Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race, and Family Life, 2nd Edition with an Update a Decade Later, by Annette Lareau

Class does make a difference in the lives and futures of American children. Drawing on in-depth observations of black and white middle-class, working-class, and poor families, Unequal Childhoods explores this fact, offering a picture of childhood today. Here are the frenetic families managing their children's hectic schedules of "leisure" activities; and here are families with plenty of time but little economic security. Lareau shows how middle-class parents, whether black or white, engage in a process of "concerted cultivation" designed to draw out children's talents and skills, while working-class and poor families rely on "the accomplishment of natural growth," in which a child's development unfolds spontaneously—as long as basic comfort, food, and shelter are provided. Each of these approaches to childrearing brings its own benefits and its own drawbacks. In identifying and analyzing differences between the two, Lareau demonstrates the power, and limits, of social class in shaping the lives of America's children.

The first edition of Unequal Childhoods was an instant classic, portraying in riveting detail the unexpected ways in which social class influences parenting in white and African American families. A decade later, Annette Lareau has revisited the same families and interviewed the original subjects to examine the impact of social class in the transition to adulthood.

Review
"A fascinating study." ---Malcolm Gladwell

From the Inside Flap
“So where does something like practical intelligence come from?...Perhaps the best explanation we have of this process comes from the sociologist Annette Lareau, who...conducted a fascinating study of a group of third graders. You might expect that if you spent such an extended period in twelve different households, what you would gather is twelve different ideas about how to raise children...What Lareau found, however, is something much different.” —Malcolm Gladwell, Outliers: The Story of Success

"Less than one in five Americans think 'race, gender, religion or social class are very important for getting ahead in life,' Annette Lareau tells us in her carefully researched and clearly written new book. But as she brilliantly shows, everything from looking authority figures in the eye when you shake their hands to spending long periods in a shared space and squabbling with siblings is related to social class. This is one of the most penetrating works I have read on a topic that only grows in importance as the class gap in America widens."—Arlie Russell Hochschild, author of The Time Bind and The Commercialization of Intimate Life

"This is a great book, not only because of its powerful portrayal of class inequalities in the United States and its insightful analysis of the processes through which inequality is reproduced, but also because of its frank engagement with methodological and analytic dilemmas usually glossed over in academic texts. Hardly any other studies have the rich, intensive ethnographic focus on family of Unequal Childhoods." —Diane Reay, American Journal of Sociology

"Lareau does sociology and lay readers alike an important service in her engaging book, Unequal Childhoods, by showing us exactly what kinds of knowledge, upbringing, skills, and bureaucratic savvy are involved in this idea, and how powerfully inequality in this realm perpetuates economic inequality. Through textured and intimate observation, Lareau takes us into separate worlds of pampered but overextended, middle-class families and materially stressed, but relatively relaxed, working-class and poor families to show how inequality is passed on across generations." —Katherine Newman, Contexts

"Sociology at its best. In this major study, Lareau provides the tools to make sense of the frenzied middle-class obsession with their offspring's extracurricular activities; the similarities between black and white professionals; and the paths on which poor and working class kids are put by their circumstances. This book will help generations of students understand that organized soccer and pick-up basketball have everything to do with the inequality of life chances."—Michele Lamont, author of The Dignity of Working Men: Morality and the Boundaries of Race, Class, and Immigration

"Drawing upon remarkably detailed case studies of parents and children going about their daily lives, Lareau argues that middle-class and working-class families operate with different logics of childrearing, which both reflect and contribute to the transmission of inequality. An important and provocative book."—Barrie Thorne, author of Gender Play: Girls and Boys in School

"With rich storytelling and insightful detail, Lareau takes us inside the family lives of poor, middle-class, and affluent Americans and reminds us that class matters. Unequal Childhoods thoughtfully demonstrates that class differences in cultural resources, played out in the daily routines of parenting, can have a powerful impact on children's chances for climbing the class ladder and achieving the American dream. This provocative and often disturbing book will shape debates on the U.S. class system for decades to come."—Sharon Hays, author of Flat Broke with Children

"Drawing on intimate knowledge of kids and families studied at school and at home, Lareau examines the social changes that have turned childhood into an extended production process for many middle-class American families. Her depiction of this new world of childhood--and her comparison of the middle-class ideal of systematic cultivation to the more naturalistic approach to child development to which many working-class parents still adhere--maps a critically important dimension of American family life and raises challenging questions for parents and policy makers."—Paul DiMaggio, Professor of Sociology, Princeton University

"Annette Lareau has written another classic. Her deep insights about the social stratification of family life and childrearing have profound implications for understanding inequality -- and for understanding the daily struggles of everyone attempting to raise children in America. Lareau's findings have great force because they are thoroughly grounded in compelling ethnographic evidence."—Adam Gamoran, Professor of Sociology and Educational Policy Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

"With the poignant details of daily life assembled in a rigorous comparative design, Annette Lareau has produced a highly ambitious ethnographic study that reveals how social class makes a difference in children's lives. Unequal Childhoods will be read alongside Sewell and Hauser, Melvin Kohn, and Bourdieu. It is an important step forward in the study of social stratification and family life, and a valuable exemplar for comparative ethnographic work."—Mitchell Duneier, author of Sidewalk and Slim's Table

A Must-Read for Parents and Educators
By H. Wise
I've assigned Lareau's original work for several years in a lower-level Race, Class and Gender Sociology course taught for elementary education majors. This is THE book students remember from the course and the one that provides them with the perspective they need to deal with educational issues connected to social class. I highly recommend this second edition as it addresses the ultimate question of what happened to the children and how their life chances varied according to social standing. Excellent read for anyone interested in parental involvement, student achievement, and the mechanisms which we use to navigate the social institution of education with varying degrees of success.

A fabulous update to the original gem
By C. Slocum
Annette Lareau updates her 2006 book with extra chapters that follow her subjects into adulthood and describe methodological strengths and issues. The core of the book is the same, and retains its finding. The last few chapters explore late teens for the students. The findings that concerted cultivation exists in the middle class continue through the college application process, with middle class teens receiving help from family and working class teens trying to get help from schools and other institutions. Chapter 14 is a rare and very honest glimpse into how research subjects feel about the research being done about them. Long story short: most do not like it. Dr. Lareau includes quotes and letters describing this, which should serve as a point-to think for student ethnographers. Chapter 15 mathematically models class and time use data from the PSID.

Often second edition of books are different from the first edition in very minor ways. That is not true of this edition. I highly recommend it.

Unequal opportunities means inherited inequality
By Paul Froehlich
Most Americans see individual effort as the key to success, with fewer than one in five seeing class or race as very important in getting ahead in life. The reality is that social class is a more important determinant of a person's success in life than it used to be due to two powerful trends: Growing economic inequality that has created a wider gulf between rich and poor, and less mobility between classes. The fact is the USA has both less social mobility and wider economic inequality than any of the other rich democracies in Canada, Australia, Japan and western Europe.

With more sluggish mobility than in the past, class has become more hereditary than it once was. The gap in spending per child is growing between rich and poor Americans, from 5 to 1 in 1972 to 9 to 1 in 2007. Just 17 percent of kids raised in the bottom fifth of the income distribution will make it to the top two-fifths by age 40.

It's no wonder then that class differences are so powerful in shaping a child's life experience, more important in child raising than racial differences, according to Annette Lareau, a sociology professor at the University of Pennsylvania, who won awards for the first edition of this book in 2002.

Lareau's research reveals the basic class differences in approach to raising children. Middle-class parents have their children in organized activities and engage in a process of "concerted cultivation." By contrast, working-class and poor parents don't engage their children in concerted cultivation, instead allowing development through "natural growth."

Poor parents face economic challenges just putting food on the table and getting medical care. They lack the resources and energy to put their kids in as many organized activities. Children are left with more unstructured time, which is spent in front of a TV or playing with child relatives and friends, with much less direct adult supervision than in the middle-class organized activities.

Most of the book is devoted to in-depth studies of individual middle-class and working class students. Those studies reveal differences in how parents nurture their children and why middle-class children learn skills essential for later success that their poorer counterparts don't learn.

Middle-class mothers, for example, tend to be interventionist at school or other institutional settings, intervening in situations. "By teaching their children how to get organizations to meet their individualized needs, middle-class mothers pass along skills that have the potential to be extremely valuable to their children in adulthood. These are class-based advantages." Middle-class parents tend to have a better understanding of how institutions work and therefore of how to effectively influence them.

Working class mothers tend to be more passive and deferential when it comes to school. They tend to be more respectful of educators' professional expertise than are their middle-class counterparts. These parents feel they lack the vocabulary to deal assertively with educational and medical professionals.

Lareau did a follow up a decade later with the children in her study (who were ten at the time of the original study) and again 15 years later. She found that social class continued to matter in their lives, affecting how much education they obtained and their options in the world of work. As the children in the study matured, income inequality widened, with all but one of the middle-class subjects becoming professionals, compared to none of the working-class and poor subjects.

Though all of the parents in the study loved their children and wanted the best for them, the fact is that none of the working-class/poor subjects achieved a college degree. By age 10, the die was cast, making it likely that children would end up in situations similar to those of their parents. "It is not impossible for individuals to significantly change their life position, but it is not common."

Lareau concludes that class-related differences in child rearing lead to the "transmission of differential advantages to children." Those differential advantages belie the common American belief that there is equal opportunity for those with hard work and talent to succeed, and that our success or lack thereof is an individual responsibility. It's tempting for those who aren't poor to blame those who are for their plight. Looking at inequality from a class perspective, however, aids understanding about how inequality is inherited. Americans tend to downplay or not notice class-based advantages they receive.

Our meritocratic culture implies a competition with fair play and deserved outcomes. The working class works hard, but opportunities for advancement are nonetheless limited. The system is not neutral or fair: it does not give all children equal opportunities. "The life paths we pursue are neither equal nor freely chosen."

The transmission of privilege, however, is `misrecognized." Individuals tend to see social class as earned. In other words, status and privilege are perceived as earned by talent, intelligence and effort. Lareau and other sociologists see that social position is not the result of personal attributes such as effort or intelligence, but more the result of socialization that transmits social skills, social networks, and resources.

"The social position of one's family or origin has profound implications for life experiences and life outcomes. But the inequality our system creates and sustains is invisible and thus unrecognized. We would be a better country if we could enlarge our truncated vocabulary about the importance of social class, for only then might we acknowledge the class divisions among us." ###

Racial Propositions: Ballot Initiatives and the Making of Postwar California (American Crossroads), by Daniel Martinez HoSang

This book looks beyond the headlines to uncover the controversial history of California's ballot measures over the past fifty years. As the rest of the U.S. watched, California voters banned public services for undocumented immigrants, repealed public affirmative action programs, and outlawed bilingual education, among other measures. Why did a state with a liberal political culture, an increasingly diverse populace, and a well-organized civil rights leadership roll back civil rights and anti-discrimination gains? Daniel Martinez HoSang finds that, contrary to popular perception, this phenomenon does not represent a new wave of "color-blind" policies, nor is a triumph of racial conservatism. Instead, in a book that goes beyond the conservative-liberal divide, HoSang uncovers surprising connections between the right and left that reveal how racial inequality has endured. Arguing that each of these measures was a proposition about the meaning of race and racism, his deft, convincing analysis ultimately recasts our understanding of the production of racial identity, inequality, and power in the postwar era.

From the Inside Flap
"With narrative fluency and deftness, constructed on a bedrock of prodigious archival research, HoSang's book provides a sorely needed genealogy of the 'color-blind consensus' that has come to define race and recode racism within US politics, law and public policy. This will be a book that lasts."—Nikhil Pal Singh, author of Black is a Country: Race and the Unfinished Struggle for Democracy

"An important analysis of both the exact contours of white supremacy and the failures of electoral anti-racism."—George Lipsitz, author of The Possessive Investment in Whiteness

"Racial Propositions brilliantly documents the history of race in California's post-World War II ballot initiatives to show that nothing is what it seems when it comes to race and politics in America's ethnoracial frontier. Daniel HoSang provides readers with a sharply focused interdisciplinary lens though which to see how the language and politics of political liberalism veil what are ultimately racialized ballot initiatives. If California is a harbinger for the rest of the country, then HoSang's tour de force is required reading for anyone interested how the United States will negotiate diversity in the 21st century."—Tomás R. Jiménez, author of Replenished Ethnicity: Mexican Americans, Immigration, and Identity

Lizards in an Evolutionary Tree: Ecology and Adaptive Radiation of Anoles (Organisms and Environments), by Jonathan B. Losos

Adaptive radiation, which results when a single ancestral species gives rise to many descendants, each adapted to a different part of the environment, is possibly the single most important source of biological diversity in the living world. One of the best-studied examples involves Caribbean Anolis lizards. With about 400 species, Anolis has played an important role in the development of ecological theory and has become a model system exemplifying the integration of ecological, evolutionary, and behavioral studies to understand evolutionary diversification. This major work, written by one of the best-known investigators of Anolis, reviews and synthesizes an immense literature. Jonathan B. Losos illustrates how different scientific approaches to the questions of adaptation and diversification can be integrated and examines evolutionary and ecological questions of interest to a broad range of biologists.

From the Inside Flap
"In a book both beautifully illustrated and deeply informative, Jonathan Losos, a leader in evolutionary ecology, celebrates and analyzes the diversity of the natural world that the fascinating anoline lizards epitomize. Readers who are drawn to nature by its beauty or its intellectual challenges—or both—will find his book rewarding."—Douglas J. Futuyma, State University of New York, Stony Brook

"This book is destined to become a classic. It is scholarly, informative, stimulating, and highly readable, and will inspire a generation of students."—Peter R. Grant, author of How and Why Species Multiply: The Radiation of Darwin's Finches

"Anoline lizards experienced a spectacular adaptive radiation in the dynamic landscape of the Caribbean islands. The radiation has extended over a long period of time and has featured separate radiations on the larger islands. Losos, the leading active student of these lizards, presents an integrated and synthetic overview, summarizing the enormous and multidimensional research literature. This engaging book makes a wonderful example of an adaptive radiation accessible to all, and the lavish illustrations, especially the photographs, make the anoles come alive in one's mind."—David Wake, University of California, Berkeley

"This magnificent book is a celebration and synthesis of one of the most eventful adaptive radiations known. With disarming prose and personal narrative Jonathan Losos shows how an obsession, beginning at age ten, became a methodology and a research plan that, together with studies by colleagues and predecessors, culminated in many of the principles we now regard as true about the origins and maintenance of biodiversity. This work combines rigorous analysis and glorious natural history in a unique volume that stands with books by the Grants on Darwin's finches among the most informed and engaging accounts ever written on the evolution of a group of organisms in nature."—Dolph Schluter, author of The Ecology of Adaptive Radiation

Among Murderers: Life after Prison, by Sabine Heinlein

What is it like for a convicted murderer who has spent decades behind bars to suddenly find himself released into a world he barely recognizes? What is it like to start over from nothing? To answer these questions Sabine Heinlein followed the everyday lives and emotional struggles of Angel Ramos and his friends Bruce and Adam—three men convicted of some of society’s most heinous crimes—as they return to the free world.

Heinlein spent more than two years at the Castle, a prominent halfway house in West Harlem, shadowing her protagonists as they painstakingly learn how to master their freedom. Having lived most of their lives behind bars, the men struggle to cross the street, choose a dish at a restaurant, and withdraw money from an ATM. Her empathetic first-person narrative gives a visceral sense of the men’s inner lives and of the institutions they encounter on their odyssey to redemption. Heinlein follows the men as they navigate the subway, visit the barber shop, venture on stage, celebrate Halloween, and loop through the maze of New York’s reentry programs. She asks what constitutes successful rehabilitation and how one faces the guilt and shame of having taken someone’s life.

With more than 700,000 people being released from prisons each year to a society largely unprepared—and unwilling—to receive them, this book provides an incomparable perspective on a pressing public policy issue. It offers a poignant view into a rarely seen social setting and into the hearts and minds of three unforgettable individuals who struggle with some of life’s harshest challenges.

From the Inside Flap
“Among Murderers is a remarkable achievement, an eye-opening work of journalistic empathy in the best tradition of Katherine Boo, Ted Conover, and Adrian Nicole LeBlanc. In studying the cases of these three just-released convicts, Sabine Heinlein raises significant policy and philosophical questions about crime and punishment and the nature of "rehabilitation." This is a triumphantly humane work of reporting and storytelling.”—Scott Stossel, editor at The Atlantic and author of the award-winning Sarge: The Life and Times of Sargent Shriver.

"With this unsentimental yet deeply empathetic look at the lives of ex-cons struggling to make it on the outside, Sabine Heinlein establishes herself as the Orwell of rehabilitation, American-style."—David Samuels, contributing editor at Harper's Magazine and contributor to The Atlantic and The New Yorker.

“Sabine Heinlein's Among Murderers is a remarkable, clear-eyed portrait of three men trying to create lives for themselves after serving decades of hard time as punishment for having committed the ultimate crime. Working in the journalistic tradition of Joseph Mitchell and A.J. Liebling, Heinlein brings these men to life as fully-realized, fascinating if flawed characters. Heinlein's readers won't be able to think of crime or punishment in the same way.”—Robert S. Boynton, author of The New New Journalism

“Among Murderers joins a small but important group of literary books that take an intimate look at murderers. Detailing individuals’ painful steps and difficult quotidian lives as they try to find a place on the outside and come to terms with their crimes, this book has much to tell us about crime and punishment in America today.”—Sam Swope, Dean of the New York Public Library's Cullman Center Institute for Teachers

Empathetic and thought-provoking
By leslie
I don't often write reviews, but I felt compelled to after finishing Among Murderers because of the exceptional honesty and openness exhibited by both the author and the protagonists. By participating in the daily lives of three men--recently released from prison after serving decades for murder--the author humanizes the abstract and complex impact of society and the criminal justice system on these individuals before, during, and after their crimes.

I knew next to nothing about these topics, and was drawn to the book because of its unique point of view--I was truly impressed by the author's ability to contextualize the rich personal experiences of these three men with scholarly information about the penal system in general. This delicate balance allowed the men's voices to remain the focus of the book, while providing a journey that was as emotional as it was vastly informative and thought-provoking.

The book's impressive journalistic integrity and the compelling stories these men allow us to hear make it an unexpectedly poignant, brave reminder of the myriad factors that can impact individual experience, and I highly recommend this book to anyone.

Rough Justice
By Mark Dery
Rough justice, brutal truth: Sabine Heinlein's AMONG MURDERERS puts a human face on the prison-industrial complex. In the tradition of Adrian Nicole LeBlanc's RANDOM FAMILY, this fastidiously reported, in-the-trenches hybrid of narrative nonfiction and investigative reporting looks at the costs, personal and social, of mass incarceration in the country that cages more of its citizens than any other nation on Earth (yes, including North Korea). Obama's silence on this subject, especially in light of incarceration's disproportionate effects on black men and the poor, is simply criminal, a moral obscenity. Impeccably researched and emotionally shattering, Heinlein's book is an indictment of our criminal justice system.

Education Is Critical
By Lori Salmon
I finished reading 'Among Murders' this weekend. It was a thoughtful point of view on individuals that few care to know anything about. The author definitely revealed the emotional aspect of the incarcerated population without getting lost in facts and statistics. It was sad at times but still very witty. This book is much needed in the conversation because the prison population is comprised of many types of people that are outcast to society because of social stigma. Angela Davis's mantra on "liberating minds as well as liberating society" is quite poignant here because ALL people need to be supported in our communities and we need to hear these stories. This perspective is much appreciated. Thank you!

First Peoples in a New World: Colonizing Ice Age America, by David J. Meltzer

More than 12,000 years ago, in one of the greatest triumphs of prehistory, humans colonized North America, a continent that was then truly a new world. Just when and how they did so has been one of the most perplexing and controversial questions in archaeology. This dazzling, cutting-edge synthesis, written for a wide audience by an archaeologist who has long been at the center of these debates, tells the scientific story of the first Americans: where they came from, when they arrived, and how they met the challenges of moving across the vast, unknown landscapes of Ice Age North America. David J. Meltzer pulls together the latest ideas from archaeology, geology, linguistics, skeletal biology, genetics, and other fields to trace the breakthroughs that have revolutionized our understanding in recent years. Among many other topics, he explores disputes over the hemisphere's oldest and most controversial sites and considers how the first Americans coped with changing global climates. He also confronts some radical claims: that the Americas were colonized from Europe or that a crashing comet obliterated the Pleistocene megafauna. Full of entertaining descriptions of on-site encounters, personalities, and controversies, this is a compelling behind-the-scenes account of how science is illuminating our past.

From Publishers Weekly
It was long axiomatic among archeologists that the prehistoric Clovis people of the Southwest were the first people in the Americas, arriving 12,000 years ago. Meltzer synthesizes controversial recent evidence that humans arrived in the Americas earlier than that and may not all have come across the Bering Strait from Asia. Meltzer also conveys well the heated debates among archeologists on this crucial subject (an argument among experts after examining evidence in South American turns rather ugly). Drawing on archeology, linguistics, geology, genetics and other disciplines, anthropologist Meltzer (Search for the First Americans) explores that evidence, as well as what we know about the Clovis people, such as evidence regarding Ice Age terrain indicating prehistoric peoples' ability to adapt to an uninhabitable and unfamiliar continent, and the speed with which they might have moved across the new world. Sometimes dense and academic, often lively and occasionally bemused, Meltzer's study—part detective story and part archeological research—is stimulating and sometimes tantalizingly controversial. 16 color and 64 b&w illus. My Students are doing well with this book
By David E. Stuart
I teach Archaeology of New Mexico and the Southwest at the University of New Mexico and went with this book as one of the texts for an upper division class of 30 students. They like this book a lot as it makes some pretty complicated laboratory and dating methods quite accessible. I like it because with only a couple of lapses Meltzer makes this really interesting and sticks to basic scientific method. That makes my job much easier as I try to warn the younger students off of our current popular culture's penchant for "urban legend" as a substitute for fact. This semester the book is helping me to win this ongoing battle. As most of my students have noted in elaborate in-class reviews, a careful reader will pick up several author biases--Meltzer does not spend enough time on South America, or on the real possibility that Monte Verde in southern Chile cries out for more attention on ancient littoral/coastal adaptations and skin/bark boats/canoes as part of the Americas story. Then there is the fact that he really is, at heart, just beginning his evolution away from a long -time role as a "Clovis Firster", but I genuinely admire the way he handled this material. His focus on cross-disciplinary method/data/explanation really is a great strength. In contast his hesitance to fully engage the Paleoindian coastal California/Oregon record and squeeze it thoroughly is a weakness. So is his unfamiliarity with some of the competitive/demographic nuances(actually social anthropology) of hunter -gatherer behavior which could have played big roles in the phenomenon of Clovis's breathtakingly rapid expansion across North America. Or not. I give this book a 9. And I'm one of those characters who often does not assign a text because so many are vapid, and written in impressively tortured prose. To give Meltzer his due, my students view this book as a text worthy of careful twice-through reads. That, frankly, is miraculous. Hence, on their behalf--5 stars.

Excellant book
By Rough Customer
David Meltzer professor of prehistory at SMU in Dallas, has done a great job writing this book. I am a "layman" when it comes to archaeology, but have a great interest in archaeology and early man in North America. Frankly I found the first portion of the book a bit over my head...when anyone starts talking DNA and haplogroups, etc, my eyes glaze over. However, the book more than makes up for that, when I got to the portions about early man arriving on the empty continent of north America, and how they survived, multipied, how certain materials managed to survive thousands of years in some areas, ...etc. Prof Meltzer does a great job of breaking down the basics of early man in language that I easily understood, without trying to impress his fellow academics with his skill in "archaeology-speak". Meltzer also discusses other theories, books on early man, which I enjoyed because I have read most of them.
Mostly, I enjoyed his ability to communicate complex ideas and theories, in plain English, thus enabling me to understand some of the more important prehistory theories and thinking of today. Thanks Prof. Meltzer, job well done, I highly recommend this book! Welcome addition to my library.

First Peoples in a New World
By Fresno Bill
Very easy read, not "technical", hard to put down.
Complex ideas presented in easy to understand terms.
Up to date with current opinions.
Behind the scenes "action" is very interesting.
Gives both sides of arguments. With detailed reasoning.
Only suggestion, I would like to have simple site maps/drawings to illustrate text.
Would recommend this book to everyone.

Wayward Shamans: The Prehistory of an Idea, by Silvia Tomášková

Wayward Shamans tells the story of an idea that humanity’s first expression of art, religion and creativity found form in the figure of a proto-priest known as a shaman. Tracing this classic category of the history of anthropology back to the emergence of the term in Siberia, the work follows the trajectory of European knowledge about the continent’s eastern frontier. The ethnographic record left by German natural historians engaged in the Russian colonial expansion project in the 18th century includes a range of shamanic practitioners, varied by gender and age. Later accounts by exiled Russian revolutionaries noted transgendered shamans. This variation vanished, however, in the translation of shamanism into archaeology theory, where a male sorcerer emerged as the key agent of prehistoric art. More recent efforts to provide a universal shamanic explanation for rock art via South Africa and neurobiology likewise gloss over historical evidence of diversity. By contrast this book argues for recognizing indeterminacy in the categories we use, and reopening them by recalling their complex history.

Review
"The author finely demonstrates how shamans lost their historical diversity and gender variability; Wayward shamans is a highly interesting and rigorous study that should definitely captivate the attention of those interested in the history of religions, of art, and of Western ideas of otherness and their crucial gender dimensions."--Paolo Fortis"Jornal of the Royal Anthropological Institute" (05/01/2015)"

From the Inside Flap
“Wayward Shamans is a 'must read' for all those working with shamanic ethnographies in the interpretation of ancient rock art and archaeology. Through an exploration of the vibrant, contextual, changing nature of 'shamanism' in actual case studies, it exposes the constructed and flawed nature of many modern understandings of 'shamanism'. It provides a vital caution to any reading of the global past that purports to be 'shamanic'.” —Benjamin Smith, Rock Art Research Institute, South Africa

“‘Archaeologists regularly cast shamans as the stars of their scenarios,’ Silvia Tomášková writes in this wonderfully erudite study. But how did shamans come to figure so prominently in a European world of wonder, and how have they managed to endure so long as archetypes of the exotic? Taking us from Siberia to South Africa, through prehistory and primitive art, Tomášková offers us a sharp rendering of the long tangled relationships between religion, science, and art.” —Bruce Grant, Professor of Anthropology at New York University

About the Author
Silvia Tomášková is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Women’s and Gender Studies at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Video Surveillance of Nesting Birds (Studies in Avian Biology)From University of California Press

Declining bird populations, especially those that breed in North American grasslands, have stimulated extensive research on factors that affect nest failure and reduced reproductive success. Until now, this research has been hampered by the difficulties inherent in observing nest activities. Video Surveillance of Nesting Birds highlights the use of miniature video cameras and recording equipment yielding new important and some unanticipated insights into breeding bird biology, including previously undocumented observations of hatching, incubation, fledging, diurnal and nocturnal activity patterns, predator identification, predator-prey interactions, and cause-specific rates of nest loss. This seminal contribution to bird reproductive biology uses tools capable of generating astonishing results with the potential for fresh insights into bird conservation, management, and theory.

From the Inside Flap
“Until recently, inferring identities of predators and monitoring cryptic behaviors at the nest was time-consuming, often with anecdotal results. No more. Video nest surveillance, so aptly revealed in this volume, has ushered in a new era of data collection that allows field workers to link environmental factors with such aspects as the temporal dynamics of predator communities in relation to what the birds are doing at their nests, thus removing much of the guesswork of earlier studies.”--Spencer G. Sealy, University of Manitoba

"Video Surveillance of Nesting Birds shatters earlier beliefs about how birds interact with nest predators. Much of what we thought we knew about nesting and its hazards was flat-out wrong, as authors in this book discovered by using modern technology in the field. As simple as we would like our models of animal behavior to be, this book shows that reality is far more complex and nuanced."--Douglas H. Johnson, University of Minnesota

Precocious Charms: Stars Performing Girlhood in Classical Hollywood Cinema, by Gaylyn Studlar

In Precocious Charms, Gaylyn Studlar examines how Hollywood presented female stars as young girls or girls on the verge of becoming women. Child stars are part of this study but so too are adult actresses who created motion picture masquerades of youthfulness. Studlar details how Mary Pickford, Shirley Temple, Deanna Durbin, Elizabeth Taylor, Jennifer Jones, and Audrey Hepburn performed girlhood in their films. She charts the multifaceted processes that linked their juvenated star personas to a wide variety of cultural influences, ranging from Victorian sentimental art to New Look fashion, from nineteenth-century children’s literature to post-World War II sexology, and from grand opera to 1930s radio comedy. By moving beyond the general category of “woman,” Precocious Charms leads to a new understanding of the complex pleasures Hollywood created for its audience during the half century when film stars were a major influence on America’s cultural imagination.

Review
"Lushly illustrated and compellingly written, this fascinating, timely book will easily suit both academic and general readers."--G. A. Foster"Choice" (06/01/2013)

From the Inside Flap
“Studlar's work in Precocious Charms is especially remarkable considering the scope of film and femininity she has presented. Touching on questions of the youthful female, sexuality, pleasure and disavowal, the book is a fresh approach to studying the characteristics of these celebrated actresses and films.” —Lucy Fischer, Distinguished Professor of Film Studies and English, University of Pittsburgh

“Going far beyond the hackneyed ‘images of’ writing on movie stars we have seen so much of in the past, Gaylyn Studlar's Precocious Charms makes a major contribution to our understanding of how Hollywood works by enabling us to understand the complicated way in which stars function within culture.” —Virginia Wright Wexman, author of Creating The Couple: Love, Marriage, And Hollywood Performance

"Gaylyn Studlar’s study of young female actors is an eye-opening and provocative revisitation of stars that long have been revered by fans and analyzed by film scholars. Thanks to the close analyses of these films that have also marked her previous scholarship, Precocious Charms will be at home on the bookshelf of anyone interested in the vicissitudes of Hollywood’s performances of adolescence, gender, and sexuality." —Donald Crafton, Joseph and Elizabeth Robbie Professor of Film, Television, and Theatre, University of Notre Dame

By Geoffrey Lealand
My copy arrived at week, To date, I have just read Chapter 2 'Cosseting the Nation: or, How To Conquer Fear Itself With Shirley Temple", to inform my research on Shirley Tempe 'double competitions' in New Zealand in 1935-36, framed within a broader framework of the phenomenon of the chid star, cultural memory and fandom. A very insightful and useful chapter. I particularly liked the challenge to conventional feminist wisdom regarding Graham Greene's 1937 critique of Shirley's apparent sexuality, and the inveigation of the wider 'meaning' of Shirley within the context of the family and the Great Depression.

Judging from this chapter, my expectations are that the remainder of the book will be as interesting and insightful,
