Why Calories Count: From Science to Politics (California Studies in Food and Culture), by Marion Nestle, Malden Nesheim

Calories—too few or too many—are the source of health problems affecting billions of people in today’s globalized world. Although calories are essential to human health and survival, they cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. They are also hard to understand. In Why Calories Count, Marion Nestle and Malden Nesheim explain in clear and accessible language what calories are and how they work, both biologically and politically. As they take readers through the issues that are fundamental to our understanding of diet and food, weight gain, loss, and obesity, Nestle and Nesheim sort through a great deal of the misinformation put forth by food manufacturers and diet program promoters. They elucidate the political stakes and show how federal and corporate policies have come together to create an “eat more” environment. Finally, having armed readers with the necessary information to interpret food labels, evaluate diet claims, and understand evidence as presented in popular media, the authors offer some candid advice: Get organized. Eat less. Eat better. Move more. Get political.

Along with offering a fascinating history, they show how an understanding of calorie needs saved lives in the global fight against hunger. --Emily Kaiser Thelin"The Wall Street Journal" (04/20/2012)"

From the Inside Flap
"If you want to understand what's wrong with our eating habits, you must understand the central role that calories play. Nestle and Nesheim are two of the America's finest nutritionists–and this book explains, clearly and succinctly, why calories count. It is essential reading not only for people interested in food policy, but for everyone who wants to eat well and be well." –Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal

"This superbly well-researched and scientifically sound book makes it clear how today’s food environment often overrides physiological regulatory controls of body weight. Why Calories Count is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand why so much about food choice lies in the hands of food marketers whose goal is to sell more products, not necessarily in the interests of public health." –Dr. David Kessler, author of The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite

“We need to understand what ‘empty calories’ are, so that we can feed our children food that is truly nourishing. On this topic, there is no better teacher than Marion Nestle, who writes with meticulousness, clarity and grace.” –Alice Waters, author of The Art of Simple Food: Notes, Lessons, and Recipes from a Delicious Revolution

"Thank god authorities like Nestle and Nesheim have teamed up to give us an epic view of a calorie: what it is, where it came from, what it means, how and why we count them. Thank god they’ve managed to decode nutritional science into a commonsense language we can all understand. And thank god they’ve put calories in their place in a wider cultural and political context to help us think meaningfully about the food our lives depend upon. I’m grateful." –Betty Fussell, author of Raising Steaks: The Life & Times of American Beef

“Calories. We all talk about them—many are even obsessed with them—but what do we really know about them? Not much. Marion Nestle and Malden Nesheim’s latest book changes all that, pulling back the curtain on calories and helping us understand them in a whole new light. You’ll never look at a 100-calorie pack of corporate cookies the same way again.” –Anna Lappé, author of Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About It

An outstanding book about the humble little calorie
By Craig...E
I was prepared to spend most of my time skimming this book for useful information while avoiding the boring parts that often encumber these kinds of texts, but I read this one cover to cover in just a few days. In fact, as I was reading it and nearing the end I tweeted:
"Sad that I'm almost done reading 'Why Calories Count.' It's so good that I don't want it to end. Really." (@weighthacker)

That's because Why Calories Count is the fascinating story of what calories are, how they were discovered, how they're measured (my favorite way: using 'double labeled water' calorimeters), how our bodies use them, why they're important to us, how they affect our weight, and how our society views them. If you're at all interested in the calorie, I don't think you'll find a better book.

What I especially appreciate about Marion Nestle and Malden Nesheim's approach is that they don't (ahem) sugar coat anything. When information about certain aspects of calories is unclear, they say that. If there are conflicting points of view on a topic, they raise them. If food companies are employing deceitful practices (they are), they're pointed out. They also explain how the regulations around calories came into being and how politics often plays more of a role than science when it comes to our nutrition labels. It's not as dry as it sounds.

All of the information is put into the context of why we're experiencing record levels of obesity and being overweight, and what we can actually do about it. This isn't a diet book, but it does look at many of the popular diets out there and explains why they work and which one is for you. (Why: You eat fewer calories. Which One: Any one that helps you eat fewer calories.) If you're trying to lose weight or know someone who is, this is a must read.

A truth tale of food and society. Powerful and much needed.
By GskFn
Brilliance crackles in the pages of Marion Nestle and Malden Nesheim's "Why Calories Count." The authors, who are professors of food science (and Nestle also in sociology) at NYU and Cornell respectively, deliver a plain-English presentation for non-scientists. They unpack what is a calorie in physical terms, and how calories relate to food from different sources - carbohydrate, protein, fat, and alcohol. They survey alternative theories and folk notions about what makes weight loss or weight gain happen. Contrary to "lowfat" and "low-carb" diet advocates and food marketers, Nestle and Nesheim reaffirm, loudly and clearly, a long-held scientific proposition: that calorie balancing, not food composition, overwhelmingly determines weight gain, weight loss, and weight steadiness.

That makes a good book right there. But "Why Calories Count" does a whole lot more. In just a couple-hundred pages of prose that is colorful, reasonable, and easy-to-read, Nestle and Nesheim unfurl a scientific detective story about food and society. They cut through a lot of dieting mythology and food marketers' hype. They expose troubling trends in eating as a matter of public health. And they reveal clear-eyed solutions to better eating that are available to individuals.

Standing on sound science, the book stages a drama about food and society in America against a 125-year historical backdrop. The protagonist is the American food consumer - sometimes overeater and sometimes dieter - who is driven by personal taste, biology, and good intentions at times. The cast of characters includes: food scientists, professional nutritionists, and diet marketers; farmers, agribusiness, and food marketers; restaurants; and food policymakers in federal, state, and local governments.

One problem the authors clear up in this book is a lack of public understanding for what a calorie is. Early in the story, the star is Wilbur Atwater, a 19th-century chemist and public health advocate whose work on food and calories stands almost unaltered today, more than 100 years after his last days in the laboratory. The book's history-of-science stories about food studies, including the technology used to understand calories over the years, makes the idea of "calories" - in food and in the body - something you really can picture. One can almost imagine building a lab-quality "calorimeter" in a home or restaurant kitchen after reading this book. Not that you'd want to, though. And not that you'd need to. On the question of how to estimate calories, the authors emphasize that the basic estimates are mostly good enough, using published lists and online databases, along with a food scale and measuring cups.

The one place you'll want to be skeptical of published calorie counts is on restaurant menus that state calorie estimates. Federal and local laws give restaurants a lot of leeway on calorie postings. Not surprisingly, they tend to lowball their estimates. Sometimes the real counts are double what the menu says! (p. 215). This makes it tricky when eating out because it's very hard to estimate calories without knowing what all is in the food, and in what proportions. The details of restaurant food ingredients and measurements belong to the restaurant owner and the kitchen staff, not the patron who eats the meal. Even professional nutritionists come to grief when they try to estimate the calories in restaurant meals: they typically underestimate by about 30%. (p. 187) Add the fact that Americans of all ages are eating out much more than ever before, and you've got a public health challenge that Nestle and Nesheim tackle head-on in this book. They blame our "eat more" environment.

On the subject of obesity and public health, the authors have a lot to say. Obesity in America and worldwide has risen sharply in recent decades. From 1975 to 2008, the rate of obesity in America jumped from 13% to 34%. (p. 141) One group of experts at Harvard University predicts the rate of obesity in the U.S. will balloon to 42%.

Nestle and Nesheim summarize the health risks of obesity: "Concerns about obesity would not be so pronounced if this condition were simply a matter of appearance. Excessive calorie intake does not always cause disease, but when it does the problems can be serious. And the list of such problems is long, including such leading causes of death and disability as coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers (endometrial, breast, colon), stroke, liver, and gallbladder disease, sleep apnea and respiratory problems, osteoarthritis, and gynecological problems such as abnormal menses and infertility. (p. 140-41)

How does a person slim down? This is not a "diet book" per se, but it certainly can help any dieter or mindful eater. The authors recognize that many readers are concerned to identify which diets work, which don't, and why. Nestle's and Nesheim's answer to that is strewn throughout the book and highlighted in chapter 20, entitled, "Do Some Kinds of Diets Work Better Than Others?" Their answer is that while some diets are more nourishing and advisable than others, *any* diet in controlled portions can bring about weight loss if the dieter expends more calories than he or she eats. Food professionals and the public have heard this sort of message time and again for more than a hundred years, beginning with Wilbur Atwater. The key is calorie balancing and creating a deficit to lose weight. But for reasons that Nestle and Nesheim unravel, calorie balancing is very difficult for most people to manage directly. Many diet prescriptions may help dieters achieve calorie regulation through indirect means.

From the standpoint of sound nutrition and calorie balancing success, the authors endorse good-old "moderation" for those who are able to get by on that maxim. And they look with qualified favor on low-sugar diet strategies (p. 170-72). For some people, a simple rule of moderation is sufficient to regulate calories and balance one's weight appropriately. The authors say they, personally, "are lucky enough to be able to stop when we've had enough. If you can't do that - and we know many people who can't - choosing foods with a low glycemic index (those low in rapidly absorbable sugars and starches) is always a good idea, as is setting some limits on the size and frequency of desserts and sugary drinks. Everything is fine in moderation. But if you can't do moderation, you had best figure out some limits you can live with." (p. 222)

If scientists have known for so long that calorie balancing is the biological mechanism underlying weight management, why don't people just do it? Successful food marketers and restauranteurs know part of the answer to that. (p. 184-5) "Why Calories Count" cites Brian Wansink's excellent book on food and marketing psychology, Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think (2006). For one, Americans have come to eat out more often, and expect larger servings. At home too, larger portions of everything has become the norm. Food ubiquity and eating frequency have increased, and food industry marketing has intensified the allure of the call to "eat more." Research shows that the food industry has turned even health-seeking eaters into gluttons through the "health halo" effect. This is a paradox where people who choose snack foods with healthy-sounding labels (low-calorie or lowfat) wind up eating larger portions - so much more that they wind up eating more calories in the end! Everywhere, outside the home and inside, larger portions prevail.

Faced with this, human biology is ill-suited. The evolutionary process of natural selection, having taken place over a ga-zillion years, has not prepared us for this very recent environment. Nestle and Nesheim make this point throughout the book: "The human body does a superb job of making sure that it gets enough calories to meet biological needs but is much less effective at knowing when calories are in excess. The result is that it is much easier for you and everyone else to overeat than to stop eating when you are no longer hungry." (p. 78)

Elsewhere they put a still heavier point on social drivers to overeating that overcome biology in modern life: "In food environments that aggressively promote overconsumption of high-calorie foods, the `eat more' signals overpower those that promote satiety. In such environments, matters largely beyond personal control - the presence of other people, the location of meals, how often meals appear, how large food portions might be, how tasty the foods are, and how they are advertised - are remarkably effective at overcoming physiological regulatory mechanisms." (108-9).

Once someone has put on extra pounds, biology works against the dieter's best intentions. "Some people can handle the temptations of an `eat more' food environment and remain relatively thin, but many others cannot and find it all too easy to consume more calories than they need." (p. 172)

The emphasis here on biology is interesting, relevant, and clarifying. At the same time, I take Nestle and Nesheim to be giving short shrift to the *psychology* of overeating. They say you can't change your biology, and that may be true; but you can re-learn new habits and re-arrange some aspects of your eating environment - especially at home. Biology and psychology are related and do overlap, but they're not the same thing. Different mechanisms are at work in natural selection and learned habits. The resulting solutions may be different.

Barbara Rolls, creator of the Volumetrics diet, is cited in "Why Calories Count" (p. 220) as one example of a popular diet that teaches people to "eat less." Rolls, a professor of nutritional studies at Pennsylvania State University, writes in her latest book, The Ultimate Volumetrics Diet: Smart, Simple, Science-Based Strategies for Losing Weight and Keeping It Off (2012) that the psychology of eating is thrown off track in pursuit of food volume - even though she would agree fully with Nestle and Nesheim that calories are the body's bottom line for weight regulation. (p.22) Rolls suggests ways to seize the volume bias and make it work in the dieter's favor. This is one example of a psychological maneuver that Nestle and Nesheim's model squeezes out of the picture by jumping too quickly from a society-level analysis of food supply and marketing down to physiology and genetics. They skip psychology. Or worse, perhaps they glibly imply its reduction to physiology, which I doubt. (See pages 78, 101, 108-9, 183-5, 226, and 234.) That one aspect of the book is not very good science. It also leaves something to be desired in terms of realizing the book's full promise as a resource for public health advocacy.

Nestle and Nesheim do make fleeting references to food psychology (p. 184-5). When they do, they talk mostly about problems, not solutions. Where they do recommend non-biological solutions is at a societal level of food economics and regulatory politics. I certainly see value in the political discussion they raise. I'm glad for the introduction to it in "Why Calories Count," and I look forward to following Marion Nestle's public advocacy on this. She has held a well-deserved place as a national leader pressing for better public health through food regulatory policy.

Recognizing the book's rigor, incisiveness, and anyone-can-read clarity on the very important theme of calorie balancing, I give "Why Calories Count" five stars, despite my disappointment about its slippery handling of food psychology. Overall, this book is excellent, original, and badly needed. General readers as well as food professionals will understand it and appreciate the keep-it-real prose. Some readers may draw a sigh of relief to have solid clarity brought to bear on conflicting discussions of foods and diets. At base, the message is simple and more than a hundred years old: calories count. The question this book goes a long way toward answering is why we've had trouble with that. Suggestions as to what we can do to remedy the situation are begun in the book, and warrant further pursuit at the levels of society ("politics" and sociology) and individual behavior (food psychology and dietary advice) to help consumers resist "eat more" marketing and achieve calorie balancing.

THE book for laypeople
By Dimmer
I am not a layman but a cardiologist and my patients often get misinformation from a variety of garbage / misinformed dietary and nutrition popular books. This book is excellent with no grandiose claims but real information about calories and how one can understand them and make sense (or the lack of it) of all the other books out there which are hype with no real content or evidence based data. This is the only book they really need.

The Evolution of Phylogenetic Systematics (Species and Systematics)From University of California Press

The Evolution of Phylogenetic Systematics aims to make sense of the rise of phylogenetic systematics—its methods, its objects of study, and its theoretical foundations—with contributions from historians, philosophers, and biologists. This volume articulates an intellectual agenda for the study of systematics and taxonomy in a way that connects classification with larger historical themes in the biological sciences, including morphology, experimental and observational approaches, evolution, biogeography, debates over form and function, character transformation, development, and biodiversity. It aims to provide frameworks for answering the question: how did systematics become phylogenetic?

When Mandates Work: Raising Labor Standards at the Local LevelFrom University of California Press

Starting in the 1990s, San Francisco launched a series of bold but relatively unknown public policy experiments to improve wages and benefits for thousands of local workers. Since then, scholars have documented the effects of those policies on compensation, productivity, job creation, and health coverage. Opponents predicted a range of negative impacts, but the evidence tells a decidedly different tale. This book brings together that evidence for the first time, reviews it as a whole, and considers its lessons for local, state, and federal policymakers.

Review
"By helping other cities to pass such laws, the authors of When Mandates Work have performed a great public service that should pay dividends to workers across the nation in the years ahead."--Randy Shaw"Beyond Chron" (02/06/2014)

From the Inside Flap

"As this important work shows, a decent society requires standards of minimal decency—and they can be designed in a way that improves rather than distorts markets. Mandatory reading for anyone interested in smart mandates."—Robert B. Reich, Chancellor's Professor of Public Policy, University of California at Berkeley.

"At a time when powerful special interests have pushed to roll back workers' rights in statehouses across the country, this book provides another vision for how to build a strong economy—by establishing standards for fair and decent treatment of all workers and enforcing them. It turns out that the high road pays off with greater prosperity and opportunity for all. Whether you're sitting on a city council or negotiating an international trade agreement, this book serves as a policymaker's primer for spurring broad and sustainable economic growth and fostering social justice."—Congressman George Miller

“With tight government budgets at all levels of government, mandates are likely to become increasingly common. When Mandates Work provides a comprehensive, impartial evaluation of a range of San Francisco’s groundbreaking mandates, with surprisingly supportive results.”—Alan B. Krueger, Bendheim Professor of Economics and Public Affairs, Princeton University

"When Mandates Work makes a unique and important contribution and adds a sorely needed perspective to current debates over public policy going on in other states and nationally. The work provides strong empirical evidence that intelligent regulation can improve the functioning of markets as well as improve the lives and living standards of workers—and can do it without reducing employment."—Eileen Appelbaum, Senior Economist, Center for Economic and Policy Research and former Professor at Rutgers University's School of Management and Labor Relations

“The experience of one of this nation’s great cities shows us that through smart employment standards—such as higher wages, paid sick days, and health care spending requirements—we can improve the quality of life for low-wage workers while protecting jobs and fostering economic prosperity. This is essential reading for anyone interested in economic fairness and public policy.”—Senator Tom Harkin

"When Mandates Work makes important scholarly contributions toward our understanding of mandates for minimum wage and living wage, health care, domestic-partner benefits, and sick leave. The high quality and breadth of the coverage in this book should make it a standard reference for the next one to two decades."—Robert Pollin, Professor of Economics and Co-Director, Political Economy Research Institute (PERI), UMASS-Amherst

Race, Monogamy, and Other Lies They Told You: Busting Myths about Human Nature, by Agustín Fuentes

There are three major myths of human nature: humans are divided into biological races; humans are naturally aggressive; men and women are truly different in behavior, desires, and wiring. In an engaging and wide-ranging narrative Agustín Fuentes counters these pervasive and pernicious myths about human behavior. Tackling misconceptions about what race, aggression, and sex really mean for humans, Fuentes incorporates an accessible understanding of culture, genetics, and evolution requiring us to dispose of notions of “nature or nurture.” Presenting scientific evidence from diverse fields, including anthropology, biology, and psychology, Fuentes devises a myth-busting toolkit to dismantle persistent fallacies about the validity of biological races, the innateness of aggression and violence, and the nature of monogamy and differences between the sexes. A final chapter plus an appendix provide a set of take-home points on how readers can myth-bust on their own. Accessible, compelling, and original, this book is a rich and nuanced account of how nature, culture, experience, and choice interact to influence human behavior.

From the Inside Flap
“Unlike advocates who promote one-cause-fits-all explanations for human behavior, Fuentes appreciates the array of influences that make us human. This book is guaranteed to give the reader a more nuanced view of who we are, and why we do what we do.”—Joel Best, author of Everyone’s a Winner and Damned Lies and Statistics

“Agustín Fuentes has established himself as an original and authoritative voice for the study of human origins. While interrogating the narrative of where we came from, the domain of both science and mythology, he explains scientific subtleties with grace and ease and successfully guides us through a confrontation with our bio-cultural nature.”—Jonathan Marks, author of What it Means to be 98% Chimpanzee

“Fuentes brings together an enormous array of information from diverse fields to counter some of the most pervasive myths about human nature in our society.” —Karen B. Strier, author of Primate Behavioral Ecology

“It is about time that an anthropologist discusses these pervasive myths of human nature and shows them to be just that: myths. Using data from across anthropology and debunking popular writings that do not account for all of the relevant literature, Fuentes does an exceptional job in deconstructing many commonly held beliefs concerning human behavior.” —Robert W. Sussman, coauthor of Man the Hunted

“Fuentes challenges us to undertake the most fundamental of self-help programs and free ourselves of harmful misconceptions about race, aggression, and sex. By approaching the study of human nature through the lens of evolution, he has produced an illuminating, refreshing, and uplifting view of humanity that is both a superb history of our species and a manual for our future.” —Nina G. Jablonski, author of Skin and Living Color

What's the point? I can't find it.
By bob
Yeah so if I could rate this a 0/5 I would. I've been having to read and report on this book for my Anthro class and I've read the whole thing and it seems to me that he NEVER EVER for NEVER EVER gets to his point. All the book does is say "these thoughts on this subject are incorrect" and then proceeds to give examples of what he finds to be incorrect but then never tells you why it is. It a pile of opinionated garbage backed up only by the author's degrees, which don't do him much justice. I feel as if I'm meant to just take his word for it. Sorry I'm not a sheep and if you want to purchase this book just know that you'll feel very unfulfilled because you'll find yourself waiting for a conclusion to any point that will come.

RMOL: A Review
By Richard Powis
For many years, influential scientists have been stepping outside of academia to remind the public that they do not need college degrees to effectively scrutinize the myths, legends, dogmas, and conspiracy theories perpetuated by pop culture. Published in 1981, Mismeasure of Man, by evolutionary biologist Stephen Jay Gould, showed us how a popular misconception about the relationship between race and intelligence was made worse by scientists with a priori knowledge and a defective version of the scientific method. In 1995, astrophysicist Carl Sagan published The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark in which he gives readers the "Baloney Detection Kit," - now famous in secular humanist communities - and uses it to dismantle claims about UFOs and alien abductions. In 2011, biologist Richard Dawkins published The Magic of Reality: How We Know What's Really True, an incredible book for the public that explains how mythological cosmologies are supplanted over time by advances in scientific knowledge. Recently, in this spirit of setting the record straight, Agustín Fuentes has made an anthropological contribution with Race, Monogamy, and Other Lies They Told You: Busting Myths About Human Nature. And who better to discuss the life-cycle of a myth than an anthropologist?

In Race, Monogamy, and other Lies, Fuentes takes on what he considers to be the three major myths about humans: biological race, human aggression, and that men and women are wired differently. The first matter of Fuentes' deconstruction revolves around his rejection of the "nature-nurture" dichotomy. Fuentes supposes that humanity is, as he coins, "naturenurtural"; a familiar concept that describes the biological and cultural influences on humanity as inseparable - and the very reason that myths about human nature are myriad. After a short introduction to basic cultural and biological concepts, Fuentes begins breaking down all manners of myths that surround the concept of race, followed by a chapter that challenges the idea that culture tames our innate beast, and finishes the myth-busting by eloquently untangling sex from gender, pair bonding from monogamy, and sexuality from sexual behavior.

Each chapter begins by introducing a set of myths surrounding a particular topic, and then proceeds by meticulously breaking each one apart by uncovering the origins of the myth, discussing studies, statistics, and misrepresentations of the truth, and in the end, why the mythological construction still has value. In the chapter titled, "Myths About Sex," for instance, Fuentes lists as a prevailing assumption that men and women are biologically different. Using examples from genetics, endocrinology, embryology, and neuroscience, he explains that while there is sexual dimorphism, we are composed of the same biological components. The sexual differential of size, for example, may be evolutionary, but biologically-speaking it means little, and it follows that we need not assume that evolution "intended" for men to use their size for sexual coercion. Fuentes closes suggesting that the myth may be wrong, but it can be used to illustrate meaningful differences between the concepts of sex and gender.

Departing from the classic conception of myth - a story that explains natural phenomena, usually in supernatural terms - Fuentes defines myths simply as a set of assumptions that we might rely upon to interpret the quotidian. The danger of myths, he warns, is the caveat: they allow us to live our lives with little need for critical inquiry, so much so that we might consider some myths to be "common sense." Not only are myths an interpretation of the everyday, but the everyday is commonplace because it goes unquestioned. Unfortunately, Fuentes leaves the origins of myths aside, other than to say that they arise as assumptions. Myth is the epistemological placeholder - it supposes an attractive model of meaning until it can be deconstructed, if not replaced entirely by a better looking model.

Fuentes has little to say about how myths are used as a form of power except when, at the end, he begins using the word "lie" which he defines as a "deliberate intent to deceive." These lies manifest when, as he says, scientific literature becomes enamored with the pursuit of "significant results", at which point they are exploited by those with something to gain - politicians and advertisers. Myths are easily constructed and arduously toppled because of those that control discourse - how many anthropologists must scream at the tops of their lungs to be heard over the Governor of Florida? - but Fuentes only glosses over this fact. If it is sociopolitical and historical context that you want, you should refer to this book's predecessors listed above (in addition to Jonathan Marks' Why I Am Not a Scientist: Anthropology and Modern Knowledge).

Overall, the book is written with undergraduates and laypeople in mind. Fuentes never seems to suggest whether or not he believes the myths he explores are universal, but one might assume from the many pop-culture references that he is referring to the Western audience to whom he is speaking. Race, Monogamy, and Other Lies lays out a crash course in anthropological thought, genetics, animal behavior, psychology, gender studies, and more. While he is careful to avoid jargon unless it is absolutely necessary, Fuentes is also sure to define that which he does use. Terms and concepts are thoroughly spelled out, but he does not undermine the reader's intellect either - many of the myths are complicated constructions of entangled values and beliefs, but Fuentes leads the way, confident that his readers are in lockstep behind him.

What I really commend is Fuentes' refusal to solely lay the burden of mythmaking in the hands of culture. Asserting that race, aggression, and sexual behavior are not hard-wired evolutionary traits is easy, as far as he is concerned; negotiating the incongruence between observed patterns and cultural assumptions is what makes the book tick. What sets this book apart from the debunkers of the past is that Fuentes masterfully maintains that myth need not be cast to the side; rather it should be reshaped into something of worth. There is value in acknowledging and discussing that, for instance, while it may be a myth that human races exist because of biology, it is not a myth that human races exist as a concept and, as a result, it affects human populations.

The book accurately sums up many of the foundation-shaking lessons of a contemporary undergraduate education in anthropology, and I think it would be valuable as required reading for lower-division anthropology students. I highly recommend this book for all levels of science and humanities students for its value in planting the seeds and fostering the growth of critical analysis. The development of those skills provides the basis for a lifetime of lie-detection and myth-busting; Fuentes should be lauded for this important contribution toward that end.

Examination and Take Down of “Conventional Thinking”
By Edwin Lyngar
Agustín Fuentes offers a take down of conventional thinking on a number of topics. If you like books that challenge conventional "wisdom" then this book is for you. I don’t understand sociology to any great extent, and as a bonus Fuentes offers the reader a primer in examining culture “from the outside” as much as is possible. The fact that every human in the planet is raised in a “culture” makes it impossible for any person to be completely unbiased.

I thought I would be most interested in the “busting” of monogamy, but Fuentes’ take down of our artificial racial divide is the thing that most stuck with me at the end of this book. Humans tend to view race as a very large, real difference between human beings, but this book pokes serious holes in that assessment. Fuentes shows that race is a minor, superficial difference between humans. This analysis alone is worth the price of the book.

I also felt that religion was needled a bit in this book, if often incidentally in several cases. I read this book as part of a Freethinking book club, and it generated a lot of passion and discussion in the membership. Worth the read.

Rallying for Immigrant Rights: The Fight for Inclusion in 21st Century AmericaFrom University of California Press

From Alaska to Florida, millions of immigrants and their supporters took to the streets across the United States to rally for immigrant rights in the spring of 2006. The scope and size of their protests, rallies, and boycotts made these the most significant events of political activism in the United States since the 1960s. This accessibly written volume offers the first comprehensive analysis of this historic moment. Perfect for students and general readers, its essays, written by a multidisciplinary group of scholars and grassroots organizers, trace the evolution and legacy of the 2006 protest movement in engaging, theoretically informed discussions. The contributors cover topics including unions, churches, the media, immigrant organizations, and immigrant politics. Today, one in eight U.S. residents was born outside the country, but for many, lack of citizenship makes political voice through the ballot box impossible. This book helps us better understand how immigrants are making their voices heard in other ways.

For botanists
By Cascadian
Given that it's regarded as the best book on plants for the Bay area, I had hoped for a book more like Plants of the Pacific Northwest. This is mostly text--plant keys--and line drawings of plants. There is a small section of color photos. This book would appeal to botanists.
