The Secular Commedia: Comic Mimesis in Late Eighteenth-Century Music (Ernest Bloch Lectures), by Wye Jamison Allanbrook

Wye Jamison Allanbrook’s The Secular Commedia is a stimulating and original rethinking of the music of the late eighteenth century. Hearing the symphonies and concertos of Haydn and Mozart with an ear tuned to operatic style, as their earliest listeners did, Allanbrook shows that this familiar music is built on a set of mimetic associations drawn from conventional modes of depicting character and emotion in opera buffa. Allanbrook mines a rich trove of writings by eighteenth-century philosophers and music theorists to show that vocal music was considered aesthetically superior to instrumental music and that listeners easily perceived the theatrical tropes that underpinned the style. Tracing Enlightenment notions of character and expression back to Greek and Latin writings about comedy and drama, she strips away preoccupations with symphonic form and teleology to reveal anew the kaleidoscopic variety and gestural vitality of the musical surface. In prose as graceful and nimble as the music she discusses, Allanbrook elucidates the idiom of this period for contemporary readers. With notes, musical examples, and a foreword by editors Mary Ann Smart and Richard Taruskin.

Review
"Consistently accessible, quick-witted and amusing . . . One must be grateful to Smart and Taruskin for asserting the virtues of scholarly community by taking up Wendy Allanbrook s unfinished opus and delivering it to the world."--W. Dean Sutcliffe"Early Music" (11/01/2015)"

From the Inside Flap
“This book is rich, beautifully written, and comprehensive. It is both an expression of Wendy Allanbrook’s lifework and a position statement on the meaning, importance, and proper approach to the music of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. Kudos to Mary Ann Smart and Richard Taruskin for helping this book see the light of day.”
Mary Hunter, author of The Culture of Opera Buffa in Mozart's Vienna

“The Secular Commedia is a formidably informed pledge to the teeming surface of Classic music, to ethos as action, to mimesis as mainspring, and to the vernacular glories of the Western comic spirit. Ringing changes on centuries of cultural history, Allanbrook sounds the full resonant plenitude of her argument.”
Scott Burnham, author of Mozart’s Grace

“The Secular Commedia offers a game-changing account of later eighteenth-century instrumental music. Focusing on topics—musical gestures packed with historical and stylistic meaning—Wye Jamison Allanbrook opens up entirely new perspectives on musical variation, performance, notions of voice and embodiment, and more. Her discussion of eighteenth-century aesthetics and pedagogy, as well as their classical antecedents, is equally original and provocative. This book has the potential to shift the very foundations of scholarship on Haydn and Mozart.”
Richard Will, author of The Characteristic Symphony in the Age of Haydn and Beethoven

This is the most important book about music in years. It took a long time to wait for its completion and sadly the author is no longer with us. Now that it is available, it becomes clear that Allanbrook offers a totally new view on music history and its connections with the long history of western thinking and culture. Indispensable reading for all music lovers.

From the Inside Flap
"This superlative collaboration between author and translator has produced the very best kind of cookbook: authoritative but exciting, scholarly but racily written—everything the cook or scholar wants to know about the traditional food of the region around Rome.” —Paul Levy, editor of The Penguin Book of Food and Drink

“Oretta Zanini and Maureen Fant are the very two experts I would consult first with any question on Roman cuisine, and this product of their collaboration is as rich and complex as a classic coda alla vaccinara (their recipe for which happens to be delicious). The breadth of information presented here is impressive and the selection of recipes refreshingly authentic, including intestines, heart, sweetbreads, and other delicacies of the quinto quarto so often left out of books on Rome published outside of Italy. At a time when Tuscany and Sicily occupy so much space in our collective Italian fantasies, it’s a pleasure to have a definitive exploration of Roman cuisine to put on the shelf or bring into the kitchen.” —Mitchell Davis, The James Beard Foundation

"Zanini has written a fascinating profile of a region of Italy almost unknown to Americans--and that's strange because it's the region of the country’s best-known city, Rome. But Lazio and the Roman countryside remain a terra incognita despite their rich history and very rich culinary culture, all of which helped make Rome the center of the universe for many centuries and a place of endless enchantment to this day. Here are dishes that have traversed the ages and flavors that once beguiled Caesar just as they do modern tourists. Zanini provides astute analysis of how and why Romans and the people of Lazio eat what they do--and moreover, she gives us recipes so we can try them in our own kitchens." —Nancy Harmon Jenkins, author of The Essential Mediterranean: How Regional Cooks Transform Key Ingredients into the World’s Favorite Cuisines

About the Author
Oretta Zanini De Vita is a distinguished Italian food historian. She is the author of more than forty books on Italian food and its traditions, including Encyclopedia of Pasta (UC Press).

Complex story well told
By Autamme_dot_com
Gastronomes and historians alike might like this book, considering the rich diversity of food that has kept generations of Romans fed over time.

Looking at the food of Rome and the region of Lazio, the author takes the reader on a complete tour, evaluating the landscape that contributes to food diversity and the gradual changes and development that followed along with changes in society and lifestyles. Fish once played a key role in the typical Roman diet, thanks to the flowing River Tiber dispensing fish for everyone. Yet changes to Rome to make it the capital of Italy emasculated the river and the fishing industry leading to an irrevocable culinary change.

Of course, other ingredients such as pasta, olive oil, ricotta, lamb and pork play a key role in everyday foods, yet it is interesting to track the changing availability of ingredients over time, their impact on dishes and the mark left on society as a whole. The author has carefully wove an interesting story that speeds through the centuries at a leisurely pace (sic). Even modern day inhabitants of Rome may not recognise their city, as experienced by their ancestors.

Changes come and go, different cultures fuse and merge into the mainstream and a gradual cosmopolitan veneer affects everyday Roman life. This book is written in an academic style with the customary additional notes and a detailed bibliography at the end. Yet this is an academic book with a difference, featuring over 250 authentic, easy-to-follow recipes that can be reproduced in any kitchen. It would have, however, been nice to have had some photographs of the dishes, even if it had to be in a centrefold spread sorted by recipe number. A book of recipes, particularly when many of them may not be familiar, just seems incomplete without it. Even though this is not just a book of recipes, it would have made a difference. As it is, the recipes are well-laid out, easy to read and contain all of the key information required (with the exception of an estimated preparation and cooking time - something we complain about with most books we see!). So the lack of photographs is a curious omission.

At the end of the book there is a detailed glossary of terms and ingredients which was an interesting, welcome addition and there should be a detailed index of recipes and a general index (but these were not present in this review copy) so an opinion as to their depth and quality cannot be offered. The overall layout of this book suits an academic work but with the addition of all of these recipes, perhaps it would have been in order to have worked on the design a little to make it more "user friendly". In a kitchen, slabs of closely-printed single font text is not the best way to present a detailed, involved recipe.

This book manages to execute a comprehensive subject well, despite the foregoing complaints and observations, and this was a welcome surprise to be sure. As a book for the general reader with an interest in Italian food, maybe this needs a bit more polish. As it is, you perhaps need to be a bit more dedicated and devoted to the subject to fully embrace this book. It won't grab the casual browser - and when you consider what they are potentially missing out on, that is a big, big shame.

I particularly like that the focus of this book is on the Lazio region of Italy. The first part of the book has a nice history of the region that I found very interesting...then it moves to the recipes...haven't tried any of them yet, but will.

a beautiful addition to my cooking/Italian culture library
By Diana P.
There is such a bounty of information here for anyone with roots in or simply curious about the Lazio region and Rome. The recipes are simple and true to their regional roots: some ingredients are not accessible to the American reader (veal lung, for example), but they are honest recipes that reflect a real place and that is exactly what I was wanting. Of course, there are plenty of recipes that are simple to make no matter the country from which you are. Ultimately, a beautiful addition to my cooking/Italian culture library. Written and translated with integrity. If you love cooking AND history, this will pique your interest.

The life story of Ishi, the Yahi Indian, lone survivor of a doomed tribe, is unique in the annals of North American anthropology. For more than forty years, Theodora Kroeber's biography has been sharing this tragic and absorbing drama with readers all over the world.

Ishi stumbled into the twentieth century on the morning of August 29, 1911, when, desperate with hunger and with terror of the white murderers of his family, he was found in the corral of a slaughter house near Oroville, California. Finally identified as an Indian by an anthropologist, Ishi was brought to San Francisco by Professor T. T. Waterman and lived there the rest of his life under the care and protection of Alfred Kroeber and the staff of the University of California's Museum of Anthropology.

The last free Native American in California
By Peggy Vincent
This book is one of two I routinely give to people who move to northern California. The other one is The Ohlone Way, by Malcolm Margolin. Ishi was the lone survivor of a doomed tribe of Yahi Indians on the slopes of Mt. Lassen. Other members of his tribe were murdered by a planned campaign of genocide during the settling of the West. When Ishi stumbled out of the hills of his birth in 1911, he landed in the 20th Century, huddled in the corner of a cattle corral on a ranch, dressed in rags, starving, desperately lonely, and probably certain he would be killed. Instead, a wise sheriff in Oroville called on some anthropologists from Univ of CA in Berkeley, and Ishi eventually came under the benevolent but somewhat demeaning (he was made the centerpiece of a museum exhibit) protection of Alfred Kroeber. It is Kroeber's wife who wrote this touching, heartwarming, illuminating and ultimately tragic history of Ishi's life in the 'modern' world.
Most moving for me was a long middle section that recounted a magical summer when Ishi took Kroeber and his teenage son back to Mt. Lassen and showed them his native territory. They lived together as unspoiled and free Native Americans for the summer, hunting deer, swimming in cold streams, living in huts and caves, building fires, making bows and arrows... An experience that was destined never to be repeated.
Wonderful archival photographs supplement the imminently readable text.
Don't miss this very special and quintessentially Californian piece of history. But there's no rush: this book is destined to remain in print forever.

Best book I've read this year
By David Graham
Imagine this: it's the 20th century, we have electricity, movies, telephones, trains, cars, the latest audio recording devices, indoor plumbing, and access to the usual luxuries and amenities of our western world. Then one day - here in the United States, out of our own country - a man appears out of the wilderness, almost magically transferred from the stone age to the steel age. Truth is said to be stranger than fiction, and the story of Ishi is one such example. Ishi was the last of the Yahi Indians, living in Northern California under a cloak of fear, secrecy, and evasion from white men, carrying on this lifestyle for the better part of four decades. In this thoroughly researched book, Theodora Kroeber tells Ishi's story. She covers the historical and geographical background of the Yahi Indians, how their lives began to change and their numbers decimated with the coming of the caucasions in the mid- 19th century, and how Ishi and the few remaining people of his tribe lived until Ishi was the last one left. She then tells us about the man himself, the last (happy) five years of his life in San Francisco, and the adjustments and learning Ishi went through in his new home. The author does a superb job of comparing and contrasting Ishi's stone age world with the steel age world, without the tedious prose often involved in such writing. This book is highly readable and strongly recommended.

Twentieth Century Time Traveler
By Plume45
This poignant portrayal of the most dramatic culture clash in American history reads like a literary bio-drama. Theodora Kroeber's exhaustive research and respectful treatment of aboriginal heritage provide accurate details of a successful Indian culture, which so-called Civilization had effaced from the earth by 1911. Starting with the geology and anthropology of the Yana and Yahi tribes (north of San Francisco Bay), she recreates their vanished lifstyle.
Part One describes the relatively peaceful existence of local native American tribes who learned to coexist both with Nature and each other. But the advent of the white man destroyed the fragile ecological and social balance which had existed for centuries, as Yankees and Hispanics gradually encroached on Indian territory--scorning their customs as "savage." Ishi's tribe was hated and ultimately hunted into extinction. Himself the last survivor, he staggered into a frontier town, gaunt, ragged and in mourning-- expecting instant death. Having lost touch with the last human beings who understood his pre-Columbian world, he had nothing to live for.
Part Two compassionately depicts his amazing metamorphosis from the last wild man to Mr. Ishi. He never revealed his true Indian name to any white man, but accepted the generic word, "Ishi" as his new name which simply means, Man. He emerges as a surprisingly gentle person, who adapted successfully to life in the modern world. Making friends with selected Americans, learning to live and almost thrive in the municipal jungle, he earned respect and admiration for his "primitive" skills. In fact Ishi left indelible memories upon those who were privileged to know him well and enjoy his company. His sentimental jouurney back into his past and former territory was well documented in photographs and (now disintegrated) film. What a privilege it must have been to observe this calm and dignified man demonstrate lost customs and survival skills.
From warrior to janitor/custodian this honorable man maintined his human dignity in all aspects of 20th century life, until his untimely death from TB five years later. In fact Ishi-made artifacts are treasured in Bay Area museums. One wonders if we of the modern world could adapt so well or philosophically to conditions so foreign as a trip through generations of Western achievement; how would we cope if we were transported forward in time by several centuries? Ishi adapted with grace and courtesy, inadvertantly causing us to wonder who the real "savages" are/were. But this book is not a racist guilt trip--rather it proves a personal odyssey which can teach and touch us all.

To Overcome Oneself: The Jesuit Ethic and Spirit of Global Expansion, 1520-1767, by J. Michelle Molina

To Overcome Oneself offers a novel retelling of the emergence of the Western concept of “modern self,” demonstrating how the struggle to forge a self was enmeshed in early modern Catholic missionary expansion. Examining the practices of Catholics in Europe and New Spain from the 1520s through the 1760s, the book treats Jesuit techniques of self-formation, namely spiritual exercises and confessional practices, and the relationships between spiritual directors and their subjects. Catholics on both sides of the Atlantic were folded into a dynamic that shaped new concepts of self and, in the process, fueled the global Catholic missionary movement. Molina historicizes Jesuit meditation and narrative self-reflection as modes of self-formation that would ultimately contribute to a new understanding of religion as something private and personal, thereby overturning long-held concepts of personhood, time, space, and social reality. To Overcome Oneself demonstrates that it was through embodied processes that humans have come to experience themselves as split into mind and body. Notwithstanding the self-congratulatory role assigned to “consciousness” in the Western intellectual tradition, early moderns did not think themselves into thinking selves. Rather, “the self” was forged from embodied efforts to transcend self. Yet despite a discourse that situates self as interior, the actual fuel for continued self-transformation required an object-cum-subject—someone else to transform. Two constant questions throughout the book are: Why does the effort to know and transcend self require so many others? And what can we learn about the inherent intersubjectivity of missionary colonialism?

From the Inside Flap
“To Overcome Oneself is a deeply creative study—methodologically innovative and adventurous. Molina accomplishes the challenge of re-reading the ‘origins of the modern self’ by moving the stage away from Britain, France, Germany and the United States. In this study, the modern self was born in cities and humble hamlets somewhere in Mexico, Spain and Italy. This work is destined to be influential as well as controversial.” —Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra, author of Puritan Conquistadors: Iberianizing the Atlantic, 1550-1700

"To Overcome Oneself is a brilliant interpretation of early Jesuit spirituality and practice that moves impressively across geographic and subfield boundaries. With great verve and style, Molina both establishes herself as an important voice in this field and makes an important contribution to our understanding of early modern globalization and subjectivity." —Matthew O'Hara, University of California, Santa Cruz

Terroir and Other Myths of Winegrowing, by Mark A. Matthews

Wine is a traditional product with traditional explanations. Oft-romanticized, Old World notions of how to create fine wine have been passed down through generations and continue to dominate popular discussions of wine quality. However, many of these beliefs predate science and remain isolated from advances in the understanding of how crops grow and fruit ripens. Allegiance to them has frequently impeded open-minded investigation into how grapevines interact with the environment, thus limiting innovation in winegrowing.

In Terroir and Other Myths of Winegrowing, Mark A. Matthews applies a scientist’s skepticism and scrutiny to examine widely held beliefs about viticulture. Is terroir primarily a marketing ploy that obscures understanding of which environments really produce the best wine? Is reducing yield an imperative for high quality grapes and wine? What does it mean to have vines that are balanced or grapes that are physiologically mature? Matthews explores and dissects these and other questions to debunk the myths of winegrowing that may be holding us back from achieving a higher wine quality.

Review
"I came away from reading Matthews essay on terroir more thoroughly convinced than ever that the idea of 'terroir' is likely the most abused and often most useless word in the world of wine. . . . 'Terroir and Other Myths of Winegrowing' is a book that is well worth reading, particularly by those who work in the wine industry either in the vineyard, in the cellar or in marketing."--Tom Wark"Fermentation: The Daily Wine Blog" (04/04/2016)"

From the Inside Flap
“Mark Matthews’ quest to uncover the truth about our cherished beliefs about wine is provoking, stimulating, and full of fresh insights—read it and rethink your terroir!”—Markus Keller, author of The Science of Grapevines

“Matthews’ book flays, or in some instances eviscerates, common tenets of today’s viticulture and enology. This book should be required reading for all students of vine and wine, whether researcher, producer, or pundit.”—Sara E. Spayd, Professor/Extension Viticulturist at North Carolina State University

The science of "winegroing"
By Amazon Customer
One of the best review of how plant physiology affect wine quality. It is not a mystery shrouded in words such complexity and balance but can be investigated like most other things. Yes there is mystery and romance in wine but these are not objective measures of wine quality or of the grape growing factors that influence those measures.

A easy read - not overly technical - but also not simplistic. You need to have some education to appreciate this book.

Terroir as understood by most folks not a "myth" (and the author obviously knows that)
By Terroirist
This guy obviously has an axe to grind concerning the occasional misuse and misunderstanding of the term "terroir". Terroir as the vast majority of the world understands it is "the effects on a wine produced by the physical environment in which the grapes from which it was derived are grown". To suggest that climate has no effect on wine is to deny vintage variation as well, and no one that knows anything about wine would view vinatge variation as mythical. The title seems obviously designed to provoke controversy and hype the book. Even the author concludes that if terroir means anything other than dirt (which it obviously does) then he prefers the term "wine geography" - and I guess wine geography is not mythological?

Distant Strangers: How Britain Became Modern (Berkeley Series in British Studies), by James Vernon

What does it mean to live in the modern world? How different is that world from those that preceded it, and when did we become modern?

In Distant Strangers, James Vernon argues that the world was made modern not by revolution, industrialization, or the Enlightenment. Instead, he shows how in Britain, a place long held to be the crucible of modernity, a new and distinctly modern social condition emerged by the middle of the nineteenth century. Rapid and sustained population growth, combined with increasing mobility of people over greater distances and concentrations of people in cities, created a society of strangers.

Vernon explores how individuals in modern societies adapted to live among strangers by forging more abstract and anonymous economic, social, and political relations, as well as by reanimating the local and the personal.

Evolution's Wedge: Competition and the Origins of Diversity (Organisms and Environments), by David W. Pfennig, Karin S. Pfennig

Evolutionary biology has long sought to explain how new traits and new species arise. Darwin maintained that competition is key to understanding this biodiversity and held that selection acting to minimize competition causes competitors to become increasingly different, thereby promoting new traits and new species. Despite Darwin’s emphasis, competition’s role in diversification remains controversial and largely underappreciated.

In their synthetic and provocative book, evolutionary ecologists David and Karin Pfennig explore competition's role in generating and maintaining biodiversity. The authors discuss how selection can lessen resource competition or costly reproductive interactions by promoting trait evolution through a process known as character displacement. They further describe character displacement’s underlying genetic and developmental mechanisms. The authors then consider character displacement’s myriad downstream effects, ranging from shaping ecological communities to promoting new traits and new species and even fueling large-scale evolutionary trends. Drawing on numerous studies from natural populations, and written for a broad audience, Evolution’s Wedge seeks to inspire future research into character displacement’s many implications for ecology and evolution.

From the Inside Flap
“The A to Z of character displacement, an exemplary mixture of explanation and inspiration.” –Peter R. Grant, Princeton University, author of How and Why Species Multiply

"Though there have been a handful of volumes that cover the importance of competition to biological diversity in the past decade, none has so succinctly reviewed the entire field while also delving into speculative but highly innovative and biologically meaningful digressions regarding the role of competition in areas such as phenotypic plasticity, speciation, and macroevolution. The book will be an excellent addition to every biologist’s library." –Ryan Calsbeek, Dartmouth College

“This book does an excellent job of conveying both the current state of knowledge of character displacement and also the areas where more research is needed. It will be a valuable resource for students and researchers interested in the evolutionary processes generating and maintaining biological diversity.”

Gregory F. Grether, University of California, Los Angeles
