This definitive biography offers a new critical assessment of the life, works, and ideas of Herbert E. Bolton (1870–1953), a leading historian of the American West, Mexico, and Latin America. Bolton, a famous pupil of Frederick Jackson Turner, formulated a concept—the borderlands—that is a foundation of historical studies today. His research took him not only to the archives and libraries of Mexico but out on the trails blazed by Spanish soldiers and missionaries during the colonial era. Bolton helped establish the reputation of the University of California and the Bancroft Library in the eyes of the world and was influential among historians during his lifetime, but interest in his ideas waned after his death. Now, more than a century after Bolton began to investigate the Mexican archives, Albert L. Hurtado explores his life against the backdrop of the cultural and political controversies of his day.

From the Inside Flap
A vivid, compelling, and timely biography of an historian who struggled, sometimes against his own prejudices, to make both the United States and American history less provincial. Al Hurtado has managed to capture more than half a century of American intellectual life, social life, and institution building through the story of single man.”Richard White, author of Railroaded: The Transcontinentals and the Making of Modern America
This definitive biography does double duty as a candid chronicle of academic history on the Pacific Slope, with all the rivalries, shifting allegiances, and promotional disputes that swirled around the persistent productivity of Herbert Eugene Bolton, academic archon of the Spanish Borderlands.”Kevin Starr, University of Southern California
Al Hurtado fills a void with this comprehensive biography of Herbert Eugene Bolton, the historian who invented the concept of the Spanish Borderlands’ of North America and imagined a hemispheric history of a Greater America’ that transcended national boundaries. Here he is, warts and all, amidst all the messy and fascinating details of his professional life. Deeply researched and written with verve and irony, this is a marvelous read.”John Mack Faragher, author (with Robert V. Hine) of The American West: A New Interpretive History.

Giving Turner the Last Word
By William Kostlevy
In a 1974 tribute to historian Charles A. Beard Henry Steele Commager noted that "like Turner and Parrington, like Veblen and Jane Addams [Beard] was a beneficiary of and a contributor to the intellectual ferment which seethed in Chicago, Madison and other middle border cities." Among historians alone the names of other Midwesterners come to mind Carl Becker, Frederick Merk, John D. Hicks, Grace Lee Nute and Louise Phelps Kellogg. Another significant historian to emerge from the Upper Midwest is Monroe County Wisconsin native and long time director of the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley Herbert Bolton. In his fine biography of Bolton Albert L. Hurtado tells the story of his humble origins, hard work, training at Wisconsin under "the master" Frederick Jackson Turner and his doctoral work at Penn under John Bach McMaster. Hurtado skillfully documents Bolton's rapid rise to prominence in the historical profession, his pioneering work in gathering source materials for the study of the history of the Spanish presence in North America and his growing commitment to hemispheric or "greater American" history. As Bolton wrote in 1931 "[it was] absurd to assume that the Western Hemisphere was developed in isolated chunks...yet we in the United States have proceeded on this assumption." (184) In the end Hurtado suggests that Bolton's scholarship despite being a product of a less enlightened time does point toward our enlightened present where the borderlands are "the meeting place of diverse cultures" and "an important foundation for today's multicultural borderlands studies." (2).
As I've hinted my one concern with Hurtado's otherwise impressive work is his misplaced "ritual slaying" of the elders. As early as 1934 Avery Craven in his introduction to Turner's still valuable The United States 1830-1850: The Nation and Its Sections noted that "the Master's "chief weakness lay in uneven knowledge of the varied units which make up and contribute to America life." In fact Turner's truncated chapter on "Texas and the Far West" suggests incomplete research not some moral failure. Linked to Hurtado's presentism is his condescension toward the rural Midwest. At one point Hurtado writes "To Herbert from the provinces, Penn most have seemed the center of a social and scholarly world he had only dreamed of in Wisconsin." Or Bolton's comment that Mexico City reminded him favorably of Milwaukee is interpreted as "the thinking of the provincial Yankee greenhorn." As Commager noted in Greencastle, IN, the intellectual and cultural center of North American at the turn of the twentieth century was not in Philadelphia or Berkeley but far closer to Milwaukee. Ironically or fittingly, Hurtado gives a Midwesterner, Turner, the last (if unattributed) word, "Every generation writes history anew." The fuller Turner quotation helps us understand the limitations of Hurtado's perspective. "Each age writes the history of the past anew with reference to the conditions uppermost in its own time." I am a contemporary of Hurtado who shares his desire for a truly diverse and multicultural history. Still I wish he would spend less time judging Bolton for not having liberal twenty-first century sensibilities and more time attempting to understand him and his world. But yes (if you look beyond Hurtado's own provincialism) there is much in this book for those interested in historiography and the development of history as an academic discipline in the United States.

terrific read
By litgal
This is a terrific read, a new bio on Herbert Eugene Bolton, historian of the West, Latin America and the Spanish Borderlands. Follows his career from Texas to UC Berkeley where he taught a popular History of the Americas course, built up the history dept and Bancroft Library, which would become a treasuretrove of Western and Latin Americana, and researched and wrote numerous tomes on the early Spanish explorers of North America.

Great history of the Southwest with eye on Spain
By JA Coleman
Bolton's book deserves to be read as it really balances the Anglocentric view of American history that most of us are taught. There is more to American history than just Plymouth Rock and Bolton shows us this other world.
