Judaisms: A Twenty-First-Century Introduction to Jews and Jewish Identities, by Aaron J. Hahn Tapper

What does it mean to be a Jew in the twenty-first century? Exploring the multifaceted and intensely complicated characteristics of this age-old, ever-changing community, Judaisms examines how Jews are a culture, ethnicity, nation, nationality, race, religion, and more. With each chapter revolving around a single theme (Narratives, Sinais, Zions, Messiahs, Laws, Mysticisms, Cultures, Movements, Genocides, Powers, Borders, and Futures) this introductory textbook interrogates and broadens readers’ understandings of Jewish communities. Written for a new mode of teaching—one that recognizes the core role that identity formation plays in our lives—this book weaves together alternative and marginalized voices to illustrate how Jews have always been in the process of reshaping their customs, practices, and beliefs. Judaisms is the first book to assess and summarize Jewish history from the time of the Hebrew Bible through today using multiple perspectives.

A very comprehensive survey.
By quiske
This is a very comprehensive survey of the extraordinary diversity and richness of contemporary Jewish civilization. It is quite readable, though it occasionally provides more information than one may wish about neglected corners of this vast canvas. It challenges many familiar Jewish narratives, just as do many college courses in Hebrew Bible. This is an excellent book that merits a substantial role in Jewish Education.

Voicing Subjects: Public Intimacy and Mediation in Kathmandu (South Asia Across the Disciplines), by Laura Kunreuther

Voicing Subjects traces the relation between public speech and notions of personal interiority in Kathmandu.  It explores two seemingly distinct formations of voice that have emerged in the midst of the country’s recent political and economic upheavals: a political voice associated with civic empowerment and collective agency, and an intimate voice associated with emotional proximity and authentic feeling.  Both are produced and circulated through the media, especially through interactive technologies. The author argues that these two formations of voice are mutually constitutive and aligned with modern ideologies of democracy and neoliberal economic projects.  This ethnography is set during an extraordinary period in Nepal’s history that has seen a relatively peaceful 1990 revolution that re-established democracy, a Maoist civil war, and the massacre of the royal family.  These dramatic changes have been accompanied by the proliferation of intimate and political discourse in the expanding public sphere, making the figure of voice ever more critical to an understanding of emerging subjectivity, structural change and cultural mediation.

From the Inside Flap
"Kunreuther has produced a confident and compelling manuscript that will be of interest to scholars and students not only of South Asia but of the politics of publicness more generally. Her attention to voice is refreshing and challenges the way scholars think of media."—William Mazzarella, author of Censorium: Cinema and the Open Edge of Mass Publicity

"Laura Kunreuther’s Voicing Subjects uses the new prevalence of voice-related metaphors, discourses, and technologies as a means of exploring shifting forms of subjectivity during a tumultuous period of social and political change in Nepal. Through careful ethnography, she creatively documents a range of distinctly Nepali experiences of selfhood and agency and how these meld and clash with “liberal” forms of subjectivity embedded in democratic politics and commercial mass media technologies. Voicing Subjects is an original and important contribution
to the anthropology of subjectivity."—Mark Liechty, author of Suitably Modern: Making Middle-Class Culture in a New Consumer Society

"Laura Kunreuther's book will make readers rethink their assumptions about voice because it brings together the political and intimate realms in new and revealing ways.  This ethnography of urban Nepalis' emergent subjectivities focuses on the role of radio in creating an affective public.  It also demonstrates how an anthropology of the voice -- and of seeing, hearing, and speaking -- can shed light on the interwoven nature of intimacy, political movements, gender, technology, and social change."—Laura Ahearn, author of Invitations to Love: Literacy, Love Letters, and Social Change in Nepal

The Gender of Memory: Rural Women and China's Collective Past, by Gail Hershatter

What can we learn about the Chinese revolution by placing a doubly marginalized group—rural women—at the center of the inquiry? In this book, Gail Hershatter explores changes in the lives of seventy-two elderly women in rural Shaanxi province during the revolutionary decades of the 1950s and 1960s. Interweaving these women’s life histories with insightful analysis, Hershatter shows how Party-state policy became local and personal, and how it affected women’s agricultural work, domestic routines, activism, marriage, childbirth, and parenting—even their notions of virtue and respectability. The women narrate their pasts from the vantage point of the present and highlight their enduring virtues, important achievements, and most deeply harbored grievances. In showing what memories can tell us about gender as an axis of power, difference, and collectivity in 1950s rural China and the present, Hershatter powerfully examines the nature of socialism and how gender figured in its creation.

From the Inside Flap
"I was swept into the world of Hershatter's Gender of Memory. Each of these oral histories is riveting and astonishing, giving a human -- and often, heartbreaking -- dimension to history. As this book shows, history is not simply recorded facts, but what is remembered by those who were once silent." —Amy Tan

“Gail Hershatter’s book transforms our understanding of China’s Communist revolution. Organizing women and raising their status was a central goal of Communist leaders from the start. But what difference did that commitment make to the course of modern Chinese history? Hershatter’s answers – framed in the language of her rural informants -- are stunning. In her moving and often wrenching interviews with rural women, she comes to understand that women’s active support, sacrifice, and engagement ultimately gave the Communist leadership its authority at the household level.” —Susan Mann, author of The Talented Women of the Zhang Family

"One of the most important works on China’s much-neglected 1950s, and a very significant contribution to the literature on historical memory and methodology. There really is something for everybody here." —Kenneth Pomeranz, author of The Great Divergence

“This book is in a league of its own: a meticulous, thoughtful and sensitive interrogation of sources about an understudied aspect of China's revolutionary history, a critical exploration of how gender mediates personal recollections of the past, and a beautifully written narrative about women's experiences of China's land reform and collectivisation in the 1950s.” —Harriet Evans, author of The Subject of Gender: Daughters and Mothers in Urban China

"Hershatter's ethnographically rich and original analysis of time and gendered periodization is revelatory and her powerful account of the early basis for genuine utopianism is utterly convincing." —James C. Scott, author of The Art of Not Being Governed

"This book is an event." —Andrew Barshay, author of The Social Sciences in Modern Japan: The Marxian and Modernist Traditions

About the Author
Gail Hershatter is Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She is the author of many books, including Dangerous Pleasures: Prostitution and Modernity in Twentieth-Century Shanghai and Women in China’s Long Twentieth Century, both from UC Press.

Siegfried Kracauer's American Writings: Essays on Film and Popular Culture (Weimar and Now: German Cultural Criticism), by Siegfried Kraca

Siegfried Kracauer (1889–1966), friend and colleague of Walter Benjamin and Theodor Adorno, was one of the most influential film critics of the mid-twentieth century. In this book, Johannes von Moltke and Kristy Rawson have, for the first time assembled essays in cultural criticism, film, literature, and media theory that Kracauer wrote during the quarter century he spent in America after fleeing Nazi-occupied Europe. In the decades following his arrival in the United States, Kracauer commented on developments in American and European cinema, wrote on film noir and neorealism, examined unsettling political trends in mainstream cinema, and reviewed the contemporary experiments of avant-garde filmmakers. As a cultural critic, he also ranged far beyond cinema, intervening in debates regarding Jewish culture, unraveling national and racial stereotypes, and reflecting on the state of arts and humanities in the 1950s. These essays, together with the editors' introductions and an afterward by Martin Jay offer illuminating insights into the films and culture of the postwar years and provide a unique perspective on this eminent émigré intellectual.

Coffee Life in Japan, by Merry White

This fascinating book—part ethnography, part memoir—traces Japan’s vibrant café society over one hundred and thirty years. Merry White traces Japan’s coffee craze from the turn of the twentieth century, when Japan helped to launch the Brazilian coffee industry, to the present day, as uniquely Japanese ways with coffee surface in Europe and America. White’s book takes up themes as diverse as gender, privacy, perfectionism, and urbanism. She shows how coffee and coffee spaces have been central to the formation of Japanese notions about the uses of public space, social change, modernity, and pleasure. White describes how the café in Japan, from its start in 1888, has been a place to encounter new ideas and experiments in thought, behavior, sexuality , dress, and taste. It is where a person can be socially, artistically, or philosophically engaged or politically vocal. It is also, importantly, an urban oasis, where one can be private in public.

From the Inside Flap
“Cafes are where change happens and people feel most themselves. In this surprising book we see how Japan came of age in the café—where women became free, where people jazz and poetry could reign. And, of course, where coffee is at its perfectionist best. Always a congenial companion and teacher, Merry White shows us a whole society in a beautifully made cup.” —Corby Kummer, The Atlantic

“Merry White's book is vital reading for anyone interested in culture and coffee, which has a surprising and surprisingly long history in Japan. Tracing the evolving role of the country's cafes, and taking us on armchair visits to some of the best, White makes us want to board a plane immediately to sample a cup brewed with ‘kodawari,’ a passion bordering on obsession. “ —Devra First, The Boston Globe

"Coffee Life in Japan features highly engaging history and ethnographic detail on coffee culture in Japan. Many readers will delight in reading this work. White provides an affectionate, deeply felt, well reasoned book on coffee, cafes, and urban spaces in Japan."—Christine Yano, author of Airborne Dreams:  "Nisei" Stewardesses and Pan American World Airways

"Combining unmistakable relish for the subject with decades of academic expertise, Merry White skillfully demonstrates that the café, not the teahouse, is a core space in urban Japanese life. Her portrait of their endurance, proliferation, and diversity aptly illustrates how coffee drinking establishments accommodate social and personal needs, catering to a range of tastes and functions. It is a lovely and important book not only about the history and meanings of Japan’s liquid mojo, but also about the creation of new urban spaces for privacy and sociality." —Laura Miller, author of Beauty Up: Exploring Contemporary Japanese Body Aesthetics

About the Author
Merry White is Professor of Anthropology at Boston University and is the author of many books, including Perfectly Japanese: Making Families in an Era of Upheaval (UC Press) and The Japanese Overseas.

An interesting book!
By Autamme_dot_com
For some reason one tends to associate Japan with a tea culture and not coffee. Oh the misleading power of assumption. For those who shared this reviewer's ignorance of Japanese coffee culture, this could be an interesting work to peruse.

Written in an academic style but accessible to a tenacious reader, this book takes a look at the café society in Japan in the past 130 years and how coffee has helped to shape Japanese society in different ways. It might seem far-fetched yet coffee has played a much greater part in 'modern-day' Japan than you could imagine.

As befitting an academic book, the author has clearly done their homework and a multitude of reference sources and notations are provided for the reader's own reference. After a comprehensive introduction to this relatively 'obscure' subject and an interesting overview about Japan's cafés, the next chapter is the curiously-titled 'Modernity and the Passion Factory.' where jazz, modernity, empowerment of women and cultural clashes all enter the mix.

Japan embraced coffee, made its own coffee emperors and started to make a contemporary Japanese coffee and, of course, an entire coffee culture and counter culture at the same time. Rituals were formed, rules developed, traditions strengthened and no doubt Unchangeable things slowly changed. All due to the humble coffee bean and its brew.

Certainly if you have the patience and the interest, this book will certainly give you a lot of food for thought, a lot of new knowledge and maybe a whole new perceptive to Japanese culture as a whole. The book is low on fripperies like colour photographs and infographics but high on information. A book you might need to focus on - which is no bad thing - rather than casually flip through. A book you might want to sit down in a comfy chair with, a cup of tea, oops, coffee at your side and a bit of time...

An interesting book, not everyone's cup of tea (oops, you don't tend to refer to everyone's cup of coffee) perhaps but worthy of a read if you are interested in society changes, history, philosophy, gastronomy or just piling in bits of knowledge to the old grey matter for good measure.

Thick with clear understanding of both Japan and Coffee. Very good but long read. Read this while traveling in Japan to a Coffee Show and visiting Coffee Roasters and Cafes. I was surprised how accurate and insightful this book was on both topics.

Coffee and Japan
By EdM.
Excellent reading material for those who are interested in the history of coffee and/or Japan. The focus is on the story of coffee and its impact in Japan and the evolution of the cafe, coffee shop. The first few chapters give a good overview of the 1930s cafes as well as the introduction of the beverage to Japan in the late seventeen hundreds. The Japanese took coffee and made it a national drink that is unique to the country. The post war period saw the proliferation of the coffee shop and different varieties such as jazz or theme cafes. The modern coffee shop ( from the seventies to today) offer even more variations even though the the small traditional cafe seems to be the first choice for most. Corporate coffee chains like Starbucks find out what matters to the Japanese consumer is good quality coffee and the blends of different varieties of bean as well as the individual atmosphere of a Japanese cafe. The most interesting chapter is the one concerning Japan and its influence on the international coffee market. The best coffee from Brazil is purchased by the Japanese coffee companies and the price paid influences the second tier price for other beans that are bought by other countries. The book is interesting for history readers also as the author manages to convey a distinct tone for the chronicle of the role of coffee and the coffee shop in twentieth century Japan. The future is bright for the coffee consumer and the cafe proprietor. Note: the Japanese style coffee shop now has come to America in NYC and San Francisco.

Understanding the ways of a distant land in another era
By -
The Adventures of Ibn Battuta by Prof. Dunn recounts the complex and cosmopolitan world of medieval Dar al-Islam in a friendly, but wise prose. He follows the story from Ibn Battuta's book Rihla, and offers the reader context and commentary on cultural and historical circumstances to bridge the reasoning of this world to modern readers. Prof. Dunn thus allows readers to understand the dynamics beyond the facts, something that few scholars are able to do for lay readers.

Ibn Battuta has his own agenda, so Prof. Dunn performs his due diligence by cross-referencing and validating various stories with modern scholarship. His understanding of medieval languages, trade routes, contemporary conflicts, as well as lay and official protocol in different parts of the region (Malmuk Egypt, Ilkhan Persia, etc.) illuminates the reasoning behind the meander of our traveling unemployed lawyer.

Prof. Dunn's book is accessible because he gracefully acclimates the modern reader to the ways of a distant land in another era. That said, the legions of notes provide valuable references and insight for those seeking greater detail.

Highly recommended for both casual and seasoned medieval collection.

amazing retelling of and meditation on the travels of this ...
By James Kenney
I was leery of this book when I realized it wasn't an actual translation of Ibn Battuta, but a summary of Ibn Battuta, however Ross Dunn is an extraordinary scholar completely at ease with his subject and his period. It is a powerful, amazing retelling of and meditation on the travels of this remarkable 14th century vagabond. If you like Islamic history, this book will bring it to life for you.

A Different Perspective of the World of Islam
By A. Paolini
This book is not the diary of Ibn Battuta as he traveled through out North Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Rather it is excerpts from his written memoir with descriptions of the the political and social situation in the places and time that he traveled. Dunn provides a view of the Islamic world with which most of us are unfamiliar and certainly one that is at great variance with the one today.

Haj to Utopia: How the Ghadar Movement Charted Global Radicalism and Attempted to Overthrow the British Empire (California World History Li

In The Haj to Utopia, Maia Ramnath tells the dramatic story of Ghadar, the Indian anticolonial movement that attempted overthrow of the British Empire. Founded by South Asian immigrants in California, Ghadar—which is translated as “mutiny”—quickly became a global presence in East Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and East Africa. Ramnath brings this epic struggle to life as she traces Ghadar’s origins to the Swadeshi Movement in Bengal, its establishment of headquarters in Berkeley, California, and its fostering by anarchists in London, Paris, and Berlin. Linking Britain’s declaration of war on Germany in 1914 to Ghadar’s declaration of war on Britain, Ramnath vividly recounts how 8,000 rebels were deployed from around the world to take up the battle in Hindustan. The Haj to Utopia demonstrates how far-flung freedom fighters managed to articulate a radical new world order out of seemingly contradictory ideas.

“Maia Ramnath's Haj to Utopia is an odyssey through the world of early twentieth-century political radicalism, with a focus on the freedom dreams of those of Indian ancestry who found themselves on the West Coast of the United States. She traces with pointillist care the unruly imaginations fired up by empire's unimaginative rule. To be read and re-read.”

—Vijay Prashad, author of The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World

"Maia Ramnath’s Haj to Utopia is a thought-provoking study of the Ghadar project for revolutionary change. Going beyond the frame of a nationalist, armed struggle for the overthrow of British rule in India, the author deftly explores and contextualizes the links between Ghadar and a medley of revolutionary groups, and the exotic mix of radical ideas and activities. It provides valuable insight into the peculiar conjunction of nationalist, pan-Islamist, and Marxian discourses which made Ghadar a unique revolutionary adventure."

—Harish K. Puri, author Ghadar Movement: Ideology, Organisation and Strategy

“Maia Ramnath's book on the Ghadar Movement is an impressive accomplishment: it is at once an in-depth monograph surpassing all previous work on the subject, and a model of how world history should be written. She places the Ghadar in the perspective of pre-nationalist, anti-imperialist struggles, connecting it with other contemporary revolutionary movements around the world. It is empirically rich—Ramnath explores all extant empirical sources and illuminates them with exacting theoretical insights.”

—Dilip Basu, University of California, Santa Cruz

“Maia Ramnath's meticulous scholarship enables her to effortlessly avoid the old clichés of nationalist historiography and the new clichés of ‘global’ and ‘cosmopolitan’ history. The Haj to Utopia is respectful of detail and context and has a fine feeling for the diverse social histories and intellectual movements in which its characters find themselves.”

—Benjamin Zachariah, author of Playing the Nation Game: the Ambiguities of Nationalism in India

A Hodgepodge Analyzed Through British Sources
By Treal M.
First I must say that Ramnath did an incredible amount of research. The amount of time that went into this work is certainly impressive. Nonetheless, despite its intriguing topic, this book is largely devoid of a convincing argument.

The main problem is that Ramnath lists all quasi-connected events and characters under the banner of Ghadar. This is to compliment her argument that Ghadar served as a switchboard that could "provide connecting links" for anti-colonial movements, a purpose Ghadar was ideal for since it did not have a strict ideology or central leadership. However, it is not apparent, even in the book, as to when Ghadar actually became a movement. The first issue of the Hindustan Ghadar newspaper is the first clear signal of a beginning. Yet, Ramnath begins her narrative with events and personalities that pre-date the first issue by over a decade. Many of these individuals were apart of long standing nationalist movements and did not have any formal participation in the actual Ghadar party that evolved later. Hence, one could just as easily list these personalities and events under the banner of another movement, one that pre-dated Ghadar or a coeval one that was much more encompassing than the majority Sikh constituency of Ghadar.

It would’ve been helpful if Ramnath had let the personalities in her book speak for themselves, to let them explain exactly how they identified themselves in anti-colonialism. However, Ramnath instead relies more on British intelligence and not on the actual Urdu, Persian, Punjabi etc. writings of these men. This is rather unsettling, considering the degree to which the British sensationalized and misinterpreted the statements and activities of these men. More importantly, it’s unfair to the activists that they are interpreted and judged by us (the readers) through the very British imperialists they were fighting. Ramnath seems to have studied Urdu, but it is not demonstrated in the work. Additionally, all the archival material was derived from English language archives. No German, Soviet or Afghan archival sources were used despite the immense importance of all these countries to the movements mentioned in the book.

The University of California Press seems to have published this book more for its appealing topic than any actual argument within it.
