This is a courageous book! With care and compassion, Miriam Ticktin's ethnography of humanitarian aid in France dismantles our most cherished assumptions about care, compassion and sympathy as the political motivations that govern immigration and health care policy in France. By implication, Ticktin's book unravels how the sentiments of care and compassion have become forces of exclusion in the daily struggle to aid the most disenfranchised and disregarded inhabitants of our world. In no uncertain terms, this book asks us to rethink what is really human about our humanitarian impulses, and what has become uncaring about our attitudes towards suffering. Anyone interested in international politics, health care, ethics, cultural anthropology, cultural studies, democracy, disability studies, immigration policy, refugees, gender studies, NGOs, and the medicalization of care will find this well written, well documented, and well argued book essential. [This review is based on the Kindle version of the book].

The concept of human "rights" too often is understood as a self-evident good. Ticktin offers us a new way of understanding some of the problematic uses of this concept, and the the result is a highly readable and insightful book. Highly recommended!
