When I Wear My Alligator Boots: Narco-Culture in the U.S. Mexico Borderlands (California Series in Public Anthropology), by Shaylih Muehlm

When I Wear My Alligator Boots examines how the lives of dispossessed men and women are affected by the rise of narcotrafficking along the U.S.-Mexico border. In particular, the book explores a crucial tension at the heart of the “war on drugs”: despite the violence and suffering brought on by drug cartels, for the rural poor in Mexico’s north, narcotrafficking offers one of the few paths to upward mobility and is a powerful source of cultural meanings and local prestige.

In the borderlands, traces of the drug trade are everywhere: from gang violence in cities to drug addiction in rural villages, from the vibrant folklore popularized in the narco-corridos of Norteña music to the icon of Jesús Malverde, the “patron saint” of narcos, tucked beneath the shirts of local people. In When I Wear My Alligator Boots, the author explores the everyday reality of the drug trade by living alongside its low-level workers, who live at the edges of the violence generated by the militarization of the war on drugs. Rather than telling the story of the powerful cartel leaders, the book focuses on the women who occasionally make their sandwiches, the low-level businessmen who launder their money, the addicts who consume their products, the mules who carry their money and drugs across borders, and the men and women who serve out prison sentences when their bosses' operations go awry.

From the Author
This book is my second sole-authored work focusing on the lives of men and women living in northern Mexico. My first book "Where the River Ends" was published with Duke University Press and is also available on Amazon.

From the Inside Flap
"This book is a rare gem. In contrast to today's often overheated and sensationalized accounts of "drug cartels" and "kingpins," Shaylih Muehlmann instead draws our attention to the too-often overlooked stories of the ordinary people at the margins of the drug economy in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. Through fearless ethnographic research, she exposes the real "trenches" of the drug war along the border."—Peter Andreas, author of Smuggler Nation: How Illicit Trade Made America

“This is an outstanding book . . . deeply moving in parts and simply fascinating in others. It makes clear interventions, but in a language that a general readership would enjoy even as scholars will assign this book in their classes.”—Alexander Dawson, author of First World Dreams: Mexico Since 1989

“This work provides an original and incredibly important contribution to a wide body of literature on the drug war, and particularly the escalation of drug war violence over the past decade.”—Adrienne Pine, author of Working Hard, Drinking Hard: On Violence and Survival in Honduras

Compassionate, Thoughtful, and Thought-provoking
By Sheila
I was fascinated to read, in this book, such compelling stories of people, families, and communities involved directly or indirectly in the narco-culture in the US-Mexico border area. The author's connection to and compassion for the people she has known for years, while doing research, helps her to paint portraits of real people, ordinary people, who are caught up in circumstances more complex and complicated than are commonly known. Her description of how hard people work to create lives for themselves and their families, how difficult it is to remain detached from all aspects of narcotrafficking, and how devastating the effects of those who fall prey to drug addiction are both respectful and insightful. I appreciated the book's interesting juxtaposition of scholarly comments, academic references and personal observations; the book made me think and some of the most thought-provoking elements were provided by conversations and interactions that could only have happened between people who know and respect each other. I will be recommending this book to my college library and our social science faculty.

A very interesting read
By TDVA
Muehlmann reports from a front line of the so-called "War on Drugs" -- but a front line we rarely even glimpse in newspapers or other media outlets. While living with the wives, girlfriends, and daughters of the foot soldiers of the Mexican cartels, Muehlmann gives us firsthand stories of their lives and struggles as well as an account of her own transformation as she discovers the betrayals and challenges that shape these women's lives. It's a very interesting read, a totally different and detailed (and personal) take on a war that is all too often reduced to mere rhetoric and/or thinly researched reportage. Recommended!

A Memorable Book
By Ann McLaughlin
_When I Wear My Alligator Boots_ is a surprise of a book. It's compassionate and informative and introduces us to the people and landscape that are part of the 'drug culture' and 'drug war' that we hear so much about. The book presents a human story and, with it, uncomfortable situations and issues. This book and its people stay with the reader and leave a strong impression.

Golden Holocaust: Origins of the Cigarette Catastrophe and the Case for Abolition, by Robert N. Proctor

The cigarette is the deadliest artifact in the history of human civilization. It is also one of the most beguiling, thanks to more than a century of manipulation at the hands of tobacco industry chemists. In Golden Holocaust, Robert N. Proctor draws on reams of formerly-secret industry documents to explore how the cigarette came to be the most widely-used drug on the planet, with six trillion sticks sold per year. He paints a harrowing picture of tobacco manufacturers conspiring to block the recognition of tobacco-cancer hazards, even as they ensnare legions of scientists and politicians in a web of denial. Proctor tells heretofore untold stories of fraud and subterfuge, and he makes the strongest case to date for a simple yet ambitious remedy: a ban on the manufacture and sale of cigarettes.

From the Inside Flap
“The great cause of global health is in Robert Proctor’s debt. Golden Holocaust is a model of impassioned scholarly research and advocacy. As Proctor so powerfully demonstrates, the time has come to hold the tobacco industry accountable for the massive disease, debility, and death that they produce around the world.”--Allan M. Brandt, author of The Cigarette Century

"Robert Proctor unpacks the sad history of an industrial fraud. His tightly reasoned exploration touches on all topics on which the tobacco makers lied repeatedly to Congress and the public."--Don Kennedy, President Emeritus, Stanford University and former Editor, Science

"This book is a remarkable compendium of evil. It will keep you spinning from page one through the last with a detailed description of how one of the most notorious industries in American history deceived and manipulated the public, the politicians, and the scientific community into allowing an age-old toxin to be breathed directly into the lungs of millions of Americans. It is the type of book that makes you wonder how, in God’s name, this could have happened?"-David Rosner, author of Deceit and Denial

"Proctor powerfully documents how a small number of tobacco companies caused a tragic, global epidemic. His account of this history and of the 'lessons learned' is relevant to the ongoing effort to end the tobacco epidemic and to efforts to control emerging pandemics of non-communicable diseases." --Jonathan M. Samet, M.D., M.S., Director, Institute for Global Health, University of Southern California

“Proctor weaves together the public historical record with inside details and insights from thousands of once secret industry documents. Anyone who cares about health, deception, science or politics will learn something new from this book.”-Stanton A. Glantz, Professor of Medicine, UC San Francisco, and author of The Cigarette Papers

"A powerful indictment of the world's deadliest industry"-John R. Seffrin, PhD, Chief Executive Officer, American Cancer Society

"By carefully analyzing formerly secret industry documents, Proctor has shown how cigarette manufacturers knew that the "filters" on virtually all cigarettes sold today are utterly fraudulent. His call for a ban is likely to change how we think about such devices; this excellent book is a must read for tobacco control and environmental activists alike."--Thomas E. Novotny, MD MPH, Former US Assistant Surgeon General and CEO, Cigarette Butt Pollution Project.

"Scholarly yet eminently readable, indeed gripping, this book asks us to consider what the end game for tobacco might look like. A must-read for policy makers and public health officials, and for anyone struggling against the tobacco industry in the field."--Professor Judith Mackay, Senior Advisor, World Lung Foundation, Hong Kong, China SAR"

"The machine-rolled cigarette is the single most deadly consumer product ever made. Proctor's powerful, witty, and wide-ranging book shows how we came to accept as normal the promotion and use of products that have caused a global epidemic of disease and death. But more importantly, he outlines a way to end this grim chapter in human history."--Ruth E. Malone, RN, PhD, FAAN, Editor, Tobacco Control

“This is the most important book on smoking in fifty years. Proctor’s unique mix of scholarship, readability, wit and political understanding tells a no-holds-barred story with conclusions that governments cannot afford to ignore. It will change the course of public health history.”--Professor Mike Daube, President, Australian Council on Smoking and Health

"Proctor draws masterfully from a vast archive of documents wrested from the industry, including many never before discussed, and mounts an unforgettable case about what the tobacco industry has done and what we must do about it. This is the book to help us understand what we must do to save lives."--Peter Galison, author of Einstein's Clocks, Poincaré’s Maps

"Golden Holocaust will stand indelibly as a landmark in the field of medicine and the history of science. It is a monument of committed scholarship and cool passion, making brilliant use of the new technics of data-mining to reveal a terrible calculus, while giving the lie to claims that advocacy must be the enemy of objectivity. Lives, far too many lives, depend on what this book contains."--Iain Boal, Birkbeck College, London and Guggenheim Fellow in Science and Technology

"Robert Proctor draws an unvarnished conclusion: that the tobacco industry, and the men who led it, were evil, plain and simple. They knowingly sold a product that, when used as intended, killed people. And then they conspired to suppress the evidence. Not everyone will agree with Proctor, but anyone interested in the intertwined issues of science and health, and culture and commerce, needs to read this book."--Naomi Oreskes, coauthor of Merchants of Doubt

“Robert Proctor lays bare the deliberate choices made by the tobacco companies to addict their customers and cause premature death. Here is clarity to the unprecedented scientific fraud perpetrated by the tobacco industry.”--William A. Farone, Ph.D. Chairman, Applied Power Concepts, Inc. (formerly Director of Scientific Research for Philip Morris USA, 1977-1984).

A truly important book, appropriately horrifying
By John R Mashey
I have read Allan Brandt's The Cigarette Century: The Rise, Fall, and Deadly Persistence of the Product That Defined America, David Michaels'Doubt is Their Product: How Industry's Assault on Science Threatens Your Health, Proctor's earlier Cancer Wars: How Politics Shapes What We Know And Don't Know About Cancer and Agnotology: The Making and Unmaking of Ignorance, among others. I have also spent many dozens of hours rummaging in the UCSF tobacco archives.

Still, I am learning a great deal from this meticulously-documented book, which articulates the pervasive history of an industry that survives only by addicting children while their brains are developing. I thought I was reasonably familiar with the tactics and the people involved. I was wrong - almost every page reveals more examples. It is especially upsetting to read of the vast number of well-known people who have cooperated with the tobacco industry, even in recent years.

I repeat just one of many horribly-fascinating quotes (p.114), from Bob Herbert's interview with David Goerlitz, the "Winston Man."
'Goerlitz then asked whether any of the company's executives smoke and got this answer: "Are you kidding? We reserve that right for the poor, the young, the black and the stupid."

Tobacco marketeers seem the best in the world, terrifically inventive, but not in a good way. Pitting their skills against the judgement of children seems an unfair match. I'm learning they have been far more inventive than I thought. Adults can do as they wish, but very few adults start smoking and keep doing it. The typical age when adult smokers first started has moved down from the late teens to early teens. Proctor traces the various marketing campaigns that accomplished that goal (pp.71-83).

Proctor also discusses an odd connection of tobacco and climate change (pp.516-518). Tobacco production, distribution and use has a surprisingly high CO2 footprint, starting with cutting trees not just to grow tobacco but to cure it. Perhaps worse, tobacco pioneered many of the disinformation and doubt-creating tactics found pervasively today around environmental issues, as per Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming. Many of the main thinktanks involved in such activities turn out to have long histories of getting money from tobacco companies to help them. (Thank you, tobacco archives. It is a wonderful resource, as Proctor notes.)

The book's blurbs are from real experts, so I can add little, but to say this is very important book.
It will upset people ... and people should be upset.

Scholarship pointing to a solution
By Stephen Hamann
I am pleased to say I have read and greatly enjoyed this book. As others have already stated, the tobacco industry and various of its co-conspirators are exposed in Proctor's Golden Holocaust. This includes a history of lies, fraud, conspiracy to defraud and misrepresent, illegal actions, and entwining politicians, academics, public relations experts and media reporters, and many others in deceiving the public, various government authorities and health officials in believing a manufactured history of the tobacco industry and its products. For tobacco companies, perception is reality, and they are like magicians who use influence, distraction, diversion and timing to free themselves from the chains of their unethical and fatal entrapments. Yet hundreds of millions of their customers are freed only by an early death.

If this was the only message of this book, then it would just be another, very in-depth indictment of an industry already found guilty through the RICO, organized crime law in the US. The US government decision against the tobacco companies runs 1,700 pages and also documents the nefarious history of the industry. What is important to me, in addition to the scholarship in tracing the web of deceit and fraud of the industry, is the fact that the author provides some recommendations for action against the industry. There are 20 recommendations; ten the author calls obvious solutions, mostly designed to reduce demand, and ten that are less obvious, but in my mind more important. History is a teacher that we ignore at our peril, so it is important to see the kinds of supply-side measures and proposals that the author suggests. In the end, the author suggests that manufactured tobacco products be abolished as a fitting realization of our neglect of the reality of tobacco's brutal consequences as a consumer product. His many recommendations are important possibilities for immediate action to get to that final resolution.

I recommend this and other historical books, for example, The Cigarette Century and the free online, Inherently Bad, and Bad Only, which shed light on tobacco control history and how pervasively the tobacco industry has insinuated itself and its products into the consumer culture. The take away message from this book for me is that history should be a motivator to fundamental change of a broken corporate and consumer system which continues to allow the `free trade' of the deadliest, most costly product of all time.

Incredibly important, eminently readable
By Harry Lando
I will not comment in detail because the prior reviews have done an excellent job of summarizing key points of this outstanding resource. What I found unusual in addition to the very impressive scholarship and documentation is how engaging the writing is even when addressing such complex issues as causation and chemical constituents of tobacco smoke. There are many points that are both fascinating and horrifying. Perhaps what surprised me the most is how much I did not know previously despite my many years in this field. I have been actively promoting the book to all those who are concerned about the tobacco epidemic and how this epidemic might be addressed despite the power of the tobacco industry. Golden Holocaust will fascinate scholars and lay readers alike and will be a major reference for many years to come. Even very knowledgeable readers will be surprised by many of the revelations in this book.

In Damned Lies and Statistics, he shows how statistics are manipulated, mismanaged, misrepresented, and massaged by officials and other powerful groups to promote their agendas. He is a master at examining taken-for-granted "facts" and debunking them through careful sociological scrutiny."—Patricia Adler, author of Peer Power

Really interesting, even for those who don't understand stats
By Jessica Lynn
Best’s aim is to make statistics and numbers, particularly those widely shared in the media, more understandable and approachable for the modern person. Since I’m someone who is definitely not informed about anything having to do with math (English major, hollaaaa), I figured that this would be a great book for me to read.

Best’s novel looks into the statistics that affect our modern life. Every day, we hear activists and politicians battling it out for certain social issues. When I say social issues, I mean things like homelessness, sex work, or racism. And with Beyonce’s Super Bowl performance being so contentious nowadays, you can see how better understanding statistics around social issues can help people deal with all of the fallout.

Best gives examples like a problem of homelessness. Activists might guess and say that 3,000,000 people in the United States are homeless while the government will contend that 300,000 are. That’s a big difference! The media will most likely spread the larger statistic since that’s what people will be interested in hearing. But by spreading it, these false statistics are given to our entire country. Best’s book is scary, in a way. All of a sudden, I found myself questioning, “What in the media have I heard that is true? Have I personally been spreading statistics that aren’t anywhere close to being true?”

But, within his book, Joel Best hands us ways to consider the statistics we are given in the media and better determine whether or not they are true. And in doing so, we become more informed about social issues but also better consumers.

I found the book to be slightly repetitive at points, but I guess the point in that is in making sure that even people who don’t understand statistics get it by the end of the book. For that reason, I give this 4 out of 5 stars.

85% of all statistics are wrong
By C. Wagner
People are willing to criticize dubious statistics they do not like.
My favorite statistical anecdote is when I was at a skeptics' convention and had lunch with an IUPUI professor who taught statistics and said he opened each new class by saying that 85% of all statistics are wrong and then watching his students hastily scribbling the misinformation...except for a few who look up and say, "What the...?" Those few are the smart ones.
All numbers, cautions the author should be handled with care because we cannot understand a statistic unless we know something about how it came into being.
For instance, our mayor told the Rotary Club 1033 new jobs had been created in our dinky county in the past five years without defining "new," "jobs," "in the county," or even citing source. I could have just as easily claimed I had flapped my arms and flown to the moon.
Professional statistics may be no better...
Sometimes folks might merely be giving us bad numbers, or they might be trying to confuse us. You might ask how that number was produced, apparently in all scenarios.
This titles include many examples of dubious statistics, but no example of correct statistics.
Imagine that!
Chapter 7 deals with statistical literacy and is more than worth a read.
However, that mere fact is that only five previous Amazon readers have reviewed this book indicates to me that this objective thinking is not of interest to the majority of America.

Dead Pool: Lake Powell, Global Warming, and the Future of Water in the West, by James Lawrence Powell

Where will the water come from to sustain the great desert cities of Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Phoenix? In a provocative exploration of the past, present, and future of water in the West, James Lawrence Powell begins at Lake Powell, the vast reservoir that has become an emblem of this story. At present, Lake Powell is less than half full. Bathtub rings ten stories tall encircle its blue water; boat ramps and marinas lie stranded and useless. To refill it would require surplus water—but there is no surplus: burgeoning populations and thirsty crops consume every drop of the Colorado River. Add to this picture the looming effects of global warming and drought, and the scenario becomes bleaker still. Dead Pool, featuring rarely seen historical photographs, explains why America built the dam that made Lake Powell and others like it and then allowed its citizens to become dependent on their benefits, which were always temporary. Writing for a wide audience, Powell shows us exactly why an urgent threat during the first half of the twenty-first century will come not from the rising of the seas but from the falling of the reservoirs.

From Booklist
For some, “dead pool” is a betting game involving the death of celebrities. What Powell is referring to is the emptying of the arid West’s precious reservoirs, prime among them Lake Powell, which was created when the Colorado River was dammed in 1963, submerging Glen Canyon, one of the planet’s most spectacular places. The reservoir was a recreational haven until 2005, when it fell to one-third of its capacity. Given the enormous water needs of our desert metropolises—Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix—this is a catastrophe in the making. Powell presents a scientifically grounded inquiry into the grievous failure of the West’s megadams, which for all their colossal expense and engineering marvels wreak environmental havoc now exacerbated by global warming. For all its detail, this is an involving exposé as Powell vividly portrays a motley cast of characters, from hydrologists to power brokers; wryly parses the disastrous mix of Bureau of Reclamation politics and water policy; dramatically chronicles the pitched battles between dug-in government officials and improvising environmentalists; and offers lucid analysis of the difficult choices ahead. --Donna Seaman

From the Inside Flap
"Dead Pool is the best book I know about the current state of the Colorado River and the policy issues facing it."—Donald Worster, author of Rivers of Empire

"Dead Pool offers a powerful epitaph to the era of big dams. Carefully researched and cogently argued, it shows how the self-serving promoters of the Colorado River's dams have consistently ignored natural limits imposed by water supply, silt, and salt, creating a long-term crisis that may make ghost towns out of many of the overpopulated cities of the American West."—Jacques Leslie, author of Deep Water: The Epic Struggle Over Dams, Displaced People, and the Environment

Dead Pool or Mirror Pool?
By Wayne Lusvardi
The apocalyptic book Dead Pool tells us that there is a 50% chance of Lake Powell and the whole Colorado River dam system ending up as a "dead pool" by 2017 to 2021, OR SOONER, due to global warming (p. 184). Dead pool is defined as a permanent condition when the water level behind a dam is too low to spill water or generate hydroelectric power.

Powell extols early Colorado River explorer and anti-urban founder of the U.S. Geological Survey, John Wesley Powell, which Lake Powell is named after. But author James Powell never tells us if he is related.
Powell is a master story teller and educator. His book will teach the average reader much about the water system in the Southwest. He starts his book with an apocalyptic story of near dam collapse of the Glen Canyon Dam due to too much water in 1983; and ends his book with the story of how civilization in the Southwestern U.S., like the Indians in Chaco Canyon in the 12th century, will end soon due to too little water due to global warming resulting in dead and over-silted dams.

For proof positive Powell has a graphic photo on the cover of his book showing the present-day bathtub ring on Lake Powell; way, way above the water line. How could he be wrong? Look at the picture. Run the numbers and look at the data as Powell has done.
But the gnawing question after reading Powell's apocalyptic book remains: is he right; and if so, how right?

One of the centerpieces of Powell's argument is a bar graph on page 164 which shows the 10-Year Average Annual Flow at the northerly point of the Colorado River dam system from 1896 to 2007 measured in acre feet (an acre foot of water is one foot high of water spread over an acre of land; able to support about two urban families for a year).

A cursory look at the graph doesn't support Powell's apocalyptic claims. The graph shows fourteen years when the water flow in the Colorado River exceeded 20 million acre feet; and fourteen years when it fell below ten million acre feet. The average was 13.6 million acre feet (MAF). Two other times (in 1934 and 1977) the water flow in the River has fallen as low, or lower, than it was in 2001 (about 12.5 MAF). In 1979 the flow dropped to a low of 6 MAF. In 1984 the flow reached an all-time recorded high just over 25 MAF. What makes Powell convinced this is any different now and that water flows won't rebound, FOREVER?

Powell is certain that global warming will defy the statistical Law of Regression or gravitation toward the mean average because he is convinced that global warming is permanent. This is the problem I have with both global warming advocates and denialists. There is data that can show global warming or no global warming, whichever you choose. Powell looks into the mirror pool and chooses data to prove permanent warming. But this isn't science because in science you try to refute or falsify your own hypothesis.
Another assertion of Powell's book is that dams result in less water because impounding water behind dams results in higher evaporation. But Powell ignores the obvious: dams bring new water to former dry places; namely cities and farms. Neither does Powell mention the benefits of dams and regional water hydraulic systems: such as eliminating disease by sanitation systems; or saving forests by reducing the burning of wood for fuel by providing water for people to move off farms to cities. Instead, Powell advocates a return to the vision of explorer John Wesley Powell to live self-sufficiently on a 160-acre tract of land (p. 44-45; 245).

Powell frames his dam drama in religious language. Powell's antagonists, pro-dam politicians and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, are not just flawed or bureaucratic, they are portrayed as evil. Like John Wesley Powell, James Lawrence Powell is fond of Mormon theological socialism and irrigation systems (p. 35). Wesley Powell was opposed to the "theology" of Floyd Dominy, who is portrayed as an archetypical evil commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (p. 136). The Colorado River Compact Commissioners were driven by a religious "Manifest Destiny." And anti-capitalist and anti-modernist Wesley Powell is quoted as saying he was "more interested in the home and the cradle than in the bank counter."
Dead Pool is bound to be cited as secular scripture in the anti-dam movement like the story of Noah and the Ark in the Book of Genesis in the Judeo-Christian Bible; only the story is that of a drought instead of a flood. And like Noah, for all we know, Powell could be right. But what is the order of magnitude of probability for his anti-dam apocalyptic to justify his radical prescriptions?

Powell is a certaintist. Like all fundamentalists, he is convinced he is right. I have come to learn to be skeptical of certaintists, whether religious or secular. Powell's book takes you on a long mule ride in time down the Colorado River and Lake Powell. But is the imminent demise of Lake Powell a mirror pool of his own making?

Buy the book. It is a great read no matter what your take on it.

Comprehensive Great Read
By James Kay
It's been 20 years now since Marc Reisner wrote Cadillac Desert. If you enjoyed it as much as I did, Dead Pool is a must read. With all that has changed regarding western water issues since 1989, Dr. Powell does an excellent job of updating the topic and adding historical perspective to those go-go years of dam building by the Bureau of Reclamation during the 50's and 60s. While Reisner could not have imagined the effects of climate change on the overused waters of the Colorado River, Dead Pool also provides eye-opening documentation on how global warming may well be the straw that breaks the camel's back. With Lake Mead at historic lows and Lake Powell little more than half full, Dead Pool is mandatory reading for anyone concerned about the future of the West.

Don't need to read both this AND Cadillac Desert
By Stuart Sutton
If you read Cadillac Desert, and have a grasp of global warming, this book doesn't really offer much new. That said, this book is better for those with interest in the subject if you haven't read either one of these. It adequately covers most of the high points with a few minor added issues.

Shenoute of Atripe and the Uses of Poverty: Rural Patronage, Religious Conflict, and Monasticism in Late Antique Egypt, by Ariel G. Lopez

Shenoute of Atripe: stern abbot, loquacious preacher, patron of the poor and scourge of pagans in fifth-century Egypt. This book studies his numerous Coptic writings and finds them to be the most important literary source for the study of society, economy and religion in late antique Egypt. The issues and concerns Shenoute grappled with on a daily basis, Ariel Lopez argues, were not local problems, unique to one small corner of the ancient world. Rather, they are crucial to interpreting late antiquity as a historical period—rural patronage, religious intolerance, the Christian care of the poor and the local impact of the late Roman state. His little known writings provide us not only with a rare opportunity to see the life of a holy man as he himself saw it, but also with a privileged window into his world. Lopez brings Shenoute to prominence as witness of and participant in the major transformations of his time.

Review
"[Lopez] has written a stimulating and thought-provoking book."--Jitse H.F. Dijkstra"Vigiliae Christianae" (05/01/2015)"

From the Inside Flap
Lopez provides a new and exciting profile of Shenoute of Atripe that analyzes the abbot's career and contextualizes it within the social history of the late antique East. Perhaps the book's most important contribution is its proper (and overdue) restoration of Shenoute, one of the best-documented rural patrons of late antiquity, to the broader conversation about poverty, patronage, and shifting centers of power that has reshaped our understanding of the later Roman Empire. This book has much to offer both scholars interested in Shenoute and those working on the wider empire to which he belonged.

Welcome addition to the scanty literature on Shenoute
By SkookumPete
The fifth-century Egyptian abbot Shenoute was a larger-than-life figure in his time, but he scarcely figures in the history of the monastic movement, partly perhaps because he is not an attractive figure, partly because his long life is almost undocumented outside his own Coptic writings (which have never been properly collected and edited), and partly because his "White Monastery" left no lasting impression after a brief period of dominance in the lower Thebaid. Till now there have been only two book-length studies in English that I am aware of, both concerned with his rule within the walls of the establishment. Lopez's is the first to examine Shenoute's role in the larger community, in particular his conflict with the rich and powerful in defense of the "poor", a blanket term signifying all those who lay outside the secular power structure. He also provides a useful chapter on the abbot's destruction of the temple at Atripe and his plundering of a notable's home, putting these in the context of surviving forms of paganism in Egypt.

The book was originally written as a dissertation, and the scholarship is unimpeachable, but is thankfully free of academic stiffness and is quite readable if you happen to have an interest in late-antique Egypt or in Shenoute himself. I believe the story of this rebarbative monk will come out of the shadows in the 21st century, and Lopez's study is a good start.

The Three Failures of Creationism: Logic, Rhetoric, and Science, by Walter M. Fitch

Walter M. Fitch, a pioneer in the study of molecular evolution, has written this cogent overview of why creationism fails with respect to all the fundamentals of scientific inquiry. He explains the basics of logic and rhetoric at the heart of scientific thinking, shows what a logical syllogism is, and tells how one can detect that an argument is logically fallacious, and therefore invalid, or even duplicitous. Fitch takes his readers through the arguments used by creationists to question the science of evolution. He clearly delineates the fallacies in logic that characterize creationist thinking, and explores the basic statistics that creationists tend to ignore, including elementary genetics, the age of the Earth, and fossil dating. His book gives readers the tools they need for detecting and disassembling the ideas most frequently repeated by creationists.

Fascinating. . . . A primer for honing reasoning skills and using logic along with informed knowledge to offset specious and bombastic disputes. --Rita Hoots"NSTA Recommends" (01/04/2013)"

From the Inside Flap
“This thoughtful book is a sophisticated baloney detector for digesting the offal that creationists try to pass off as steak. The late Walter Fitch demonstrates that the logic and language of science depart from the delusions of creationism.”--Tim M. Berra, author of /i/Charles Darwin: The Concise Story of an Extraordinary Man //i/and /i/Evolution and the Myth of Creationism//i/

"Half a century ago, the structure and logic of science was taught in science departments, but these tasks are now relegated to departments of history and philosophy of science, where scientists seldom tread. This book shows us why scientists need to learn logic from scientists, and how they can. Walter Fitch's examples range from astronomy to DNA, and he manages to show at every turn how the assumptions of anti-evolutionists and other foes of science defeat themselves. This book should be part of every science curriculum, read by all students--and their professors. Fitch has left us a masterpiece."—Kevin Padian, University of California, Berkeley

“Walter Fitch makes a strong case: Creationism violates the evidence from scientific investigations, misrepresents the interpretation of primary religious documents, utterly fails as a logical presentation, and does so in blasts of unjustified rhetoric."—Richard E. Dickerson, University of California, Los Angeles

“Into this concise book late Walter Fitch poured his commitment to explaining evolution and his conviction that an understanding of logic and of scientific methods would lead the reader to see the strengths of evolutionary biology and the deficiencies of creationism.”—Joe Felsenstein, University of Washington

Good book, but there are better ones in this niche
By David A. Rintoul
This slim volume aims to be a "pertinent introduction to the logical, philosophical, methodological, and empirical issues" that are at play in the contentious discussion between evolutionary biological scientists and creationists. It does cover all of those areas thoroughly, but it fails as an introduction, since it often wanders into examples and terminology that would befuddle those whose science background is average or below. In addition, in many places the prose simply wanders, with some paragraphs that seem only tenuously connected to the previous paragraph. For example, the section on logical fallacies, a potentially rich area of exploration in an introductory book about evolution and creationism, is sadly disorganized and even muddled. This is also true for later sections, and the casual reader would quickly lose the thread of the narrative, probably not finishing the book. There are other books which attempt to fill this niche, including Sarkar's "Doubting Darwin?" and Miller's "Only a Theory", which are excellent for introducing interested non-scientific readers to the pertinent facts and fallacies. Readers would be well advised to seek out one of those books, and scientists/educators would be well advised to recommend them, rather than this volume, to interested students. (This review is excerpted from my review in Choice, the review journal of the American Library Association.)

Worth it.

An enjoyable book, giving a scientific insight into the ongoing battles of Evolution and Creationism. Sadly, the majority of the GOP Presidential Candidates do NOT believe in Evolution.

I particularly liked the discussion of "Kitzmiller v Dover Area School District" (Supreme Court Case), and the discussion of the various proofs for the existence or non-existence of God: the Benson Study measuring the effect of intercessory prayer, the argument from design given by Dembski, Behe and others. A good handbook on how to evaluate such arguments by constructing logical syllogisms.

It also taught me a few things I didn't know about "The Epic of Gilgamesh", genetic algorithms, St. Augustine, Mendelian genetics and the "hemoglobin mechanism" -- to name just a few of the items covered.

I thought it was well worth it -- really opened up a new world for me.

You are about twenty or thirty years late on this.
By Frumious Bandersnatch
When will people realize that you can never prove nor disprove the existence of god (or God) until it is too late for it to matter anyway. That is the fundamental nature of faith. It is a belief in something that cannot be proven. Nor can you disprove an entire belief system by attacking a singular components of that belief system. That's what we call a composition fallacy. That is what this book represents in the context of the larger body of literature put out by those who, like their adversaries, also hate for people to believe differently than they do.

Though perhaps not true of other faiths, most people of the Christian faith already recognize the salience of the theory of evolution. While Christianity is based upon the existence of an infallibal higher power, Christian apologists tend to recongnize fallability of the human understanding of that higher power. The fact that Christians didn't realize humans came from monkeys prior to Charles Darwin and electron microspcopes doesn't invalidate faith in a higher power. Look at it this way, science didn't realize humans came from monkeys either, and in relative terms the scientific community was nearly as slow to accept the theory. Does that invalidate science?

My intention is not to defend one side of this argument or the other, but to point out the futility of the broader argument and identify that the proximate argument of the book is a moot point. Evolution... good, we got it, science was right (after it was wrong a few hundred times and before it is wrong again another few hundred times). Are we still talking about this?

Ecosystems of CaliforniaFrom University of California Press

This long-anticipated reference and sourcebook for California’s remarkable ecological abundance provides an integrated assessment of each major ecosystem type—its distribution, structure, function, and management. A comprehensive synthesis of our knowledge about this biologically diverse state, Ecosystems of California covers the state from oceans to mountaintops using multiple lenses: past and present, flora and fauna, aquatic and terrestrial, natural and managed.

Each chapter evaluates natural processes for a specific ecosystem, describes drivers of change, and discusses how that ecosystem may be altered in the future. This book also explores the drivers of California’s ecological patterns and the history of the state’s various ecosystems, outlining how the challenges of climate change and invasive species and opportunities for regulation and stewardship could potentially affect the state’s ecosystems. The text explicitly incorporates both human impacts and conservation and restoration efforts and shows how ecosystems support human well-being. Edited by two esteemed ecosystem ecologists and with overviews by leading experts on each ecosystem, this definitive work will be indispensable for natural resource management and conservation professionals as well as for undergraduate or graduate students of California’s environment and curious naturalists.

It is commendable that chapters by experts in climatology, oceanography, and soils, among others who are not primarily ecologists, were included in the impressive range of topics in the book. But it is difficult to imagine why geology was neglected and there are no chapters by geologists.
