Our Dying Planet: An Ecologist's View of the Crisis We Face, by Peter Sale

Coral reefs are on track to become the first ecosystem actually eliminated from the planet. So says leading ecologist Peter F. Sale in this crash course on the state of the planet. Sale draws from his own extensive work on coral reefs, and from recent research by other ecologists, to explore the many ways we are changing the earth and to explain why it matters. Weaving into the narrative his own firsthand field experiences around the world, Sale brings ecology alive while giving a solid understanding of the science at work behind today’s pressing environmental issues. He delves into topics including overfishing, deforestation, biodiversity loss, use of fossil fuels, population growth, and climate change while discussing the real consequences of our growing ecological footprint. Most important, this passionately written book emphasizes that a gloom-and-doom scenario is not inevitable, and as Sale explores alternative paths, he considers the ways in which science can help us realize a better future.

From the Inside Flap
" Our Dying Planet is the most powerful statement on the future of life on earth I have ever read. Starting with the title, which I admire greatly, it delivers the sort of honest, accurate, no-punches-pulled assessment you would expect from a scientist who has seen the problems first hand. Coral reefs appear set to be the first major ecosystem to go extinct. Few people know more about this than Peter Sale. If every scientist were to speak as convincingly as Sale, the public might finally grasp the seriousness of the course on which we've set our planet."—Randy Olson, author of Don’t Be Such a Scientist

“Peter Sale's book shows us the exquisite sensitivity of ecosystems to the consequences of human activity. This is the anthropocene epoch, a time when human beings have become a force of nature, altering properties of the biosphere on a geological scale. Read this and you will know it is very late and we must act.” —David Suzuki, author of The Sacred Balance and The Legacy

“Disruptions such as overfishing, forest desecration, ocean acidification and pollution, and the wholesale destruction of coral reefs have already changed the earth disastrously. These problems will not fix themselves. For an articulate and crucial discussion of the mess we've made — and with some small hope for the future — you must read this book."—Richard Ellis, author of The Empty Ocean and The Great Sperm Whale

“A bold and convincing explication of the forces inexorably leading to an environmental collapse, and sooner than most people think. Sale, a leading ecologist, tackles some sacred cows – including the implications of human population growth – and shows the many synergisms between impacts that would be devastating even if they acted alone – which they don’t. No one will read Our Dying Planet and remain complacent, but Sale sketches some promising paths out of our dilemma.”—Daniel Simberloff, coeditor of Encyclopedia of Biological Invasions

About the Author

Tough Love, With Science
By Jon at Uwindsor
Peter Sale is an able communicator of difficult news and in this book gives the reader his informed take on the major environmental crises facing us. These crises are essentially all global environmental "elephants in the room" as he sees them, and Sale uses science, plus his own life experiences as an ecologist to tell the story.
Sale's book is that of a leading coral reef scientist and ecologist of note. He has broad experience and in the book speaks cogently to all the major ecological crises confronting us. His narrative weaves together engaging autobiographical and firsthand field experiences from over the past forty years. The story is at once a kind of paean to snorkeling in some of the sweetest reef environments around the world and a compelling case for an objective way forward in a world of over-consumptiveness.
The book is clearly written including throughout little personal details often held in footnotes that bring the author front and centre, while remaining in the footnotes; the text is admirably objective for so personal a treatment of this subject.
Sale takes the reader on a fascinating tour of the world, mostly visiting marine field stations and coral reefs of the world that he has been to many times and examined closely over decades, and which he connects to current ecological realities. Along the way the reader is introduced in clear and engaging ways to ecological and demographic fundamentals -trophic level, age cohort, ecological footprint, biocapacity, etc., that help us understand modern day realities within the realms of fisheries ecology, coral reef biology, forestry and biodiversity patterns, as well as climate change.
The science is described clearly and its relevance is well demonstrated. Sale's gentle absence of patience for such non-nay-saying organizations as the FAO helps convey something of the real-world difficulties we face when it comes to real-world `solutions' to these large ecological crises. I highly recommend this excellent book.

A call for understanding and action
By Anna Mallin
Peter Sale is an academic. In his book, Our Dying Planet, he addresses a non-academic audience and reviews the ongoing changes in the natural environment in which we live. He states that we are now experiencing the "Holocene Extinction" - an extinction of species that may be proceeding at a much faster pace than at any previous time in our planet's history. Does this reduction of number of species matter? Perhaps not much on an individual level - the world's ecosystems can perhaps survive the loss of the Dodo. But at some point the cumulative effects will cause major disruptions, the tipping point will be exceeded and the world around us will become a very different place from the one we know.

What is the cause of our Holocene Extinction? The over-simplified answer (which does not do justice to Sale's full arguments) is - too many people consuming too many resources at a rate at which they cannot be replenished coupled with excessive use of fossil fuels.

Sale examines the importance of "ecological complexity" and recasts our understanding of "resilience" by suggesting that particular ecosystems (or perhaps particular "patches" of ecosystems) have "inertia" and can withstand a certain amount of disruption until such time as disruption is so overwhelming that the ecosystem, or patch, changes its character - for example from forest to desert or from sea-ice to open water.

Sale reminds us that technologies exist NOW to allow us to improve matters by replacing fossil fuels with energy from falling water, solar, wind, waves, etc. He states forcefully that we know the answers. We already know what to do. For example, reduce energy use by building to LEED standards, enlarge railway nets to reduce energy used in truck transport, encourage smaller numbers of children, etc. What we lack is public consensus and the political will to do it.

Sale's goal is to cause us all to come to a very widespread understanding of why we must change our ways - and to do so on ALL fronts. His hope is that this understanding will help to create a the sea change in public attitudes and behavior that may, finally, persuade politicians to pay attention to assuring that the global ecosystems remain habitable for our children and their children.

Sale's litany of unhappy news is presented with a lively and accessible writing style, peppered with frequent intriguing anecdotes from his research life (for example, observation of the real estate transactions of damsel fish) and some most intriguing real-life examples of "doing it right" - of hopeful management of the sort that might steer us away from the looming disasters. There IS hope - if we can only manufacture the concerted public and political will to reduce our reliance on fossil fuel and, most of all, to reduce our population growth.

On reefs and renewal
By jakeofish
Our tradition of environmental literature has been built by thinkers ranging from philosophers (Walden, Leopold), statesmen (Marsh, Gore), journalists (Kurlansky, Quammen), activists (Muir, Maathai), novelists (Abbey, Bass), and others of many and varied stripes.

But in my view, the most fundamental, and often the most penetrating, contributions to this body of thought come from research scientists. For environmental issues have at their core processes operating in the realms of ecology, oceanography, geology, molecular biology, evolutionary biology, climatology, and other disciplines of the physical and biological sciences. Therefore, the insights of Paul Ehrlich, E.O. Wilson, Jared Diamond and others of their ilk help us understand these challenges at their most fundamental level.

Joining this group of accomplished research scientists who have stepped out of the ivory tower to convey crucial messages much more far and wide steps Dr. Peter Sale. Dr. Sale is arguably the world's foremost expert on the ecology of coral reefs, and has spent a lifetime pushing the limits of our understanding of these complex and fascinating ecosystems. Now, in "Our Dying Planet," Sale uses coral reefs as a lens for understanding the challenges facing our planet and ourselves. For coral reefs sit at the nexus of nearly all of the major threats to environmental sustainability: climate change, overharvesting, pollution, watershed management, coastal development, and other impacts. Accordingly, they serve as the proverbial "canary in the coal mine" of where we might be headed if we don't change our ways.

But Sale uses coral reefs not simply as a lens, but also as a springboard. The same suite of threats jeopardizing the very existence of coral reefs are also bringing pressure to bear on forests, the larger ocean, and the global climate system. Sale turns his keen ecological insight toward these other critical systems as well, weaving together a story of a whole that will deteriorate with greater speed and force than the sum of its parts if we don't quickly recognize the reality of where we stand and the actions needed to steer a different course.

And this is the most important contribution of "Our Dying Planet". Despite its sobering name, and despite the dire picture it paints of how we are pushing limits that we don't fully understand, Sale offers a hopeful message. He describes very clear, achievable steps that we can take, including many that we have already taken in small doses but now need to scale up, to chart a different course toward ecological resilience and productivity, to the benefit of nature and ourselves.

Anyone who has met Dr. Sale (as I have) knows what a measured and thoughtful, yet sharp and really rather witty, demeanor he portrays. That intellect and wit comes across in his writing as well (his footnote about "fishers" on page 17 in particular gave me quite a chuckle). He clearly explains complex science and what it tell us about our possible future, gives it life through humor and anecdote, and pulls no punches with his warnings while still inspiring hope with his roadmap toward a better future. "Our Dying Planet" is well worth reading by anyone concerned with the fate of humanity and our world.

A bit schizophrenic in approach and tone.
By Craig Carlson
Admittedly, I had high expectations. I had heard many good things about this book and in many ways it is excellent. Unfortunately, in many ways it is schizophrenic and, though well-written, not carefully written. That was disappointing considering the book is intended as somewhat of an introduction to a general audience.

What I liked about the book is Goode's ability to present issues in wine making that would be very interesting to a general audience. His explanation of biodynamics is excellent, as were his explorations of corks, grafting and wine and the brain.

But here are some unfortunate problems with The Science of Wine that prevent it from being a great book.

The opening chapters on the natural history and viticulture of grape vines are good. But when Goode leaves the vineyard and begins explaining the wine making process, I would advise -- if you are not familiar with the winemaking process -- that you read an actual introduction to it before proceeding.

He jumps from the vineyard to the winery with a chapter on "whole-cluster ferments and carbonic maceration" and accelerates quickly making points out of left field, such as "In carbonic maceration there is therefore a fall in acidity levels that can be quite significant, with titratable acidity (TA) declining as much as 3.5 g/liter and pH increasing by up to 0.6 units."

Goode neither provides a background that gives the reader any context to what this means nor defines the terms. It's a statement that requires illumination -- which is the hard work required of a non-fiction writer. There are numerous examples of this in the book.

There are also editorial errors when Goode uses jargon such as the French word élevage, which refers to the development and early aging of wine before it's bottled. Five pages later you finally get a definition. One wonders whether Goode's editors gave the book a read-through before sending it off to the printer.

Finally, there are long passages in which Goode writes straight prose, followed by long passages where he relies heavily on interviewees to provide multi-sentence material information. The book seems to have two voices which I suspect is a result of repurposing text from news columns he's previously written.

I recommend The Science of Wine. I'm just not jumping up and down about it.

An important education and wonderful reading for all wine lovers
By APC Reviews
I thought that I knew a fair bit about wine. But after reading "The Science of Wine: From Vine to Glass" I realized that I had been stumbling around for years with a lot of second hand and received wisdom, some of which it turns out was part myth and lore more than fact. This is just a marvelous book for wine lovers. Admittedly, it is technical in many ways. But the author writes with just the right balance of erudition, knowledge, science and example to explain plant biology and wine making science, history and procedures so succinctly that the basic concepts become readily understandable. This is a wonderful book, and an invaluable resource for any wine lover wanting to know more about how the wine in their glass got there and tastes the way it does.

Understanding wine without needing an enology degree
By John R Windle
After years of drinking wine and reading periodicals I was looking for something that would help me separate the science from the hype. Jamie Goode has concisely, cleanly, and intelligently touched on subjects from terroir to tasting with objectivity. In the end he acknowledges the sum is greater than the parts, but understanding the parts helps us produce "and drink and enjoy" better wine.

Roughing It (Mark Twain Library), by Mark Twain

Mark Twain's humorous account of his six years in Nevada, San Francisco, and the Sandwich Islands is a patchwork of personal anecdotes and tall tales, many of them told in the "vigorous new vernacular" of the West. Selling seventy five thousand copies within a year of its publication in 1872, Roughing It was greeted as a work of "wild, preposterous invention and sublime exaggeration" whose satiric humor made "pretension and false dignity ridiculous." Meticulously restored from a variety of original sources, the text is the first to adhere to the author's wishes in thousands of details of wording, spelling, and punctuation, and includes all of the 304 first-edition illustrations. With its comprehensive and illuminating notes and supplementary materials, which include detailed maps tracing Mark Twain's western travels, this Mark Twain Library Roughing It must be considered the standard edition for readers and students of Mark Twain.

Amazon.com Review
There is no nicer surprise for a reader than to discover that an acknowledged classic really does deliver the goods. Mark Twain's Roughing It is just such a book. The adventure tale is a delight from start to finish and is just as engrossing today as it was 125 years ago when it first appeared.

Roughing It tells the true-ish escapades of Twain in the American West. Although he clearly "speaks with forked tongue," Roughing It is informative as well as humorous. From stagecoach travel to the etiquette of prospecting, the modern reader gains considerable insight into that much-fictionalized time and place. Do you know about sagebrush, for example? Sage-brush is very fair fuel, but as a vegetable it is a distinguished failure. Nothing can abide the taste of it but the jackass and his illegitimate child, the mule. But their testimony to its nutritiousness is worth nothing, for they will eat pine knots, or anthracite coal, or brass filings, or lead pipe, or old bottles, or anything that comes handy, and then go off looking as grateful as if they had had oysters for dinner. Roughing It is informally structured around the narrator's attempts to strike it rich. He meets a motley, colorful crew in the process; many mishaps occur, and it shouldn't surprise you that Twain does not emerge a man of means. But he withstands it all in such a relentless good humor that his misfortune inspires laughter. Roughing It is wonderful entertainment and reminds you how funny the world can be--even its grimmer districts--when you're traveling with the right writer.

From Library Journal
In this 1872, Twain reminisces about his five years of roaming around the country from 1861 to 1866. This edition contains the complete original text plus the original illustrations. Though pricey, this volume should be considered for collections specializing in Twain.

A fun read, and some history too
By Matthew Taylor
The genius of Mark Twain is that his work is still enjoyable, and funny, to this day. This book, originally published in 1871, is Twain's account of his journey from Missouri to Hawaii (called the Sandwich Islands in his day). He tells story after story of his adventures along the way, starting with the stagecoach ride on the Overland Stage Line to Carson City, Nevada, around 1861, and then telling of his stay in Nevada, then California, then his visit to Hawaii. The stories are informative, humorous, and all-around entertaining. He lampoons everybody he can--nobody is safe--including miners, pioneers (emigrants), politicians, Mormons, Blacks, American Indians, Chinese, newspaper reporters, "desperados", even himself on more than one occasion. Sometimes his stories are so outrageous that you wonder how much is true and how much is embellishment, or just outright fiction. Even he understands this by telling the reader on occasion that he has not made up a particular story, to demonstrate that truth is often stranger than fiction, but also to imply that he has taken liberties in other places in the book. (I wonder if the Mormon Church has ever banned this book for the things he says about them.) Even while he is being irreverent, however, he often demonstrates a sensitivity toward people, with an awareness of the situation of others that seems to me to be ahead of his time. For example, he has a chapter on the immigrant Chinese population in the West, and while he pokes fun at them in some respects, he spends the time detailing their lives and culture, as much as he could understand it, with a respect that was uncommon in his day.
I bought a copy of this book years ago because I am a native Californian, and knew that there was some material in here about California in the early days (my copy is an old hardcover published by Grosset and Dunlap). As Twain states in his Prefatory: "...There is quite a good deal of information in this book. I regret this very much, but really it could not be helped." I enjoyed reading about the "old West" from an eye-witness, although most of it deals with Nevada, not California. While some of it sounded familiar, like something from any Western-genre movie, other things were like nothing I had ever heard of before, describing the "Wild West" from an original point of view. In that respect, this book is a great resource.
This book falls short of five stars due to some minor flaws. He often digresses with text that is not only marginal to the point, but not even written by him, reprinting someone else's text. I skipped over some of that. He would also spend pages detailing coversations between other people that he could not have possibly remembered verbatim. While I understand that it was a common writing style of his day, it sounds like bad jounalism today. Those complaints aside, this is some great writing by Twain and some valuable American history.

ROUGHING IT
By G L Nelson
This "Mark Twain Project" paperback edition of ROUGHING IT is by far the best version for most readers. It is an excellent value. The 200 pages of "Explanatory Notes" at the end, add greatly to the modern reader's understanding of the 1860's "Wild West". The Early Western Mining Frontier comes vividly and colorfully to life, thanks to the Explanatory Notes' full illumination of the fascinating, often hilarious, eyewitness account of young Sam Clemens.

The 21st century reader now sees the momentous impact of Samuel Colt's "Navy Revolver" on frontier society, fully comprehends a "Stamp Mill's" importance to the silver mines of the Comstock Lode, and is in complete agreement about the "thoroughbrace's" necessity to the Overland Stage traveler's comfort! This edition also contains all 304 first edition illustrations, another great aid allowing the modern reader to take a virtual walk into a vanished time.

In the "Foreword" to this edition, Editor Harriet Elinor Smith notes, " The vernacular style of ROUGHING IT often seems surprisingly fresh to modern readers.....". I'm betting that many readers, younger ones especially, may approach this book with dread, only to become immersed in the rollicking adventure, and reach the end of ROUGHING IT with regret. The readers who return for a second, third or more reading, will discover many levels of depth to ROUGHING IT that will continue to entertain and educate reading after reading, year after year.

From the "Foreword" to this edition, Editor Smith also observes, "Although readers have long been entertained by ROUGHING IT, it has gradually become part of all serious study of American culture. Students of history have come to rely on it for accurate information about the period, and it has played a major role in shaping the myth of the "Wild West".......No examination of American popular culture would be complete without Mark Twain's imaginative reminiscence of what it was like to be "on the ground in person"".

So, if you are tired of all this bickering between the North and South, and feel it may be healthier to get away from the tensions, I hear tell there's a great silver strike in a new territory called "Nevada", near a place called "Virginia City". It's July 1861 and there is an Overland Stage westbound, St Joseph, Missouri to Carson City, Nevada Territory.

Buckle on your Navy Colt and climb aboard!

Thank Goodness!
By Eric Wilson
Twain is a storyteller in the old-fashioned sense of the word. He spins his tales, weaves his lies, and draws us in with the skill of a magician. Dividing fact from fiction is not always easy in a work such as this. "Roughing It" has moments of obvious hyperbole, grounded by stories of true difficulty. Yet throughout, Twain finds a way to make us smile, even laugh out loud. We are amused by the eccentric characters and turns of events which he describe, and find that we are not so far different as we might like to think.
The story follows Twain's journey as he travels west by stagecoach, train, wagon, horse, and ship. He meets surly frontiersmen, murderers, thieves, fortune-hunters, and men of ill-repute. Even here, he finds the good beneath the dirt. I especially enjoyed his anecdote of Scotty Briggs, a man trying to hire a minister to attend over his friend's funeral. Hilarious stuff! And so true to human nature.
Throughout his account, Twain makes a habit of degrading his own work ethic, nudging us in the ribs as he highlights his aversion to labor. With this in mind, the title seems to be a tongue-in-cheek affair. In fact, I found his accounts much less rustic and more modern than expected. Sure, we can travel across the U.S. quicker these days, but the politics and economics of Twain's age parallel our own. Will we never learn? Isn't this the point of history, to avoid repeating our errors?
Although criticized in his day for using coarse language and a working-class, Twain held to his guns and gave us some magnificent humor with which to swallow his pointed barbs. He was a master satirist, and even in a travelogue such as this, his views shine through. And thank goodness! A century and a half later, I'm thankful for his insights.

Caring: A Relational Approach to Ethics and Moral Education, by Nel Noddings

With numerous examples to supplement her rich theoretical discussion, Nel Noddings builds a compelling philosophical argument for an ethics based on natural caring, as in the care of a mother for her child.

In Caring—now updated with a new preface and afterword reflecting on the ongoing relevance of the subject matter—the author provides a wide-ranging consideration of whether organizations, which operate at a remove from the caring relationship, can truly be called ethical. She discusses the extent to which we may truly care for plants, animals, or ideas. Finally, she proposes a realignment of education to encourage and reward not just rationality and trained intelligence, but also enhanced sensitivity in moral matters.

The Final Leap: Suicide on the Golden Gate Bridge, by John Bateson

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most beautiful and most photographed structures in the world. It’s also the most deadly. Since it opened in 1937, more than 1,500 people have died jumping off the bridge, making it the top suicide site on earth. It’s also the only international landmark without a suicide barrier. Weaving drama, tragedy, and politics against the backdrop of a world-famous city, The Final Leap is the first book ever written about Golden Gate Bridge suicides. John Bateson leads us on a fascinating journey that uncovers the reasons for the design decision that led to so many deaths, provides insight into the phenomenon of suicide, and examines arguments for and against a suicide barrier. He tells the stories of those who have died, the few who have survived, and those who have been affected—from loving families to the Coast Guard, from the coroner to suicide prevention advocates.

From the Inside Flap
“Extremely well done. It’s the single most important contribution to the debate surrounding suicide and the Golden Gate Bridge to date.” -Thomas Joiner, author of Lonely at the Top and Why People Die by Suicide

“John Bateson takes us on a gripping journey through the lives of everyone who has been affected. He boldly counters myths with facts, eloquently speaks of the unspeakable, and helps us all to care about those who, in an instant, stopped caring about themselves. This book stirs the soul to fight for the day when the protective net is finally cast under the Golden Gate Bridge, when it will become a national monument to both beauty and compassion.”—John Draper, Director of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

About the Author
John Bateson is Executive Director of the Contra Costa Crisis Center in Contra Costa County, California and the author of Building Hope. He has served on the steering committee of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. In 2007 he was appointed to a blue-ribbon committee charged with creating the California Strategic Plan on Suicide Prevention.

Far Too Many Broken Hearts ...
By Mark A. Johnson
Most people do not know how many deaths occur at the bridge month in and month out every year. Most people also don't know that a net that would prevent those deaths was approved by the Bridge Authority in 2008, but was never installed because the money has not been allocated.

I was in that population of "most people" blissfully unaware of those two facts until my son jumped to his death from the bridge last year.

Mr.Bateson has written a thorough, eloquent and fair history of suicide on the bridge and the madness of allowing these deaths to continue. This book should be in the hands of many more people -- and particularly those who wish to change the two facts above.

Thank you
By P. Sennett
I want to thank John Bateson for his book about suicide on the Golden Gate Bridge. I will never look at the
Golden Gate the same way again and indeed I have an entirely different regard for San Francisco. I used to see the place as a progessive city, now I see it is a back water town peopled by governing forces (Bridge District Commissioners of the Golden Gate) who are provincial snobs and ignorant. Every time I cross a bridge, over pass or see a tall structure in the Chicago area, I am looking for a suicide barrier. The tall fencing I often see on these structures is probably there not to keep people from leaping off, as much as it there to keep people from throwing trash on traffice below. Thank you John Bateson for your excellent book covering all aspects of the Bridge, barriers, and suicide: topics that are new to me except that I had to look back over my life and realize that I have known eight peolpe who have died by suicide.

Bateson Boldly Lifts the Veil On A San Francisco Secret
By Jones Matter
With literary ease and journalistic candor, John Bateson's indispensable read, "The Final Leap," gives readers the first comprehensive look at one of San Francisco's dark secrets. Since its construction in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge (one of the Seven Wonders of the World,) has been the site of more suicides than any other place on the planet. With his accessible style of story-telling and wealth of information, Bateson ably takes us on a journey over the 76 years of the bridge's life-span and explores the lives of all those who have been involved with one of the nearly 2,000 people who have leapt to their death. From the people who have leapt from the bridge, to the loved ones they have left behind, to the police officers, coroners, and phsychologists who deal with the aftermath of a jump, to the organization that oversees the daily operations of the bridge, Bateson covers all bases, as he fearlessly addresses the taboo topics of mental illness and suicide in this valuable and timely book.

Venice Incognito: Masks in the Serene Republic, by James H. Johnson

"The entire town is disguised," declared a French tourist of eighteenth-century Venice. And, indeed, maskers of all ranks—nobles, clergy, imposters, seducers, con men—could be found mixing at every level of Venetian society. Even a pious nun donned a mask and male attire for her liaison with the libertine Casanova. In Venice Incognito, James H. Johnson offers a spirited analysis of masking in this carnival-loving city. He draws on a wealth of material to explore the world view of maskers, both during and outside of carnival, and reconstructs their logic: covering the face in public was a uniquely Venetian response to one of the most rigid class hierarchies in European history. This vivid account goes beyond common views that masking was about forgetting the past and minding the muse of pleasure to offer fresh insight into the historical construction of identity.

From the Inside Flap
"Fascinating and richly developed. Venice Incognito is a contribution both to urban studies and to the carnivalesque."—Natalie Zemon Davis, University of Toronto

“Venice Incognito is a brilliant reassessment of Venetian carnival and the peculiar phenomenon of masking in early modern Venice. Johnson's wide-ranging, insightful, and imaginative scholarship is matched by his fluid and accessible writing style. This book is that all-too-rare commodity: a scholarly page-turner.”

—Patricia Fortini Brown, author of Private Lives in Renaissance Venice

“This is a beautiful book about a strange subject: the custom among Venetian aristocrats of wearing masks in public. One of the most original works in early modern scholarship I have read in a long time, Venice Incognito will have a permanent place on most early modern historians’ shelves and will be essential reading for performance studies and theater history.”

—Edward Muir, author of The Culture Wars of the Late Renaissance

“In this fascinating book, the author cleverly balances the traditional concept of masking as an anti-authoritarian culture of dissembling with the idea of the 'honest mask,' which defends rank and the established order, and produces an excellent, nuanced, and well-written account of the carnivalesque in eighteenth-century Venice.”

—Aileen Ribeiro, author of Dress in Eighteenth-Century Europe

“In this intriguing and thoroughly researched book, James Johnson takes the reader through the crowded calli, campi, and canals of Venice in search of the varied meanings of the mask in the history and culture of that city on the water. From masking’s first recorded appearance in the thirteenth century to its ubiquity in the carnival decline of eighteenth-century Venice, from the dissimulations of Giacomo Casanova to Arlecchino and the commedia dell’arte stage, from the social anonymity of the gambling halls to the socially charged debate over Goldoni’s radical unmasking of the actor, Venice Incognito traces the shifting functions of the mask and its implications. Just as importantly, the book challenges much conventional wisdom about masking and carnival itself.”

—David Rosand, author of Painting in Sixteenth-Century Venice

Historical but fun account of masking in Venice.
By tmd
A lot of very interesting information about the culture of masking in Venice. There is no exact explanation given as to why the Venetians began this unusual custom. No one seems to know why or exactly when masking started but the stories that are told in this book are wonderful and they spark the imagination. Especially interesting is the opening story of Casanova and how he used masks to his amorous benefit. A good read for a historical narrative.

A thrilling trip to Venice
By Andrew Appel
Johnson is a powerful cultural historian and this work, so different from his Listening in Paris, is an exciting voyage to Venice during which incognito tells us so much about the city and the people.

Vita: Life in a Zone of Social Abandonment, by João Biehl

Zones of social abandonment are emerging everywhere in Brazil’s big cities—places like Vita, where the unwanted, the mentally ill, the sick, and the homeless are left to die. This haunting, unforgettable story centers on a young woman named Catarina, increasingly paralyzed and said to be mad, living out her time at Vita. Anthropologist João Biehl leads a detective-like journey to know Catarina; to unravel the cryptic, poetic words that are part of the “dictionary” she is compiling; and to trace the complex network of family, medicine, state, and economy in which her abandonment and pathology took form.

An instant classic, Vita has been widely acclaimed for its bold fieldwork, theoretical innovation, and literary force. Reflecting on how Catarina’s life story continues, this updated edition offers the reader a powerful new afterword and gripping new photographs following Biehl and Eskerod’s return to Vita. Anthropology at its finest, Vita is essential reading for anyone who is grappling with how to understand the conditions of life, thought, and ethics in the contemporary world.

Between Art and Ethnography
By Etienne RP
Haunting. Arresting. Inspiring. These are some of the adjectives that come to mind to characterize João Biehl's Vita : Life in a Zone of Social Abandonment. These words are usually used in the context of a work of art or a fiction. And indeed, as other reviewers have noted, Vita reads like a novel, and it presents itself like an art book, with its black-and-white photographs and coated pages. Vita carries anthropology to new grounds where boundaries between aesthetics and social science are blurred, and engages the reader with her senses and emotions as well as her intellect and academic references. At the same time, Vita is a work of social science, distinguished by the prestigious Margaret Mead Award of the American Anthropological Association, and it has become an instant classic , as testified by the revised edition by the University of California Press. How can we disentangle art from science, and how to account for the lasting impression this text makes on the reader's mind?

According to João Biehl, Vita, a rehabilitation center for drug addicts and social outcasts in Porto Alegre, is much more than a locale. This is how an informant introduced the center to the author: "It's a dump site for human beings. You must go there. You will see what people do to people, what it means to be humans these days." And he was right. As Biehl discovered, "Vita is the end-station on the road to poverty; it is the place where living beings go to when they are no longer considered people." "Zones of social abandonment" such as Vita "accelerate the death of the unwanted". They make visible "realities that exist through and beyond formal governance and that determine the life course of an increasing number of poor people who are not part of mapped populations."

One strategy for ethnographic writing would have been to make a theory out of this single case study, and to develop a social critique of the political economy that makes places like Vita possible. This is in part what the author does when he characterizes Vita as a "zone of abandonment" and its occupants are "abandonados" or "ex-humans". These concepts, used or accepted by the respondents themselves, allow to move beyond the case for moral indignation and to operate the shift from the particular to the general that represents ethnography's core method of inquiring. The abandonados do not just speak for themselves; they are "the carriers and witnesses of the ways in which the social destinies of the poorest and the sickest are ordered." They show the limitation of policies and projects of social inclusion for which the municipal government of Porto Alegre and the state of Brazil under Workers Party's rule are often credited.

João Biehl's concepts of social abandonment and ex-humans resonate with the theoretical constructs of authors with which he enters into dialogue: Michel Foucaults notions of "biopolitics" and "neo-liberal governmentality", or Giorgio Agamben's philosophical descriptions of "bare life" and "homo sacer". These short theoretical engagements with renowned modern philosophers are weaved into the text or developed into endnotes, and they will be of interest to academic readers. They may open the space for future epistemological developments or new lines or ethnographic inquiry. The book will also be valuable for social activists or human rights militants, who will see in the descriptions of the zones of liminality such as Vita a vindication of their fight for justice and recognition. As Biehl underscores, "the ethnography of Vita makes it painfully clear that there are places in the present, even in a state founded on the premise of inviolable human rights, where these rights no longer exist, where the living subjects of marginal institutions are constituted as something other, between life and death."

But Vita is not a theoretical treatise or an ethnographic description of a single locale. It is an anthropology of a single person or, as the author puts it, "the thick description of a single life". There are precedents in the discipline for such endeavour. One can mention in passing works as diverse as Laurence Caillet's The House of Yamazaki, the life story of a Japanese business woman raised in the countryside and who became the manager of an upclass hairdressing salon, or Vincent Crapanzano's Tuhami: Portrait of a Moroccan, a post-modern experiment in psychoanalytic ethnography. But Vita's portrait of Catarina is different. For a start, the central character should never have been allowed to have her say. Successively diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia, post-partum psychosis, unspecified psychosis, and then mood disorder, she had been muted by the institutions of medicine, family, and social policy.

Her abandonment reflected her progressive physical deterioration. The author and his wife first met her training on a stationary bicycle. Thereafter, her limp became more severe, and she was assigned to the immobility of a wheelchair. Her complaints from the ailments she suffered, described as "rheumatism" or "chronic spasms", were never heard by the doctors and social workers who handled her case and who kept her heavily sedated. Pharmaceuticals substituted for her estrangement from social links, and she was categorized as a case of mental illness without due consideration for her physical condition or social environment. Despite the crumbling of all hope, she was able to cling to life and to articulate her interior life in the diaries she constantly kept. Referred to as her "dictionary" ("I write so that I don't forget the words"), these lists of words and sentences scribbled with a trembling hand mirror her personal struggles and provide a document of extraordinary power.

Catarina's dialogue with João Biehl goes much beyond the ethnographic encounter between the anthropologist and his informant. It is she who sends him on a quest in order not only to recollect her life story, but to recapture her connection to the living. The result is "a progressive unravelling of the knotted reality that was Catarina's condition - misdiagnosis, excessive medication, complicity among health professionals and family in creating her status as a psychotic - and the discovery of the cause of her illness, which turned out to be a genetic and not a psychiatric condition." It is this connection with Catarina that allows the author to move beyond a monography on Vita to a multi-sited ethnography of the web of institutions, medical and familial, that produced her abandonment. As Biehl notes, "her presumed madness was intimately related to changing political and labor regimes as well as to pharmaceutical forms of knowledge and care that were embedded in nets of relatedness, intimacies, and betrayals."

In part, the book reads like a detective story. There are unexpected turns, progressive discovery of the character's background, disclosure of secrets buried deep in medical archives or family closets, and an astonishing finale, which connects Catarina's body to the most generic aspects of human life. Vita is also a first-person narrative, where the author is always present in the account. The book is truly a collaborative work or a dialogic construction of knowledge between the two characters, and its progression mirrors the development of their joint work. Catarina's words, her "dictionary", transform the ethnography into an elegy - we must read them "in the same way we face poetry." They express "the unspeakable of the ordinary", and demonstrate that "a human form of life that is no longer worth living is not just bare life - language and desire continue."

Inhumane!

Disturbing story of a woman who was ill from a genetically "physical" disease where no one wanted to care for her & family abandoned her by way of a politically corrupt healthcare system and many patients were not only abandoned but horribly abused.
