Game Changer: Animal Rights and the Fate of Africa's Wildlife, by Glen Martin

Are conservation and protecting animals the same thing? In Game Changer, award-winning environmental reporter Glen Martin takes a fresh look at this question as it applies to Africa’s megafauna. Martin assesses the rising influence of the animal rights movement and finds that the policies championed by animal welfare groups could lead paradoxically to the elimination of the very species—including elephants and lions—that are the most cherished. In his anecdotal and highly engaging style, Martin takes readers to the heart of the conflict. He revisits the debate between conservationists, who believe that people whose lives are directly impacted by the creation of national parks and preserves should be compensated, versus those who believe that restrictive protection that forbids hunting is the most effective way to conserve wildlife and habitats. Focusing on the different approaches taken by Kenya, Tanzania, and Namibia, Martin vividly shows how the world’s last great populations of wildlife have become the hostages in a fight between those who love animals and those who would save them.

"A nuanced investigation."--"Publishers Weekly"

"Africa's wild megafauna are caught in the crossfire between animal-welfare campaigners and conservationists. . . . In this pacy, unsentimental account, Martin . . . points out that measures such as ecotourism and protection for iconic species have backfired dramatically."--"Nature (2)"

"A perceptive if partisan examination of a continent-wide controversy over how best to preserve Africa's amazing wildlife heritage."--"San Francisco Chronicle"

"Martin builds a convincing case. . . . But the real value of Martin's book is in showing how hard it is to find any conservation strategy that works in the complex reality of today's Africa. . . . From the Inside Flap
"How best to preserve biological diversity and protect endangered species drives the conservation impulse on every continent, but none more so than Africa. In Game Changer Glen Martin plunges bravely into the center of a scalding scientific debate and without sentiment or prejudice reveals and lauds what works on the world's most biodiverse continent, while exposing the destructive romanticism, inchoate philosophy, and outright idiocy that is steering so many contemporary wildlife conservation efforts toward failure."—Mark Dowie, author of Conservation Refugees: The Hundred-Year Conflict Between Global Conservation and Native Peoples

"We are well into a massive global environmental crisis, against which the worldviews and tactics of status quo conservation are manifestly inadequate. Game Changer may well be the most explosively controversial look yet at this tragic state of affairs, viewed through the conflicted topics of animal rights, hunting, and African cultural diversity. I couldn’t put this book down and I can scarcely wait for the inevitable critical reactions, in hopes that Glen Martin’s provocative candor will lead to more effective solutions." —Harry Greene, Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University

"A sobering exposé of Africa’s wilderness facade. Martin tours Kenya’s legendary Eden of elephant and lion, wildebeest and rhino, and finds it on the verge of crumbling under the weight of a burgeoning populace and a misguided conservation agenda. Martin's is a gritty tale of bush meat and ivory, poachers and poverty, and a call for a more pragmatic approach toward saving the last great herds of Earth’s quintessential wild kingdom." —Will Stolzenburg, author of Rat Island: Predators in Paradise and the World's Greatest Wildlife Rescue

"The hardest lesson we all must learn about saving Africa’s wildlife: conservation can’t just be about the animals. Game Changer makes this case brilliantly. While the plight of individual animals pulls on our heartstrings, Glen Martin fearlessly show us how conservationists must think about entire landscapes, including people." —Jonathan Adams, author of The Myth of Wild Africa

Necessary and highly readable, a must-have for anyone interested in conservation or Africa
By S. Zakin
Glen Martin, the former science and environment reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, has given us a fair-minded and knowledgeable account of what's gone terribly wrong with conservation in Kenya, the icon for African nature. As a part-time resident of Kenya, I've walked the same ground, and spoken to many of the people Martin has interviewed in this highly readable account. Glen Martin gets it right. While many of us are sympathetic to the animal rights movement's goals, particularly the need to reform factory farming, a 1977 ban on hunting and trading in wildlife products in Kenya promulgated by Western animal rights groups functioned as the worst kind of cultural imperialism, criminalizing the country's hunter-gatherers and traditional subsistence hunters, and closing off the possibility of community-based conservation programs that had been successful elsewhere in Africa. The worst part was that it backfired: Kenya's wildlife has been devastated since 1977. This is a great, readable narrative that offers a portrait of contemporary Kenya while familiarizing readers with global conservation challenges. Martin's book is a must read not only for those interested in Africa, but for anyone interested in conservation.

The end of the game?
By lyndonbrecht
This is a book that deserves wide reading. Martin knows what he is writing about, and makes a strong case for his views. This is a kind of participant journalism, based on a great deal of travel and many interviews, although the book focuses mostly on Kenya and Namibia.

His views are consistent and not easily described, but I'll try here. He argues that the philosophy animal rights is getting in the way of animal conservation, and he critiques the general view of animal rights as well as specific organizations, such as IFAW, as actually being harmful to the cause of conservation of species. He says that animal rights as a concept is not really comprehensible to many Africans, and that international organizations have successfully pressured governments to adopt harmful policies such as Kenya's ban on certain kinds of hunting. Animals' rights to exist just because they exist doesn't cut it in Africa, he says, and that preservation will only work if local people can see benefits. Hunting some species--the selective hunting of some species, such as lions, could generate large income and give locals a vested interest. Without that, the game is up, essentially. Lions kill precious livestock, elephants destroy crops and so on--and iconic species in the USA are dangerous pests other places.

The large and increasing human population pressure on resources is the driver for extinction in the wild, and unless the game--read most large species--offers locals resources that balance their losses to wildlife and the lost possibilities of new farmland, the species are doomed. He contrasts Kenya with Namibia, where hunting has been embraced as a policy, and where wildlife is in better shape than elsewhere in Africa. These are something of two contrasting case studies, and his conviction comes down on the Namibia side.

He also argues that existing groups of animals are quickly eroding their resource base in protected areas, particularly elephants, and if not culled on a regular basis, will destroy what sustains them within what protected areas exist. He offers an interesting critique of media, such as the whole body of film and books about Elsa the lioness and the Born Free films--seeing it as extremely harmful.

I don't find his argument particularly pleasant, but he is quite convincing. There is no question that local people must share benefits of wildlife existence, or will use resources themselves. Environmentalists like me who like the idea of elephants and lions living free and wild in Africa must realize that.

Incredible read for wildlife lovers.
By Albina Hume
Game Changer by Glen Martin is an incredible read for wildlife lovers and those who truly care for conservation. After reading and constantly making notes of new knowledge, which masterfully was collected and presented by the brilliant author, I was reassured hundred times of the undeniable fact that harmony between man and land is essential for successful management to save wildlife for future generations.
I'd give this book 7 stars if I could, because not only I've learned about current African wildlife's fate which is hijacked by international NGO's who ultimately driving the extinction of animal species and human culture, but the possible change of failed policies if more people will realize the devastating reality of how Animal Rights movement threaten wellbeing of African people, which in my opinion is similar to genocide...
