Napa Valley Historical Ecology Atlas: Exploring a Hidden Landscape of Transformation and Resilience, by Robin Grossinger

How has California’s landscape changed? What did now-familiar places look like during prior centuries? What can the past teach us about designing future landscapes? The Napa Valley Historical Ecology Atlas explores these questions by taking readers on a dazzling visual tour of Napa Valley from the early 1800s onward—a forgotten land of brilliant wildflower fields, lush wetlands, and grand oak savannas. Robin Grossinger weaves together rarely-seen historical maps, travelers’s accounts, photographs, and paintings to reconstruct early Napa Valley and document its physical transformation over the past two centuries. The Atlas provides a fascinating new perspective on this iconic landscape, showing the natural heritage that has enabled the agricultural success of the region today. The innovative research of Grossinger and his historical ecology team allows us to visualize the past in unprecedented detail, improving our understanding of the living landscapes we inhabit and suggesting strategies to increase their health and resilience in the future.

From the Inside Flap
“Welcome to the ecodetectives, the landscape archeologists, here to show us what was once in one particular valley and how places in general change and how historical maps and photographs can set your imagination on fire and tell you where you are more deeply than anything else. Every time I visit the Estuary Institute, Robin and cartographer Ruth are there presiding over tables layered thick with big reproductions of old maps and eager to show more maps on their computers: visiting them at work is time travel, cartographic chatauqua, art exhibition, and ecological epiphany, and it's wonderful all that is finally packed into a book, and a beautiful book at that.”—Rebecca Solnit, author of Infinite City: A San Francisco Atlas and Storming the Gates of Paradise: Landscapes for Politics

"Elk, grizzly, salmon, and Napa? Robin Grossinger and colleagues from the San Francisco Estuary Institute are the premier poet-scientists of the California landscape. Here they have created a beautiful, thoughtful, transformative look at the original ecology of the Napa Valley. If you are interested in sustainability, terroir, or the future of California, I would highly recommend this book." – Eric W. Sanderson, author of Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York

"This wonderful atlas is like none other. It takes you on a trip back through time and space, peeling away layer after layer of Napa Valley history. It gets under the skin of this enchanting place and then under yours. Once you learn to read the signposts of the past, you'll never look at the landscape of Napa—or anyplace else—the same way again. Grossinger and Askevold elevate local geography to a new plane of scientific precision, historical reconstruction, and elegant imagery. They even sketch a set of tours for revisiting Napa country on your own and practical lessons on how this precious landscape can be better managed in the future by keeping an eye on the past." – Richard Walker, author of The Country in the City: The Greening of the San Francisco Bay Area

Puts the history back into a magical place
By Festus
Millions of people visit Napa Valley each year, and most recognize that the vineyards are the product of human intervention. The valley has a history, and on the surface, its natural landscape seems utterly transformed by the wine industry. Yet as Robin Grossinger and Ruth Askevold show and tell in this wonderful, important book, the valley is both less natural and more resilient than meets the eye. In reconstructing Napa Valley's environmental history (grapes were not the first or only dream) and in detailing the surprising remnant species and natural communities, the authors remind us that we are not sole masters of this earth. Neither can we wash our hands and walk away from the fragile hybrid of nature and culture we have created--keeping Napa Valley economically and ecologically rich will take lots of hard work. As this book reminds us, it is work worth doing.

This beautiful book, illustrated with hundreds of extraordinary maps, historical photos and drawings, should be in every winery in the valley, and it would be a lovely gift for any oenophile or just citizen of the bay area.

Migration and Health: A Research Methods HandbookFrom University of California Press

The study of migrant populations poses unique challenges owing to the mobility of these groups, which may be further complicated by cultural, educational, and linguistic diversity as well as the legal status of their members. These barriers limit the usefulness of both traditional survey sampling methods and routine public health surveillance systems. Since nearly 1 in 7 people in the world is a migrant, appropriate methodological approaches must be designed and implemented to capture health data from populations. This effort is particularly important because migrant populations, in comparison to other populations, typically suffer disparities related to limited access to health care, greater exposure to infectious diseases, more occupational injuries, and fewer positive outcomes for mental health and other health conditions.

This path-breaking handbook is the first to engage with the many unique issues that arise in the study of migrant communities. It offers a comprehensive description of quantitative and qualitative methodologies useful in work with migrant populations. By providing information and practical tools, the editors fill existing gaps in research methods and enhance opportunities to address the health and social disparities migrant populations face in the United States and around the world.

Everyone's a Winner: Life in Our Congratulatory Culture, by Joel Best

Every kindergarten soccer player gets a trophy. Many high schools name dozens of seniors as valedictorians—of the same class. Cars sport bumper stickers that read “USA—Number 1.” Prizes proliferate in every corner of American society, and excellence is trumpeted with ratings that range from “Academy Award winner!” to “Best Neighborhood Pizza!” In Everyone’s a Winner, Joel Best— acclaimed author of Damned Lies and Statistics and many other books—shines a bright light on the increasing abundance of status in our society and considers what it all means. With humor and insight, Best argues that status affluence fosters social worlds and, in the process, helps give meaning to life in a large society.

From the Inside Flap
"Joel Best has a particular talent for making sociological ideas accessible to a broad audience. Thinking About Our Self-Congratulatory Culture
By AdamSmythe
Author Joel Best, a professor of sociology at the University of Delaware, has written a very interesting book in which he addresses--but doesn't offer many conclusions about--a number of issues involving recognition and status in our modern society. His book, "Everyone's a Winner," is short (166 pages) and easy to read, and it best serves to get the reader thinking.

You can't help but notice all the awards of one kind or another that we see or hear about almost daily. On the one hand, Mr. Best describes a sandwich shop that has a wall fully covered with framed certificates denoting the shop's service of the best cheesecakes, hoagies, etc. On the other hand, some of his examples of "status affluence" must have involved some more detailed research. Did you know, for example, that the number of awards given to mystery novels has grown from less than 10 in 1946 to over 100 in 2009? Perhaps closer to mind would be the proliferation of college football "bowl" games.

When my younger son graduated from high school, his class had a dozen valedictorians. (I was amazed, but apparently this isn't so rare nowadays.) But is "a dozen valedictorians" a contradiction in terms? Of course, it's hard to rank students when a number of them have seemingly perfect grades. Indeed, Joel Best's university announced that it had over 500 new freshmen with GPAs above 4.00. Grade inflation is alive and well. As the author points out, the number of high-school students with "A" averages went from 7.7% in 1976 to 15.6% in 2006. But--and here is the important issue--are higher grades reflective of higher student performance or declining standards?

It's not unusual for teams of young soccer players to award a large number of trophies at season's end. Not every child is a soccer star, but can we make the case that a little self-esteem at a young age might go a long way toward a child's future enthusiasm and performance? There's another topic to chew on.

Best notes that commentator Michael Barone classifies the 6 - 18 age group as "Soft America," where accountability often takes a back seat to concerns with self-esteem. Yet Barone labels the 18 - 30 age group as "Hard America," where we play for keeps. Is the transition from one group to the next perhaps a lot for kids to handle?

Okay, hopefully you are getting an idea of the topics raised in this book. So, if you are interested in reading more about (and what follow are Best's terms) "status affluence, a self-congratulatory culture, prize proliferation" and what the impact of these trends may be on our culture, then I'd recommend you give this book some real consideration. The author does a good job distilling important concepts into straightforward discussion and, significantly, he leaves most of the conclusions to his readers.

Schools just warehouse kids.
By AlchemystAZ
True and sad at the same time. All schools care about now is making sure everyone succeeds--warehousing kids and patting them on the heads. But their idea of succeeds is just not flunking anyone. No room left. Let the next school up tell them the truth.

David Bowie is not a winner - Joel Best is, that the truth Ruth!
By Ronnie James
What can I say about everyone is a winner. A lot, but Amazon only let's me write so much here, I will thus be brief. First of all, the cover is sick, and so daring. I would never have assumed someone like Joel Best to put on the cover of his book a man receiving pleasure from another, look at that dude's face on the cover, you know "sometin" is going down, he is feeling it. 2) Did not know this was a pop up book, leave it to the master to push boundaries for sociological reading. My pants got sooooooooo tight when I opened to page 69 and out popped a 1st place ribben. Could not wait to get in the shower and put it on. So naughty! Seriously, America is obsessed with winners, and making everyone a winner. hey, little Johnny is gonna be a loser, let that be a reality. We are just cuddling these kids soooo much by giving them Cheerios with stars in it, in my day, Cheerios had no stars. Wake up America Ferrera, Joel says it best, and says it with his spacey southern twang.

Paradise Transplanted: Migration and the Making of California Gardens, by Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo

Gardens are immobile, literally rooted in the earth, but they are also shaped by migration and by the transnational movement of ideas, practices, plants, and seeds. In Paradise Transplanted, Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo reveals how successive conquests and diverse migrations have made Southern California gardens, and in turn how gardens influence social inequality, work, leisure, status, and our experiences of nature and community. Drawing on historical archival research, ethnography, and over one hundred interviews with a wide range of people including suburban homeowners, paid Mexican immigrant gardeners, professionals at the most elite botanical garden in the West, and immigrant community gardeners in the poorest neighborhoods of inner-city Los Angeles, this book offers insights into the ways that diverse global migrations and garden landscapes shape our social world.

"A worthwhile read." (Peter Catron International Migration Review 2015-10-01)

"Hondagneu-Sotelo renders a powerful narrative that provides readers with an easy visualization of the natural spaces…One can imagine teaching Paradise Transplanted to undergraduates as both methodological example and illustration of C. Wright Mills’s clarion call for the sociological imagination." (American Journal of Sociology)

From the Inside Flap
"Hondagneu-Sotelo offers us an entirely new way of understanding, quite literally, the landscape of immigration. And in so doing she also shows us how this is the landscape of Los Angeles. Paradise Transplanted is a highly original book that is beautifully written and brings together sociology, geography, history, and urban planning in new and compelling ways. It will forever change how you 'see' Los Angeles."—Laura Pulido is the author of Black, Brown, Yellow And Left: Radical Activism In Los Angeles, as well as co-author of A People's Guide To Los Angeles.

"In her usual unique and creative way, Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo does it again by taking us through an unexpected window to explore social processes we think we already know. The link between migrating people and migrating seeds provides fresh insights into immigration, the changing landscape, inequality, and our understanding of place. A beautiful and rewarding read, chock-full of satisfying surprises."—Peggy Levitt, Wellesley College and Harvard University

"This is a fascinating book! Its powerful narrative conveys the functional and symbolic importance of gardens for immigrants -- as settings for healing and self-expression, but also their possible dark side -- as sites of oppression and exclusion. Through her captivating ethnography at three different Southern California sites, the author tells us a story that is not only simply about gardens but also about power relations, cultural and environmental sustainability, and social justice."—Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, Professor, UCLA Department of Urban Planning

"In humanizing nature through their gardening, Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo reveals how immigrants have created communities of meaning, hierarchies of pleasure and power, and landscapes of beauty. Paradise Transplanted is a labor of love, projecting a brilliant light onto the social structure of Southern California—from the intense work of inner-city neighborhoods to the manicured world of middle class suburbs, to the aristocratic display of trans-continental elites. Public sociology at its best."—Michael Burawoy, University of California, Berkeley.

"Paradise Transplanted is a passionate book about an important and influential region. Hondagneu-Sotelo investigates Southern California gardens to challenge both our understanding of the region's past, especially its founding myth as an Eden in the wilderness, and its future as a crossroads of migration."—Sharon Zukin, author of Naked City: The Death and Life of Authentic Urban Places

About the Author
Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo is Professor of Sociology at the University of Southern California and the author of Gendered Transitions, God’s Heart Has No Borders, and Domestica. She is regarded as one of the most accomplished and imaginative immigration scholars in sociology today.

David Smith in Two Dimensions: Photography and the Matter of Sculpture, by Sarah Hamill

How does photography shape the way we see sculpture? In David Smith in Two Dimensions, Sarah Hamill broaches this question through an in-depth consideration of the photography of American sculptor David Smith (1906–1965). Smith was a modernist known for radically shifting the terms of sculpture, a medium traditionally defined by casting, modeling, and carving. He was the first to use industrial welding as a sustained technique for large-scale sculpture, influencing a generation of minimalists to come. What is less known about Smith is his use of the camera to document his own sculptures as well as everyday objects, spaces, and bodies. His photographs of his sculptures were published in countless exhibition catalogs, journals, and newspapers, often as anonymous illustrations. Far from being neutral images, these photographs direct a pictorial encounter with spatial form and structure the public display of his work.

David Smith in Two Dimensions looks at the sculptor’s adoption of unconventional backdrops, alternative vantage points, and unusual lighting effects and exposures to show how he used photography to dramatize and distance objects. This comprehensive and penetrating account also introduces Smith’s expansive archive of copy prints, slides, and negatives, many of which are seen here for the first time. Hamill proposes a new understanding of Smith’s sculpture through photography, exploring issues that are in turn vital to discourses of modern sculpture, sculptural aesthetics, and postwar art. In Smith’s photography, we see an artist moving fluidly between media to define what a sculptural object was and how it would be encountered publicly.

Review
..".thorough research and exceedingly compelling and rigorously formal readings of individual works."--Christa Noel Robbins"Oxford Art Journal" (09/09/2016)

From the Inside Flap
"Sarah Hamill's David Smith in Two Dimensions makes a decisive contribution to our understanding of one of the greatest modern sculptors by focusing attention—to all intents and purposes, for the first time—on the surprisingly important role of photography in his practice and thinking. All future students of Smith's art will be in her debt."—Michael Fried, Johns Hopkins University

"This unusually intelligent and illuminating analysis of David Smith’s photographs significantly redefines our understanding of the artist’s sculptural oeuvre. It is not just about the relation between his photography and his sculpture. Rather, it demonstrates in a way that no previous study has done how Smith’s often-experimental photographic imaging was integral to his sculptural practice."—Alexander Potts, University of Michigan

"Hamill’s exploration of the vital significance of photography to David Smith’s sculpture will alter the understanding of this great artist’s work. She shows the purposefulness with which he photographed his sculpture and how his photography amplified his dialogues with other influential modernists, such as Rosso, Brancusi, and Moore. Her analysis of Smith’s color photographs leads to a welcome revision of the language around his paint on steel. This astute and probing study reveals an artist of staggering intentionality and invention."—Michael Brenson, Bard College

Happiness equals Reality minus Expectations
By Joe Butson
It is a shame more people haven't read/reviewed this book since it is so easy to read and can help a motivated person understand how to improve their day to day happiness with some simple techniques. I suppose you could select a more academic approach to understanding cognitive theory, but why? Actually, if even Daniel Kahneman, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, keeps his groundbreaking tour of the mind in "Thinking Fast and Slow" as simple as the authors of "Engineering Happiness", then the key to appreciating the book is its simplicity.

The first discussion of the "Laws Of Happiness" reveals social comparisons the brain automatically makes, such as what we have vs. our peers. From how much you earn, to what kind of car you drive to the test results you received in school, your brain makes comparisons and your happiness is fundamentally based on these comparisons. For instance, back in your school days, chances are you were really happy to get a B in Statistics until you found out all your friends received an A. You were immediately, and negatively, impacted by the news of your peers grades and that good feeling you experienced was consigned to the rubbish bin. But should you have done that? Of course not!

The Laws of Happiness presented in the book around satiation, expectations and framing are simple to understand, share with others and use every day. It is important to understand how you think about happiness, especially if you want to improve how happy you feel. I was initially curious about the book and I couldn't help thinking about disappointments in the past, some quite recent, and how unhappy they made me feel. Understanding the role of "basic" goods in my happiness and the rules of satiation gave me a new perspective on how to go about every day in a new way.

The aforementioned book, "Thinking Fast and Slow" is equally accessible and is a much more detailed description of cognitive theory, but still very practical. I read it after "Engineering Happiness" and it made me even more appreciative of the authors "Laws of Happiness" approach.

If you want another interesting insight into how our brains affect our perspectives, happiness and how it manages complexity, read "The Black Swan" by Nichalos Taleb. Review his theory on our propensity for simplistic reductions of the complex events we experience. His ideas on how we think influenced Kahneman ["Fast and Slow"], and I found these books to be formative, helpful and well worth the investment of time. So get happy ;-)

Happiness comes from choices each one of us can make
By Bhagwan Chowdhry
The authors are engineers and decision theorists (full disclosure: one of the authors is my colleague at UCLA Anderson School of Management). I was aware of some of their work in the area already. But I was blown away by how many insights this book contains. What makes this book really special is the specificity of their advice - the advice you can implement almost immediately and observe for yourself its validity and its effects in your life. Chapter 9 on Basic Goods alone is worth many times the price of this book. Even simple advice on how to structure your vacation is simple and easy to implement without making any change in what you spend on your vacation. And all the insights are based on a synthesis of years of careful research by many experts. Buy this book, read it, and start following their suggestions today. You will be happy you made this choice.

Fantastic life advice I really appreciated and needed!
By rlm
I really enjoyed reading this. In the daily struggle that is life- I needed and got logical, evidence based (love that) helpful advice that I remind myself about when ever there is a difficult moment or hard decision to make.
The authors provided a great example on every page, but the 2 pieces of advice that I personally needed to apply on a daily basis were- stick with your original decision and avoid quick outbursts of anger.
I am not doing this justice, but in a nutshell:
Regarding the advice to stick with your original decision- Remind yourself that it is easy to forget why you originally decided to do things a certain way, and we often become susceptible to a new point of view at the last minute, etc. you need to remember that you made your original decision for good reasons. Your original decision may not always be the best one, but if you stick with it, you can more clearly determine your future needs and hone your own life code.
I am prone to quick internal anger outbursts. This sometimes results in saying things that are damaging to the people around me and therefore myself and my happiness. Their advice is that anger quickly dissipates and that studies show giving into anger often results in increased anger. This is a great nugget to keep in mind daily when the going gets tough- you will feel better soon and don't let your quick anger ruin the good long term relationships you have sought to build.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a logical argument and wants to navigate life with increased happiness!
