About the Author
Jack O'Dell was Editor of Freedomways, a legendary publication that from 1961-1985 published Paul Robeson, W.E.B. Du Bois, Martin Luther King Jr., Pablo Neruda, and Alice Walker, among many others. Nikhil Pal Singh is Associate Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis and History at New York University. He is the author of Black is a Country: Race and the Unfinished Struggle for Democracy.

Movement without the Prime Mover

Ouch. Perhaps, not intended; but an understanding of the much celebrated but largely failed Civil Rights Movement becomes clear when we comprehend just why J. Edgar Hoover would singularly focus on removing Jack O'Dell from its leadership. Mr. O'Dell who is still alive today is yet not appreciated for the difference between what is here called a Black Freedom Movement and how it and he might have delivered the Civil Rights Movement community to a place we yet strive for. Still today, we have the tendency to celebrate those that speak for us with little to no assessment of who instead thinks for us -- Jack O'Dell's nuanced and insightful thinking was of necessity silenced as a component of the Civil Rights Movement. We should be appreciative for this timely publication as it gives us an understanding of the past and why the present and a yet why not for the future.
