For more than a quarter of a century, Ildefonso, a Mexican Indian, lived in total isolation, set apart from the rest of the world. He wasn't a political prisoner or a social recluse, he was simply born deaf and had never been taught even the most basic language. Susan Schaller, then a twenty-four-year-old graduate student, encountered him in a class for the deaf where she had been sent as an interpreter and where he sat isolated, since he knew no sign language. She found him obviously intelligent and sharply observant but unable to communicate, and she felt compelled to bring him to a comprehension of words. The book vividly conveys the challenge, the frustrations, and the exhilaration of opening the mind of a congenitally deaf person to the concept of language. This second edition includes a new chapter and afterword.

Praise for the previous edition:
"A meditation on the wonders of language. . . . Susan Schaller's book is a tantalizing glimpse into unexplored territory. . . . Virtually nothing has been written about adults without language, but Ms. Schaller makes it clear that their numbers are greater than we think."
Lou Ann Walker, New York Times Book Review
"This poignant, astonishing, exciting case history touches on many linguistic, philosophic, and educational matters and raises questions not only about teaching the deaf but about the ways people learn."
Publishers Weekly
"Her passionate, powerful book is both eloquent and elegant."
Andrea Barrett, Washington Post Book World
"At the level of sheer pleasure in reading, /i/A Man without Words//i/ is as gripping as a novel, eliciting great sympathy for both protagonist and author. . . . The question that drives it—what is it like to be without language?—should be of interest to any reflective person, and it is one of the great scientific questions of all time."
Steven Pinker, author of The Language Instinct

An Amazing Book!
By David B. Karpf
This book is a truly amazing and page-turning account of how a chance encounter led to a life-long friendship and the teaching of language to a 27 year-old Mayan Deaf man who had no knowledge of language - it's "The Miracle Worker" redux. Once I started, I couldn't put this 214 page tome down -- it's a great read! If you enjoy reading Oliver Sacks' books - buy this book! If you don't like Oliver Sacks' works - still buy this book! If you know any deaf people, or parents of a deaf child - you owe it to yourself to buy this book! If you just have an inquiring mind - buy the damn book!
As much as it is a fascinating 1st person account of a gentle-souled and empathetic and inquisitive young ASL interpreter's experiences teaching language to a previously language-less adult (something that academic research had thought possible only in young children), this book is much more than that. Susan Schaller's quest for knowledge makes it clear that adults lacking language (often congenitally deaf individuals born to hearing parents and raised in poor or rural communities) are not rare. She is a passionate voice for recognition of Deaf culture (and it is indeed a unique culture), and the importance of ASL (American Sign Language), a unique language with its own syntax and idioms, in providing true language to the deaf and contributing to Deaf culture.
Like the false argument between "nature vs. nurture", Schaller adroitly addresses the false dichotomy and zero sum game between learning English and lip-reading and cochlear implants vs. ASL. It's not either-or --- it's both. ASL is both easier for the deaf to learn, and promotes the same neural networks as primary (hearing) language acquisition, thus making subsequent learning of English, and the important skills of reading and writing, easier. Plus, it allows the deaf to join in Deaf culture. Talk about a "win-win"!
Few works are as enjoyable and as eye-opening and mind-expanding as this slim tome. Highly recommended - buy this book!
PS: My only complaint is the apparent inaccessibility of one of the suggested further readings, the paper "Are You Talking to Me?" But all of the other references and "Further Readings" check out....

An absorbing look at language, and those without it
By Sasha Alyson
Can you imagine what it is like to have no language at all? I don't think those of us who grew up with language can begin to imagine not having it.
Nor does Susan Schaller pretend to be able to. But she gives us an absorbing story of her work with Idelfonso, who at age 28 had never had language but on a level he perhaps did not consciously understand, yearned for it. Mixed with this are her observations about a world rarely explored.
And there are more Idelfonso's in the world than one might expect. I work at a literacy project in Laos, where deaf children in remote villages may never be diagnosed as deaf, but merely as unable to learn. Ms. Schaller's book makes clear the urgency of reaching such chldren while they are young. But she also shows that where that doesn't happen, adults too can learn language. It's rare to find a book that is at once so ground-breaking, and so readable.

Wonderful book!
By Joy Seven
I purchased this book as a required book for an American Sign Language course I took recently. It was a GREAT book and I am very glad that it was required. If it was merely recommended I might have passed this gem by. It was a remarkable journey between a hearing teacher and a deaf language-less man. I don't want to spoil the book by telling you much more about it. I just want to highly recommend it as a story of an extraordinary life journey between two people who had to learn to communicate with one another. It is a remarkable book. Enjoy!
