Islam and Christianity: Theological Themes in Comparative Perspective, by John Renard, George Renard

In light of the widespread public perception of incompatibility between Islam and Christianity, this book provides a much-needed straightforward comparison of these two great faith traditions from a broad theological perspective. Award-winning scholar John Renard illuminates the similarities as well as the differences between Islam and Christianity through a clear exploration of four major dimensions—historical, creedal, institutional, and ethical and spiritual. Throughout, the book features comparisons between concrete elements such as creedal statements, prayer texts, and writings from major theologians and mystics. It also includes a glossary of technical theological terms. For western readers in particular, this balanced, authoritative work overturns some common stereotypes about Islam, especially those that have emerged in the decade since September 11, 2001.

This work eloquently refutes common Western stereotypes regarding Muslims and Islam and adds to the growing call for Muslim-Christian understanding on a global scale. It is an elegantly crafted book."—David L. Johnston, author of Earth, Empire and Sacred Text: Muslims and Christians as Trustees of Creation

"John Renard offers a lucid portrayal of the major aspects of Christianity and Islam, identifying numerous points of congruence without denying significant dissimilarities. Come All Ye Faithful
By L. King
Fascinating examination using historical examples of striking parallels between the two faiths . Renard mines a rich field in order to find common ground. For example, both religions are based on the teachings of a singular and extraordinary charismatic and morally sound teacher whose actions are to be imitated (pp175) as a model for right action. Both begin as new communities confronted with the problem of succession of leadership and are split upon the resolution. Catholic/Eastern Orthodox is to Protestant as Shia is to Sunni. The former in each pairing have structured chains of authority whereas the latter tends to be more diffuse. Including Judaism, all are rooted in scriptural history which is also extrapolated upon as the basis of moral behaviour and subject to guidelines for proper interpretation, and all have subscribed to the belief that God has blessed them as a people.

Whereas Judaism remained spiritually rooted in a specific place, Christianity and Islam spread to become global religions and as such developed into political empires. Renard notes (pp37) that the original emphasis of separation of Church and State ("Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's" - Matthew 22:21) ends with the emperor Constantine's council at Nicasea in 325 A.D. (pp37) which made Christianity the official faith of the Roman Empire, whereas Islam began as conquest, both military and political, but evolved into a structure of Caliph ("rightly guided") vs Ulamma (clergy).

For both faiths there are multiple levels of interpretation of scripture. I was pleased to see (pp31) his repetition of an old catch phrase I learned in school about this: historia, allegoria, tropologia (ethics) and anagogia (eschatology), which is coupled with "What our fathers did; Where our faith is hid; rules to guide our life; Where we end our strife. " Similarly ibn Abbis (d. 638 - pp33) uses tafsir (literal rendition of events), and "arabic" meaning (which I interpret as poetic or lyrical), mutashabihat (allegorical) and ta'wil (mystical or symbolic) as different but complementary modes of explanation of sacred text. Another interesting field of discourse is on the different approaches to free will - while the Mu'tazila school of Islamic itjihad believed in human agency, this group succumbed long ago to the 4 dominant legal schools who argued that God's omnipotence and the eschatological trend of history towards final judgement left little room for human action, however moral responsibility and God's kindness required at least the semblance of freedom, at least in thought and intent. (pp166, 226). Whereas Christian thinking emphasizes Man's dominion over the earthly domain. Yet each faith contains prayer asking God to intercede. Ah, such is kismet. ;-)

Chapter 4 compares a similar themes in the works of Christian vs Muslim theologians from Platonists such as Augustine and al Farabi to those who teach that personal salvation arises cumulatively from personal acts - Ghazali for Muslims and Thomas Aquinas. In chapters 8 & 9 the author also examines similarity between liturgical elements: "The Opening" from Book I of the Quran is likened to "The Lords Prayer". Renard indicates with several examples similarities in liturgical poetry as well as narrative allegory where he offers "A Pearl of Great Price" against the Persian "Conference of the Birds", both pilgrimage tales leading towards revelation of the divine spirit. Where he falls a flat is when resorting to music - having pulled out Hildegard of Bingen he admits that Islam is opposed to music of any kind; what follows is a discussion of medieval religious poets and their themes. However Islamic prayer is chanted, IMV a missed comparison.

Renard's work is rarefied in tenor but also edifying and educational. Renard reaches out by laying an ecumenical basis for dialog, if only so that both parties by imbibing the other can appreciate the journey they are on. He does an excellent job of sketching the field, however none of the above should be considered the final word as his goal no more than outlining areas of common interest.

I liked it, but it's not for everyone. If any readers of my review can recommend a similar ecumenical work from a modern Islamic source it would be much appreciated.
