Travis Rayne Pickering argues that the advent of ambush hunting approximately two million years ago marked a milestone in human evolution, one that established the social dynamic that allowed our ancestors to expand their range and diet. He challenges the traditional link between aggression and human predation, however, claiming that while aggressive attack is a perfectly efficient way for our chimpanzee cousins to kill prey, it was a hopeless tactic for early human hunters, who—in comparison to their large, potentially dangerous prey—were small, weak, and slow-footed. Technology that evolved from wooden spears to stone-tipped spears and ultimately to the bow and arrow increased the distance between predator and prey and facilitated an emotional detachment that allowed hunters to stalk and kill large game. Based on studies of humans and of other primates, as well as on fossil and archaeological evidence, Rough and Tumble offers a new perspective on human evolution by decoupling ideas of aggression and predation to build a more realistic understanding of what it is to be human.

About the Author
Travis Rayne Pickering is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and Honorary Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa). He directs the multidisciplinary Swartkrans Paleoanthropological Research Project and is a co-director of the Olduvai Paleoanthropology and Paleoecology Project. He is the co-founder and coeditor of the Journal of Taphonomy and the coeditor of the book Breathing Life into Fossils.

Rough Reading With A Provocative Conclusion

In "Rough and Tumble," paleoanthropologist Travis Rayne Pickering summarizes the leading research on early man's hunting efforts before offering his own argument that earlier researchers have overlooked the "resolve, brain power, and composure" required for successful hunting endeavors (p. 124). Pickering argues that by focusing on aggression and drawing parallels from chimpanzee hunting habits, other researchers have drawn incorrect conclusions about our evolutionary path. This mistake matters because "Human hunting underlies humanness. Successful human hunting is necessarily decoupled from human aggression" (p. 8). All this adds up to a refutation of Raymond Dart's killer ape hypothesis.
Professor Pickering succeeds in making this material accessible to a broad audience by carefully explaining the importance behind the evidence and theories he sets out. I do not have the requisite background to weigh in on his credibility or accuracy, but he writes clearly and persuasively. Ultimately though, I would rather have encountered this material in a much shorter format such as a magazine article. Even though the book is only 130 pages, the summary of research in the field covers 95% of the material, much of which reads like an intellectual biography of Raymond Dart. At times, the reader is a mere bystander to Pickering's arguments with others in the field. For example, Pickering spends pages 117-119 debating Ron Clarke on the disputed source of cut marks on a skeletal fossil. I do not doubt Pickering's point that the debate is significant, but the extremely personal tone he takes in these sections is awkward.
Overall, Pickering's conclusions are thought-provoking, but not decidedly worth struggling through the early chapters to reach his arguments. I expect this is a must read book for those with a passion for this field, but I cannot recommend it for a wider audience.

Very erudite study of our early ancestors.Written well with clear, readable language. Excellent book. It would be great reading material for anthropological studies, both for students and laymen.
