Reptiles of the Pacific Islands.

This is in my knowledge the first comprehensive guide to the reptiles and amphibians of the Pacific islands.
The book has a good quality feel to it, with a strong binding, essential if it travels with you.
Presented in the book are the native, as well as the introduced reptile and amphibian species. A large photo section in the middle presents most of the books subjects. Photo quality could be better on some of the plates. Some (few) of the species have drawings of them as well.

Best reference available on the subject.

This is a valuable contribution to the literature on Pacific Island natural history. No field naturalist in the region should be without it. It is certain to become an essential reference. The illustrations are so-so, but should be sufficient to enable users to identify most herps encountered.

Book Review: Reptiles and Amphibians of the Pacific Islands by George Zug
This is a beautiful and scientific guide (paperback of over 300 pages) to the identification of the reptiles and amphibians of the area from the Marshall Islands and Micronesia to the Hawaiian Islands. Zug is one of the world’s most foremost experts on the herpetofauna of the Pacific.
The book opens with an introduction to the herpetofauna of the Pacific Islands and there are maps and detailed lists of species from each island group. At the end of this section there are two pages of selected references. The next section is a short chapter on identifying reptile and amphibian species and then there 35 pages of color identification plates. The photographs comprising these plates are generally very good but most are too small. The next and main section of the book comprises the descriptions and biological data on the various frogs and amphibians included in this book. Each entry includes the scientific and common name, appearance, occurrence, habitat choice and reproduction. The colour plates cover 75% of the species covered in this book.
This book is exceptional but I would have liked to have seen more references cited. This accessible and informative guide is the most comprehensive field reference available and should appeal to both amateur sightseers, naturalists and professional scientists. Highly recommended.
