The Parisian Avant-Garde in the Age of Cinema, 1900-1923, by Jennifer Wild

The first decades of the twentieth century were pivotal for the historical and formal relationships between early cinema and Cubism, mechanomorphism, abstraction, and Dada. To examine these relationships, Jennifer Wild’s interdisciplinary study grapples with the cinema’s expanded identity as a modernist form defined by the concept of horizontality. Found in early methods of projection, film exhibition, and in the film industry’s penetration into cultural life by way of film stardom, advertising, and distribution, cinematic horizontality provides a new axis of inquiry for studying early twentieth-century modernism. Shifting attention from the film to the horizon of possibility around, behind, and beyond the screen, Wild shows how canonical works of modern art may be understood as responding to the changing characteristics of daily life after the cinema. Drawing from a vast popular cultural, cinematic, and art-historical archive, Wild challenges how we have told the story of modern artists’ earliest encounter with cinema and urges us to reconsider how early projection, film stardom, and film distribution transformed their understanding of modern life, representation, and the act of beholding. By highlighting the cultural, ideological, and artistic forms of interpellation and resistance that shape the phenomenology of a wartime era, The Parisian Avant-Garde in the Age of Cinema, 1900–1923 provides an interdisciplinary history of radical form. This book also offers a new historiography that redefines how we understand early cinema and avant-garde art before artists turned to making films themselves.

Review
"An interesting new assessment of film and the Parisian art scene at the beginning of the century."--K. S. Nolley"CHOICE" (09/01/2015)

From the Inside Flap
"Jennifer Wild’s book is a major achievement, a monument in fact. The book ranges across the entirety of the early twentieth-century French avant-garde, from Picasso and Cubism to Dada and early Surrealism. Developments in cinema, painting, poetry, and music are all tracked. Wild's knowledge of the French avant-garde goes deeper and is more all-encompassing than that of anyone I have read in her generation. But in her 'horizontal' approach to the myriad ways in which the French avant-garde responded to the parameters of what is here called the 'age of cinema,' Wild achieves more than deep erudition: she has invented a new way of crossing the fields of cinema studies and art history."—George Baker, author of The Artwork Caught by the Tail: Francis Picabia and Dada in Paris

"From the effects of projection on early Picasso to the ubiquitous “Chaplin effect,” cinema was woven into the fabric and design of French avant-gardism. Jennifer Wild trains the light of cinema on myriad poets and artists whose work glows anew, while they in turn used films as visual “diagrams” or as a lethal “ballistics.” Bolstered by an astounding bibliography and a wealth of anecdotes, Wild moves effortlessly through Paris, like the movies themselves. You come away astonished at the boldness of this culture, at the boldness of this artform, and especially at the boldness of this scholar who has ingested this period like few before her."—Dudley Andrew, Yale University

“The Parisian Avant-Garde in the Age of Cinema, 1900–1923, disrupts a stabilized sense of ‘cinema’ that has shaped the history of modern art and asks how that history would need to be rethought in order for a more accurate and complicated version of cinema to come into view. Jennifer Wild draws on a strong grasp of both modern art and film historical scholarship, as well as an impressive amount of archival research, to make important contributions to cinema and media studies, art history, theater and performance studies, and literary studies.”—Karen Beckman, author of Crash: Cinema and the Politics of Speed and Stasis

“An extremely rich and wide-ranging study of the intersection between avant-garde painting and literature and the emergent popular art form of cinema in the early decades of the twentieth century. Magisterial in both the breadth and depth of its analysis and meticulous in its research, this book will have a considerable impact on the fields of art history, film history, and French cultural history.”—Elizabeth Ezra, author of Georges Méliès: The Birth of the Auteur

Discipline and Debate: The Language of Violence in a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery, by Michæl Lempert

The Dalai Lama has represented Buddhism as a religion of non-violence, compassion, and world peace, but this does not reflect how monks learn their vocation. This book shows how monasteries use harsh methods to make monks of men, and how this tradition is changing as modernist reformers—like the Dalai Lama—adopt liberal and democratic ideals, such as natural rights and individual autonomy. In the first in-depth account of disciplinary practices at a Tibetan monastery in India, Michael Lempert looks closely at everyday education rites—from debate to reprimand and corporal punishment. His analysis explores how the idioms of violence inscribed in these socialization rites help produce educated, moral persons but in ways that trouble Tibetans who aspire to modernity. Bringing the study of language and social interaction to our understanding of Buddhism for the first time, Lempert shows and why liberal ideals are being acted out by monks in India, offering a provocative alternative view of liberalism as a globalizing discourse.

From the Inside Flap
"Discipline and Debate offers both a vivid picture and a painstaking analysis of social and linguistic practices of traditional and post-traditional monastic education among Tibetans living in India." -Guy Newland, author of Introduction to Emptiness: As Taught in Tsong-kha-pa's Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path

"Ethnographically rich, interpretively acute and generative, and always lucid and compelling, Discipline and Debate is a singular contribution. Lempert moves with insight from detailed examinations of the language of monastic debate to broad gauge considerations of diasporic Tibetan Buddhist entanglements within its contemporary exilic world." -Don Brenneis, Department of Anthropology, University of California, Santa Cruz

“This extraordinary study sets a new standard for the study of the links between culture and social interaction. No one who cares about the study of religion, language or modernity—or who cares about the place of interaction in cultural theory—should miss this book.” -Joel Robbins, author of Becoming Sinners: Christianity and Moral Torment in a Papua New Guinea Society

The Makers of American Wine: A Record of Two Hundred Years, by Thomas Pinney

Americans learned how to make wine successfully about two hundred years ago, after failing for more than two hundred years. Thomas Pinney takes an engaging approach to the history of American wine by telling its story through the lives of 13 people who played significant roles in building an industry that now extends to every state. While some names—such as Mondavi and Gallo—will be familiar, others are less well known. These include the wealthy Nicholas Longworth, who produced the first popular American wine; the German immigrant George Husmann, who championed the native Norton grape in Missouri and supplied rootstock to save French vineyards from phylloxera; Frank Schoonmaker, who championed the varietal concept over wines with misleading names; and Maynard Amerine, who helped make UC Davis a world-class winemaking school.

Entertaining narrative history of colorful personalities in American wine history.
By Kenneth Umbach
This is an entertaining, wide-ranging overview based on key figures in the industry over the last two centuries, mostly drawn from Pinney's massive two-volume (and four-century) history of wine in America. Colorful characters abound. Great book for folks with an interest in American wines and where they came from.

One Hundred Fifty Years of Failure: An Absorbing Chronicle
By DPHBrooklyn
This review originally appeared on 205Food.com

John James Dufour arrived in America from Switzerland in 1796, convinced he could turn his adopted country into a wine-growing, wine-loving nation. He believed this, even though Thomas Jefferson had tried and failed to grow the grape. He believed, despite the black rot and other vine diseases that had devastated all European vinifera planted in America.

Dufour's initial effort, "First Vineyard" in Kentucky, was aptly named. It was decimated by disease its first year. Yet, some vines survived the wreckage, even thrived. These hardy vines (unknown to Dufour) were a chance crossing of vinifera and an American grape, creating the Alexander, the first significant French-American hybrid. With the help of new settlers from Switzerland and a loan from the U.S. Congress, the first commercial winery was established in America, near Vevey, Indiana.

The wine made from the Alexander grape was probably rather poor. President Jefferson was polite and noncommital after opening a bottle. Another taster said that "nothing but a strong effort at courtesy, however, can induce anyone seriously to call it wine..." Although the wine business in Vevey flourished for a time, disease battered its vines, and by the 1830s it was finished.

Other visionaries took up the cause of Dufour in the following decades. Nicholas Longworth, a successful businessman and amateur horticulturist, found that the Catawba grape flourished near Cincinnati, and by 1859 Ohio "led the nation in the production of wine." But disease was again a problem, and Catawba an easy mark, making production irregular. In the 1850s there were only three successful vintages.

After 1860 the wine business began to grow rapidly in California, mainly in the Los Angeles area, commercialization following the padres and their wine making. The Mission Grape, an obscure European vinifera, grew well and made such successful wine that the town of Anaheim was founded by a contingent of German immigrants just to grow it. Very productive for a time, these viticulteurs produced 1.25 million gallons by 1884. But guess what? Pierce's Disease (native to the American South) infected their fields in the 1880s, and by 1891 nearly all the Mission grape vines had perished.

Is it time for a brief recap? Grapes were planted in many different locations in the 1800s. Indifferent to undrinkable wine was made. Most of the vineyards were successful at first, but all were eventually felled by disease. By the time the prohibition movement began to gather force in the late 1800s, no teetotalers fumed about "demon wine" or the depravity of wine bars. No, the visionaries in Thomas Pinney's book, the men who saw grapevines growing in every locale, from coast to coast, had failed. America was not a wine-drinking nation. Not even close.

By the late 1800s there was only one real glimmer of hope. Grape growing was shifting to Northern California, where European vinifera thrived. Producers like Italian Swiss Colony began to pay a great deal of attention to quality. They grew the best vinfera grapes and bottled their own wine, instead of shunting it off on the rails, in barrel or tank car, its destiny to be mishandled and adulterated by a bottler elsewhere in America.

But northern California offered only an illusory hope. Disaster was certain to find the wine industry once again, and it did. The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 landed the first punch, destroying enormous stockpiles of wine. The prohibition movement landed a series of blows in the early 1900s, as it chased wine entrepreneurs like Paul Garrett, the baron of Scuppernong, out of one state after another. The enactment of prohibition in 1920 was the knockout punch.

Or was it? No, there were more indignities to come. The loss of wine-making skills during prohibition led to large scale production of plonk in the 1930s. The disruptions of World War II and the collapse of the wine industry afterwards left "the mood of the industry resembling the bad old days of the depression."

In the post-war years Maynard Amerine, of the University of California at Davis, urged growers to adopt better varietals and plant them in suitable locations. His advice was mainly ignored, and he "was so discouraged by the apparent failure of his work to make any difference that he thought of leaving Davis for work elsewhere." Frank Schoonmaker, the preeminent wine writer of of his time, urged California wine makers to label their bottles with grape names and specific locations, for instance Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, not "Hearty Burgundy" or "Pink Chablis." But his suggestions were not welcome, and the author notes that "it is difficult to imagine the violence with which [his ideas] were opposed at the time."

If Thomas Pinney's book The Makers of American Wine: A Record of Two Hundred Years had covered only one hundred fifty years, an appropriate title would have been "The Makers of American Wine: A Long History of Their Many Failures." But miraculously, in the 1960's public taste began to change. Winemakers smartened up. Amerine's advice was finally heard and Frank Schoonmaker's Encyclopedia of Wine (1964) sold well and was read. Robert Mondavi and his followers led the transformation of the California wine industry.

The Makers of American Wine consists of thirteen chapters, each describing the contribution of one person to the industry. Some of the individuals made positive and lasting contributions (John James Dufour, Frank Schoonmaker, Maynard Amerine, Robert Mondavi), others were very successful businessmen but now forgotten (Charles Kohler, Paul Garrett), and still others certainly left their mark, even if it was not necessarily positive (Ernest and Julio Gallo).

Choosing thirteen individuals to represent two hundred years of history isn't easy, especially since the events of the last fifty years are much more important than the preceding one hundred and fifty. Author Pinney's decision to end the book with a profile of Cathy Corison seems particularly odd. Yes, she is a talented winemaker, but her impact on the industry has been negligible, and she has not led a charge of women into the field. Her inclusion is especially strange given that Robert M. Parker is not one of the chosen thirteen. One could easily argue that Mr. Parker has had as much influence on the U.S. wine industry as anyone profiled in this book.

The best chapters in The Makers of American Wine cover largely forgotten history -- Dufour, the California Wine Association, the story of Italian Swiss Colony. Sections on Robert Mondavi and Ernest and Julio Gallo may seem too familiar, lacking drama, especially for those who have read The House of Mondavi or Blood and Wine, the story of the Gallos. But the arc of this book is impressive, and by its end you feel wonderment that the wine industry in America ever found its stride.

Seriously!: Investigating Crashes and Crises as If Women Mattered, by Cynthia Enloe

In Seriously!, Cynthia Enloe, author of the groundbreaking analysis of globalization, Bananas, Beaches, and Bases, addresses two deeply gendered and contested questions: Who is taken seriously? And who gets to bestow the label “serious” on others? With a strategy of taking both women and gender dynamics seriously, Cynthia Enloe investigates the Dominique Strauss-Kahn affair and the banking crash of 2008, the subsequent recession, as well as UN peacekeeping and the ongoing Egyptian revolution. Each case study highlights the gritty experiences of women in diverse circumstances—in banks, on the job market, in war zones, and in revolutions. The results of taking women seriously are fresh insights into what fuels the cultures of hyper–risk taking, of sexual harassment, and the denial of women’s post-war security.

Review
"Enloe offers vivid illustrations from around the world of how women's perspectives and needs are ignored or trivialized, both in public discourse and policymaking."
--Carrie Baker"Ms. Magazine" (09/01/2013)

From the Inside Flap
“This is simply a brilliant book. It is timely and necessary. In the shining of her feminist spotlight on deepest fissures of the structures of our modern world, she uncovers and explains; patriarchy, misogyny and masculinity, she moves effortlessly from militarism to financial institutions and shows that the triumvirate of P, M and M, still defines politics and power across all spectrums. In exposing how it works, she also exposes something we, as feminists, have been ashamed to confront, (save for the brave few), our own fear of not being taken seriously, our tacit ‘collaboration’. Its time for us to change, and as the imaginary dinner table concluded; ‘Now not later’! Thank you Cynthia!”—Madeleine Rees, Secretary General, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom

“Of all the lessons I have learned from Cynthia Enloe’s pathbreaking scholarship, perhaps the most important is that to understand how any system of power works, one must examine who is on the margins of that system and how they are kept there. And to do that, one must pay close attention to the lives of those who live and operate on the margins, women in particular. In her new book, Enloe shows exactly what scholars, activists and officials lose when they fail to take the lives of women seriously. It is a must-read for any social scientist or graduate student.”—Aaron Belkin, Author of How We Won: Progressive Lessons from the Repeal of ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell’

“Cynthia Enloe’s work is unique in that it challenges us all—policymakers, activists, scholars and students alike to take gender seriously. She asks provocative questions that are not normally asked about global politics and is always questioning our ‘common sense’ understanding about the way the world works.”—J. Ann Tickner, author of Gendering World Politics: Issues and Approaches in the Post-Cold War Era

“Cynthia Enloe is the leading authority in the field of gender, feminism, women and international relations.”—Amrita Basu, Paino Professor of Political Science, Women and Gender Studies, Amherst College

Building Home: Howard F. Ahmanson and the Politics of the American Dream, by Eric John Abrahamson

Building Home is an innovative biography that weaves together three engrossing stories. It is one part corporate and industrial history, using the evolution of mortgage finance as a way to understand larger dynamics in the nation‘s political economy. It is another part urban history, since the extraordinary success of the savings and loan business in Los Angeles reflects much of the cultural and economic history of Southern California. Finally, it is a personal story, a biography of one of the nation‘s most successful entrepreneurs of the managed economy —Howard Fieldstad Ahmanson. Eric John Abrahamson deftly connects these three strands as he chronicles Ahmanson’s rise against the background of the postwar housing boom and the growth of L.A. during the same period.

As a sun-tanned yachtsman and a cigar-smoking financier, the Omaha-born Ahmanson was both unique and representative of many of the business leaders of his era. He did not control a vast infrastructure like a railroad or an electrical utility. Nor did he build his wealth by pulling the financial levers that made possible these great corporate endeavors. Instead, he made a fortune by enabling the middle-class American dream. With his great wealth, he contributed substantially to the expansion of the cultural institutions in L.A. As we struggle to understand the current mortgage-led financial crisis, Ahmanson’s life offers powerful insights into an era when the widespread hope of homeownership was just beginning to take shape.

From the Inside Flap
"In this blockbuster biography, Abrahamson brings the business history of Southern California--and the national postwar housing boom!--to new levels of scholarly presentation. Building Home offers readers the opportunity to examine the federally managed housing economy, now in disarray, at its highpoint of efficiency, as seen through the flamboyant figure of one of its most successful Mad Men practitioners!"—Kevin Starr, University of Southern California

"Eric John Abrahamson has accomplished a great feat: Using interviews and detective work in the archives, he chronicles the personality and vision of Howard Ahmanson, a man as elusive in the written records as he was imposing in the memory of those who knew him. Abrahamson tells an impressive history of Ahmanson’s innovations in the savings-and-loan business, revealing how the man and his company left a long-lasting influence on the cultural as well as business landscape of southern California."—Adam Arenson, author of The Great Heart of the Republic: St. Louis and the Cultural Civil War

“Eric Abrahamson takes us back to an earlier era for America and Southern California when dreams were realized not only for a few but literally for millions. The optimism and nerve of howard ahmanson's times are displayed with balance and critical insight. But it's clear that we have lost much of our focus on home and family. The question for us is can we somehow restore the American dream before it devolves into the mists of history?”—Joel Kotkin, the author of The Next Hundred Million: America in 2050, The City: A Global History

"Howard Ahmanson's gifts to culture in Los Angeles were enormous. As the sole owner of Home Savings, the nation's largest savings and loan, Ahmanson became one of the richest men in California by catering to middle-class dreams of home ownership. During his lifetime, he played a key role in funding the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Music Center, the Otis Art Institute and other civic organizations. With his endowment of the Ahmanson Foundation, he created an institution that provides $40 million a year in grants to benefit education, social services, healthcare and the arts in Los Angeles. Yet to most Angelenos, Ahmanson was and remains a mystery. Eric John Abrahamson's biography reveals the man and places him within the broader economic, political and cultural streams of mid-century America and Southern California."—Stephen D. Rountree, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Music Center

Whatever Happened to the Savings and Loans?
By ThunderReader
As a kid growing up in the 1970's, I remember every small town having a savings and loan on main street. These institutions were as ubiquitous as station wagons and bell bottoms. Then they quietly disappeared. I haven't seen one of these in thirty years.

Howard Ahmanson made his fortune by selling fire insurance and by buying thrifts. He saw a way to make money not by lending to people with money, but by lending to the middle class and working class who at the time had trouble securing enough financing to purchase a home. To be succesful at this, he did two things. First, he found a way to out perform his competitors by purchasing several unrelated thrifts and making one large thrift with branches in every community in Southern California. Because of the size of his operation, he could offer the best rates on mortgages and the best rates for the working class saver. Secondly, he influenced government. Thrifts were a regulated industry, and Ahmanson did what he could to influence who could buy thrifts, who chaired the thrift commission in California, and what regulations the commission enacted. For the 1940's and 1950's, the commission thought it was their duty to encourage the operation of thrifts so that the average person had access to home mortgages. In the 1960's, government realized that their friendly regulations and cooperation with thrift owners had created an industry which benefitted wealthy men as much or more than the working class who needed home mortgages. By this time, the system had made Mr. Ahmanson very rich, but what was the effect on communities and the average American? Would a deregulated industry bring competition into the market and bring down the cost of borrowing money for a mortgage?

What I read in this book is troubling to me. What industries today rely upon the fact that the government regulates them, thereby limiting competition, and getting very rich in the process because the consumer has little or no choice? What industries would be deregulated if politicians with the power to deregulate were not dependent upon the cash contributions from the industries to hang onto or get into their elected offices? What can Americans do to keep the public interest or common good at the forefront of government decision making regarding business and regulation? Was the housing market crisis in the 21st century caused at least in part by bad government regulations in the 20th century? I'll need to read on to find out.

A look at the Consensus Society
By James Joseph II
This biography is really a picture at what the author calls the "Consensus Society": a society in which business leaders and politicians saw themselves on more or less the same side. Business leaders would work to achieve the policy goals favored by the American people (in this case, expanded home ownership), and politicians would stabilize markets and make life easier for larger businesses by limiting competition. Such a society, of course, assumes a great degree of consensus among ordinary americans.

Truly, a case study of a different way of living,

History of the S&L industry.
By Kenneth H Petersen
The book provides a review of the history of the Savings and Loan industry and one of it's most successful entrepreneurs.
If only more Bank/S&L CEOs had been as astute with risk management, the S&L crisis in the 1980s would have been avoided.

Well written book about a fascinating man.

Deceit and Denial: The Deadly Politics of Industrial Pollution (California/Milbank Books on Health and the Public), by Gerald Markowitz, D

Deceit and Denial details the attempts by the chemical and lead industries to deceive Americans about the dangers that their deadly products present to workers, the public, and consumers. Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner pursued evidence steadily and relentlessly, interviewed the important players, investigated untapped sources, and uncovered a bruising story of cynical and cruel disregard for health and human rights. This resulting exposé is full of startling revelations, provocative arguments, and disturbing conclusions--all based on remarkable research and information gleaned from secret industry documents.

This book reveals for the first time the public relations campaign that the lead industry undertook to convince Americans to use its deadly product to paint walls, toys, furniture, and other objects in America's homes, despite a wealth of information that children were at risk for serious brain damage and death from ingesting this poison. This book highlights the immediate dangers ordinary citizens face because of the relentless failure of industrial polluters to warn, inform, and protect their workers and neighbors. It offers a historical analysis of how corporate control over scientific research has undermined the process of proving the links between toxic chemicals and disease. The authors also describe the wisdom, courage, and determination of workers and community members who continue to voice their concerns in spite of vicious opposition. Readable, ground-breaking, and revelatory, Deceit and Denial provides crucial answers to questions of dangerous environmental degradation, escalating corporate greed, and governmental disregard for its citizens' safety and health.

After eleven years, Markowitz and Rosner update their work with a new epilogue that outlines the attempts these industries have made to undermine and create doubt about the accuracy of the information in this book.

From Library Journal
This is a historical account of corporate control of the lead, plastics, and petroleum industries and the campaign of denial regarding the toxic effects on workers, consumers, and the general public of chemicals used in the manufacture of paint, toys, furniture, plastics, and other products. Coauthors of Deadly Dust: Silicosis and the Politics of Occupational Disease in Twentieth Century America, Markowitz (history, John Jay Coll. of Criminal Justice, CUNY) and Rosner (history and public health, Columbia Univ.) conducted interviews, examined documents, and pursued additional investigations to expose corporate greed and deception and governmental foot dragging that disregarded public-health risks through much of the 20th century. They allege that industry officials lied about the dangers, failed to protect workers, fooled the public, and kept regulators at bay. Corporate control over scientific research also undermined efforts to inform the public about the relationships between toxic chemicals and disease. However, this is not another diatribe about industrial pollution. Instead, it is a well-researched work that analyzes the conflict between industry's need to provide products that make life easier for consumers and the public's demand for legislation and standards to protect them from toxic pollution caused by the manufacture of these products. Recommended for health, environment, and law collections.

Deceit and Denial chronicles the history of poisoning by environmental lead and vinyl chloride. Parts of the stories have been told before, but recent litigation has forced thousands of once-secret industry documents into the open, revealing long-standing conspiracies to conceal evidence of the hazards of these two agents from the American public. Lead is an old but continuing industrial hazard. Italy's Bernardino Ramazzini, in his book Diseases of Workers, published in 1713, lamented the poisoning of potters and painters by lead-glazing fumes and lead paints, respectively. Markowitz and Rosner show that new forms of lead poisoning emerged in the 20th century primarily as a result of the manufacture of tetraethyl lead, which was introduced as an antiknock compound for gasoline, and the increasing affordability of lead-based paint, valued for its durability and whiteness. Neuropathologies were common in the 1920s in plants that manufactured leaded gasoline, which prompted workers in one New Jersey factory to christen it the "loony-bin building" and the "house of butterflies" (because of employees' hallucinations of winged insects). Lead paints were widely used on interior walls, furniture, and children's toys, causing poisoning through the ingestion or inhalation of cretinizing dusts. Efforts to ban leaded gasoline began in the 1920s and succeeded in some countries, but the Ethyl Gasoline Corporation managed to convince short-sighted politicians in the United States that smooth-running cars were worth the costs to health. Automobiles were a relative rarity in the 1920s, but by 1964 more than 200,000 tons of lead were being spewed into the air by cars and trucks. By this time, lead had found its way into everything from toy soldiers and toothpaste tubes to synthetic pearls and the pipes used for indoor plumbing. Markowitz and Rosner explain that many of the most injurious products were kept on the market long after they had been identified as harmful. Coordinated by the Lead Industries Association (founded in 1928), manufacturers mounted advertising campaigns to put a positive face on lead. Lead was deliberately marketed as child-friendly -- by means of comic books and the pervasive Dutch Boy logo, which the authors suggest was a kind of metallic Joe Camel. In a remarkable advertisement reproduced in the book, the National Lead Company depicts a happy infant reaching for a can of evaporated or condensed milk, which is kept "pure" by the drop of lead solder used to seal the can. Markowitz and Rosner write as medical historians, but their book could prove to be of legal interest, given that the industry, now facing lawsuits, has claimed that nothing was known about the chronic hazards associated with lead until 1943, when Randolph Byers and Elizabeth Lord documented such effects in an article in the American Journal of Diseases of Children. Using internal industry documents, Markowitz and Rosner show that the lead industry in the United States was well aware of the hazard decades before the publication of the article by Byers and Lord but chose to respond to it primarily as a public-relations problem. Several countries, including France, Belgium, Austria, Greece, Great Britain, Spain, and Cuba, either banned or restricted the use of lead paint for interior surfaces even before the First World War. But the U.S. lead industry campaigned effectively against such regulations, promoting lead not just as safe and patriotic but also as "an apparent gift of God," in the words of the first vice-president of Ethyl Gasoline Corporation. Even after the possibility of harm was admitted, industry officials blamed parents for allowing their children to chew on the bars of their cribs or to suck on their fingers. A medical condition known as "pica" was invoked, as the industry attributed lead poisoning to an unnatural tendency of infants to put things in their mouths. The evidence of hazards to workers in vinyl chloride plants, such as angiosarcoma of the liver, was treated as a trade secret by manufacturers wanting to avoid "a public relations and legal nightmare," write the authors. The authors also explain that in the late 1990s, the residents of Convent, Louisiana, who were overwhelmingly poor and black, organized to stop Shintech Corporation from building a $700 million vinyl chloride plant by convincing the Environmental Protection Agency that the decision to build in Convent constituted environmental racism. I learned a few surprising things. For example, computer monitors, on average, contain four pounds of lead. Lead was never an additive in paint (added as a tint, for instance) but rather was the pigment itself. (Lead paint is simply lead carbonate or lead oxide to which a flatting agent such as linseed oil has been added.) Lead chromate was once used to give a yellow color to bread and cakes. For more than 30 years, the Ethyl Corporation and General Motors monopolized the study of lead poisoning and provided overly optimistic estimates of how much of the metal the human body can safely withstand. Markowitz and Rosner describe their own surprise at learning that such historical diseases as silicosis, which they thought was long dead, still exist today. Moreover, one should not forget that these are global maladies. Leaded gasoline is still used in many parts of the world, "sugar of lead" (lead acetate) is still used in Mexico as a medicine for stomach disorders, and food is still cooked in lead vessels in parts of India to give it a distinctive flavor. It may not be true, as some scholars once postulated, that lead consumption caused the fall of Rome, but it is true that poisonings are going to continue to occur throughout the world for decades, as peeling paint turns to dust, as leaded gas fuels cars, and as years of ignorance and industrial neglect take their toll. Goodbye Whiggish View of History
By Sceptique500
Whether we know it or not, we all cherish a Whiggish view of history - mankind emerging from dank darkness and ignorance of the past into the sunny destiny of modern civilisation. Such is the stuff of fairy tales, and the child within us will not let us accept any other.
Basing themselves on historical documentation unearthed in litigation to which the US chemical industry has been submitted over the recent decades, the authors - historians both - have portrayed two grim tales of deceit and denial. The first involves lead, whose poisonous character was known since time immemorial, and yet was used indiscriminately in paint, and then in gasoline. The second is the history of vinyl chloride, the mainstay of the petrochemical industry, whose cancer-causing character was long denied.
Lead was defeated by technology. Other minerals made better paint bases, and lead in gasoline was banned when catalytic converters were added to the petrol engine. The current gasoline additives are just as cancerous - but that's a story still to be written.
Caught out in lies and deceit in the `70s about the cancerous effects of vinyl chloride, the petrochemical industry reeled, und knuckled under. It did not even cost them that much. As indicated at pg. 223, the industry paid $ 270 million dollars for doing a job that it had estimated would cost $90 billion - and the government thought it might cost $ 1 billion.
But the industry learned its lesson. It would not submit again to the checks and balances of a democratic society. Politicians were bought, courts intimidated - and heck, science needs research money. A successful campaign against `big government' was launched, and `deregulation' mania swept the land - self-regulation is to solve all problems. Now the governor from the dirtiest state of the Union - and proud of it - is in the White House.
The end of the book is a distressing description of the rearguard battles fought by the citizens of Louisiana to avoid that `cancer lane' - as the region between Baton Rouge and New Orleans is dubbed - become upgraded to `cancer super-highway'.
The list of the participants in this story of denial and deceit are not the `dirty back-yard tinkerers', the scum of the chemical earth. The best of the finest of the sector are involved, individually, and in Associations. Past errors or malfeasance is no object.
We do not learn from past mistakes. Except better to cover up our misdeeds.

WE NEED MORE LIKE THIS!
By Michael Meuser
This is a well written, well documented and absolutely amazing account of pollution politics in the U.S. From the authors' case studies of lead and PVC we can learn how to interpret the "facts," and what to look for, in similar pollution issues of today. We need more "gutsy" accounts like this from academics and their publishers.

Important book for understanding our toxic world
By A Customer
Two respected historians of environmental health weigh in on two of the twentieth century's biggest sources of industrial pollution--lead and plastics. Equipped with an incredible bounty of inside-the-industry documents gleaned from major toxic tort law suits, the authors uncover more smoking guns than you're likely to find in a Sam Peckinpah film. You'll never look at the Dutch Boy the same way again.

The Hellenistic Settlements in the East from Armenia and Mesopotamia to Bactria and India, by Getzel M. Cohen

This is the third volume of Getzel Cohen’s important work on the Hellenistic settlements in the ancient world. Through the conquests of Alexander the Great, his successors and others, Greek and Macedonian culture spread deep into Asia, with colonists settling as far away as Bactria and India. In this book, Cohen provides historical narratives, detailed references, citations, and commentaries on all the Graeco-Macedonian settlements founded (or refounded) in the East. Organized geographically, Cohen pulls together discoveries and debates from dozens of widely scattered archaeological and epigraphic projects, making a distinct contribution to ongoing questions and opening new avenues of inquiry.

From the Inside Flap
Praise for the author's previous volumes on the Hellenistic settlements:

"A major piece of scholarship. It will be constantly consulted and will take a place among the leading reference works available to the growing number of scholars and students now working on the Hellenistic age."—American Journal of Archaeology

"An important work for professional classicists and historians interested in Hellenistic cities, city founding, and political history. Indeed, [it] will become the standard reference work on Hellenistic city foundations."—History

"A monumental compendium. . . . [It] will become a standard reference work for the next generation of Hellenistic historians; it can also serve as a model for the distillation and presentation of a massive, scattered, and difficult body of evidence and scholarship on one of the most difficult, but surely most important, aspects of Hellenistic civilization."—Bryn Mawr Clasical Review
