the world; he simply presents what he has learned from his extensive research. Every issue that I would have wanted to ask the author about is addressed in the book. The book is interesting politically, economically and culturally. I highly recommend it.

Slavery is back. It probably never left.

This is a book that should be required reading in schools all over the world. It tells the truth about slavery in our time. There are young African girls being enslaved in major cities like Paris, half-starved and tortured. There are little children in India and Pakistan working unbearable jobs all day every day for no pay. There are the sex slaves working in Thailand, unable to escape, picked up by the corrupt police when they try, and beaten, raped, and returned to the brothel where they are beaten and raped some more. There are the slaves of Mauritania, Brazil, and on and on, each with their own story. Of course there are topics not covered in this book, like the kidnapping and forced prostitution of French, British and American girls in the Middle East and Japan. But this book will motivate you to join Anti-Slavery International and become a modern day abolitionist.

Slavery exists today on all continents.
By A Customer
This book documents slavery in just five countries, but more importantly it gives a face to victims of slavery. Slaves range is age from 3 years to the age of usefulness. Mr. Bales contrasts American slavery to the slavery of today's global economy. However, horrific and inexcusable American slavery was, in some ways today's slavery is worse. It is certainly far more prevalent than most of us would like to beleive. Mr. Bales gives fairly easy tips on how average people can help combat slavery. My hope is that so many people will read this book that our combined efforts will have a positive and real effect for millions of adults, children, and children yet unborn.

The Gothic Enterprise: A Guide to Understanding the Medieval Cathedral, by Robert A. Scott

The great Gothic cathedrals of Europe are among the most astonishing achievements of Western culture. Evoking feelings of awe and humility, they make us want to understand what inspired the people who had the audacity to build them. This engrossing book surveys an era that has fired the historical imagination for centuries. In it Robert A. Scott explores why medieval people built Gothic cathedrals, how they built them, what conception of the divine lay behind their creation, and how religious and secular leaders used cathedrals for social and political purposes. As a traveler’s companion or a rich source of knowledge for the armchair enthusiast, The Gothic Enterprise helps us understand how ordinary people managed such tremendous feats of physical and creative energy at a time when technology was rudimentary, famine and disease were rampant, the climate was often harsh, and communal life was unstable and incessantly violent.

While most books about Gothic cathedrals focus on a particular building or on the cathedrals of a specific region, The Gothic Enterprise considers the idea of the cathedral as a humanly created space. Scott discusses why an impoverished people would commit so many social and personal resources to building something so physically stupendous and what this says about their ideas of the sacred, especially the vital role they ascribed to the divine as a protector against the dangers of everyday life.

Scott’s narrative offers a wealth of fascinating details concerning daily life during medieval times. The author describes the difficulties master-builders faced in scheduling construction that wouldn’t be completed during their own lifetimes, how they managed without adequate numeric systems or paper on which to make detailed drawings, and how climate, natural disasters, wars, variations in the hours of daylight throughout the year, and the celebration of holy days affected the pace and timing of work. Scott also explains such things as the role of relics, the quarrying and transporting of stone, and the incessant conflict cathedral-building projects caused within their communities. Finally, by drawing comparisons between Gothic cathedrals and other monumental building projects, such as Stonehenge, Scott expands our understanding of the human impulses that shape our landscape.

Review
"Offers an intriguing study of the historical creation of the medieval cathedral in Europe. . . . provides a fresh eye and an engaging entree to how and why, for a 300-year period, Europeans created these lasting monuments. . . . Recommended particularly for public libraries with an interest in art and architecture."--"Library Journal

From the Inside Flap
"This is easily the best book I have seen on why the great cathedrals were built. The breadth of Scott’s scholarship is astonishing. As well as art history and architecture, he brings to bear his knowledge of subjects as wide apart as engineering, the sociology of religion, and the medieval economy. Only a handful of books truly throw light on the mystery of the cathedrals, and this is one of them."—Ken Follett, author of Pillars of the Earth

"Written in a lucid style and illustrated by dozens of sketches and photographs, this interdisciplinary survey is the best introduction to its subject now in print."—Gene Brucker, author of Florence: The Golden Age, 1138–1737

"Scott has given us a book of wonderful breadth and erudition with a refreshingly light touch. He describes vividly the social, political, and religious background to the great flowering of the Gothic cathedrals of Europe in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and the strange mixture of motives that drove this astonishing building program. He is equally interested in the hard practical mechanics of hewing timber, erecting scaffolding, quarrying stone, transporting and hauling these materials as he is in the religious and liturgical symbolisms and conceptual schemes of the architects and their royal paymasters. Gothic cathedrals are astounding monuments to the aspirations of the human spirit reaching out to the divine, and this is a splendid introduction to the medieval worlds that produced them, written by an enthusiastic guide who really knows his subject and loves it."—Hugh Dickinson, Dean Emeritus of Salisbury Cathedral

"Gothic architecture is notoriously difficult to represent verbally, but in Scott’s book the joy so many people find in discovering these breathtakingly beautiful monuments is palpable."—Stephen Murray, author of Notre Dame, Cathedral of Amiens: The Power of Change in Gothic

"In this splendid book Scott writes precisely, clearly, and with a love for both words and his readers. Those who read these pages will come away enlightened, inspired, and with a more profound grasp of our civilization."—Neil J. Smelser, University Professor of Sociology, Emeritus, University of California, Berkeley

Grand undertaking
By FrKurt Messick
Author Robert Scott had much the same the experience at Salisbury Cathedral as I had - a sense of awe and wonder, and a desire to learn more about it, not just as a place, or as an architectural wonder, or as a place of worship, or as a cultural icon. Scott wanted to get at the heart of the idea of the Gothic enterprise as a whole - a trained sociologist, Scott knew that the bigger picture is sometimes lost by too narrow a focus on particular details to the exclusion of others. The sociology background also gave Scott a sense of wanting to understand the hearts and minds of the people involved.

While the principal focus of Scott's travels started with Salisbury Cathedral (in full, the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Salisbury), Scott draws examples from the breadth of the Gothic cathedrals, churches and other buildings. There are literally thousands of such dotted across the European and European-influenced landscapes. Each building has its own unique characteristics, but they share a common spirit.

Church building in particular was 'big business' in Christendom for a long time. Scott quotes estimates of that there are nearly 19,000 ecclesiastical buildings in England and Wales, nearly half of which date to the medieval period. The first Gothic church was the Abbey Church of St. Denis, just north of Paris, built under the direction of the 'founding father' of Gothic style, Abbot Suger.

Scott's first major section looks at how cathedrals were built, in terms of materials, architectural design, settings, and workforce. With regard to the workforce, the numbers were large and the division of labour highly specialised. In the records of the construction of Westminster Abbey, there were fifteen different categories of workers listed in 1253. Workers were often local, but supplemented by those who traveled, particularly if special skills were needed. Construction was often suspended in winter months, not just because of the cold, but because the number of daylight hours greatly diminished (in England, there can be fewer than 8 hours of daylight in the winter months).

Scott's second major section explores the history involved. The Gothic enterprise grew up out of the feudal system as it was trying to define itself in a sea of shifting political structures. It is no mistake that the Gothic ideal was born in an Abbey rather than a Cathedral; bishops had become increasingly involved in secular and political matters, while the monasteries remained closer to the common people and closer to the spiritual ideals of the church. 'Monasticism was a continuous effort to surmount sense perception and intellectual understanding to achieve knowledge of God, to experience communion with God, and by so doing to reveal the divine mystery and achieve special favour in the eyes of God.' Still, the particular abbey of Gothic's foundation, the Abbey of St. Denis, had a particular attachment to the French monarchs, and for a time the Abbey enjoyed a supreme reputation, 'from 1124 onward the Abbey Church of St. Denis became the religious and, in an important sense, the political capital of France.' From this place, the influence of Gothic style spread through the Paris region, then outward into France and beyond.

In the third section, Scott highlights some of the classic details of what the Gothic look entails. There is a geometric symmetry involved, which, 'when followed consistently, gives Gothic cathedrals their characteristic organic unity.' There is a logic and harmony built into the design. High vaulted ceilings, flying buttresses, pointed arches are other features. However, the key element in Gothic design is light, and it is in aid of this aspect that the other elements are enlisted. Gothic cathedrals in comparison with the dimly lit Romanesque predecessors are flooded with light. Be it clear or stained glass, the incorporation of windows and lighting techniques hitherto not done makes the Gothic space a brighter surrounding. Heaven would be a place of light, and the Gothic cathedral is intended as a foretaste of the heavenly banquet.

The fourth section explores the religious experience in Gothic structures, and how liturgies and worship are carried out, how they serve as temples of the imagination in addition to being the centre of worship, and how they become a repository of history. Part of this history was the incorporation of the memory and power of the dead into the fabric of the cathedrals - many became pilgrimage sites or burial sites; royal and other notable society figures also became part of the structures of cathedrals and churches. According to Scott, the cathedrals provided the saints with a focal point of veneration, and the saints in return provided a steady income (from the pilgrims) for the buildings to be completed.

The final section looks at the community that surrounded the Gothic enterprise, be they parish churches, abbey churches or cathedrals. Scott explores the living standards of the time, the stratification and specialisation of people in the different roles in society, and the questions not only of how the communities built the churches, but how the churches and cathedrals in turn built the communities. 'We might ...imagine that the long time required to build Gothic cathedrals added to the depth of the collective identity they engendered.' Indeed, in some regards, the building of a cathedral was never supposed to be completed. Spanning generations (sometimes, as in the case of Canterbury Cathedral, nearly 400 years) such enterprises defined the community in ways that no building project in modern times could approach.

Scott ends with a small essay regarding Stonehenge, not too far from Salisbury Cathedral, showing some similarities and differences in the way people built and found identity then.

Scott quotes Samuel Johnson as declaring Salisbury Cathedral 'the last perfection in architecture'; however, it is clear that there is much perfection to go around when it comes to all things Gothic. Scott's passion for the material and love of discovery is apparent on every page. A good writer, he serves as teacher, tour guide, and co-discoverer of ideas with the reader. This is a wonderful book.

Great for both new and experienced enthusiasts
By A Customer
This book is both a wondrous introduction to Gothic Cathedrals for those who are newly curious about them and a concise but thorough resource for those who have long admired and read about the Gothic Cathedral. The author often takes a personal approach in his narrative, which seems quite appropriate given the personal impression these buildings were designed to make (and have made on most who will read this book). The book is both well-researched and easy to read, a difficult achievement. Its description of the elements of Gothic architecture, for example, is one of the most complete and clear treatments I have read.
The broad perspective taken (historical, intellectual, religious, architectural, sociological) helps bring together into one coherent whole the many different faces of the cathedral. Even those who may know the historical and intellectual origins of the cathedral will learn much about its other aspects here. For example, some of the details on construction techniques and parts of the discussion of "sacred spaces" within the cathedral were new even to someone who has read many books on the subject.
Medieval intellectual history and its relationship to the cathedrals is explored, and the coexistence of the potentially conflicting reason and faith in a single building is explained. Some discussion of how the cathedrals and their attached schools gave rise to the medieval (and hence the modern) university would have been helpful.
Overall, though, the book provides an excellent introduction to the topic and a comprehensive explanation of the "why" and "how" of Gothic Cathedrals (in addition to the more mundane, but still important, "who", "when", and "where").
Before this book, one would have to read many volumes to get such a complete picture of the Gothic Cathedral. This book is appropriate for anyone with an interest in the subject. It is the book that I'm sure many Gothic Cathedral enthusiasts wish they had written.

Not devoid of shortcomings !
By Pierre Gauthier
This work is largely successful at describing and explaining the historical and sociological context pertaining to the construction of gothic cathedrals.

Some important shortcomings should however be pointed out.

First, the title is misleading since the book is very much centered on England, and specifically on Salisbury, whereas gothic cathedrals blossomed first and foremost on the Continent. 'The Gothic Enterprise in England' would have been more appropriate.

Also, the author carries the strange notion that 12th and 13th century societies were poor and wretched whereas the very cathedrals discussed are proof to the contrary. He clearly is not familiar with Régine Pernoud's work, initially published in the 1970's, that debunks many myths concerning the Middle Ages!

One of the book's most fascinating chapters, placed at the very end, deals with Stonehenge. Why however include it in this work since there is no indication that Stonehenge had any influence whatsoever on gothic construction?

Finally, the black and white photographs, possibly shot by the author, are sadly not up to par with the topic.

"This is a readable and useful book . . . an extended essay on one particular method, which is easy to understand, easy to apply, and generally useful. The method itself is implemented in a computer technique. . . . This method will systematize the analysis and produce an elegant statement of the combination of conditions which lead to a divided working class--provided there are no contradictions in the data. Where there are contradictions, Ragin's method will identify these combinations of conditions that lead to an ambiguous result."--William Miller, "Study of Public Policy

methodology classic
By suburban dissident
Ragin's classic on comparative analysis is a must for any sociologist or social scientist more generally. Raing spends his early chapters discussing some problems of current (at the time) methodologies: too unlike reality, too focused on independent effects of variables, not configurational enough. Then, Ragin presents his argument for getting beyond the qualitative/quantitative divide by introducing a different method of mathematical analysis of comparative data: Boolean Algebra. By coding for the presence or absence of certain factors, Boolean Algebra allows for the assessment of collections of variables (like interaction terms, only more complex) and seemingly brings together mathematical precision and qualitative depth.

While there are certainly some problems with the book (what on earth are the cases we are considering and how does one select them? How do we determine what are salient "variables" to include in the "truth tables"? etc.), it remains a classic of methodology and the corner stone of the methods that Ragin continues to develop (QCA, Fuzzy Sets, etc.). This is a must for most social scientists. Otherwise, it will make for dry reading.

Convincing but poorly developed
By svobodan
As a PhD candidate, I heard about 'the Comparative Method' a while ago when I studied methodology. I thought I'd give 'the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA)' a try. I have not yet gotten to later books developed by Ragin, where elaborates on QCA and 'the fuzzy sets' . Thus, this review judges this book by itself.
Has it convinced me that 'the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) is important? It certainly seems so. He spends the first half of the book, as well as the last chapter, defending the QCA method, which is supposed to take strengths from both the qualitative and quantitative methods. That is, while variable-oriented approach is limited by simplified conceptions of cause, the case-oriented approach is limited by its inability to address large numbers of cases. The QCA is supposed to be the middle-road between the two extremes. It is supposed to allow investigators both to digest many cases and to asses causal complexity (p.168).
Convinced? I certainly found that Ragin's desire to bridge the qualitative and quantitative approaches was valid. He develops good arguments from Chapter 1 to 5 why the current approaches are inadequate, including combined strategies (which use both qualitative and quantitative methods simultaneously).

The evaluation of the QCA is that it holds a lot of promise. Chapter 6 develops basic concepts that help you understand the Boolean algebra, which Ragin exemplifies with simple data. The problem comes with Chapters 7 and 8, which are respectively supposed to describe 'extensions of boolean methods' and 'show real-life examples'. In practice, Ragin rushes through these chapters, throws us into the water, without teaching us how to swim properly. What do I mean? With table 8 onwards, he begins addressing procedures of complex examples. However, he skips many steps, making it untraceable how he develops resulting formulas. If you follow the steps from Chapter 6, you will see that you are encountering a complex situation which was not addressed earlier. Instead of explaining all the steps or a complex example, Ragin simply jumps from the beginning to the "final result". Consider, on p.119, where he throws this formula:
(T)(R') = (B + aCd) (AB + CD)
= AB + BCD

As a matter of fact, tracing steps outlined in Chapter 6, should lead us to this equation AB + BC +aC, not AB + BCD (verified by two other people).
So what is going on? You never find out, because Ragin never addresses the rules of his method in the complex examples. This is sign of a poorly developed methodological structure - whereby the reader cannot follow all the steps. The argument he makes is that the book is too small to describe details. However, he spends a lot of time re-addressing issues with other approaches, as well as showing similar examples, without even once addressing how he works with complex formulas. This is a major weakness which makes this book a poor guide to QCA.

That said, the book has its own uses. For very simple examples, this is a good introduction to the QCA. It will enable you to understand the goals of QCA, its strengths and weaknesses. However, for exact procedures, you will have to rely on Ragin's latter publications.

Highly recommended for public health research
By utstrucken
This is what I used to do my dissertation and I highly recommend this to researchers using qualitative methods; more public health researchers should try QCA.

The Activist's Handbook: Winning Social Change in the 21st Century, by Randy Shaw

In this thoroughly revised and updated edition of The Activist's Handbook, Randy Shaw’s hard-hitting guide to winning social change, the author brings the strategic and tactical guidance of the prior edition into the age of Obama. Shaw details how activists can best use the Internet and social media, and analyzes the strategic strengths and weaknesses of rising 21st century movements for immigrant rights, marriage equality, and against climate change. Shaw also highlights increased student activism towards fostering greater social justice in the 21st century.

The Activist's Handbook: Winning Social Change in the 21st Century details the impact of specific strategies on campaigns across the country, from Occupy Wall Street to battles over sweatshops, the environment, AIDS policies, education reform, homelessness, and more: How should activists use new media tools to expose issues and mobilize grassroots support? When should activists form coalitions, and with whom? How are students—be they DREAMers seeking immigration reform or college activists battling ever-increasing tuition costs—winning major campaigns? Whether it’s by inspiring "fear and loathing" in politicians, building diverse coalitions, using ballot initiatives, or harnessing the media, the courts, and the electoral process towards social change, Shaw—a longtime activist for urban issues—shows that with a plan, positive change can be achieved.

In showing how people can win social change struggles against even overwhelming odds, The Activist's Handbook is an indispensable guide not only for activists, but for anyone interested in the future of progressive politics in America.

From the Inside Flap
“A must read for grassroots activists, Shaw offers indispensable insights into the strategies and tactics necessary to overcome powerful interests. This new edition significantly expands and updates the original, which is an organizing classic.”—Van Jones, author of Rebuild the Dream

Praise for Previous Edition:

"Anybody researching or writing anything about contemporary U.S. political life should be familiar with The Activist's Handbook. Anybody attempting to influence local, state, or national political decisions needs it desperately. Politicians may read it and tremble a bit. For that matter, the rich and powerful will probably read it to see how smart some of their enemies are becoming."—Ernest Callenbach, author of Ecotopia

"Provides rare insight into the strategies and tactics environmentalists must use if they are to succeed in today's political climate. A must read."—Barbara Dudley, Executive Director, Greenpeace

"This is a unique book, wise, realistic, and enormously valuable for anyone interested in social change. It is practical in its advice, and inspiring in its stories of ordinary people successfully confronting powerful interests."—Howard Zinn, author of A People's History of the United States

"The Activist's Handbook could not have come at a more opportune time. In an era when poverty is growing and national social programs are threatened, the Handbook is an invaluable tool for community groups wishing to mobilize efforts in the service of escalating human needs."—Ben Bagdikian, author of The Media Monopoly and Double Vision

"Randy Shaw gives us a serious and respectful treatment of the strategic problems and opportunities that confront grassroots activists. This is a dimension of contemporary politics that is rarely treated, and welcome for that reason. Moreover, in developing his analysis, Shaw draws on numerous cases of local struggles to remind us of what the media has come to ignore, the persistent and insuppressible popular activism that is part of American political life."—Frances Fox Piven, City University of New York

About the Author
Randy Shaw is Director of San Francisco’s Tenderloin Housing Clinic and Editor of BeyondChron.org. His previous books include The Activist’s Handbook: A Primer, Reclaiming America, and Beyond the Fields: Cesar Chavez, the UFW and the Struggle for Justice in the 21st Century, all from UC Press.

Considered by many critics to be Neruda's best poetry. A huge epic poem of Central and South America, somewhat uneven in execution when Neruda comments and damns his political opponents, but superb when he gives sweeping descriptions and narratives of ordinary workers, the magnificent environments of Central and South America and fascinating glimpses into the history of the continent and those, Indian, Spanish and Portuguese, who shaped it.
