Community-Based Archæology: Research with, by, and for Indigenous and Local Communities, by Sonya Atalay

Archaeology impacts the lives of indigenous, local, or descendant communities. Yet often these groups have little input to archaeological research, and its results remain inaccessible. As archaeologists consider the consequences and benefits of research, the skills, methodologies, and practices required of them will differ dramatically from those of past decades.

As an archaeologist and a Native American, Sonya Atalay has investigated the rewards and complex challenges of conducting research in partnership with indigenous and local communities. In Community-Based Archaeology, she outlines the principles of community-based participatory research and demonstrates how CBPR can be effectively applied to archaeology. Drawing on her own experiences with research projects in North America and the Near East, Atalay provides theoretical discussions along with practical examples of establishing and developing collaborative relationships and sharing results. This book will contribute to building an archaeology that is engaged, ethical, relevant, and sustainable.

From the Inside Flap
“Community Based Participatory Research in archaeology finally comes of age with Atalay’s long-anticipated volume. She promotes a collaborative approach to knowledge gathering, interpretation, and use that benefits descendant communities and archaeological practitioners, contributing to a more relevant, rewarding, and responsible archaeology. This is essential reading for anyone who asks why we do archaeology, for whom, and how best can it be done.” – George Nicholas, author of Being and Becoming Indigenous Archaeologists

“Sonya Atalay shows archaeologists how the process of Community Based Participatory Research can move our efforts at collaboration with local communities beyond theory and good intentions to a sustainable practice. This is a game-changing book that every archaeologist must read.” – Randall H. McGuire, author of Archaeology as Political Action

New and Engaged Archeology
By Beverly Stoeltje
This work points the way to research that can be carried out in collaboration with indigenous communities. Based in an informed philosophy and methodology, Atalay draws on her own research experience with the Anishinabek (indigenous people from the midwestern region of the US and Canada) and at the classic site in Turkey - Catalhoyuk to illustrate the procedures and goals for conducting research that is consistent with the goals of indigenous peoples living at or near an archeological site. While this study demonstrates the significance of ethical approaches to research, it also demonstrates the benefits gained by local communities when they are involved. This study is a valuable aide not only for archeologists but for anyone interested in heritage, Native Americans, research, community based organizations, educational approaches to community identity. While written from the point of view of a research archeologist, it is written in an accessible style, available to all readers.

Kindness Reaps A Dividend
By dragon711
All too often, archaeology has been used as a political tool to disenfranchise communities, alienate them from their heritage, and demonstrate the might of a colonizing power. How else would ancient Sumerian artifacts have wound up in say, Berlin? As a Native American herself, Atalay provides a different approach, one that focuses on building communities, not alienating them. As Atalay demonstrates, when local communities are engaged and made to feel passionate about their heritage and culture through archaeology of their past, everybody wins. Local people win pride, recognition and a revitalization and affirmation of their identities- archaeologists win local knowledge and respect and provide a measure of security. I can truly say that Atalay's insights were inspiring, eye-opening and life-changing. I may have to read this again to truly grasp everything it was trying to teach, but it has utterly redefined for me the future direction of my career in my field.

A must read for Archaeologists
By greg
This is a very insightful book and addresses ethical concerns and new approaches in conducting archaeology within indigenous communities. This book and "Decolonizing Methodologies" were a required text for my archaeology class at UMass Amherst and I learned a great deal of valuable information from them both.
