This book illuminates various aspects of a central but unexplored area of American history: the midcentury Japanese American experience. A vast and ever-growing literature exists, first on the entry and settlement of Japanese immigrants in the United States at the turn of the 20th century, then on the experience of the immigrants and their American-born children during World War II. Yet the essential question, What happened afterwards?” remains all but unanswered in historical literature. Excluded from the wartime economic boom and scarred psychologically by their wartime ordeal, the former camp inmates struggled to remake their lives in the years that followed. This volume consists of a series of case studies that shed light on various developments relating to Japanese Americans in the aftermath of their wartime confinement, including resettlement nationwide, the mental and physical readjustment of the former inmates, and their political engagement, most notably in concert with other racialized and ethnic minority groups.

From the Inside Flap
"The tragedy of incarceration has dominated historical studies of Japanese Americans, and few have explored what happened in the years that followed. A welcome addition to the literature, Greg Robinson's insightful study, After Camp, will appeal to historians of immigration, the Asian American experience, comparative race relations, and the twentieth-century United States more broadly."
David K. Yoo, author of Growing Up Nisei
"Greg Robinson has boldly and rightfully identified historians’ neglect of Japanese American experiences after World War II. Rather than focusing exclusively on the Pacific Coast, After Camp offers a nuanced exploration of the competing strategies and ideas about postwar assimilation among ethnic Japanese on a truly national scale. The depth and range of Robinson's research is impressive, and After Camp convincingly moves beyond the tragedy of internment to explain how the drama of resettlement was equally if not more important in shaping the lives of contemporary Japanese Americans."Allison Varzally, author of Making a Non-White America.

The Mid-Century Japanese American Experience
By dwood78
There have been a number of books on Japanese Americans pre-WWII as well as during the interment years. Yet the post camp years are not as talked about nor studied as much as it should.
Written by an associate professor at a Montreal university (who previously wrote another book on the Japanese interment during the war years), this is an interesting collection of essays on the post-interment of Japanese Americans. The 1st part of the book talks about how the former internees tried to returned to their former life on the West Coast despite the hatred towards them that still existed there after the war. The books also talks about the Japanese Americans experience in other cities as well like New York & Detroit.
The 1st part of the 2nd half of the book talks about the graphic memoir Citizen 13660 the 1st book to focus on the Japanese intern experience. While the 2nd half is on efforts from a number of Nisei (2nd generation Japanese Americans) intellectuals to call on the community to "assimilate" which means different things to different people-some Nisei want to join forces with other groups- mainly Blacks to focus on equal rights for all while others view assimilation as adopting non-Japanese habits like having English names & marring non-Japanese.
The final part of the book focus on Japanese American relationships with other minority groups-Mexicans, Jews & Blacks-the latter of these three is what interest me the most here- esp. since it's only fairly recently that historians & scholars are looking into race relationships between Blacks & Asians. Judging from this book, it would seem that Blacks & Japanese Americans had an interesting if at times shaky relationship. During the interment camp years a number of Black figures spoke out against the interment of their fellow citizens. This relationship between the two groups was on & off until the rise of the civil rights movement when race relations took a sour turn- by this time many Nisei began to have the same attitude towards Blacks as their White counterparts (who by the 1960s have begin to accepted them as Americans, but still refuse to accept Blacks however) to the point that the assassination of MLK Jr. got very little notice in the Japanese American press.
All in all I found this is but an interesting read & a well researched one too. This is great book for these who what to know more about the Japanese American experience mid-century or their relationships with other minority groups during this time period.
