A most interesting survey of the link between the madrigal of the High Renaissance and the foundations of Baroque opera! Calcagno makes an extremely cogent argument for the notion of opera as an externalization of the implicit dialogue between various unnamed, internalized voices in the madrigal to the visible presence of these personae in opera as drama per musica.
