Restless Dead: Encounters between the Living and the Dead in Ancient Greece, by Sarah Iles Johnston

During the archaic and classical periods, Greek ideas about the dead evolved in response to changing social and cultural conditions—most notably changes associated with the development of the polis, such as funerary legislation, and changes due to increased contacts with cultures of the ancient Near East. In Restless Dead, Sarah Iles Johnston presents and interprets these changes, using them to build a complex picture of the way in which the society of the dead reflected that of the living, expressing and defusing its tensions, reiterating its values and eventually becoming a source of significant power for those who knew how to control it. She draws on both well-known sources, such as Athenian tragedies, and newer texts, such as the Derveni Papyrus and a recently published lex sacra from Selinous.

Topics of focus include the origin of the goes (the ritual practitioner who made interaction with the dead his specialty), the threat to the living presented by the ghosts of those who died dishonorably or prematurely, the development of Hecate into a mistress of ghosts and its connection to female rites of transition, and the complex nature of the Erinyes. Restless Dead culminates with a new reading of Aeschylus' Oresteia that emphasizes how Athenian myth and cult manipulated ideas about the dead to serve political and social ends.

From the Inside Flap
"[This work] will represent the principal study of ancient Greek beliefs in the intervention of the dead, a topic of acute relevance to the study of classical literature, Greek religion, and the later cultures that spawned curse tablets and versions of Christianity."—David Frankfurter, author of Religion in Roman Egypt

"This is an incontestably useful book. . . . The author's scholarship is remarkable and her competence indisputable. Her laudably courageous and original analysis of the Erinyes leads us from archaic poetry, via the purificatory rituals and reforms of cult brought about by the mysterious Epimenides, to the Orphic tradition recently discovered in the Derveni papyrus—all of which enables Sarah Johnston to conclude by proposing an enthralling rereading of Aeschylus' Oresteia."—Philippe Borgeaud, author of The Cult of Pan in Ancient Greece

Sarah Iles Johnston is Arts and Humanities Distinguished Professor of Religion and Professor of Classics at the Ohio State University. Her many books include Ancient Greek Divination and, with Fritz Graf, Ritual Texts for the Afterlife: Orpheus and the Bacchic Gold Tablets.

Deep Things out of Darkness: A History of Natural History, by John G. T. Anderson

Natural history, the deliberate observation of the environment, is arguably the oldest science. From purely practical beginnings as a way of finding food and shelter, natural history evolved into the holistic, systematic study of plants, animals, and the landscape. Deep Things out of Darkness chronicles the rise, decline, and ultimate revival of natural history within the realms of science and public discourse. Ecologist John G. T. Anderson focuses his account on the lives and contributions of an eclectic group of men and women, from John Ray, John Muir, Charles Darwin, and Rachel Carson, who endured remarkable hardships and privations in order to learn more about their surroundings. Written in an engaging narrative style and with an extensive bibliography of primary sources, the book charts the journey of the naturalist’s endeavor from prehistory to the present, underscoring the need for natural history in an era of dynamic environmental change.

Review
"An engaglng writing style. . . . Highly recommended."--D.A. Lovejoy"Choice" (08/01/2013)

From the Inside Flap
“A sweeping work of passion and erudition, Deep Things Out of Darkness deftly traces the rise, decline, and recent revival of natural history in the West. Through a series of carefully crafted biographical vignettes of famous naturalists—from Aristotle to Rachel Carson—Anderson highlights the accomplishments of the men and women who have struggled to comprehend the earth’s teeming biodiversity."--Mark V. Barrow, Jr., author of Nature’s Ghosts: Confronting Extinction from the Age of Jefferson to the Age of Ecology

"This book resonates with the persistent joy of discovery. We are invited into the lives of naturalists known and unknown, and we get to see the world as they saw it, showing us the path our craft has taken through the deep woods of time. Anderson explores the evolving ecology of natural history, underlining the impact of social pressures and the individual passions of those who shaped our view of the natural world. Deep Things is a must-read for those who call themselves naturalists—and many more of us should!"--Joshua Tewksbury, Walker Professor of Natural History, University of Washington

“A remarkable work of scholarship that reads like a spirited conversation with a very smart friend. Anderson has delved into the depths of original historical texts and re-emerged to write an engaging story of the human quest to understand our more-than-human neighbors. An invaluable resource for scholars, and—more important—a fun read for us all.”--Thomas L. Fleischner, Director, Natural History Institute, Prescott College

a wonderful read
By mulsh
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Part that enjoyment comes from the crisp and informative writing but much of it comes from the assorted subjects. The book is a thoughtful and chronological history and biography of Natural History and the scientists, writers and amateurs who have made the field what it is today. The author's enthusiasm for this subject is evident through out and highly contagious.

I spent a happy rainy Sunday curled up with this book. Though jam packed with well researched information, it is not a mere scholarly tome, but a highly entertaining and well written read. This book is a must for anyone who enjoys history and stories from history.

The Best Up To Date History of Natural History
By David B Richman
I picked up this wonderful book in a local book store a few months ago and just finished reading it. John G. T. Anderson has written the best defense of ecology and natural history in "Deep Things Out of Darkness" that I have ever run across. As a former curator of a small specialized museum (the Arthropod Museum) at a state university I have always thought that field biology (natural history, ecology, taxonomy and evolutionary biology) had been getting short shrift to laboratory studies. In reality we need both as for example DNA work can be very useful in reworking relationships and developing models of populations that still must be ground truthed in the field. Field work is very difficult as the variables multiply and interact, but it must be done if we are to gain even a semblance of what happens in the real world. Fortunately we seem to be (at least in part because of such biologists as E. O. Wilson) resuming our interest in these vital studies. Anderson has documented the search for answers to important biological questions in the world of oceans, forests, lakes, marshes, deserts, mountains and prairies, but he has done it in a way that easily engrosses the reader, even if they are not biologists. This is no dry treatment of a merely antiquated academic subject, but the fascinating tale of difficulty and hardship that led to many of the most important insights into our natural world. This book also demonstrates that we need more workers in these areas to help us deal with the current and coming environmental crises. I recommend it highly!

Embracing the crossroads that made the region distinctive this book reveals how American families have always been characterized by greater diversity than idealizations of the traditional family have allowed. The essays show how family life figured prominently in relations to larger struggles for conquest and control.

From the Inside Flap
“On the Borders of Love and Power explores the intimate intersections of race, gender, and empire among families in the American West. The editors have gathered provocative essays by the best-known historians of family and gender in the region. This volume captures the breadth and depth of contemporary research in the field and will influence scholars for years to come.”—Albert L. Hurtado, author of Herbert Eugene Bolton: Historian of the American Borderlands

"This important book, full of fine scholarship, explores the history of the American West through intimate and richly rendered portraits of kinship and family relations. Emphasizing the centrality of cross-cultural encounters and the “micro-politics” of family formation within the broader context of colonial “macro-politics” and nation building, these compelling and accessible essays provide a deeply textured understanding of the history of the region. This volume will certainly inspire historians of the Western United States, as well as those of colonialism, empire, and national expansion in other regions, to focus more closely on these intimate realms in their own research."—James F. Brooks, president, School for Advanced Research, Santa Fe, and author of Captives & Cousins: Slavery, Kinship, and Community in the Southwest Borderlands

An eye-opener on how family shapes history
By Tamarack Song
If you think you know how the West was won (or lost, as your perspective prescribes), I encourage you to sit down with this book, which is essentially an exposé of relationship dynamics in the colonial Southwest. Although the cultures, allegiances, and motivations of colonizers varied regionally across the West, the transformational effect on both aboriginal and colonial kinship systems was largely the same. The relationship models brought forth in this volume's essays, then, aptly serve as metaphors for the West as a whole.

The history of cultural transformation lies not in the grand movements of armies and borders, nor in the political and religious tides that wash over an area, but rather in the textures of marriages, adoptions, and labor relations. Whether motivated by greed or necessity, affection or disdain, people find ways around established systems and mores, and in doing so script a history that oftentimes renders alien the conventional historical accounts. On the Borders of Love and Power is one such people's history.

From the myth of Kit Carson to the Southwest's own brand of slavery, from the many shades of assimilation to motley human amalgamations struggling to find identity as families, I find this book to be as thrilling as fiction, and more sentient and revealing than any cultural history I have read.

Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health (California Studies in Food and Culture), by Marion Nestle

We all witness, in advertising and on supermarket shelves, the fierce competition for our food dollars. In this engrossing exposé, Marion Nestle goes behind the scenes to reveal how the competition really works and how it affects our health. The abundance of food in the United States--enough calories to meet the needs of every man, woman, and child twice over--has a downside. Our over-efficient food industry must do everything possible to persuade people to eat more--more food, more often, and in larger portions--no matter what it does to waistlines or well-being.

Like manufacturing cigarettes or building weapons, making food is big business. Food companies in 2000 generated nearly $900 billion in sales. They have stakeholders to please, shareholders to satisfy, and government regulations to deal with. It is nevertheless shocking to learn precisely how food companies lobby officials, co-opt experts, and expand sales by marketing to children, members of minority groups, and people in developing countries. We learn that the food industry plays politics as well as or better than other industries, not least because so much of its activity takes place outside the public view.

Editor of the 1988 Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition and Health, Nestle is uniquely qualified to lead us through the maze of food industry interests and influences. She vividly illustrates food politics in action: watered-down government dietary advice, schools pushing soft drinks, diet supplements promoted as if they were First Amendment rights. When it comes to the mass production and consumption of food, strategic decisions are driven by economics--not science, not common sense, and certainly not health. No wonder most of us are thoroughly confused about what to eat to stay healthy.

An accessible and balanced account, Food Politics will forever change the way we respond to food industry marketing practices. By explaining how much the food industry influences government nutrition policies and how cleverly it links its interests to those of nutrition experts, this path-breaking book helps us understand more clearly than ever before what we eat and why.

From the Inside Flap
"In this fascinating book we learn how powerful, intrusive, influential, and invasive big industry is and how alert we must constantly be to prevent it from influencing not only our own personal nutritional choices, but those of our government agencies. Marion Nestle has presented us with a courageous and masterful exposé."—Julia Child

"This remarkable book is essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand how it has come to be that the richest nation in the world is eating itself to death…. Straight reporting about the shaping of food policy, as this volume makes clear, is certain to offend some very powerful players."—Joan Dye Gussow, author of This Organic Life

"Food politics underlie all politics in the United States. There is no industry more important to Americans, more fundamentally linked to our well-being and the future well-being of our children. Nestle reveals how corporate control of the nation's food system limits our choices and threatens our health. If you eat, you should read this book."—Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation

"'Blockbuster' is one of the best ways that I could describe this book…. A major contribution to understanding the interaction of politics and science, especially the science of nutrition, it is of extreme value to virtually all policy makers and to everyone concerned with the American diet."—Sheldon Margen, editor of the Berkeley Wellness Letter

"A devastating analysis of how the naked self-interest of America's largest industry influences and compromises nutrition policy and government regulation of food safety. . . . A clear translation of often obscure studies and cases, the writing is accessible and lively."—Warren Belasco, author of Appetite for Change

Good book
By Autamme_dot_com
At times you might be forgiven for thinking that surely food can be left free of politics, when so much else in the world is tied up with political string. Sorry, but politics plays a big place here too!

Whether it is public policy and politics dictating what we should eat and drink on health grounds, or should that be "health" grounds, geopolitics with us being encouraged to favour produce from country X instead of country Y for various reasons or just plain business politics, with companies lobbying politicians to help further their own means, food and politics are tied together. Depressing reading, for sure, but this book provides a good non-hectoring read of this subject in a tenth anniversary edition of a classic work.

The food industry is big business and yet this academically-minded book does a good job in opening our eyes to what is actually going on in the wider world, without it sounding like there is a conspiracy behind every door. Written from a U.S. perspective the reader should not, however, be under the misapprehension that things are only an "American problem". It is just that perhaps their own country is less open and thus more things are hidden out of view. Will you be able to look at things again in the same light?

Making food is big business and we are encouraged to consume more than we need. Cutting costs to maximise profits often leads to the food that we eat is not necessarily good for us. Convenience foods sound oh-so-convenient until you notice the chemical soup that often accompanies them. There is a reason why various "corners can be cut", totally legally, that maximise profits and waistlines alike. Ah, but there are pesky government regulations that get in the way of free trade and protect the customer, aren't there? Well, yes, there are regulations but the idea for these regulations doesn't just come from thin air. Big companies with vested interests invest heavily in lobbying, strong-arming weaker countries and elbowing smaller competitors out of the way. It sounds paranoid but nonetheless...

Through this book you will get a much more informed picture of what is going on. You still might be powerless to change things but a better informed consumer can at least attempt to mitigate change even if they cannot influence it. Things are only going to get worse as technological advances are realised. Already the world is aware of GM (genetically modified) food and the pros and cons of this, but more and more foodstuffs are coming via a laboratory and they are not there just to make things cheap and tasty. Far from it..

A great index is provided at the end of this very thought-provoking book and, for those who either doubt the veracity of what they are reading or who wish to learn even more there is a fanatical amount of notes and further reading citations as befits a serious academic work. However it must be stressed that this is an accessible book for the "average reader" but you would be best to set aside some quality time to read and digest its contents. Prepare to be shocked, amazed and possibly sickened by what you read. Tobacco and "Big Pharma" are already painted as villains in many sections of society and, at the time of writing this review, the food industry is under scrutiny in Europe for the criminal mislabelling of horse meat and passing it off in the food chain. After reading this book you might start to wonder what the next scandal will be and wonder just how it has been allowed to get to this stage...

Very enlightening!

I am not finished with the book yet, but it's filled with great information regarding the relationship between government agencies and what is communicated to the public regarding healthy nutrition. I recommend this read for anyone who wants to understand what's behind how hard it is to eat/live healthy without the hype given by companies only in it for the money.

Chilling and Timely - Well referenced
By Professor
An alarming read for anyone in the healthcare field. Nestles major premise is that eating less would improve health and this is a challenge because this is in direct opposition to the food industries goal of making a profit. Her message is that involvement of the regulatory agencies should be more independent of the food industry. As so many of our chronic illnesses are cause by obesity or influenced by it - she makes a case for why we should all be concerned where we are heading.

Particularly chilling are the details about marketing to children. In addition, the marketing tactics were a slight surprise to me as I am a new reader in this area of health policy. Nestle dissects the subtle nuances of the dietary recommendations and explains how the food industry shapes those recommendations. Of course these tactics arent illegal but when the food industry is involved with shaping the recommendations - the ethical issues become clear. Nestle suggest we should be cautious of research because the food industry influences which research gets published and even reframes the findings to be favorable to products.

A scholarly read that is approachable as well. I liked the liked that the book because it weaves an interesting narrative in with copious references.

How Not to Be Eaten: The Insects Fight Back, by Gilbert Waldbauer

All animals must eat. But who eats who, and why, or why not? Because insects outnumber and collectively outweigh all other animals combined, they comprise the largest amount of animal food available for potential consumption. How do they avoid being eaten? From masterful disguises to physical and chemical lures and traps, predatory insects have devised ingenious and bizarre methods of finding food. Equally ingenious are the means of hiding, mimicry, escape, and defense waged by prospective prey in order to stay alive. This absorbing book demonstrates that the relationship between the eaten and the eater is a central—perhaps the central—aspect of what goes on in the community of organisms. By explaining the many ways in which insects avoid becoming a meal for a predator, and the ways in which predators evade their defensive strategies, Gilbert Waldbauer conveys an essential understanding of the unrelenting coevolutionary forces at work in the world around us.

The Insect World's Arms Race
By Rob Hardy
We have more insects, and more insect species, than any other animals. On land and in freshwater, in most places, if you weighed all the insects and all the other animals, the insects would win. Because insects are numerous and ubiquitous, they are also the largest and most reliable animal foodstuff, and though we in the west don't often snack on them (though we enjoy their cousins such as crabs), birds, spiders, scorpions, frogs, mammals and other creatures (including other insects) benefit from insects as a source of nutrition. And the insects aren't going to stand still for it. Well, some of them are, for standing still is a good protective tactic for some. It, and all the other means that insects use for protection, are detailed in _How Not to Be Eaten: The Insects Fight Back_ (University of California Press) by entomologist Gilbert Waldbauer. Waldbauer has written plenty of scientific papers, but like his valuable _What Good Are Bugs?_, this volume is a guide to help everyone appreciate insects more. Each insect is a little miracle of evolution, and they have many surprising ways of avoiding becoming someone's meal. And then their predators have evolved further means to overcome those obstacles. Waldbauer says the purpose of the ten chapters here is to "elucidate the strategies and counterstrategies in the everlasting evolutionary arms race between predators and prey." His book is beautifully organized by specific tactics.

One of the tactics is not surprising at all to anyone who has turned on a kitchen light and found a cockroach on the floor. Instantaneously, the cockroach flees (and if it is in my kitchen, it usually gets away before I can stomp on it). Fleeing is a fine tactic, and that cockroach will duck into a dark crevice before you know it. Grasshoppers and others jump, propelled by strong muscles in the back legs. Click beetles straighten their bodies out with a click and fly into the air without using leg muscles. Many insects are hidden by camouflage that is nothing exotic, like the color green for a leaf dweller, or a mottled brown for one that stays on the ground or on tree trunks. The more elaborate deceptions of camouflage can be spectacular, even witty. A caterpillar in India looks the perfect double of a bird dropping, earning praise from an observer in 1892, who was struck by "the skill with which the colouring rendered the varying surfaces, the dried portion at the top, then the main portion, moist , viscid, soft, and the glistening globule at the end. A skilled artist working with all materials at his command could not have done it better." Plenty of moths and other insects have eye spots; often the insect is camouflaged and unremarkable, but when disturbed will spread its wings to show eyespots, sometimes complete with a highlight on the "pupil." Eyespots represent a bluffing offense strategy, and insects do a lot of such bluffing. It has been shown in the lab that birds and other insect eaters can reliably recognize insects that will taste bad after trying to eat just one of them; they learn the important lesson fast. They are helped in the learning if the insect is dramatically marked with warning colors, the same bright yellows, orange, and reds that we humans use for our warning signs on the roads. So mimics take advantage of such learning; they might be tasty, but if the predator thinks they are not, they are safe. Some jet-black darkling beetles found in the desert have that black color as a warning, since they stand out on desert sands; and the warning is a true one, for when they are threatened, they stand on their heads, put their abdomens in the air, and ready themselves to spray a repellant from glands at the tip of the abdomen. But other beetles in the desert have adopted not only the black warning color, but also the headstand posture; in their case, they are bluffing, because they have no repellant glands, but the bluff works.

The tactics of the insects are clever, and the tactics of researchers trying to understand them are clever, too. Waldbauer describes many field and laboratory experiments; I did not realize that one of the problems in insect labs is cockroach infestations: "Entomologists can't use insecticides in their laboratories; insecticides kill not only cockroaches but also the insects that are the subjects of our experiments." One experiment described here involves the entomologist using a casting rod to present lizards with tethered butterflies with and without warning colors, and tallying the degree to which the lizards responded to the butterflies cast to them. There are many such experiments reported here, each adding a little bit to our understanding of the complex behavior and ecological fit of these creatures. Waldbauer's curiosity and enthusiasm is present on every page, and although insects may annoy, impoverish, or sicken us, you won't be able to read the descriptions here without admiration for their superb adaptations.

The Red Queen Principle!
By LastRanger
In this marvelous little book (less that 200 pages) Gilbert Waldbauer gives you an inside look at a Darwinian Arms Race between predator and pray. The main focus is on insects, but plants and various vertebrates also play an important part in this complex interaction of the eaters and the eaten. The weapons used are as varied as the many players: chemical, camouflage, group behavior, flying and other means of escape. A few of the examples used were familiar to me but some, on the other hand, were not. Tiny plant-hoppers that gather in groups that form a kind of pseudo-flower that fools predators and some working entomologist as well, Asian fireflies that swarm in huge numbers so bright that coastal fishermen use them a light-houses to guide them back home at night. I found the authors writing to be engaging and entertaining, done in a conversational style that sometimes made me chuckle but was always informative. This is definitely a good introduction to the research being done in optics and acoustics in the natural world. Some of the insects described have common names and some do not, whenever possible the author used both common and scientific names but you may want to have a computer handy to look up some of the species mentioned, I found my iPad to be invaluable. The book does have some original illustrations that help you to visualize a few of the insects and the relationships covered but, again, I turned to my iPad to get full color pictures of the many insects not included in the art work. Predator-pray relationships are, for the most part, built up over long spans of evolutionary time and can be limited in the number of species involved. Some predatory organisms have a very narrow focus on one or two pray species while others are more general in their approach, with several different species in the cross-hairs. The book is broken into 10 chapters with each on covering a different concept. Who are the eaters? Is it better to hide or to flee? Mimicry can lead to cryptic markings or flashy color and even scary eye-spots. Group behavior and defensive weapons are covered in some detail; is it better to go it alone or to live in a colony? Predators can acquire effective countermeasures and the balance of power can shift back and fourth many times with no end in sight. Of all the wonders that Waldbauer reveals in his book the one that amazed me the most was the "the snake-mimicking caterpillar of the Sphinx moth". Look it up, it will blow you away. What it all boils down to is that the pray must try to keep one step ahead of the predator and the predator, of course, must then overtake the pray and try to get in that extra step. Its a never ending process. The players in this predator/pray dance of survival can find that they, like Alice, are running as fast as they can just to stay place. While How Not To Be Eaten was written for the layperson reader it will help to have a good back ground in readings on Natural History and evolution. For me this book is a fine addition to my personal library and a book that I will revisit from time to time. I had no technical or formatting problems with this Kindle edition.

Fascinating
By Sheila Ary
I found this book hard to put down, there was so much fascinating information, most of which was new to me. The author's style is a bit pedantic, but don't let that put you off. It is a marvelous world, unknown to most of us, that he is writing about. His information is based on scientific research, which he quotes frequently, so we know it is genuine.

Late Ancient Knowing: Explorations in Intellectual HistoryFrom University of California Press

In this collection of essays, scholars from a range of disciplines explore the activity of knowing in late antiquity by focusing on thirteen major concepts from the intellectual, social, political, and cultural history of the period. They ask two questions about each of these concepts: what did late ancient people know about them, and how was that knowledge expressed in people’s actions? Late Ancient Knowing integrates intellectual history, post-structuralist literary theory, and recent trends in cognitive science to examine the ways that historical thought-worlds both shaped individual lives and were in turn shaped by the actions of individuals. Each chapter treats its main concept as a problem both of knowledge and of practice or behavior. The result is a richly imagined description of how people of this time understood and navigated their world, from travel through the countryside and encounters with demons to philosophical medicine and the etiquette of imperial courts.

Neuropsychedelia: The Revival of Hallucinogen Research since the Decade of the Brain, by Nicolas Langlitz

Neuropsychedelia examines the revival of psychedelic science since the "Decade of the Brain." After the breakdown of this previously prospering area of psychopharmacology, and in the wake of clashes between counterculture and establishment in the late 1960s, a new generation of hallucinogen researchers used the hype around the neurosciences in the 1990s to bring psychedelics back into the mainstream of science and society. This book is based on anthropological fieldwork and philosophical reflections on life and work in two laboratories that have played key roles in this development: a human lab in Switzerland and an animal lab in California. It sheds light on the central transnational axis of the resurgence connecting American psychedelic culture with the home country of LSD. In the borderland of science and religion, Neuropsychedelia explores the tensions between the use of hallucinogens to model psychoses and to evoke spiritual experiences in laboratory settings. Its protagonists, including the anthropologist himself, struggle to find a place for the mystical under conditions of late-modern materialism.

From the Inside Flap
"Langlitz's fieldwork in cutting-edge neuroscience laboratories is a much-needed scholarly work on the neglected area of psychedelic drugs and what these drugs can tell us about ourselves. Here, Langlitz grapples with the difficult issues at stake when studying these areas of neuroscience and psychopharmacology."—David Healy, author of Pharmageddon

"This is a first-class anthropological achievement. Langlitz' careful, long-term fieldwork generated many powerful and unexpected insights into the past and present of hallucinogen research. Neuropsychedelia will surely become the standard reference for this burgeoning field of social studies."—Tobias Rees, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at McGill University

Important and innovative book
By Neurotik
With Neuropsychedelia, Langlitz establishes himself among the young and forward-looking social scientists engaging with the neuro and psy disciplines. The volume complements Eric Dyck's study on the psychedelic research in Canada in the 1950s and 1960s, and it is also an extremely novel case study for reading alongside Nikolas Rose and Joelle Abi-Rached's "Neuro". None of these alternatives are to be missed - but I'd say that Langlitz's stands apart from these others. A fine contribution. Enjoyable. Thoughtful. Smart.

Neuropsychedelia: The Revival of Hallucinogen Research since the Decade of the Brain

Nicolas Langlitz, author of Neuropsychedelia, is a German polyglot, who, though trained as a physician, detoured into medical history, and later into a PhD program in medical anthropology. He is presently Assistant Professor at the New School for Social Research in New York City. His book stems directly from his use of hallucinogens in his youth and his search for meaning in this experience. This is not a chronicle of his “trips” but a history of the revival of psychedelic science since the Decade of the Brain in the 90s. Langlitz devotes two chapters to this revival. The first is devoted to big questions. Where does the idea that hallucinogens mimic insanity come from? Is the brain a reducing valve? Are hallucinogens liberating, leading to a freer more autonomous society? And that is why some libertarians fund this research? Are they the first step towards Brave New World (Huxley’s dystopia) with government mandated happy pills? Or towards Island (Huxley’s utopia) where hallucinogens are psycholytic breaking down egos and merging people into a great sea of spirituality? A chapter devoted to “Swiss Psilocybin and US Dollars” limns a Switzerland somewhere between Big Sur and a bourgeois East German style repression. They had chemists and hippies, but it was libertarian bucks that catalyzed the psychedelic research which bucked the American War on Drugs.
Two chapters deal with Langlitz as participant/observer in two laboratories , one in Zurich, one in San Diego. In these, Langlitz unfurls the flag of anthropology and challenges the assumptions of the research. Are double-blind placebo based experiments on hallucinogens possible? Are the experiments contaminated by assumptions convenient to drug manufacturers? Psilocybin makes people hallucinate and crazy people hallucinate. Is a drug which cancels psilocybin hallucination sufficient to “cure” craziness? The variability of the human response to psilocybin due to the “set and setting” of the experiments is thrown up as a game spoiler. Can schizophrenia be boiled down to neurotransmitters? Since there are differences in the way that sane humans hallucinate WITHOUT hallucinogens, and there are differences in the way that humans hallucinate WITH hallucinogens, might there be differences in the way insane humans hallucinate? That is, reducing the issue to neurotransmitters seems very optimistic. Langlitz talks of “local biologies”, a locution certain to generate misunderstanding among biologists.
When it comes to experimentation on mice (Chapter 4), Langlitz suggests that it is wrongheaded, so to speak, to say that mice hallucinate in any way that is an appropriate model for humans. How can you model mental disease in (other) animals if all you have to observe is behavior? And if the model of the PPI (pre pulse inhibition) is germane to the effects of psilocybin on organisms, mice are decidedly different from humans. Oddly, Langlitz suggests that “set and setting” interfere with animal research just as it does with humans. Then there is the notion that the brain is a “reducing valve” which keeps us from being distracted by the world around us and that psilocybin opens the doors of perception (thanks Aldous!) flooding the helpless mind. But dammit, some dopers report that they can concentrate really, really, really hard on that mimosa blossom in the moonlight on the tree behind the barn-- despite the world’s true cacophony. Is psilocybin here the reducing valve?
The last two chapters are spent trying to figure out if the world has been changed more by hallucinogens than science. Science “disenchants” the world saying “that’s not magic, honey, that’s chemistry!” But is that enough? Maybe for every disenchantment science delivers us, Madison Ave offers us two “re-enchantments”? Can science tell us what to do? How to live? Hallucinogens are seen as the libertarian, anarchist tools which undermine the authority of religion and which make each of us the captains of our own spirituality. Will psycholytics make us better, dissolving those pesky egos? Will it make us more spiritual, more reverent of life itself? Or just more advanced cynics?
Read the book! Carry a big dictionary!

overly sophisticated German intellectualism.
By Ryan Costa
Our civilization has largely held faith in the medicinal power of alcohol. The limitations of this are apparent, and largely tolerated. This book was interesting not for the psychedelic drugs themselves, but the comparisons of the democratic processes of Switzerland and those of the United States. There are profound differences between the cultures of these too countries. When America became the first country where most people had an automobile, we quickly passed prohibition of alcohol laws. Years later, even that Freedom Loving Icon Reagan deemed it prudent to raise the legal age to 21. America should probably not start passing out psychedelic drugs as frequently as Xanax and Prozac: We have too many cars, too many guns, and too many idiots. The new designer psychedelic drugs are even worse: they make people like Techno music(I have seen it in movies!)
