State of Mind: New California Art circa 1970, by Constance Lewallen, Karen Moss

State of Mind, the lavishly illustrated companion book to the exhibition of the same name, investigates California’s vital contributions to Conceptual art—in particular, work that emerged in the late 1960s among scattered groups of young artists. The essays reveal connections between the northern and southern California Conceptual art scenes and argue that Conceptualism’s experimental practices and an array of then-new media—performance, site-specific installations, film and video, mail art, and artists’ publications—continue to exert an enormous influence on the artists working today.

Review
"Informative and well written."--"Orange County Register"

"Will leave [locals] . . . wondering how they failed to notice so much provocative activity - a lot of it very public - when it occurred."--"San Francisco Chronicle"

"Makes for conceptual art's continued influence on contemporary art."--"Public Art Review"

"A pleasure. . . . The curators have written short, elucidating comments for almost everything here, about 150 items. Not only do their words bring individual images to life; but they also add up to an absorbing narrative of a place and an era."--Holland Cotter"New York Times" (07/11/2013)

"Provocative. . . . Puts pressure on the category of idea-based art through a focus on the body, ritual, media and the social world."--Gillian Young"Art in America" (07/11/2013)

"While showing a real breadth, and the consistency of various sorts of conceptual thinking, ["State of Mind" is] in fact very useful in terms of ways in which an artist could reinvent their congenial mediums to express social, political, as well as artistic concerns."--Phong Bui"The Brooklyn Rail" (07/15/2013)

"Constance Lewallen and Karen Moss take advantage of [the] outsider position, making use of art s ability to conjure or invent new meanings and contexts."--Maika Pollack"Gallerist NY" (01/16/2013)"

From the Inside Flap
"There is not a trace of the provincial nor the apologetic in the tone of the State of Mind texts. Rather there is a justified claim for the sophisticated originality of this Californian art—sophisticated because the authors have convincingly argued that the artists, for the most part, had many conscious connections and familiarity with art from the rest of the country and Europe, yet were driven by a desire to be independent and different."

—Moira Roth, editor and contributor, The Amazing Decade: Women and Performance Art in America 1970-1980

"State of Mind: New California Art circa 1970 is an essential overview of the rich and complex moment when California assumed its role as a leading center for the making and exhibition of the kind of adventurous and progressive art that immediately fascinated the world, and over the years has come to define a generation and a region. An unmatched source of hard-to-find primary images combined with thought-provoking critical essays, this book can easily function as a standard text on this subject.”

—David Ross, former director of SFMOMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art, and currently Chairman of the MFA program in Art Practice at The School of Visual Arts

Eurasian: Mixed Identities in the United States, China, and Hong Kong, 1842-1943, by Emma Jinhua Teng

In the second half of the nineteenth century, global labor migration, trade, and overseas study brought China and the United States into close contact, leading to new cross-cultural encounters that brought mixed-race families into being. Yet the stories of these families remain largely unknown. How did interracial families negotiate their identities within these societies when mixed-race marriage was taboo and “Eurasian” often a derisive term?

In Eurasian, Emma Jinhua Teng compares Chinese-Western mixed-race families in the United States, China, and Hong Kong, examining both the range of ideas that shaped the formation of Eurasian identities in these diverse contexts and the claims set forth by individual Eurasians concerning their own identities. Teng argues that Eurasians were not universally marginalized during this era, as is often asserted. Rather, Eurasians often found themselves facing contradictions between exclusionary and inclusive ideologies of race and nationality, and between overt racism and more subtle forms of prejudice that were counterbalanced by partial acceptance and privilege.

By tracing the stories of mixed and transnational families during an earlier era of globalization, Eurasian also demonstrates to students, faculty, scholars, and researchers how changes in interracial ideology have allowed the descendants of some of these families to reclaim their dual heritage with pride.

From the Inside Flap
“Beautifully written and thoughtfully crafted, Teng’s Eurasian is a pleasure to read. The author has written a nuanced, multisited account of mixed families and Eurasian identities that will be important reading for students in U.S. and Chinese history and in Asian, Asian American, and Ethnic Studies. The author tells these wonderful life stories and adeptly uses them to track larger historical processes and phenomena.” —Kornel Chang, author of Pacific Connections: The Making of the U.S.-Canadian Borderlands

"By examining Eurasian identities from Chinese and American perspectives, Emma Teng offers a truly transnational and multicultural intellectual project that few works which appear to be such can actually claim, for she uses with facility and depth materials in English and Chinese, and goes beyond the obvious duality of American/British on the one hand, and Chinese on the other, to introduce a third element, that of the Asian American, examining not just the distinct viewpoints separately, but, more interestingly, the intersections between and among them." —Evelyn Hu-DeHart, editor of Across the Pacific: Asian Americans and Globalization

"Emma Teng’s rich and compelling narrative captures within one elegant volume a profoundly complex story about diaspora, citizenship, empire, nation, taxonomy, identity, capital, race, labor, class, gender, intimacy, and the body, all the while avoiding the twin pitfalls of transnational abstraction and dislocated particulars that threaten any work of such scope and ambition. It is an analysis of the highest quality, delivering an argument that is empathetic, but which not for a moment relaxes either the critical tension between the author and her subject, nor attempts to resolve in any simplistic fashion the tensions and anxieties of her characters or the time period in question. In this work, Teng is at once master instrument maker, and master musician." —Thomas S. Mullaney, author of Coming to Terms with the Nation: Ethnic Classification in Modern China

Outstanding Treatment of Complex Topic
By Antoinette J. Lee
Emma Jinhua Teng examines the descendants of Chinese-European unions in the United States, Hong Kong, and China. She develops this study against the backdrop of the history of the Chinese in the United States and Europeans in China and Hong Kong from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. While Eurasians faced discrimination by European Americans and the Chinese, there are also instances where they were welcomed by parents, grandparents, and neighbors. In today's United States, many people identify with multiple ethnicities, races, and cultures. This book may point the way to examining today's hybrid population and the kind of new America that is developing. Clearly, the fears surrounding mixed-bloods seem quaint and erroneous by today's standards. Hawaii is a good laboratory for studying hybrid culture because the mixing has been underway for more than a century and the mixture of cultures is a matter of considerable pride.

Roots of Ecology: Antiquity to Hæckel, by Frank N. Egerton

Ecology is the centerpiece of many of the most important decisions that face humanity. Roots of Ecology documents the deep ancestry of this now enormously important science from the early ideas of Herodotos, Plato, and Pliny, up through those of Linnaeus and Darwin, to those that inspired Ernst Haeckel's mid-nineteenth-century neologism ecology. Based on a long-running series of regularly published columns, this important work gathers a vast literature illustrating the development of ecological and environmental concepts, ideas, and creative thought that has led to our modern view of ecology. Roots of Ecology should be on every ecologist's shelf.

Excellent

It's first a collection of excellent articles that really offered us something that is rarely known to most ecologists and ecology major students. While the price is high for similar kind of books, all (I didn't check one by one but quite sure) articles can be read from the following link of the Ecological Society of America.

Pretty expensive for a bit of science
By Joseph J. Miksis
I wanted to read this book after seeing it discussed in "On Wisconsin" magazine. Unfortunately, after seeing its price on Amazon, I realize this is a "required textbook" that Egerton's students are forced to purchase at an inflated price, rather than a tome the interested layman might pay to read. A pity.

Emerging Avian Disease (Studies in Avian Biology)From Brand: University of California Press

In this volume, new human disease pandemics, arising from animals stimulated by ongoing environmental change, demonstrate the value of ornithological research into avian diseases. A group of 29 researchers addresses a diverse set of topics, including the evolutionary and ecological aspects of the host-vector systems, the effects of genetic variation, introduction success and vector ecology, evolution of resistance and virulence of pathogens, and the effects of changing geographic distributions. In addition to empirical studies under field conditions, the authors present predictive models to assess the movement and potential impact of these diseases. Other chapters delve into the potential impacts of pathogens and the key role of biosurveillance and documenting impacts of disease on bird populations.

The Gentrification of the Mind: Witness to a Lost Imagination, by Sarah Schulman

In this gripping memoir of the AIDS years (1981–1996), Sarah Schulman recalls how much of the rebellious queer culture, cheap rents, and a vibrant downtown arts movement vanished almost overnight to be replaced by gay conservative spokespeople and mainstream consumerism. Schulman takes us back to her Lower East Side and brings it to life, filling these pages with vivid memories of her avant-garde queer friends and dramatically recreating the early years of the AIDS crisis as experienced by a political insider. Interweaving personal reminiscence with cogent analysis, Schulman details her experience as a witness to the loss of a generation’s imagination and the consequences of that loss.

From the Inside Flap
"Sarah Schulman, as always, hits the nail on the head. I can't imagine a more insightful probe into gentrification and its inhumane consequences. Everyone needs to read this book."—Martin Duberman, author of Stonewall

“Sarah Schulman's The Gentrification of the Mind is a bulwark against the collective loss of memory. AIDS, gentrification, the struggle for gay rights, the class war that has driven entire communities of artists, immigrants, and outsiders from the neighborhoods they created—all these things have been erased by the official culture. Schulman's book will make you rage and weep, and then—just maybe—organize.”—Luc Sante, author of Low Life: Lures and Snares of Old New York

"Hard-headed, sensitive, and informed, this book will make the confused world of urban redevelopment and gentrification make notably more sense. Schulman has a mind as clear as a bell in evening. You'll be glad you read it. I was."—Samuel R. Delany, author of Through the Valley of the Nest of Spiders

A MOVING AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING MEMOIR
By Butters
I loved reading this moving and thought-provoking memoir by a noted queer activist, novelist and playwright who came of age in the 1980s Lower East Side of Manhattan. Aids, the struggle for gay rights, the electricity of the downtown arts scene, an unfolding class war that would drive the tribes of artists, immigrants and activists from the neighborhood they created -- it is all here.

I lived on the Lower East Side from 1974 to 1984 and this books helps me understand the furious ideological offensive (what Schulman calls "the gentrification of the mind") waged by the same banks and corporations that also profited from the gentrification of such urban neighborhoods. Many community institutions we activists relied upon on the Lower East Side disappeared overnight due to skyrocketing rents or cutbacks of funding. Many institutions claiming to be cultural or political alternatives became slowly coopted by the powers that be.

Reading "The Gentrification of the Mind: Witness to a Lost Imagination", we who lived through this period weep for what we have lost. But Schulman's call is not just to mourn our "lost imagination". It is also a call for us to learn from and build upon the all-too forgotten struggles of our radical ancestors. In this way we can more effectively organize against the banks and corporations, who are still seeking "the gentrification of the mind" today.

No Bones About It -- An Important Book
By James Lough
Sarah Schulman's recent book, "The Gentrification of the Mind: Witness to a Lost Imagination" is one of the most important books of the year. In it, she confronts the problem of gentrification that is endemic to urban neighborhoods in our liveliest cities. Gentrification effectively turns our creative hubs, teeming with diversity, into bland "suburbs in the cities," homogenizing people, tastes, and how we interpret our lives.

My new book, "This Ain't No Holiday Inn: Down and Out at the Chelsea Hotel 1980-1995″ addresses gentrification in its final chapters. But Schulman's book explores gentrification in detail, using the AIDS plague as its central example. The common attitude today is that, "Oh, we took care of AIDS; it's no longer a problem," is a perfect example of how not only our neighborhoods become gentrified, but our very minds become colonized by ignorant attitudes largely propagated by members of the white elite class. Even some gays, more concerned with fitting in than with fighting for their rights, share the attitude.

Here's how Schulman defines gentrification: "Physically it is an urban phenomena: the removal of communities of diverse classes, ethnicities, races, sexualities, languages, and points of view from the central neighborhoods of cities, and their replacement by more homogenized groups. With this comes the destruction of culture and relationship, and this destruction has profound consequences for the future lives of cities."

Did you know that Manhattan and San Francisco used to be affordable for young artists, rebels, bohemians, and freaks to move to and find a home with people like themselves? Now only the rich can afford to move there, so they can be with other rich folk like themselves. Tell me with a straight face that this does not dumb down our culture, our arts, and create a bland, conformist complacency that keeps the rich in power and the poor in poverty.

Amazing Read
By Keystone
This book is listed as biography, but it's so much more. Sarah Schulman writes about her place and time, then provides insight in to where that has led in terms of the changes to Manhattan in the last quarter century. How did New York City go from bankrupt to thriving? Artistic and bohemian to Trumpish and elite? AIDS.

From Alexander to Jesus (Hellenistic Culture and Society, Vol. 52), by Ory Amitay

Scholars have long recognized the relevance to Christianity of the many stories surrounding the life of Alexander the Great, who claimed to be the son of Zeus. But until now, no comprehensive effort has been made to connect the mythic life and career of Alexander to the stories about Jesus and to the earliest theology of the nascent Christian churches. Ory Amitay delves into a wide range of primary texts in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew to trace Alexander as a mythological figure, from his relationship to his ancestor and rival, Herakles, to the idea of his divinity as the son of a god. In compelling detail, Amitay illuminates both Alexander’s links to Herakles and to two important and enduring ideas: that of divine sonship and that of reconciliation among peoples.

Anyone interested in the legacy of Alexander in Christianity
By Plutarch1
Any Alexander-philes out there? This is your book for what happened with myths of Alexander after he died and his stories circulated for centuries throughout the Middle East. And there are more stories about him than anyone, including Hercules and yes, even Jesus.

Many people are not aware of the amazing connection between the Jews and Alexander. He had dream/visions about them, the Chosen People, and they accumulated stories about him. Alexander was the first to recognize that the Jews had a special place in the world, and their beliefs were to be respected by foreign or occupying powers. Oddly enough, Julius Caesar came to the same conclusion which is why Jews throughout the Roman Empire were able to practice their religion without interference through the first century AD.

Amitay does a great job of showing the close relationship of Hercules and Alexander myths--and even Hercules and Jesus myths. There are numerous connections that he makes between Jesus and Alexander, but he doesn't quite get the main one--that Alexander transformed the world (see WW Tarn's 'fusion' model) from Greek vs Barbarian to the common brotherhood of man. Exactly what Jesus would have done.

Nevertheless, there is much to look at and ponder here. I especially liked Amitay's analysis of the coin symbolism going on--blending Hercules and Alexander and Divine Sonship on alternate sides of the coin. Beautiful.

The Nicest Kids in Town: American Bandstand, Rock 'n' Roll, and the Struggle for Civil Rights in 1950s Philadelphia, by Matthew F. Delmont

American Bandstand, one of the most popular television shows ever, broadcast from Philadelphia in the late fifties, a time when that city had become a battleground for civil rights. Counter to host Dick Clark’s claims that he integrated American Bandstand, this book reveals how the first national television program directed at teens discriminated against black youth during its early years and how black teens and civil rights advocates protested this discrimination. Matthew F. Delmont brings together major themes in American history—civil rights, rock and roll, television, and the emergence of a youth culture—as he tells how white families around American Bandstand’s studio mobilized to maintain all-white neighborhoods and how local school officials reinforced segregation long after Brown vs. Board of Education. The Nicest Kids in Town powerfully illustrates how national issues and history have their roots in local situations, and how nostalgic representations of the past, like the musical film Hairspray, based on the American Bandstand era, can work as impediments to progress in the present.

From the Inside Flap
“By challenging Dick Clark’s claim that he helped integrate American popular music and culture, Matthew Delmont puts the lie to Clark’s air-brushed history of American Bandstand’s role in racial desegregation. The Nicest Kids in Town shows how the nexus of sound, place, race, and space operated together to create and reinforce a myth of national memory and belonging. Just as importantly, this compelling cultural history demonstrates the importance of the youth market as a theater of struggle where brave young men and women—outraged by the discrimination and racism they faced for the simple act of enjoying music—refused to have their bodies, tastes, or desires policed. Delmont shows how the music moved them, and how in turn they moved the music onto television screens across America.”—Herman Gray, author of Cultural Moves.

“The Nicest Kids in Town speaks simultaneously to several significant current lines of inquiry among historians of the United States after World War II. Delmont takes on issues that we thought we already knew completely—the social and cultural history of the 1950s and ‘60s, the Civil Rights movement, the birth of television—but he brings original material to his story and connects these issues in new ways. Delmont’s work proves him to be a talented, careful, and thorough scholar, and in a large body of work on these topics, his book stands alone.”—Jay Mechling, author of On My Honor: Boy Scouts and the Making of American Youth.

Nicest Kids in Town
By atibamanii
I absolutely recommend this book to all Americans! Especially since the recent passing of Dick Clark.

Mr. Delmont reminds us of two important things about the U.S. in the 1950s & 1960s that still resonate in 2012. 1) American Bandstand was an American commercial enterprise that was not in the forefront of segregation, and 2) American Bandstand's mission was to reach a new growing teenaged consumer population. The show was designed for that from the beginning, meaning that its purpose was not only to reach as many teens as it could, and therefore sell as much product as possible, but also to keep from offending as many of those teens, and their parents, as possible.

You cannot have it both ways. You cannot increase your ratings on commercial television by taking a stand on a very controversial subject, such as race relations and integration were in the 1950s & 1960s. It couldn't be done then, and it can't be done now!

This is also an excellent history of segregation in housing, education, employment, and overall opportunity in Philadelphia that represents a microcosm of the United States.

This is a great book. It belongs with Race Beat and Warmth of Other Suns in telling the story of integration and racism in the U. S. This book talks about racism in Philadelphia- de facto segregation viewed as "different" from de jure segregation of the South. The story is woven around teens, the music industry, American Band Stand, civil rights activists, schools, a story more often told about the South than the third largest city at the time in America.
