Making Chastity Sexy: The Rhetoric of Evangelical Abstinence Campaigns, by Christine J. Gardner

Even though they are immersed in sex-saturated society, millions of teens are pledging to remain virgins until their wedding night. How are evangelical Christians persuading young people to wait until marriage? Christine J. Gardner looks closely at the language of the chastity movement and discovers a savvy campaign that uses sex to “sell” abstinence. Drawing from interviews with evangelical leaders and teenagers, she examines the strategy to shift from a negative “just say no” approach to a positive one: “just say yes” to great sex within marriage. Making Chastity Sexy sheds new light on an abstinence campaign that has successfully recast a traditionally feminist idea—“my body, my choice”—into a powerful message, but one that Gardner suggests may ultimately reduce evangelicalism’s transformative power. Focusing on the United States, her study also includes a comparative dimension by examining the export of this evangelical agenda to sub-Saharan Africa.

From the Inside Flap
“Students of rhetoric should appreciate Making Chastity Sexy for the sophistication of its argument about 'counter-public' advocacy. Others will welcome it for keen insights about the recent history of American evangelicals and, even more, Christine Gardner's striking comparisons between chastity rhetoric in the United States and in East Africa.”—Mark Noll, author of The New Shape of World Christianity: How American Experience Reflects Global Faith

“Christine Gardner has written a terrific book that moves beyond tired survey research-based studies to give us a rich and engaging in-depth analysis of the language through which evangelical abstinence movements attempt to persuade teenagers to refrain from having sex. We learn not only about programs in the United States but also in Africa where abstinence has been advocated to prevent HIV/AIDS. Making Chastity Sexy shows clearly the power of rhetoric – and its unanticipated consequences.” —Robert Wuthnow, Princeton University

"Written in an engaging, often journalistic style, Making Chastity Sexy offers compelling insight into the rhetorical strategies of contemporary evangelical sexual abstinence campaigns and illuminates a remarkable variety of responses to these campaigns by teens and young adults." —Angela G. Ray, Associate Professor of Communication Studies, Northwestern University

Making Chastity Sexy
By C. Kent
If we are fish, and our culture is the water we swim in, Christine Gardner may have jumped out of the fish bowl to give us a candid examination of the culture of evangelical abstinence campaigns in Making Chastity Sexy. Her work explores the rhetoric that is used to promote abstinence among evangelical youth, both in the United States and in sub-Saharan Africa. By examining the ways that evangelicals both appropriate secular culture and seek to go against it, Gardner reveals the strengths and weaknesses created in young people's understandings of abstinence, sex, and purity.
Published this year, the book includes research done within the past decade wherein contemporary evangelical and secular cultures have explored new ways of talking about sex and sexuality. In the secular world, the epidemic of HIV/AIDS and the rise in teen pregnancy have spurred discussion on how to talk to teens about sex. Evangelicals have answered this with a call to abstinence. In her research, Gardner has sought to understand the ways that evangelical abstinence campaigns are redefining abstinence to convince young people to forgo sex until marriage. She discovered an evangelical culture that emphasizes individualistic incentives (such as better sex in the future or avoiding disease) in exchange for sexual purity. Both in the United States and sub-Saharan Africa, personal agency had to be redefined to make the call to abstinence relevant to young people. However, there was a difference in the ultimate motives and methods of abstinence in the different contexts. In America, playing to a highly individualistic culture, abstinence was sold as self-preservation, as a way of ensuring better sex later (51). In Africa, where "later" is never guaranteed, abstinence gained force as a call to obey God and as an expression of true faith in Christ (161).
Gardner successfully uses a combination of personal interviews and careful observations to give a glimpse into the ways that modern evangelicals are defining and redefining the call to abstain. She uses the comparison of abstinence campaigns in two distinct social contexts to shine light on the successes and shortcomings of each method. However, it would have added to her argument if she had expanded her evaluation to better include the ways that these separate understandings are influencing each other, if at all, rather than just giving a comparison between them.
Despite this, Gardner gives a balanced and well-informed description of how contemporary evangelicals are appropriating secular methods to promote abstinence. She acknowledges the strength that this gives their arguments, while at the same time pointing out the way it may eventually weaken them. Her study of evangelical rhetoric is timely and well-delivered, especially in a religious culture struggling to define itself both for itself and the world.

Making Chastity Sexy: Abstinence at the Expense of the Gospel?
By nhartmann
Christine J. Gardner, a Christian herself, approaches the American abstinence movement with a critical eye. Drawing from the observations of three American abstinence campaigns and the methods and narratives they adopt, she asserts that these campaigns have worked to re-brand abstinence as something sexy.

By inserting pop culture into the campaign, Christian evangelical groups have successfully made chastity desirable for millions of teens who now pledge to remain virgins until marriage. The movement sells abstinence by focusing its attention on sex within the bounds of marriage, a traditionally Biblical notion. While this is an effective strategy to attract teens, Gardner also warns that the argument "subtly shifts the nature of evangelicalism away from sacrifice and suffering to self-gratification" (p 18). Because the movement has co-opted the secular culture to appeal to a greater majority, not just Christians, Gardner's observations reveal the problems teens face when striving for Biblical abstinence without fully committing themselves to Christ first. Are Christian groups doing good by drawing so many teens to a chaste sexiness, or do they promote abstinence at the expense of the Gospel?

Making Chastity Sexy
By Heather Kaufmann
In her book, Gardner offers us a highly sophisticated, in-depth critique of the phenomenon of American evangelical abstinence campaigns. She challenges the methods these campaigners use to "sell chastity," namely by selling great sex (later). Rather than center its message on a Biblical standard of God's commandment that we abstain from sex outside the bounds of marriage, it hones in on the much more secular view that all good things come to those who wait. An evangelical Christian herself, Gardner gives a compelling critique of an occurrence within her own culture, causing us to think critically about the way we approach the issue of abstinence.

"Overall, the evangelical abstinence campaigns do not address the challenges of singleness," she says, "or homosexuality" and they "present a limited and distorted view that marriage is all about self-fulfilling sex" (13). By promising great sex later, evangelical abstinence campaigns fail to address or even recognize the fact that not all people marry nor are fulfilled by sex. But Gardner acknowledges another approach in her study of abstinence rhetoric in Kenya and Rwanda, where "young people emphasize that pleasing God is an end in itself" (20). The key difference here is a cultural one, the difference between the value of freedom and the value of duty, reminding us that we are always limited by the culture we live in. This makes Gardner's book a particularly relevant and worthwhile read as it challenges our treatment of abstinence and calls us back to what the Scriptures really tell us.

Boreal Birds of North America: A Hemispheric View of Their Conservation Links and Significance (Studies in Avian Biology)From University

Reaching from interior Alaska across Canada to Labrador and Newfoundland, North America’s boreal forest is the largest wilderness area left on the planet. It is critical habitat for billions of birds; more than 300 species regularly breed there. After the breeding season, many boreal birds migrate to seasonal habitats across the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. This volume brings together new research on boreal bird biology and conservation. It highlights the importance of the region to the global avifauna and to the connectivity between the boreal forest and ecoregions throughout the Americas. The contributions showcase a unique set of perspectives on the migration, wintering ecology, and conservation of bird communities that are tied to the boreal forest in ways that may not have been previously considered.

Your ideas about where those migrant and wintering birds in your backyards have come from will be forever changed after you read this.”--Gordon Orians, Professor Emeritus of Biology, University of Washington

“One of the planet's most amazing spectacles is the seasonal ebb and flow of migrants from the boreal forests to warmer winter quarters, with stopovers in our neighborhoods in between. This book tells you how connected the world is and what's at risk if we damage any part of it.”--Stuart Pimm, Doris Duke Professor of Conservation Ecology, Duke University, winner of the 2006 Dr. A. H. Heineken Prize

“This diverse set of contributions about birds that nest in and migrate to and from North America's boreal forest demonstrates the remarkable interconnectedness of ecosystems across the hemispheres and the incredible responsibility we face to protect them.”--Bridget Stutchbury, York University, author of Silence of the Songbirds and The Private Lives of Birds

“The fact that billions of birds breed in North America’s boreal forest is amazing enough, but this assemblage is even more remarkable when understood as playing completely different, major ecological roles across the temperate and tropical Americas during the northern winter. This book definitely will broaden your thinking about ecological connections across the hemisphere and the global-scale phenomenon that crosses our skies twice each year.”--John W. Fitzpatrick, Louis Agassiz Fuertes Director, Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Migra!: A History of the U.S. Border Patrol (American Crossroads), by Kelly Lytle Hernandez

This is the untold history of the United States Border Patrol from its beginnings in 1924 as a small peripheral outfit to its emergence as a large professional police force. To tell this story, Kelly Lytle Hernández dug through a gold mine of lost and unseen records stored in garages, closets, an abandoned factory, and in U.S. and Mexican archives. Focusing on the daily challenges of policing the borderlands and bringing to light unexpected partners and forgotten dynamics, Migra! reveals how the U.S. Border Patrol translated the mandate for comprehensive migration control into a project of policing Mexicans in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands.

Definitely worth reading
By ec
This book is a very informative overview of the creation of the US border, with it's small and unorganized beginnings all the way through to the more modern concept that we understand as 'border patrolling'. The text is easy to read but filled with documentation and historical evidence. Lyttle does an amazing job at flushing out some of the economic, social, and global affairs that led to the focus of the US borders on the Mexican side, as well as the reactions and role of the Mexican Government. Without a doubt a worthwhile read that offers a much needed perspective on the history of immigration in the US.

Must read for people interested in immigration
By academicgirl
I think that Migra! is one of the most through and interesting books discussing the policies around the U.S.-Mexican border. Not only does she discuss the U.S. border patrol, she discusses how the relationship between the U.S. and Mexico largely impacted the practices and policies of the U.S. It's both fascinating and well-written as well as delving into the complex interplay between policy and enforcement.

Border Patrol, violence, and race
By Bradley Nelson
This book titles itself as a study of the US Border Patrol. It is that, but in a complex way. It studies the first 50 years of the USBP, but primarily examines the migration of Mexicans into the US and efforts to control it. Hernandez has written an interesting and compelling book about how the USBP originated as a fairly local organization that used a lot of violence to do its work. As it grew and transformed, it became more complex, changed tactics, and often had varying missions. This book also chronicles the changing and complex attitudes towards Mexican migrants in Texas and California. Many farmers wanted Mexicans for cheap labor, while most lower-income people opposed their impact on wages. The USBP fit into all of that, often at war with both migrants and farmers.

The book itself could have benefited from a better editor. A few areas were repetitive or poorly organized, but the reading itself is nonetheless interesting. This is not a casual read, certainly intended for an academic audience. But those who are highly interested in immigration and Border Patrol issues will find this a worthwhile read.

A landmark book that has been long overdue.
By Manny Rubio
The book fulfills my expectations. Unfortunately, the price will dissuade many potential buyers. It should be in the library of any student in North American Herpetology.

John Legler and John Vogt (two of the most knowledgeable chelonian herpetologists in North America) have produced a very good monograph on land and fresh water turtles of this long overlooked region. The expansive bibliography demonstrates that similar information is (only) obtainable by searching a plethora of miscellaneous sources. No doubt it will be "the book on Mexican turtles" for many years to come. One would hope that continuing research combined with input from active Mexican herpetologists will bring a revised and expanded edition which includes salt water forms.

California is globally renowned for its biological diversity, including its wealth of unique, or endemic, species. Many reasons have been cited to explain this abundance: the complex geology and topography of its landscape, the special powers of its Mediterranean-type climate, and the historic and modern barriers to the wider dispersal of its flora and fauna. Plant and Animal Endemism in California compiles and synthesizes a wealth of data on this singular subject, providing new and updated lists of native species, comparing patterns and causes of both plant and animal endemism, and interrogating the classic explanations proposed for the state’s special significance in light of new molecular evidence. Susan Harrison also offers a summary of the innovative tools that have been developed and used in California to conserve and protect this stunning and imperiled diversity.

Review
"A valuable reference."--Steven Janssens"Botanic Garden Meise" (01/01/2015)

From the Inside Flap
"In this splendid book, Susan Harrison not only describes the remarkable diversity of unique plants and animals found throughout California, but she also explores how that uniqueness has developed over millions of years. Packed with novel insights gained from decades of extensive field research, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding and conserving the biodiversity of California. You will come away with a fresh perspective on why these ecosystems are so special."

—John N. Thompson, Distinguished Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of California, Santa Cruz

"Although California is well known as a global hotspot of endemism and biodiversity, surprisingly there has been no single comprehensive overview of its plants and animals—until now. Susan Harrison has filled this gap with a welcome synthesis that nicely addresses the nexus between endemism, biological diversity, and the conservation challenges inherent in preserving this unique flora and fauna in an era of global environmental change."

—Phil Rundel, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, UCLA

Creating a Common Polity: Religion, Economy, and Politics in the Making of the Greek Koinon, by Emily Mackil

In the ancient Greece of Pericles and Plato, the polis, or city-state, reigned supreme, but by the time of Alexander, nearly half of the mainland Greek city-states had surrendered part of their autonomy to join the larger political entities called koina. In the first book in fifty years to tackle the rise of these so-called Greek federal states, Emily Mackil charts a complex, fascinating map of how shared religious practices and long-standing economic interactions faciliated political cooperation and the emergence of a new kind of state. Mackil provides a detailed historical narrative spanning five centuries to contextualize her analyses, which focus on the three best-attested areas of mainland Greece—Boiotia, Achaia, and Aitolia. The analysis is supported by a dossier of Greek inscriptions, each text accompanied by an English translation and commentary.

"A model of what scholarship in ancient history should ideally be: technically impeccable, theoretically bold and imaginative, rigorously argued, and not least a pleasure for both experts and novices to read."--Barbara Weiden Boyd, Chair"Society for Classical Studies" (12/11/2015)"

From the Inside Flap
"Well-informed and beautifully written, Creating a Common Polity represents a turning point in our approach to the political and economic life of the ancient world. It should attract readers far beyond the field of classics, particularly political scientists, who will find in this volume a mine of new data and analyses to conceptualize the formation of federal states."

Alain Bresson, author of L'économie de la Grèce des cités

"This is an excellent and very important study. Mackil is one of the most thorough, brilliant and accomplished Greek historians of her generation, and the book will be a ground-breaker."
